DOF needed at Sheffield Wednesday

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer has criticised Dejphon Chansiri for his decision not to hire a director of football.

The Sheffield Wednesday owner recently reiterated to the fan engagement panel that he has no intention of appointing a director of football, adamant that the manager should have the final say on recruitment.

With the managerial merry-go-round that has taken place at Hillsborough this season, though, some may wonder if there is any point in giving a manager total control over transfers when he could be shown the door the next month.

On the topic, Palmer told FFC:

“He keeps reiterating he doesn’t want to get a director of football. He’s put a shedload of money in the football club and he’s on the brink of being relegated to League One when he should have been in the Premier League. And he’s saying he doesn’t want a director of football at the football club? That says it all.

“As far as I’m concerned, whoever is advising him… I’m not knocking the chairman. I get grief for not supporting the chairman and whatever, but I’m just a realist and call it as it is.

“He has put a lot of money into the football club, that there can be no arguments about. But he’s been badly advised, hence why Sheffield Wednesday are in the position they’re in this season.”

As things stand, Wednesday are set to lose a whole host of players this summer due to expiring contracts.

It means a large rebuilding job may need to be carried out at Hillsborough before the start of next season, so perhaps the arrival of a director of football would be useful.

Desperate times

West Indies cricket teams have been faced with desperate situations inthe past few years and today is no exception

Haydn Gill09-May-2001West Indies cricket teams have been faced with desperate situations inthe past few years and today is no exception.Down 1-3 in the seven-match Cable & Wireless One-Day Internationalseries against South Africa, they go to Kensington Oval this morningin a must-win situation to keep alive their hopes of winning thetrophy. We need to get desperate from this game, but it shouldn’t have come tothis stage, captain Carl Hooper said yesterday after a morningpractice session that attracted a large crowd at Queen’s Park.We should have been desperate a long time ago to pull even with theseguys.Hooper and the West Indies are still upbeat about their chances. But against the background of three successive, comprehensive defeats, there are others who have a dim view.A general worker at Kensington said yesterday it might be easier forLord Nelson or Bussa to wuk-up than for the West Indies to win amatch. He might be among a small group, but the truth is that in the lastthree encounters, the West Indies were hardly competitive. And Hooper knows it too.A couple of games ago I was trying to emphasise that I was a bitconcerned about the bowling, he said. The batting is now a problem as well. We’ve played four One-Day games so far and our highest score is 220.That is a bit worrying given the fact that sometimes we have played asmany as eight batters. We must bat and bat properly. Regardless of if we bat first or last,we must be able to give the bowlers a score that they can work with.Hooper himself is peeved he has not been able to convert his promisingstarts into significant contributions. In every match, he looked theclass batsman we know he is, but returns of 43, 48, 29 and 46 haveunderstandably frustrated his followers.Obviously I am disappointed with the 40s. I’m not making any excuses,he said. The times when I have got out, they have been 10, 12, 15 overs left. Icould have gone on to get, if not a hundred, 70s, 80s, 90s.After two defeats by eight wickets and another by 132 runs, thebiggest margin of victory for the South Africans in 22 One-DayInternationals against the West Indies, Mike Findlay and fellowselectors have made adjustments to the 14-man squad that was utilisedfor the first four matches. There is a recall for opening batsman Daren Ganga, whose record in theshorter form of the game hardly suggests encouragement. The 21-year-old Trinidadian, who takes Ricardo Powell’s place at thetop of the innings, averages seven in as many matches. His techniqueand temperament, however, are as good as anyone else’s in theCaribbean.Ganga had two difficult tours South Africa and Australia and he hasbeen given the opportunity here in the Caribbean in conditions that heis familiar with, Hooper said. The second and final change in the squad is perhaps the mostinteresting. The inclusion of leg-spinner Dinanath Ramnarine ahead of left-armerNeil McGarrell, could prove decisive in the middle of the innings. There is a possibility that Ramnarine may try to bowl outside the legstump as he did so effectively in the Antigua Test, but it could be abit of a risk in the One-Day game.Ramnarine has got a part to play. We’ve been struggling to takewickets in the middle overs, Hooper said. He’s been brought into thesquad so he can play that role and pose a bit more variation and punchto the attack. In the first four matches, South Africa were able to launch theirinnings with calculated aggression which has caused the West Indiesmajor problems in containing them in the first 15 overs. In successive matches, by the time the field restrictions were eased,South Africa had raced to 67, 70, 88 and 74, and in each match theWest Indies took just one wicket in that period.Herschelle Gibbs, in particular, was very successful in charging thefast bowlers, but Hooper said there wasn’t a likelihood a spinnerwould be given the new ball to counter the problem.A spinner has been introduced before the 15 overs and hasn’t provedthat effective, the West Indies captain said.Opening with a spinner with the new ball is a big ask. Even though Ihave been successful in bowling in the middle stages of the game, Idon’t think it is something that we want to do.

Liverpool fans react to Man United rumour

A number of Liverpool supporters have been reacting positively to news that Manchester United fans could stage another protest before their clash.

The Reds are back in Premier League action on Thursday evening, as the latest chapter in English football’s biggest fixture is written.

It is a huge game for Liverpool, with Arsenal’s 1-0 win away to Chelsea on Wednesday giving them fresh hope that a top-four finish is possible.

That being said, Jurgen Klopp’s side will be coming up against a team in good form and who will be hoping to damage their Champions League hopes.

The match has been rearranged because of the protests that took place at Old Trafford earlier this month, but according to the Telegraph [via Anfield Watch], there are fears from United that similar protests could happen again, potentially throwing the game into doubt.

Howey claims NUFC fans wouldn’t like Lemina

In an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern, former Newcastle United centre-back Steve Howey has claimed that Mario Lemina would not be liked by the fans if he cared more about his social media than the club.

Lemina, who posted a bizarre video on social media back in 2019 when seemingly trying to engineer a big move away from Southampton, has been linked with a move to Newcastle this summer despite failing to keep Fulham in the Premier League this season during his loan spell away from St Mary’s.

The £40,000 per week midfielder, who regularly uses the hashtag #TonicLikeLeminade on his Instagram account, had been linked with a move to Manchester United back in 2019 but since then he has lost his place in the Southampton side and failed to impress at Fulham, with a 6.58 WhoScored rating.

Speaking on why Newcastle fans wouldn’t like their club to sign Lemina and why the midfielder must be careful what he is like off the pitch, Howey exclusively told The Transfer Tavern:

“Even if he performs on the pitch then I still wouldn’t want to see him doing a lot on social media because there are an awful lot of people that don’t have a lot of money, and they won’t want to see somebody on social media flashing their new house or car.

“I mean, obviously with Lemina, if he is like that and the Southampton fans are not happy with him then can you imagine what Newcastle fans would think of him?”

Steve Bruce has confirmed that he would love to bring Joe Willock back to the club this summer either permanently or on another loan deal after the 21-year old’s impressive performances since January.

Newcastle are well stocked in Lemina’s position as they have Jonjo Shelvey, Sean and Matty Longstaff, Isaac Hayden and Jeff Hendrick all on long term deals.

Middlesex struggle in pursuit of Hants total

With a fighting innings of 51 not out, which has lasted nearly two and a half hours, Robin Weston was attempting to bring stability to the Middlesex innings after five wickets had gone down for 124

Andy Jalil14-Jun-2001With a fighting innings of 51 not out, which has lasted nearly two and a half hours, Robin Weston was attempting to bring stability to the Middlesex innings after five wickets had gone down for 124.The last to fall was Paul Weekes’ wicket, caught at cover for 13 from a lofted shot, an hour before bad light and rain brought an end to proceedings at 5.44pm with seven overs remaining of the second day’s play. Middlesex had reached 169 for five.Having made a slow but solid start to their first innings, the home side had struggled to consolidate during the last two sessions of play.Their opening stand put 74 on the board when two wickets went in successive overs. Michael Roseberry, who was dropped at slip before he had scored, was caught on 30 off the outside edge as he pushed forward to off spinner Suaun Udal in the 34th over.In the next over, Dimitri Mascarenhas bowled Andy Strauss for 33 and then struck again three overs later, having Stephen Fleming caught at slip for five. That gave him two wickets for seven in six overs of accurate pace bowling.Shortly before tea, which was taken on 119 for four, Middlesex lost Ben Hutton for six when Neil Johnson took his second catch, at slip. It was off Udal who claimed his second wicket for 41 in twenty overs.Earlier this morning, a big-hitting spree by Hampshire’s tail-enders added 94 runs in only 74 minutes before they were dismissed for 404 an hour before lunch. After losing his partner Adrian Aymes, who managed to add only six to his overnight score of 63 before falling leg before wicket to Phil Tufnell, Udal went on to become the fifth Hampshire batsman to score a half-century in the innings. Remarkably, this is the second time this season that five Hampshire batsmen have hit half-centuries in a single innings.Hampshire’s eighth-wicket stand of 114 fell just five short of their record against Middlesex.Udal’s fifty was the quickest of the five, coming from 81 balls and included six boundaries. He hit two of those off Angus Fraser in the second over of the morning, one to square leg and the other between long leg and square.Alex Morris kept up the scoring rate after Udal had skied to be caught at mid-wicket off Paul Weekes. He had been dropped earlier at short mid-wicket off Tufnell, but continued with his hard hitting which brought him six boundaries and a six over the sight screen off Weekes who eventually bowled him when he was only seven short of yet another fifty by a Hampshire batsman. With his dismissal, Weekes completed his first five-wicket haul in five years. The last occasion was against Glamorgan when he had eight for 39, his best first-class figures.

Celtic: Hutton offers verdict on Dembele

Siriki Dembele would be an ‘unbelievable’ addition to Celtic but the move will come down how much the Hoops have to spend this summer.

That’s according to former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton, who was speaking to Football Insider.

The lowdown

Celtic are said to be among the clubs chasing the Peterborough attacker in this summer’s window – his younger brother Karamoko is already on the club’s books. The Hoops face competition from Rangers as well as London duo Crystal Palace and relegated Fulham.

Dembele scored 11 goals and provided 12 assists for the Posh in 42 League One appearances this season (via Transfermarkt), proving instrumental in their promotion to the Championship.

However, the 24-year-old is about to enter the final year of his contract and the club’s Director of Football Barry Fry has admitted that the forward is unlikely to agree a new deal at London Road (via This is Futbol).

The latest

Although Dembele’s contract situation means that Peterborough aren’t in a particularly strong position, Hutton believes they will still demand ‘decent money’ for him. Without a manager installed, the former Scotland defender wonders if Celtic’s hands will be tied, telling Football Insider:

“It would be a good addition. You just wonder about the fee. I understand he’s in the last 12 months of his contract.

“But if Peterborough are going to cash in, they will want decent money. It’s going to come down to how much they will have to spend.

“Again, Celtic don’t have a manager. Who’s making the decisions about the budget? It’s such a difficult situation.

“He would be an unbelievable signing. He’s scored goals at a high level so he could come up and do it in the Premiership.”

The verdict

According to the Daily Record, Eddie Howe is set to be announced as Celtic’s new manager this week. If the Hoops had any transfers on hold, they could be given the green light to go through with them once the 43-year-old is in place at Parkhead.

You would think that the opportunity to link up with his brother will be a key draw for Dembele, who would indeed seem an exciting acquisition for what should be a relatively low fee, considering the market values of Peterborough’s current squad.

Newcastle must land Palace’s Wilfried Zaha

Newcastle must look to land Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha this summer amid Marcus Bent’s transfer claim.

What’s the story?

The Ivory Coast international has long been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park, with reports last summer suggesting that Steve Bruce’s side were very much one of the clubs interested in signing him.

Now, speaking to FFC’s sister site, This is Futbol, Bent has touted the Magpies as a potential destination for Zaha were he to finally leave the Eagles this summer.

He said: “Zaha has not been that consistent this year, but we know he’s a talent. We spoke about him going to Everton, two years ago Everton would have snapped at the chance, but I don’t think he’s a player they want.

“Newcastle would be a great team to go to. He needs a bigger pedestal to play on and better players around him.”

Imagine him and Saint-Maximin

Already boasting one of the Premier League’s elite dribblers in Allan Saint-Maximin, Bruce could help form a terrifying Newcastle duo by landing Zaha this summer and unleashing him with the Frenchman as a wing duo.

Zaha’s average of 4.5 dribbles per game in the Premier League last season was only bettered by two players: Wolves’ Adama Traore, and Saint-Maximin himself. Their abilities to play across the front-line could see them interchange positions, and make for the kind of modern forward-line used by the likes of Liverpool and Barcelona of yesteryear.

In fact, Zaha’s Palace teammate James McArthur waxed lyrical about his abilities back in 2018, saying: “He is just unplayable at times and I wouldn’t like to be a defender playing against him. For us, he is a great asset when you can give someone the ball and he can run 40 yards with it.”

Essentially, Zaha would bring a lot of the same characteristics that Saint-Maximin has in his locker.

The £40.5m-rated star would ensure that Newcastle had an added threat to go along with Saint-Maximin, and that if teams do try and double up on the Frenchman, then Zaha would have more space himself to wreak havoc.

It would cause opposition defences all sorts of dilemmas about how best to deal with the two of them on song together, and why it could be a scary prospect for the Premier League.

East Zone batsmen fight valiantly against North at Delhi

East Zone’s primary objective in their Duleep Trophy match against North Zone at the Feroze Shah Kotla, Delhi, is, at the end of the third day, abundantly clear

Staff Reporter28-Mar-2002East Zone’s primary objective in their Duleep Trophy match against North Zone at the Feroze Shah Kotla, Delhi, is, at the end of the third day, abundantly clear. With the prospects of a win annihilated by a featherbed batting track, East will be looking to just surpass North’s first-innings total and pick up five points instead of three from the drawn match. It was, on the whole, a gritty batting display from East Zone on the third day. The openers, Parag Das and Debang Gandhi, added another 54 runs for the first wicket before Das fell to Sarandeep Singh for 63 off 74 balls, with 11 fours.Gandhi fell to the same bowler eight runs later for 44, and a collapse looked imminent. But 90 runs were then added for the third wicket by Sanjay Raul and Rashmi Ranjan Parida before Rahul Sanghvi picked up a wicket, dismissing Raul for 32 off 104 balls.Twenty runs later, Sanghvi took out Pravanjan Mullick for 11. Sarandeep then got back into the act by dismissing Parida for 62 (145 balls, six fours, one six) and, at 236 for five, East Zone were again teetering. But Subhomoy Das and wicket-keeper Zakaria Zuffri then posted a 40-run stand for the sixth wicket that stabilised the situation in part. Zuffri made only 11, but he was at the crease for 53 balls, proving valuable support for Das.At the close of play on Thursday, Das was unbeaten on 56 off 117 balls, with eight fours in his innings. He was accompanied by Laxmi Rattan Shukla, who had cracked a whirlwind 43 off 36 balls with three fours and three sixes.East Zone ended the day on 354 for six, just over 200 runs behind North Zone’s first-innings total. If Das and Shukla can bat calmly on the last day to compile centuries, East Zone may yet see a result that, when Vikram Rathour was going strong on the first two days, seemed completely out of reach.
