Manchester United fans react as Joel Pereira completes loan move to Hearts

[ad_pod ]

Having signed for Manchester United back in 2012, Joel Pereira was part of the team that won the 2014/2015 U21 Development League title and subsequently extended his contract at Old Trafford.

However, since his time at academy level with United, the goalkeeper has spent the majority of his career out on loan at various sides.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed spells with Rochdale, Belenenses, Vitoria Setubal and Kortrijk, and it has now been confirmed that he will once again spend the season away from Manchester.

As revealed on the club’s official website, Pereira has joined Scottish side Hearts on a season-long loan in order to “obtain regular first-team football and continue his development between the posts”.

After hearing the update on Pereira’s future, United fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the matter.

Many supporters of the Manchester side felt he should have been sold this summer instead, and insisted he has no chance of breaking past the likes of David de Gea and Dean Henderson to claim the number one jersey at United.

Indeed, some fans suggested the club should simply “put him out of his misery” and just release him.

Birmingham City’s predicted starting XI against Barnsley

[ad_pod ]

Birmingham City have experienced every single result possible so far this season.

A win on the opening day against Brentford was followed up by a draw to Bristol City but at the weekend they suffered a 3-0 thrashing at the hands of Midlands rivals Nottingham Forest.

The three results see Pep Clotet’s men sit almost slap-bang in the middle of the Championship table in 15th and considering they lost vital players such as Che Adams to Southampton for £15m and Jota to arch-rivals Aston Villa over the summer, that isn’t the worst place they could be.

In Adams they have lost 22 goals whilst Jota laid on 11 assists for the side last season.

However, they are currently the league’s joint-lowest goal scorers having netted just twice in three matches, so will Clotet change his squad for this fixture?

Here’s our predicted lineup…

The Blues should stick with their regular defence given that goalkeeper Lee Camp and the back four in front of him have played in all three Championship games this season – meaning Kristian Pedersen, Harlee Dean, Marc Roberts and Maxime Colin should all remain.

There could be a debut for deadline day arrival Jefferson Montero, which would add width to the side, especially as Jacques Maghoma is expected to miss the match through injury.

The Swansea loanee has been awaiting international clearance to play but Clotet seemed confident about his chances after the Forest defeat at the weekend.

A change of system would allow Lukas Jutkiewicz to gain a partner – a problem we have previously highlighted on Football FanCast – meaning a defensive midfield option could be required if the Blues boss goes with Alvaro Gimenez as that second striker.

Ivan Sunjic might be favoured over Gary Gardner and David Davis as he’s the more out-and-out defensive midfield option of the three, playing 84 of his 93 career games in that very role.

The change would also allow Dan Crowley to play in a more advanced attacking midfield role, which could bring a solution to the aforementioned problem in attack.

Former Liverpool player Stan Collymore identifies the three best young players at the club

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former player Stan Collymore is excited about Liverpool’s prospects in the future due to the quality of the young players already at the club.

What did he say

Liverpool took a different approach to transfers this summer and with Jurgen Klopp not looking to add to his first-team squad, young players with the potential to develop were the focus of the club.

Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg arrived from Fulham and PEC Zwolle respectively, and will feature in Liverpool’s youth set-up until they are considered ready for the step-up to the senior squad.

The club has enjoyed success from its academy in recent years through the emergence of Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Collymore is a big admirer of the right-back.

Speaking on his podcast, The Last Word with Stan Collymore , the former striker picked out three big prospects at the club: “The future is very bright for Liverpool.

Harry Wilson, he’s going to be a massive plus for them and I do wonder, thinking ahead, Harvey Elliott, a young teenager that’s gone to Liverpool, [along with] Harry Wilson – we’ve still got Trent Alexander-Arnold – that when those two guys hopefully go into the Liverpool team, Trent will be a veteran.”

Of the three only Alexander-Arnold has featured for Liverpool in a competitive game, but Wilson is edging closer to first-team involvement and if he does well on loan at Bournemouth this season – which he is currently with two goals in two games – then he could become a part of Klopp’s plans soon.

How important is promoting youth for Liverpool

Compared to clubs like Tottenham and Arsenal there have not been many Liverpool academy products who have worked their way into first-team contention in recent years, but Alexander-Arnold is a shining example of how well it could work.

Big things are expected of Elliott, too. Last season the 16-year-old became the youngest ever player to play in the Premier League after he tallied an impressive record of five goals and three assists in his 12 youth appearances for Fulham.

Klopp has proved he isn’t afraid to hand youth players a chance, last season Ki-Jana Hoever and Curtis Jones featured on the pitch whilst Rhian Brewster was included in the matchday squad against Barcelona and Tottenham in the Champions League.

Judging by their accomplishments so far Collymore is right to name the three players he did, and if Wilson and Elliott emulate the attitude shown by Alexander-Arnold they may not be too far behind him.

Arsenal could be frustrated by David Luiz’s long balls, just like Frank Lampard

[ad_pod ]

Frank Lampard was “annoyed” by David Luiz’s refusal to follow his philisophy by excessively using the long ball during Chelsea’s pre-season game against RB Salzburg. It is something that could also be an issue for Arsenal manager Unai Emery at Arsenal.

On the chalkboard

Luiz was a big part of the Blues’ pre-season and started the match against the Austrian side. Chelsea eventually ran out 5-3 winners, but Lampard was annoyed by his centre-back persistently spraying long balls instead of playing out from the back as he wanted, according to the Athletic.

The former PSG man has since moved on to Arsenal, who he joined on the final day of the summer transfer window. But for Unai Emery, Luiz’s style of play could be a similar issue moving forward.

“They have the bigger mentality” – Spurs fans come to blows after the North London Derby in the video below…

Too many long balls

The defender has always been a good passer of the ball. Last season under Maurizio Sarri, he registered a pass accuracy of 88%, and in his two full seasons with Paris-Saint Germain in Ligue 1, he averaged over 89% on both occasions.

However, his tendency to look for a more direct pass is clear for all to see. Last term, he averaged 10.5 attempted long balls a game in the Premier League, which was more than any Chelsea player other than Willy Caballero, who only started two matches. Whilst he did manage to complete six a game, he failed to land 4.5, which, bar Caballero once again, was far more than any of his teammates. At Arsenal last season, only the goalkeepers averaged more unsuccessful long balls every match.

Emery’s style is also based around being on the ball and playing from the back. His side averaged 56% possession last term, and all five of his main centre-backs were in the top six of the most passes per game completed for the Gunners. With none of them averaging more than eight attempted long balls per match, it was clearly something that they were instructed to largely avoid by their boss.

Luiz’s erratic desire to play more directly was a problem for Lampard, and it could be for Emery too. Whilst he can attempt to take this out of his game, it is hard to teach old dogs new tricks.

Rangers fans slam Michael Stewart’s verdict on Ryan Kent

Plenty of Rangers fans have been left annoyed by Michael Stewart’s verdict on their swoop for Ryan Kent, and they all have the same response for the former Hearts and Hibs midfielder.

Finally. After an entire summer of Gers fans begging their club to sign Kent, the Liverpool winger has made the permanent switch to Ibrox.

At just 22 years of age and already with a PFA Young Player of the Year award under his belt, the value of the move is there for all to see.

£7m is a lot of money in the Scottish Premier League, sure, but Steven Gerrard is getting the player he wants and one young enough to make an impact in Glasgow for years to come.

Watch Rangers Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Stewart however, is baffled by the Gers’ investment, saying: “Liverpool were keen to sell him rather than loan him out again and if it was the case and they were going to sign him, why wasn’t it done before and get him settled into the team?”

He continued: “Rangers lost £15m (exact figure is £14.3m) in their last accounts just under a year ago in November when they came out, so £7m is a big chunk of money and it’s a case of where is that money coming from?”

Perhaps needless to say, these comments have not gone down well with the blue half of Glasgow, and after one fan responded to the comments by tweeting that they got the money from getting a pound for every time Stewart has said something “stupid”, several others responded with the same joke.

Barcelona fans react to Rafinha’s latest injury setback

Rafinha Alcantara completed his loan transfer from Barcelona to Celta Vigo just this summer and he hasn’t yet been able to make his official debut for the new club.

And by the looks of it, it seems that the 26-year-old Brazilian will have to wait a bit longer before he’ll don his new colours in the 2019/20 La Liga season.

Watch Spanish Football Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Celta Vigo have officially confirmed that Rafinha suffered an injury during Monday’s training and will be out for approximately two weeks due to a “grade I fibrillary rupture in the soleus of his left leg”.

And as soon as this news came to light, Barcelona fans expressed very mixed reactions. This, of course, is a very familiar situation.

Rafinha has suffered numerous injury setbacks in his career and one extremely serious case arrived last season, so this is nothing really new or surprising to them.

Some were really supportive of the Brazilian, wishing him a speedy recovery, others couldn’t believe this was happening all over again and some were not surprised by it at all.

Man Utd fans react to former star Nani’s stunning performance in the MLS

[ad_pod ]

A man who will forever be remembered by Manchester United fans for his ‘seal’ dribble against Arsenal, Nani continues to make his mark in the MLS.

The Portuguese star spent several seasons at Old Trafford, and whilst he didn’t quite match the heights of his international teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, he enjoyed a trophy-laden career in his time at Manchester.

Since leaving United, the 32-year-old has been around the block in the footballing world, but has truly found his home at Orlando City in the USA.

Nani scored an impressive brace in his side’s thrilling 3-3 draw with New England Revolution, and the display saw Red Devils fans flood to Twitter to share their thoughts on their former star.

Many supporters of the Manchester side hailed him as a “baller” and admitted they may have gotten rid of him too soon.

Some fans even suggested Nani is still better than some of the players at the club now, and wondered whether he could make a return to Old Trafford.

Man Utd’s transfer mess since Sir Alex’s exit makes their failure unsurprising

[ad_pod ]

From signing Romelu Lukaku to selling Lukaku, from signing Angel Di Maria to selling Di Maria, Manchester United have quite literally gone full circle on certain occasions when it comes to their transfer policy in recent years.

Since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, the Red Devils have had a ridiculously confusing way of going about things.

Several managers have come and gone at Old Trafford, each of them leaving behind some more mess to clean up for their successor. It’s perhaps one of the key reasons behind why the club have failed to win the Premier League since 2013.

There needs to be a level of consistency both in terms of the managers being appointed and the players being signed. Instead, United have had a mish-mash of styles and personalities, and the breakdown of the club’s transfer history really puts things into perspective about the lack of planning at the club.

David Moyes – Tried and trusted

The first man to follow in the footsteps of Ferguson, David Moyes undoubtedly had the toughest job of the lot.

He was stuck in between a rock and a hard place on whether to completely rip up the template, or affect slow change. In the end, his lack of decisive action on leaving his own imprint on the club cost him dear.

The former Everton boss must have been wary of walking into a dressing room dominated by players who had only ever known one man. Just how would they respond to a new voice?

It was, therefore, no surprise to see the Scot turn towards Marouane Fellaini who had been a key figure for him on Merseyside and had registered 177 appearances for the club.

Then, Moyes went for another Premier League-proven player in Juan Mata who had been at Chelsea previously. His two major signings were designed not to upset the apple cart. Perhaps that’s exactly what he needed.

Louis van Gaal – High-profile stars

Having sacked David Moyes less than a full season into his time in charge, United thought they would fix their mistake with the former and appoint someone who had managed some of the biggest and best clubs in Europe.

Louis van Gaal strode in with an international reputation and his love of the word philosophy, something he turned to in many press conferences. In the market, the Dutchman spent big on transfer fees on international quality stars who had proven their worth at other clubs.

His first summer saw marquee deals for Angel Di Maria and Falcao be completed and per Transfermarkt, the Red Devils spent in the region of £175m on new talent.

The following year saw Anthony Martial arrive for £36m, including add-ons – the most expensive transfer for a teenager at the time.

Another deal that perhaps went under the radar was the £31m capture of winger Memphis Depay. Both Martial and Depay had carved out promising careers at both AS Monaco and PSV respectively but enjoyed different fates.

The former made an incredible 56 appearances in his debut campaign, while the latter never truly nailed down a place in the starting eleven – from January 2016 to the end of the season, the Dutchman started just four Premier League games in total.

Jose Mourinho – Physical beasts

Then came Jose Mourinho. “The Special One” had a seemingly clear vision in his mind and the club’s hierarchy tried to match his early demands. His first transfer window saw notable arrivals in the shape of 6 foot 5 Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the 6 foot 2 Eric Bailly and the 6 foot 3 Paul Pogba, among others.

The 56-year-old seemed intent on building a team that could physically dominate the opposition. The captures of Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof further reinforced his squad with tall and strong players. It was, therefore, no surprise that eventually critics slammed the Red Devils’ slow and lethargic style of play.

One quote from Paul Ince particularly springs to mind: “Don’t be a dinosaur and start attacking teams like we have done over the years.” It was a damning statement and summed up what United had become since Ferguson.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Whilst Solskjaer may not have had too long in the job to really stamp his mark on the side, the Norwegian’s plan is already becoming crystal-clear.

The United boss is intent on re-energising the team with more youth and pace, and some of the side’s best performances under him have been games where counter-attacking has been key – most notably this season against Chelsea.

The work the club did in the summer transfer window symbolised the kind of cleansing approach Solskjaer is taking.

Gone are the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez – players who were on big-money, £530,000 between them, and not exactly justifying their mammoth wages.

The latter in particular spectacularly failed to deliver on expectations, scoring just five times for the club.

Instead, Solskjaer has invested in younger, British players who could potentially be a part of the United set-up for the next decade or so.

Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire arrived and now reports suggest the club will be looking to sign Jadon Sancho and James Maddison next summer.

Verdict

Taking things at face value, United have made some stellar signings in recent history. The biggest issue though? Each manager has had a transfer window that could essentially have been designed for separate clubs. No cohesion, no consistency and no plan.

The biggest difference in approach comes with how Solskjaer is attempting to rip up everything Mourinho had imprinted.

It could well turn out to be the right idea, but it needs a sense of clarity from those at the top. Even if things don’t end up working out with the current United boss, the Red Devils can ill-afford to start from scratch again.

What they need is a sense of direction and purpose about the kind of profile of player they are looking for, regardless of who happens to be at the helm at that time.

United’s transfer history since Ferguson’s retirement has been a mess. It’s about time they clean it up.

Man Utd fans slam teenage prospect Tahith Chong after Rochdale display

[ad_pod ]

So it appears being 19 doesn’t give you a free pass. Tahith Chong has been tipped to enjoy a bright career by some, and featured prominently for Manchester United during the club’s pre-season tour.

The teenager is amongst a clutch of Red Devils youngsters looking to make their mark at Old Trafford, and was handed the chance to start against Rochdale in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

The Dutchman however failed to grab his opportunity and struggled to impose himself on the game. Before being subbed off in the 59th minute, Chong managed no shots on target, dribbles or accurate crosses.

After seeing the 19-year-old’s display, United fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the former Feyernoord man.

Many supporters of the Manchester side insisted he simply isn’t good enough to make it at this level, with one fan in particular describing him as a “poor man’s Stewart Downing”.

Some Red Devils fans hammered his end product, and labelled him as “atrocious”.

Spurs boss Pochettino mustn’t treat Eriksen differently to Alderweireld & Vertonghen

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Following a dreadful display against Olympiacos in the Champions League, Tottenham Hotspur contract rebel Christian Eriksen was, probably deservedly, dropped to the substitutes’ bench for the Premier League trip to Leicester City at the weekend.

Marca reported earlier this month that the Denmark international has rejected every Daniel Levy contract offer on the table as he waits for Real Madrid to make their move, and it’s hard to argue that he has been 100% committed to Spurs when it has come to his performances this term.

Nothing went right for the 27-year-old in Athens as he picked up a 3/10 rating from Football London for his display, yet he still managed to stay on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.

If Mauricio Pochettino showed some faith in the Dane then, it was a different story when it came to naming his starting XI at the King Power Stadium as he was left among the substitutes.

The Argentine manager is lucky in that sense that he has great competition for places – in theory anyway – with Son Heung-min, Dele Alli, Erik Lamela and Giovani Lo Celso – when he returns from injury – all able to fill in for Eriksen.

If Pochettino is going to be ruthless when it comes to one of the main playmakers in his team, he must do the same to two key players in Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld when they don’t perform, too.

The Belgian duo are in a similar boat to their teammate because their own deals are due to expire next summer, and therefore they shouldn’t be treated any differently even if perhaps there is a little less competition for the centre-back berths.

As things stand the north London outfit will lose them either in January for a fee or next summer for nothing, and therefore their manager should be looking to the future rather than sticking with them when theyare below-par.

He does have Davinson Sanchez and Juan Foyth to call upon when needed, and he shouldn’t be afraid to blood both of those for the good of the future of the club if Alderweireld and Vertonghen aren’t up to scratch.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

There has been signs of that as well with the latter not great and giving away an uncharacteristically cheap penalty in the draw with Olympiacos as Spurs crumbled having taken a 2-0 lead, while the former struggled to deal with the pace of Jamie Vardy and Harvey Barnes in the opening 45 minutes at the weekend.

If Pochettino wants the respect of his players and the fans, he shouldn’t be treating those two players any differently to Eriksen if their below-par displays continue.
