McFadyen takes over as Tasmanian coach

Victorian elite coaching co-ordinator Brian McFadyen will be switching to a new home within a month after winning appointment today as Tasmania’s new cricket coach.

John Polack16-Apr-2002Victorian elite coaching co-ordinator Brian McFadyen will be switching to a new home within a month after winning appointment today as Tasmania’s new cricket coach. In a move that formally marks the end of Greg Shipperd’s 11-year reign at the helm of the Tasmanian team, McFadyen has been tied to a deal that will see him take over the post until at least the end of the 2004-05 season.”We are confident that, in Brian McFadyen, we have secured a coach who will take Tasmanian cricket forward and play a leadership role in developing the blueprint for the development of sport in the state,” said Tasmanian Cricket Association (TCA) Chairman, Denis Rogers, in announcing the decision at a press conference in Hobart this afternoon.”We believe Brian has the vision, coaching skills and leadership attributes to take the team and Tasmanian cricket to the next level,” he added.Shipperd had been considered an early favourite to retain the position on the back of a spectacular late season rally that saw the Tasmanians qualify for a berth in the 2001-02 Pura Cup Final.Added to his claims was the distinction of having guided the Tigers into three Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup finals matches in all; renowned skills as one of the most meticulously prepared coaches in Australia; and strong support from the state’s players which peaked at the Tigers’ end-of-season awards ceremony a fortnight ago when several key members of the squad spoke passionately in his defence. But McFadyen’s growing reputation as one of Australian cricket’s finest strategists; his tactical acumen; and his involvement in helping Victoria to reach two successive Pura Cup finals in 1999-2000 and 2000-01 ultimately swayed the decision in his favour.”I’m very excited about this opportunity,” said McFadyen this afternoon.”I’d like to help stimulate the playing group and like to see everybody really enjoying their cricket and maximising their own potential. If they can do that individually, and if we can do that collectively, we’ll have a lot of success.”It’s a very good group,” he added of the playing list that has made Tasmania one of the best-performed states in first-class competition over recent years.”It (contains) exciting talent with some younger guys coming through who have been most impressive.”There’s also certainly a foundation that’s already been laid by the second half of last season. I think the players will already all be very excited about what potentially lies ahead next year.”McFadyen’s coaching background most recently includes four years as an assistant with the Victorian state team but has extended to take in stewardship of the Victorian ACB Cup team, and a number of Victorian underage sides. He also operated as Australia’s assistant coach during the recently-completed VB Series of one-day international matches against New Zealand and South Africa. As a player, he was a member of the South Australian and Victorian state squads and won the Bradman Medal as Adelaide’s best first grade cricketer in his role as a right arm paceman for Port Adelaide in 1990-91.Before injuries forced an early end to his career, he was additionally a member of Australia’s team at the Youth World Cup of 1988 and toured New Zealand with an Academy side two years later. The 33-year-old already shares connections with two of Tasmania’s most experienced players in Jamie Cox and David Saker.Along with Cox, he was included in the elite group of 16 cricketers handpicked as the first-ever inductees of the Academy back in 1988. His close bond with Saker meanwhile stems back to his intensive work with Victoria’s core group of fast bowlers early in his association with the Bushrangers.Shipperd, who is still in contention to complete an interchange with McFadyen by taking over as Victoria’s new coach, expressed disappointment at the outcome but wished his successor good fortune.”It has been a wonderful journey and honour to have played for, coached and (helped) administer Tasmanian (teams) for 14 seasons. I am satisfied that I have given my all to the challenges that were presented,” he said in a short statement released late this afternoon.”I am naturally disappointed at not retaining my post; however, I wish the new coach and especially the players great success in the future.”Over 30 applications in total were received for the position after the TCA acted more than three months ago to appoint a selection committee to review the Tigers’ coaching set-up.Aside from the claims of McFadyen and Shipperd, the committee also closely scrutinised the potential suitability of current Australian Cricket Academy mentor Wayne Phillips when the field narrowed to eight for the final round of interviews earlier this month. The five-man selection panel (consisting of TCA chief executive David Johnston, Australian Cricketers’ Association chief Tim May, legendary former Tasmanian and Australian player David Boon, and TCA Board members Geoff Rowlands and Tony Harrison) is also believed to have included former state captains Brian Davison and Roger Woolley among the group invited to the closing stages of the interview process.McFadyen, who had also been a frontrunner for head coaching positions in both Queensland and Victoria, was ultimately offered the position in the middle of last week.He will be formally relocating to Tasmania before the end of May.

Siriki Dembele to be put up for sale

Reported Celtic target Siriki Dembele is set to be transfer listed by Peterborough United, according to the Daily Record.

The lowdown

Dembele, the older brother of Celtic player Karamoko, was instrumental in Peterborough’s promotion from League One to the Championship.

He was the Posh’s third top-scorer with 12 goals and ranked second for assists with 10.

Dembele was hailed as a ‘destructive’ frontman by manager Darren Ferguson, and former Scottish international Alan Hutton says he would be ‘an unbelievable signing’ for Celtic.

According to Football Insider, the Hoops are battling with sides like Rangers, Fulham and Crystal Palace for his signature.

Crucially, Dembele only has one year left on his contract, and Director of Football Barry Fry admits there’s little prospect of renewal (via This is Futbol).

The latest

Peterborough will apparently look to sell Dembele after he turned down a new deal, the Daily Record reported on Monday (14:06).

It’s Fry’s policy that any player in the last 12 months of their deal will be placed on the transfer list to ensure they don’t walk away on a free transfer.

As a result, Dembele ‘looks set for a move away in the coming weeks’.

The verdict

According to The Scotsman, Eddie Howe will look to green-light three transfer deals almost immediately after taking over at Parkhead – one has to wonder if Dembele could be one of them given these favourable circumstances.

What is clear, though, is that they must move fairly quickly, because another suitor will surely pounce on a cut-price talent who has performed so well this season, is still young, and can player in a variety of positions across the attack.

Surrey edge home in top championship clash

It was tense right to the end, but Surrey emerged as winners at The Oval to preserve their one hundred per cent record for the championship season and, as a result, ended Lancashire’s winning run. Mark Ramprakash might have been discarded by England, but he joined forces with recalled Alec Stewart in what proved to be the decisive partnership.Surrey began the day requiring another 105 to win with six wickets in hand. All the time Ramprakash and Stewart were together, it appeared to be a formality. However, when Stewart was out for 46 and it was 248 for 5, there was still time for some drama to unfold.Azhar Mahmood kept Ramprakash company until the total reached 281 when he was out. Alex Tudor celebrated his recall to the Test team by hitting a brace of fours from the first two balls he faced, but was then out to the third with fifteen still required. Martin Bicknell has been around for a while and he used his experience to end Lancashire’s hopes, with Ramprakash still there at the end, 119 not out, as Surrey won by 3 wickets.Warwickshire’s batsmen made life difficult for Leicestershire at Grace Road by taking their second innings on to 439, setting a target of 94 to win. Nick Knight and Jim Troughton extended their third wicket partnership to 139 before Troughton fell for 66. Knight was fifth out for 130, and Shaun Pollock also contributed 66.While the target was not vast, Leicestershire had only 16 overs in which to force the win, and they set off at a rare pace. Iain Sutcliffe was run out in the eighth over, by which time he and Michael Bevan had taken 47 off the target, but Darren Stevens took up the challenge with Bevan before he too was run out. Neil Burns was bowled, but Bevan remained to guide Leicestershire home with seven wickets and nine balls in hand.In the one remaining Division Two match left unfinished, Worcestershire began the day on 25 without loss requiring 337 to beat Glamorgan. Australian Mike Kasprowicz has been finding wickets hard to come by since joining the Welsh county, but he came good when it mattered by taking five for 77 as Worcestershire were bowled out for 226 to give Glamorgan victory by 110 runs. Ben Smith was top scorer for Worcestershire with 61.

Newcastle transfer claim on Rose

Kevin Phillips has dropped a fresh Newcastle United transfer claim involving Danny Rose.

The Lowdown: Tottenham release Rose

Spurs have confirmed that Rose has been released following the expiration of his deal in North London, along with his teammate Paul Gazzaniga.

Given that the left-back played 13 games in total at St. James’ Park while on loan from the Lilywhites in the 2019/20 term (Transfermarkt), Phillips has speculated that Rose could well make a return to the North East.

The Latest: Phillips backs Rose to Newcastle

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Sunderland striker now pundit has claimed that he could see Rose going back to the Tyneside club in the summer transfer window:

“It wouldn’t surprise me if somebody like Newcastle offered him a year.

“I am sure he could still do a job and he will be fit enough I imagine. I think you could get a good couple of seasons out of him because he is not really that old.

“The only question is whether he still has that hunger and desire to play week in, week out in the Premier League. He needs to want to challenge himself again.

“I could see him going to a Newcastle or one of the clubs coming up from the Championship.

“He is still capable of playing in the Premier League though, 100 per cent.”

The Verdict: Newcastle must stay clear

Given that Steve Bruce’s team already have Jamal Lewis and Paul Dummett already on their books, they must stay well clear of signing a left-back coming towards the end of his career and focus their summer spending elsewhere.

Given that he has come from a ‘big six’ club, he is also likely to demand a big wage, as he was earning £62,000-per-week.

This is a lot of money to spend on a player for the Magpies even without an initial transfer fee, especially given that he may not be guaranteed to start given that they already have both Lewis and Dummett.

At 30 years of age, 31 next month, Rose’s best years are behind him, and he is only going to decline from here, meaning that the Toon should stay clear of any attempt to try and sign the Englishman.

SPCL 2/3 – Laney envisages tough exam from county team-mates

Hampshire’s Jason Laney is preparing himself for a testing afternoon at the crease when he opens the batting for Hungerford against the county’s Academy bowlers at the War Memorial Ground – weather and ground conditions permitting

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)06-Jun-2002Hampshire’s Jason Laney is preparing himself for a testing afternoon at the crease when he opens the batting for Hungerford against the county’s Academy bowlers at the War Memorial Ground – weather and ground conditions permitting!Laney is averaging over 50 for his home town Berkshire club so far this season, but knows there are a host of his county 2nd XI team-mates eager to claim his scalp in the intriguing 50-over Southern Electric Premier League, Division 2 fixture."Lawrie Prittipaul and James Schofield, in particular, are showing great interest in bowling at me, so you can anticipate how high my level of concentration will be if we play" he said. "If either of them gets me out, I’ve got the rest of the season to hear about it !"It’s a critical match for Hungerford, who are lagging behind top dogs United Services and Easton & Martyr Worthy."This league will go to the wire, with any of four of five sides capable of winning it, so beating the Academy is very important," added Laney who, like the rest of his Hungerford team-mates, is worried that heavy midweek rain could scupper the game altogether.Luke Merry is set to return to an otherwise unchanged Academy team, which got back to winning ways against Easton & Martyr Worthy last weekend.Leaders United Services go to Old Tauntonians & Romsey, with Easton back on familiar home soil for the visit of Winchester neighbours Sparsholt, who are minus USA-bound skipper Rob Savage.Winchester KS themselves travel to Lymington, eager to build on consecutive victories over Trojans and Rowledge. It’s touch and go whether Sussex pace bowler Billy Taylor will play a third successive game – he has a Norwich Union League game at Lord’s on Sunday.Inconsistent Lymington badly need some big scores from their power-packed top order.Trojans entertain bottom club Rowledge minus Jamie Donaldson and Jon Gillespie, but Paul Durand is fit to resume his middle-order batting role.Premier 3 pace-setters Purbrook visit Redlynch & Hale, whose opening bowler Steve Moody is following the World Cup in Japan.Second-placed Alton, two points behind, visit fourth-placed Hambledon, with St Cross Symondians anticipating the return of top run getter Mark Parker against out-of-sorts Paultons at the Royal Green Jackets Ground.Saints football skipper Jason Dodd returns for much changed Flamingo against Hartley Wintney, who have to contend with ten-wicket all-rounder Adie Heath, who is currently in the form of his life.Steve Taylor (broken hand) may return for New Milton at Portsmouth II, while lowly Gosport Borough, having sunk to second-from-bottom place, are in desperate need of a positive result against Hursley Park. It’s a vital day too for Waterlooville, who need to arrest a two-match losing sequence against Hook & Newnham Basics who broke their duck at Ventnor last week. The Islanders expect to be boosted by the return of Alex Baker at Havant II, while Leckford may have Australian Glen Richmond on duty against struggling Bashley (Rydal) II at Bakers Farm.

Liverpool fans pleased Adrian could leave

A number of Liverpool supporters have been showing their delight at the news that Adrian’s time at Anfield could come to an end this summer.

Things have gone relatively quiet on the Reds front for the time being, with some players on Euro 2020 duty and others enjoying some downtime after a long season. Jurgen Klopp will be working hard on perfecting his summer transfer business, though, with incomings and outgoings expected at Anfield.

One player whose future appears to be up in the air is Adrian, with the Spaniard proving to be an unconvincing understudy to Alisson.

Having made an impressive start to life on Merseyside, the 34-year-old’s form then began to dip, culminating in a terrible performance which all but single-handedly got Liverpool knocked out of the 2019/20 Champions League by Atletico Madrid. He was also culpable for some errors in the 7-2 drubbing at Villa Park last October.

According to ESPN, Adrian is ‘likely’ to leave the Reds for free this summer, with his contract at the club expiring.

Kensington Oval, for so long the trusty bastion of West Indies cricket, yesterday experienced at first hand the harm and humiliation repeatedlyinflicted on West Indies cricket at other venues across the globe inrecent times

Tony Cozier23-Jun-2002Kensington Oval, for so long the trusty bastion of West Indies cricket, yesterday experienced at first hand the harm and humiliation repeatedlyinflicted on West Indies cricket at other venues across the globe inrecent times. This is the ground where they have been beaten in only three of the 38Tests since 1930 and where they trounced India by ten wickets just sixweeks ago.Yet the West Indies were as abysmal on the second day of the Cable &Wireless Tests against New Zealand as they have been in any of the 24defeats they have suffered in their last 27 Tests outside the Caribbean.Lacking the will, as much as the resources, to maintain the tight holdthey gained midway through Friday’s opening day, they allowed theirresilient opponents to transform 117 for five into 337 before they couldcomplete the job 20 minutes after lunch yesterday. They then collapsed through a succession of reckless, unpardonablestrokes to 107 all out, their lowest total at Kensington since Englandbowled them out for 102 on an uncovered, rain-affected pitch in 1935.Pedro Collins removed opener Mark Richardson to a first slip catch withthe last ball of the first of seven overs at the end of the day when NewZealand predictably chose to spurn the follow-on, in spite of a lead of230. But it was scant consolation.Three days remain and there has been nothing, in either a slow pitch ofvariable but not unmanageable bounce or the divergent approaches of theteams, to remotely suggest New Zealand can be prevented from recordingthe victory in the Caribbean that eluded them for 11 Tests and threeprevious tours.Their position was established by the common sense, team work andpurpose that explain their No.3 rating in the current ICC Testchampionship standings. They are attributes the West Indies appeared to have finally acquiredduring their 2-1 series triumph over India earlier in the season butthey have vanished into thin air in the space of a day and a half.Thin air was where most of their unthinking batsmen chose to hit theball, seemingly for the New Zealanders to confirm their status as one ofthe game’s finest fielding teams. They paid no heed to how their opponents had diligently rebuilt theirinnings by grafting for runs on a pitch of sluggish pace and variablebounce. It was a recovery built around captain Stephen Fleming’s quality 130 onFriday but would not have been possible without wicket-keeper RobbieHart’s unwavering adherence to the basics that occupied five hours, 20minutes and 220 balls for his unbeaten 57.Even No.8 Daryl Tuffey’s defiance for an hour-and-a-half for 28 whileadding 53 with Hart should have been a clue to even a schoolboycricketer as to what was required.Yet those for whom the game is a richly rewarded profession once morefailed to appreciate their responsibility to their team and theirpublic.Eight batsmen were out to catches in the field four in the deep, fourcloser to the bat. All were attempting big shots. It was out and outfolly. The West Indies were instantly and initially unsettled by the raw paceof the 27-year-old Bond Shane Bond. After impressing Australians, who are grudging in their praise, notleast for their neighbours across the Tasman Sea, on his first tour latelast year, Bond’s reputation preceded him to the Caribbean. His first ball proved it was not misplaced. It passed Chris Gayleoutside off-stump before he could raise his bat and immediately shook apreviously somnolent crowd of around 5 000 into the animated buzz thatall genuine fast bowlers generate.Bond was consistently clocked at over 90 miles an hour on TWITelevision’s speedgun and once touched 93.1. It was the kind of pacethat was once the West Indies’ preserve, several times over.Unlike the slower modern West Indian, Bond backed it up with control andwas soon on a hat-trick.Gayle’s feet were as heavy as a Mafia victim’s as he tamely drove thefirst ball of Bond’s third over into wide cover’s lap.Ramnaresh Sarwan, who filled the breach, apparently learnt nothing fromthe day-and-a-half he spent in the field observing the New Zealanders’batting. If he had he couldn’t have attempted an expansive pull off hisfirst ball.It was fractionally short and faster than any Sarwan has encounteredsince Brett Lee in Australia a year-and-a-half ago. It predictably foundhigh on the bat and travelled limply to mid-on where Ian Butler dived tohis right to catch it.So Brian Lara had to enter at six for two, a situation to take his mindback to his prolific series in Sri Lanka late last year. From the start,he shaped better than he has done at any time since then. What he made of what he saw from his colleagues at the opposite end canonly be guessed at.Wavell Hinds swatted at a bouncer from the towering Tuffey and shook hishead in wonder at his folly as it skewed from the splice and skied nomore than ten yards away into the waiting hands of gully. But the sequence of suicide strokemakers was not at an end.As soon as Butler, sharp if not as rapid, took over from Bond, captainCarl Hooper chose the hook as his best option for the first bouncer thatcame along. Tuffey, situated at long-leg between the Inniss and HewittStands, safely gathered the resulting catch.Hopes of a recovery from 47 for four rested fairly and squarely on theleft-handed batting of Lara, by now into his stride, and ShivnarineChanderpaul, the form batsmen of the season. They went into tea unbeaten but a long scoreless period, against Butlerand the tall left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori, in which he was kept on 28for 25 balls, built the pressure on Lara. When captain Fleming brought cover into silly point and Vettori droppedthe next ball short, Lara saw his chance to go through the consequentopening. He cut hard against the turn, out of the bowler’s footmarks, but justdragged the ball back into his leg-stump from the inside-edge.He had played without problem for nearly an hour-and-a-half and the NewZealanders knew they had removed their main stumbling block.Chanderpaul was the other but, by then, the epidemic had spread throughthe dressing room and he could find no one to stay with him.Ridley Jacobs swung a high catch to mid-wicket off the top edge, Collinsturned Butler round the corner where Vincent lept to claim the catch andAdam Sanford touched Butler to the keeper. It was all over when Powell and Merv Dillon, in at No.11 where he beganhis career, were out to top-edged sweeps from Vettori. The swift demise was in stark contrast to the purposeful progress of theNew Zealand innings from its overnight 257 for six.The West Indies could only find one wicket in the first session as Hartand Tuffey did the simple things simply. The only success was the left-handed Vettori for 39. He cut four moreboundaries to add to the four he had at the start but then clippedCollins off the legs to square-leg.They had to wait another hour-and-a-half before they dislodged Tuffey, lbw for Powell’s first Test wicket.Bond followed right away, bowled middle stump off the inside edge, andButler was last man out, stranded in mid-pitch in confused calling withHart. But, by then, their main task was bowling, not batting, and theyreturned to do it well.

Leeds United: Whites interested in swoop for Harrison Reed

Leeds United are reportedly lining up a move for Fulham midfielder Harrison Reed, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The Lowdown: Leeds United eye new summer recruits

As Marcelo Bielsa’s men gear up for a second season back in the top-flight, they have seemingly turned their attentions towards the 26-year-old.

Despite not yet venturing into the summer transfer window, the Whites have been heavily linked with plenty of players, mainly left-backs like Nicolas Tagliafico.

Midfield strengthening will also be a priority for Bielsa ahead of pre-season it seems, following previous injury scares in the closing stages of the 2020/21 for star anchor man Kalvin Phillips [The Athletic].

The Latest: Reed has reportedly attracted attention from Elland Road

Leeds are now interested in Reed as they build towards next campaign thanks to his eye-catching performances for relegated Fulham last year [Daily Mail].

Looking to build squad depth, there could be a chance that the Yorkshiremen could acquire the former Southampton man for a favourable price, due to the inevitable valuation drop-off set off by Fulham’s relegation to the Sky Bet Championship.

The report does add however that the Whites are not the only ones tracking the midfielder.

The Verdict: Consistent performer

Undoubtedly, Reed would represent an intelligent signing for Leeds United as they build towards 2021/22.

Making 31 Premier League appearances across 2020/21 [Transfermarkt], he recorded an impressive 86.2% passing accuracy for his current employers, demonstrating his propensity to recycle possession effectively[WhoScored].

He also showed his defensive qualities with nearly two tackles on average per 90 minutes [WhoScored], and was labelled as ‘tremendous’ by manager Scott Parker in January due to his consistent level of performance for the Cottagers [West London Sport].

An adaptable footballer, Leeds United should look to make Reed one of their first recruits of the new season. Possessing a diverse range of capabilities, the midfielder could slot in well to an already talented group of players.

In other news, Leeds United are reportedly interested in a flying winger.

ECB name National Academy provisional shortlist

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) today named a provisional list of 20 players who will be considered for the National Academy in Adelaide this winter.

Media Release10-Jul-2002The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) today named a provisional list of 20 players who will be considered for the National Academy in Adelaide this winter.Hugh Morris, ECB Performance Director, said, “At this stage of the season wewanted to concentrate our minds on the kind of players who might be invited to the National Academy this winter. West Ham insider drops Lingard claim

Speaking to the Sun, one club insider has made a Jesse Lingard claim amid the enticing development that West Ham United are ready to step up their bid.

The Lowdown: West Ham and Lingard…

West Ham have been heavily linked with a permanent deal for Lingard since his blistering spell on loan at the London Stadium over the second half of 2020/2021.

The Englishman racked up a brilliant nine goals and four assists in 16 Premier League outings last season for West Ham and left his mark as the Hammers clinched Europa League qualification.

As such, the club want to sign him this summer, with the Sun sharing an enticing development.

The Latest: West Ham insider drops claim

Now, speaking to the outlet, a club insider has explained: “Jesse knows we want him, so hopefully the club will pursue him in the next month or so.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This comes as the Irons are now ready to step up their bid to sign Lingard following his omission from England’s 26-man Euros squad.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was withdrawn through injury but manager Gareth Southgate opted to call upon Ben White instead.

This may be a boost for West Ham fans, though, with the club set to step up their pursuit of the 28-year-old as a result.

Indeed, manager David Moyes is apparently now hopeful a move ‘can soon be concluded’.

The Verdict: Good news…

The Hammers have other priorities this window alongside a move for Lingard, with the striking position and a fresh centre-back among the top issues which need addressing (Claret & Hugh).

West Ham fans will be hoping that the club can seal a move as quickly as possible for Lingard though, especially given his exceptional form over 2020/2021.

Adrian Durham was one of his many admirers, with the talkSPORT pundit calling him ‘phenomenal’ – the type of praise which highlights why the club are so eager to get him over the line.
