Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Munaf dies at 84

He played four Tests for Pakistan, from the late 50s till the early 60s

ESPNcricinfo staff29-Jan-2020Mohammad Munaf, the former Pakistan fast bowler, has died. He was 84 years old.Munaf played only four Tests for Pakistan, from the late 50s to the early 60s, but hovered around national team selection for a number of years. He toured, without playing a Test, with the Pakistan side on their famous first tour of the Caribbean in 1957-58, in which Gary Sobers made his then world-record 365 and Hanif Mohammad played one of the great rearguard innings of all time, the 337 at Bridgetown.Munaf was born in Bombay (as it was known then) but settled in Karachi and it was there, as a strapping young fast bowler, that he first made his name in the famous Rubie Shield school tournament. At that time, he was good enough with the bat to have opened the batting with Hanif for Sind Madrassah. The late historian Khadim H Baloch wrote in his that Munaf delivered off a short run-up and had a slingy, round-arm action and some reports had him, at his peak, as one of the fastest bowlers in the country at the time. But his career coincided with early riches in Pakistan’s pace resources. Fazal Mahmood, Khan Mohammad and Mahmood Hussain were all starters for the national side ahead of him; in fact, his debut Test against Australia in 1959-60 only happened because Hussain was unavailable. He would go on to play only three more matches, all in Pakistan, with a best of 4 for 42 against England in Lahore in 1961-62.Munaf’s potential was never in doubt, though, as evidenced by two trips he made to England as part of the Pakistan Eaglets squad – which was essentially an A team back then. His career-best figures – 8-84 – came on an Eaglets tour in 1963, against Kent. England may have been a good place for his bowling and though he was picked for what turned out to be a disastrous tour in 1962, he had to withdraw with a leg injury.Munaf was also part of Pakistan’s squad to India on the 1960-61 tour, though once again he didn’t play a single Test.”The PCB is saddened by the news of Munaf’s passing away,” Ehsan Mani, the chairman of the PCB, said. “Munaf was one of those respected cricketers who made their name at the first-class level in the early days of Pakistan cricket. We share the grief of his friends and friendly and express our deepest sympathies.”

Arsenal youngster with no interest in playing for Arteta now ready to quit

Arsenal could be set to lose one of their young talents after it emerged that he wants to leave the club this summer, with the Gunners potentially set to receive nothing for him.

Arsenal set for big summer

Though they are currently leading the Premier League, Arsenal still have clear areas to strengthen under Mikel Arteta. Am out and out striker is desperately needed, but so too is a midfielder with Kai Havertz looking more comfortable higher up the pitch and the Gunners yet to truly replace Granit Xhaka after he departed last summer.

Meanwhile, Thomas Partey has struggled for fitness this season, making just his sixth Premier League start against Spurs. Elsewhere, Jorginho and Mohamed Elneny are both out of contract, while decisions will have to be made on Emile Smith Rowe and Fabio Vieira, neither of whom have kicked on this campaign.

It is certain that once more, the club will spend big in central midfield this summer, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes among those that they are considering. But they won't have it all their own way.

Midfielder could leave for free

That comes as it seems that they are set to lose a talent for nothing in the shape of academy man Charlie Patino. The midfielder has spent successive seasons out on loan in the Championship, but after a strong start to his time at Swansea he has fallen down the pecking order, and hasn't started a game since New Year's Day.

With the likes of Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly now having moved ahead of him in the Gunners pecking order at academy level, and it seems a departure is likely. In fact, Patino is desperate to make one happen, with Italian media claiming that he has "no intention of staying at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta".

He has drawn admiring glances from both AC Milan and Roma, while the idea of the Serie A is said to "fascinate him". But there is yet no winner of the race, largely because the pair are also battling it out for scout Michele Fratini, who is perhaps the biggest proponent of Patino's talents in world football.

Arsenal midfielder Charlie Patino.

"He’s one of the greatest midfielders around. Left-footed, has innate class and is complete, as he’s adept at recovering balls as well", he told the media last year.

“Plays long balls well and has an excellent long range shot. I put five stars on him. He’s a diamond. I saw him two years ago, but now he’s consecrating himself by taking over Arsenal, one of the biggest teams in England. For him, if I were a chairman, I’d do crazy things.”

Therefore, whoever wins that battle is also likely to win the services of Patino, who will be available on a free transfer this summer with his contract up in north London. Despite his clear talent, it will not be a loss that Arsenal feel too keenly at this moment in time.

Sri Lanka look to end torrid run and mar Kieron Pollard's 500th T20 party

The hosts have had a poor sequence of results under Malinga, but the world champions haven’t done much better

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando03-Mar-20201:45

Kieron Pollard – The T20 behemoth

Big pictureBefore the ODIs, you could make the claim that these two sides were relatively evenly matched. And although it’s true that West Indies are defending T20 world champions and Sri Lanka will have to qualify for the main draw of the T20 World Cup later this year, perhaps they are not so far apart in the shortest format. West Indies have failed to win each of their last five T20I series, even losing a recent match to Ireland, with whom they drew the series 1-1. Of their last eight series – a sequence that stretches back to July 2018 – they have only won one. What is almost beyond doubt, however, is that West Indies possess greater firepower with the bat, and have the greater number of game-changing players. Lendl Simmons, Kieron Pollard, Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell and Shimron Hetmyer are each a daunting prospect on their own, let alone in the same batting order. Perhaps their bowling is weaker, but with Dwayne Bravo’s immense experience to call upon, they will still back themselves.Sri Lanka, who were thrashed in T20Is in both India and Australia in recent months, will hope that the good vibes and confidence from the ODI whitewash will roll on into the T20I series. As a bonus, Sri Lanka have regained Angelo Mathews the bowler. Before 2015, he had actually been one of the canniest new-ball operators around, frequently delivering tight powerplay spells, allowing the likes of Lasith Malinga or a spinner to attack from the other end. With Thisara Perera appearing to have hit form with the bat, and Avishka Fernando in good nick as well, the hosts will hope to end a torrid stretch of T20I form.Form guide
West Indies WLLWL
Sri Lanka LLLLLIn the spotlightCan Lasith Malinga feasibly captain the side in the T20 World Cup this year? Here is perhaps the most important question for the T20 side right now. The team won a T20 World Cup under his leadership in 2014, but that was a different age, with outstanding senior players in support of Malinga’s leadership. The worry now is that Malinga is too poor a man-manager to get the best out of his players, many of whom are reasonably young, and often inconsistent. Although still the best player in the team, Malinga’s captaincy record since taking over a second time is beyond woeful. If Sri Lanka have another poor series under him, especially after they have had an outstanding ODI run, the selectors may step in.With Chris Gayle out of the picture, the superstar Sri Lanka fans will most want to watch over the two matches is undoubtedly Andre Russell. Thankfully for them, he comes into this series in good form, having carved up the Bangladesh Premier League only seven weeks ago, hitting 225 runs at a strike rate of over 180, while taking 14 wickets as well. And although West Indies have been through a lean run in terms of series victories, Russell has not been a part of a West Indies XI since August 2018. If there’s anyone who can change an entire side’s fortunes, it’s him.Kieron Pollard holds very little back•AFPTeam newsWith Evin Lewis not picked in the squad, West Indies have a decision to make as to who will partner Simmons at the top of the order. They could even be tempted to try Shai Hope, who although not always a first-choice T20I player, has been in outstanding touch in Sri Lanka. Brandon King is another opening option. The bowling is harder to predict. Provided Fabian Allen has recovered from the shoulder injury he sustained during the third ODI, they may be tempted to play two spinners.West Indies (possible): 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Shai Hope (wk), 3 Shimron Hetmyer, 4 Kieron Pollard (capt), 5 Nicholas Pooran, 6 Andre Russell, 7 Dwayne Bravo, 8 Fabian Allen, 9 Hayden Walsh Jr., 10 Sheldon Cottrell, 11 Kesrick Williams/Oshane ThomasAlthough Kusal Mendis is in excellent form, there is a chance he could be left out in order to bring Shehan Jayasuriya – who bats, but also bowls offspin – into the side, to give captain Malinga another spin option.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 2 Avishka Fernando, 3 Kusal Perera, 4 Shehan Jayasuriya, 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Dasun Shanaka, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Wanindu Hasaranga, 9 Isuru Udana, 10 Lasith Malinga (capt), 11 Lahiru KumaraPitch and conditionsThe pitch for the third ODI seemed a little slow, but that didn’t stop both teams scoring 300. Generally, Pallekele surfaces do a little bit for the seamers, under lights. No rain is forecast.Stats and trivia Sri Lanka have lost 11 and won only a single T20I under Malinga since he took over for the second time in late 2018. He picked up four wickets in four balls in the one match they won. Sri Lanka have won six, and lost only three matches against West Indies. One of those losses was in the 2012 T20 World Cup final, however, and another came in the 2016 World edition. This match will be Kieron Pollard’s 500th T20.

USMNT star Tim Weah starts season off with goal as Weston McKennie doesn't play in lopsided Juventus win over Como

Tim Weah scored Juventus' second goal of the day, following a finish from Samuel Mbangula with a fantastic strike just moments before halftime. Unfortunately for Weah, who started on the wing in Thiago Motta's first official match in charge, a knock suffered just moments before his finish prevented him from continuing on after halftime.

His U.S. Men's National Team teammate Weston McKennie was named to the bench but remained an unused substitute as Juventus secured a 3-0 win, with goals from Mbangula, Weah, and Andrea Cambiaso.

Weah's spot in the starting XI was a good sign for USMNT fans, but even better was the position that start came in. After spending most of last season as a wingback, Weah returned to the wing, the role he occupies with the USMNT. He had also been training as a striker during preseason, indicating that Motta sees him as a key attacker for Juve going forward.

McKennie, meanwhile, was included after a summer full of transfer rumors. He'd been left out of the team altogether during preseason, but Motta recently backtracked and admitted that McKennie could have a part to play this season. While the manager may have him in his plans, not playing him on Monday suggests otherwise, allowing those transfer rumors to persist as the window closes.

While Weah's goal was his first in Serie A, it wasn't his first goal for Juventus. He had previously scored for the club in the Coppa Italia, netting against Salernitana in a 6-1 win back in January.

Aston Villa monitoring "outstanding" winger who’s scored 3 times vs them

Aston Villa are believed to be interested in completing the summer signing of an “outstanding” new attacker who’s scored three times against them in the past.

Aston Villa transfer news

This summer promises to be an exciting one at Villa Park, with likely Champions League qualification giving them a great chance of signing players who can make Unai Emery's squad even more formidable. Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso has been linked with a move to Villa, with a recent report even claiming that he is "close" to securing a switch at the end of the season.

Mario Hermoso

Michael Olise, who continues to stand out as Crystal Palace's brightest young talent, is also catching the eye. The 22-year-old has scored nine goals in just 12 league starts this season, and that tally would likely be far greater if it hadn't been for injuries.

Villarreal attacking midfielder Alex Baena is another rumoured target for the Villans, having enjoyed a brilliant season for the Spaniard outfit, registering 12 assists in 30 La Liga starts in 2023/24 to date, also boasting experience playing under Emery on his CV.

There are some players who could leave Villa in the summer window, however, with Diego Carlos reportedly pushing for an exit, according to a recent update.

Aston Villa eyeing "outstanding" attacker

According to Takvim [via Sport Witness], Aston Villa are keen on signing Wilfried Zaha this summer, but they are facing competition from another Premier League team. West Ham are the club in question, with agent talks and negotiations taking place with both sides over a potential move for the Galatasaray winger.

Aston Villa transfer target Wilfried Zaha after a Champions League game with Galatasaray.

The Ivorian joined the Turkish side on a free transfer from Crystal Palace last summer, but his time there hasn't necessarily gone to plan, with only 13 league starts coming his way. He has scored nine times, however, and could represent an exciting option for Villa.

At 31, the former Palace and Manchester United man may not be getting any younger, but he knows the Premier League inside out, netting 68 times in the competition overall. The Villans know all about the threat he can pose, having allowed him to score against them three times in the past. Ally McCoist was one of many to heap praise on him during his time at Palace, calling the winger "absolutely outstanding".

Zaha could provide an added spark in the wide areas for Villa, at a time when Emery will be needing to juggle both Premier League and Champions League football, something the Palace legend now has experience in.

Granted, there may be younger options out there, but there is still enough left in the tank for the tricky star to enjoy a number of good years in a Villa shirt.

Jhye Richardson undergoes further shoulder surgery

The fast bowler initially dislocated his shoulder last March

ESPNcricinfo staff07-May-2020Jhye Richardson, the Australia fast bowler, has undergone further surgery to stabilise the shoulder he dislocated last year which led to him missing the World Cup and Ashes tour.Richardson suffered the original injury in the second ODI against Pakistan in Sharjah last March when he dived in the outfield. It would end up keeping him sidelined for six months and he has played just once for Australia, in the one-day series against South Africa, since then.Although he was able to bowl at good pace during the Australian season he was hampered in the outfield and the shoulder popped out again on occasions. It is hoped Richardson will recover in time for when cricket could resume later this year following the Covid-19 pandemic.”All the ligaments become loose when you do dislocate and then the surgery essentially involves tightening things up,” CA’s head of sports science, Alex Kountouris, told . “A lot of other players have had that in the past. We’re hoping that will fix the problem.”It’s a lengthy surgery but it does give him an opportunity now that we’re not going to play until…September, October, November or December…he’s obviously a chance with that.””It was nasty [the original injury]. He dived with a lot of force on his arm. It was something that was quite bad. It’s probably not surprising he’s had ongoing symptoms and not surprising in general for cricketers because they do need their shoulders to be fairly mobile.”Richardson has taken 24 wickets in 13 ODIs and six wickets in two Tests which were against Sri Lanka in early 2019.

Dyche must drop 6/10 Everton dud to unleash "phenomenal" ace

Everton will be looking to make it four Premier League wins in a row when they travel to face Luton Town at Kenilworth Road this evening.

Sean Dyche's side claimed a third successive top-flight victory last time out, beating fellow strugglers Brentford at Goodison Park, following on from the impressive 2-0 win over local rivals Liverpool.

A second goal in three matches for midfielder Idrissa Gueye secured a vital 1-0 win for the Toffees, as Dyche's side also kept their third clean sheet in as many games.

The Toffees secured their top-flight safety last weekend, extending their ever-present Premier League status for at least another season despite receiving a total of eight points deducted this campaign.

Despite the fantastic team display against Thomas Frank's side six days ago, Dyche should be looking to drop one player to give his side the best opportunity of extending their current winning run.

Why Youssef Chermiti could make way vs Luton

Although he made his first Premier League start in the win against Brentford last weekend, striker Youssef Chermiti could be in danger of dropping back to the bench ahead of the meeting with Rob Edwards' side tonight.

The youngster featured for 89 minutes during the victory, only managing to achieve 33 touches – the fewest of any Everton player who started the game.

The Portuguese forward also only managed to complete 15 passes, an average of one every 16 minutes, at a completion rate of just 68%.

Although he ran the channels well, Chermiti failed to impose himself as the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin or Beto would've, winning just five duels during his time on the pitch, but also losing 11.

It's clear he tried to make a positive impact on the encounter, but his eagerness to score saw the striker stray offside three times and gifting possession away ten times.

Liverpool Echo journalist Chris Beesley awarded the 19-year-old a 6/10 rating, the lowest in the starting lineup, with Dyche needing to unleash another forward against the Hatters.

The man to replace Chermiti against Luton Town

Although he's struggled with injuries again this season, striker Calvert-Lewin, who was dubbed "phenomenal" by former boss Carlo Ancelotti, has been a solid source of goals for the Toffees once again, with his tally of six in the Premier League the joint-most at the club, alongside Abdoulaye Doucoure.

He missed the win over Brentford with a knock, but in his pre-match press conference yesterday, Dyche confirmed that the striker was back in training and in contention for a return tonight.

His latest setback came at an awful time for the 27-year-old, who had managed to find the back of the net in three of his last four outings, including against Merseyside rivals Liverpool.

With Luton's pitch being one of the narrowest in England's top flight, the Toffees may resort to playing the occasional long ball tonight, with Calvert-Lewin's height and aerial ability potentially playing a huge part tonight.

He's averaged 6.2 aerials won per 90 this season, as per FBref, with the striker potentially being the difference in what could be a tight and cagey affair as Luton battle for Premier League survival.
