Richard Gleeson on England hopes: 'Never give up, keep following your dream'

Five years after making his first-class debut at 27, Richard Gleeson is closing in on an England cap

Matt Roller04-Jun-2020At the age of 27, Richard Gleeson had all but given up on his dream of playing cricket for a living. After a series of odd jobs for a boiler firm, at a fishing tackle shop and as a landscape gardener, he landed a coaching job at the Lancashire Cricket Board, which he combined with his minor counties career for Cumberland. He was at peace with the fact a professional career had passed him by.Five years on, he is back in training at Emirates Old Trafford, after being named in England’s 55-man training group for this summer’s internationals, with the possibility of a full debut in sight.”To go from a club cricketer at 26 to an England international at 32, it would be amazing,” he says on a Zoom call. “I probably had thought ‘I’m not going to get any opportunities, so I’ll enjoy what I’m doing’.”I had my career path with the coaching… that’s the direction that I was going down. Like any club cricketer, I was enjoying it – I’d always try to play to the top standard I could in minor counties. And then James Middlebrook came to me and said there was an opportunity to maybe play some cricket at Northants. I said: ‘I’ll take it’.”That led to a first-class debut against the touring Australians in 2015, and the wickets of the Marsh brothers on debut. He impressed head coach David Ripley enough to win a pay-as-you-play deal for the following year, and a starring role in Northants’ title-winning T20 Blast season earned him a gig in the Bangladesh Premier League.ALSO READ: Northants unknown is fit for England, says Ripley (2017)He was soon wearing an England shirt, representing the Lions in early 2018 after his ability to hit speeds of 90mph/145kph caught the eye, and signed with Lancashire later that year to be closer to his girlfriend (now fiancée) Laura and their new-born baby. Last season saw him take 56 wickets despite injury setbacks, and earn contracts in the Hundred, Big Bash and Abu Dhabi T10. After touring Australia with the Lions over the winter he now finds himself in contention for a full debut later this summer.”It’s just a great story to never give up, keep following your dream and keep pursuing things, because you never know what could happen and when. It’s a great advert for minor counties cricket as well. I think they’ll enjoy the story – if it [a debut] happens, and hopefully it does, it will make a nice read.”Gleeson has been bowling with both red and white balls since returning to training, but is more likely to be in contention for an ODI cap than a Test one. He had a chastening time in Melbourne Renegades colours over the winter, leaking more than 10 runs per over, but feels better equipped to reach his top speeds and use ground dimensions to his advantage after working closely with the team’s bowling coach Shaun Tait. The combination of a packed schedule and the prospect of running two squads in parallel this summer means that rotation among fast bowlers is highly likely, and Gleeson can reasonably hope that a chance to impress the selectors might be forthcoming. While his inclusion at the age of 32 might come as a surprise – not least with 35-year-old Liam Plunkett’s age the main factor in his omission – Gleeson thinks that his relative inexperience and physical fitness means his body is that of a man several years younger.

“It is a tough old game, and it takes a lot out of the body. When I’ve had scans on things, physios at Lancs say to me I’m like nothing that they wouldn’t expect to see in any normal 32-year-old, let alone one that has been playing cricket. Hopefully, I can play for a little bit longer and they see me as a little bit younger.”I’ve read a lot about the football in Germany – I think their injury rates are up 250% – so we’ll take it steady and that’s why they’ve got [so many] players in this squad. There will be people who get injuries.ALSO READ: Closed doors could open opportunities for fringe players – Mo Bobat”I’d like to think my performances have warranted me having an opportunity and getting a go. I’ve had a couple of chats over the winter on what areas I need to work on and what I need to do.”While Gleeson says he did not feel apprehensive about re-starting training, there are some slight concerns for later in the summer. He is anxiously making contingency plans for his wedding – scheduled for early October – and faces the prospect of spending several weeks away from his young family.”I read somewhere that it could be nine weeks away from families. When I told my fiancée that, she wasn’t too impressed with having a nine-week-old baby and night feeds to do, and then a two-year-old getting up at the crack of dawn.”But Laura is really good: she understands that it’s only a short career, and to come from where I’ve come from, I’ve got to take every opportunity that I can. She’s always pushed me into it, and wants me to go as far as I can.”

Mauricio Pochettino had his first press conference as manager of the U.S mens national team Friday, and it's sparked conversation from around the footballing world. Notably, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and Inter Miami manager Tata Martino both commented on the hiring.

Martino and Pochettino are both Argentine, and Guardiola and Pochettino had previously faced off multiple times in the English Premier League when he was manager of both Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur.

boss praised Pochettino, and is expecting him to achieve great heights. Martino is of the belief that Argentine managers are some of the best in the world, and holds the now-USMNT boss to that standard, too.

"The Argentine coaches, the Argentine school [of thought for football], not only in the players, is dominant in the world. We were trained in an environment that requires being almost like a boy scout, ready for everything. It gives us a different strength," Martino said Friday of Pochettino.

GettyWHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

"I wish him and the USA — I have friends there — the best of luck," Guardiola said of Pochettino on Friday. "I know he's a top-class manager, an experienced manager."

The duo have clashed on the touchline 25 times over the course of their managerial careers, but the City boss has bested him more often than not. In total, Guardiola has a 14-7-4 (wins, draws, losses) record against the Argentine. However, the Spaniard holds Pochettino to the highest regard, and has praised him for accepting a job in a market he deems to be "fascinating."

"The USA is fascinating to try to build a project for many years and being able to get the national team to the next step," Guardiola said. "The potential with the USA is there for the amount of people and sports and so on. If he has decided it's because it's the best for him."

Colin Ackermann rampant as Leicestershire triumph in sprint finish

Lancashire’s rookie attack routed as 150 target is hunted down inside 16 overs

ECB Reporters Network04-Aug-2020Leicestershire 409 for 8 (Slater 172, Ackermann 94) and 150 for 3 (Ackermann 73*) beat Lancashire 322 (Vilas 90, Croft 63) and 236 (Davies 54, Croft 52*, Mike 4-39) by seven wickets Captain Colin Ackermann led the charge as unfancied Leicestershire completed a sensational seven-wicket victory with just eight balls remaining in the Bob Willis Trophy match against Lancashire at Blackfinch New Road.Ackermann finished on 73 not out off just 41 balls as the Foxes chased down their 150 runs off a 17-overs target, hitting ten fours and a six in an extraordinary display of shot-making on a slow pitch. Young left-hander Harry Dearden played an important role, hitting Lancashire strike bowler Tom Bailey for consecutive sixes over long-on before reverse-sweeping left-arm spinner Tom Hartley high over extra cover for another maximum. It was hard to take for a Lancashire side badly hit by England call-ups and injuries, and for whom three bowlers were making a debut, and in particular Steven Croft, who earlier in the day led a determined defensive effort, finishing unbeaten on 52 after facing 185 balls before Lancashire were bowled out for 236 in their second innings. The morning had seen Leicestershire make an encouraging start after Lancashire resumed on their overnight score of 96 for 3, Chris Wright finding the inside edge of Rob Jones’ bat and seeing the ball loop from the batsman’s front pad high into leg side, where George Rhodes, running in from short midwicket, took a comfortable catch.Lancashire captain Dave Vilas was joined by Croft and the two experienced batsmen dug in. Leicestershire’s bowlers knew they had to be patient on a slow, placid track, though Vilas did give one chance, clipping a delivery from left-arm seamer Dieter Klein low down the leg-side, but wicket-keeper Harry Swindells, diving to his left, could not hang on.It was beginning to look as though Vilas and Croft could match or exceed their first-innings partnership of 130 until the shortly before lunch, when the South African tried to steer a wide delivery from left-arm spinner Parkinson through point, only to bottom edge the ball into his stumps. If that was fortuitous for Parkinson, his next wicket was anything but, George Balderson going back to a delivery which spun sharply back into the left-hander’s pads to dismiss him leg before wicket. Croft remained immoveable, but the loss of Danny Lamb, leg before to a full delivery from Ben Mike, lifted Leicestershire spirits as they went in to tea with 32 overs remaining in the match.Mike made it two in two balls by immediately producing a beauty to find the edge of Bailey’s bat, Swindells taking a brilliant one-handed catch to his right. Hartley fought hard before being leg before on the back pad to an Ackermann delivery which turned, and Ed Moulton’s second duck of the match left the Foxes a target of almost nine runs an over.Having hit 94 before being run out by his partner in the first innings, Ackermann played superbly to complete a personal return of 168 runs in the match, along with two wickets and some outstanding captaincy in overseeing the taking of 20 wickets on a pitch which offered the bowlers relatively little assistance.

Wants to quit: £300k-p/w Man City star ready to leave as PSG eye transfer

One Manchester City star is now looking to leave the Etihad Stadium this summer despite Pep Guardiola's admiration for him, according to a new report.

Man City exit rumours

Pep guided Man City to a historic fourth successive Premier League title this past weekend, with a 3-1 win over West Ham on the final day ensuring City would pip Arsenal to the trophy.

However, despite City sitting top of the pile in six of the past seven seasons, it could be a summer of change on the blue side of Manchester. There have been rumours on a number of star players potentially leaving the Etihad, with Kevin de Bruyne's future unclear amid interest from Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, first-choice goalkeeper Ederson could also head for the exit door, with the Brazilian also having interest from the Saudi Pro League. Stefan Ortega’s future could also be decided in the next few weeks, with new contract talks stalling.

To make matters worse, an outfield star seemingly has his heart set on a move away over the coming months.

Bernardo Silva ready to leave Man City

According to Football Insider, Bernardo Silva has made a transfer decision and wants to leave the Etihad this summer. Paris Saint-Germain have made the midfielder a top target, with the £300,000-a-week star is now ready to quit after winning a sixth Premier League title in seven years.

Bernardo Silva celebrates scoring for Manchester City.

Silva, who arrived from AS Monaco, has been a key performer under Guardiola in recent years, but it looks as if his days in Manchester could now be numbered.

As can be seen, his stint with the Sky Blues has been extremely successful, with Guardiola praising the 29-year-old on a number of occasions.

"Everybody loves him and we want him. He's really important for him to stay with us", said Guardiola after Silva’s FA Cup double against Newcastle United in March.

Back in October, the City boss also called Silva irreplaceable: "I could stay here and talk for 10 minutes on what Bernardo Silva means for me and our team. He is a player that is beyond good in all departments – solidarity, intelligence, he understands everything.

"We are in love with him. The problem is he has no big cars, he dress maybe not for high style. He is humble and everybody loves him in the locker room. We were lucky not to lose him. He is irreplaceable. I know he is happy here."

Nuno must cash in on Nottingham Forest man who’s rinsed the club of £5.8m

Nottingham Forest certainly haven’t been shy of a transfer or two since promotion to the Premier League, with owner Evangelos Marinakis desperately looking to improve the squad for the first Premier League campaign in over 20 years.

The board certainly backed former boss Steve Cooper, allowing him to make at least 15 signings during the summer of 2022, with many being a success at the City Ground.

Neco Williams and Taiwo Awoniyi were two of the club’s first additions within the window, with the latter impressing when fit, scoring 17 times in 53 appearances since his £17.5m move from Union Berlin.

However, not all of the Reds’ signings have proven to be a hit, with one player in particular struggling in the East Midlands despite a lot of hype around his move following on from promotion.

Lewis O’Brien’s stats at Nottingham Forest

After beating Huddersfield Town in the play-off final, the Reds decided to raid the Terriers for their key players, signing two players upon promotion.

The club bought Harry Toffolo and Lewis O’Brien for a combined £10m – with each respective player costing £5m each – a bargain in today’s market it must be said.

Whilst Toffolo remains at the club under Nuno Espírito Santo, O’Brien isn’t so lucky, with the 25-year-old midfielder spending the 2023/24 season on loan at Middlesbrough in the Championship.

However, last season he made 17 appearances for the Reds in all competitions, scoring a singular goal in the 3-2 defeat against Fulham at the City Ground during the first few months of the campaign.

O’Brien would subsequently move on loan to DC United for more consistent game time, but it wouldn’t catapult him into the Forest first-team once more, with his time in the East Midlands seemingly over less than two years after his arrival.

How much Lewis O’Brien earns at Nottingham Forest

Despite not featuring during this season for the club, Forest are still paying O’Brien a hefty wage, pocketing £15k-per-week at the City Ground, as per Capology.

He would’ve earned a total of £800k during his first season on Trentside and when coupling his £5m fee with his total earnings, it would’ve seen the club splash £5.8m – a hefty chunk, which works out to nearly £350k per appearance.

CB – Scott McKenna

LWB – Harry Toffolo

ST – Taiwo Awoniyi

Whilst he certainly looked like a shrewd addition at the time, he’s failed to live up to expectations, with his market value dropping to just £4.2m – as per Transfermarkt – as a result of his lack of impact.

With the Reds once again needing to raise funds his summer to avoid another PSR break next season, they simply must offload the 25-year-old, with the former Huddersfield man clearly no longer in Nuno’s plans at the City Ground following his two recent loan moves to the USA and England's second tier.

Amid reports that Boro could be keen on seeking a permanent move for O'Brien, this summer should represent the perfect time for a clean break.

Australian team leaves for England series after gathering in Perth

The squad linked up from around the country for the first time since March

Andrew McGlashan23-Aug-2020The Australia squad linked up from around the country for the first time since March and flew out of Perth on Sunday, bound for England, to follow West Indies, Ireland and Pakistan as countries to resume international tours in the “new normal” of the Covid-19 era.As with the other series to take place in England over the last couple of months the negotiations to make it happen have gone to the top level of governments on both sides of the world with the final sign-off for Australia coming just a couple of weeks ago.Preparation for the players has differed significantly between states, through a combination of climate and Covid-19 restrictions, ranging from those in Queensland and Western Australia being able to have centre-wicket practice to almost full lockdown in Victoria. The New South Wales-based contingent have been training in their own group for several weeks and were told to avoid public places such as cafes and restaurants with Covid-19 numbers bubbling along in the state. In Victoria, where Melbourne has been under stage-four restrictions for three weeks, captain Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell have been almost fully home-bound – not even allowed to visit supermarkets – except for training under very strict guidelines at the Junction Oval away from state team-mates.Australia’s Sydney contingent aboard their flight to Perth, ahead of leaving for the UK•Adam ZampaSteven Smith gave an insight into the level of precautions being taken with an Instagram post showing him in mask and gloves as he made his way to the airport where he then did a social-distanced interview with the media who were told to stay three metres away. The atmosphere of the tour will be far removed from when Smith was last in the UK for the World Cup and Ashes a year ago.”I’m looking forward to getting back into it, obviously it’s going to be a bit different than what we’re used to being in a bubble and playing with no crowds,” Smith told reporters at Sydney airport. “That presents a challenge in itself, but one we’re looking forward to. I do like batting there, unfortunately there’s going to be no crowd there to egg me on and give me a bit more motivation.”For some of the players who enter the biosecure bubble it could be a way of life for the rest of the year; 12 of the squad will head to the UAE for the IPL after the England series, while the remainder of the party who return back to Australia will be required to quarantine for two weeks in Perth.

“I’ve been very strong with the guys in the last couple of weeks about making sure that we do literally everything we can with regards to the protocols to keep the global game going. Because at the end of the day, if that fails then we are all out of jobs and the game is not in a healthy state.”Aaron Finch

The IPL-based players who also play international cricket are then likely to return straight into another bubble for the start of the home season involving India and maybe Afghanistan, while even those playing domestic cricket – the structure of which is still to be confirmed – are increasingly likely to have to enter hubs to enable the season to take place. In the week leading up to the tour, the tone has been that every effort must continue to be made to keep international cricket going.”I’ve been very strong with the guys in the last couple of weeks about making sure that we do literally everything we can with regards to the protocols to keep the global game going,” Finch said. “Because at the end of the day, if that fails then we are all out of jobs and the game is not in a healthy state, which we can’t afford to have.”The England series itself is a brief affair with three T20Is followed by three ODIs, a trip that would normally be low-key by the standards of England-Australia tussles but, as with any sport taking place at the moment, now has huge significance attached. From the ECB’s side it means they will have been able to complete their full men’s international summer; CA will be hoping they can pull off the same feat later in the year.On the field, Australia will be aiming to continue their strong T20I form, which has seen them win nine of their last 11 matches – although there is now no T20 World Cup to aim for this year – while in ODI cricket they will be looking to atone for last year’s World Cup semi-final defeat and find the missing ingredients to their 50-over form.Three players could make their international debuts – wicketkeeper batsman Josh Philippe, fast bowler Riley Meredith and left-arm quick Daniel Sams, who have all earned selection largely on the back of their Big Bash returns. Their first taste of the Australia set-up will be something few could have imagined six months ago.

£35 million defender wants to join Maresca as Chelsea eye new priority

A £35 million player, who will be representing his country at Euro 2024, is keen on making the move to Chelsea this summer – and he's apparently a new priority target for the west Londoners.

Chelsea set for busy summer as Boehly targets multiple defenders

After sealing the free transfer of Tosin Adarabioyo from Fulham, the consensus is that Chelsea could still bring in another defender.

"It will continue to be a busy summer at Chelsea," said Romano on Chelsea's transfer plans after bringing in Enzo Maresca to replace Pochettino.

"It won’t be completely crazy but they will try to make smart things happen, including a new goalkeeper and I expect them to try for at least one new centre-back, but it could be two."

Apart from West Ham, Chelsea conceded more Premier League goals than any other side in the top ten last season, and there defensive fragilities were on display for all to see in certain games.

Doubts also surround the futures of both defender Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella. Indeed, GiveMeSport claimed this week that Chelsea could opt to sell either one of the pair, as they also plan to bring in a new full-back who would replace them.

Bournemouth defender Milos Kerkez, who will don the Hungarian jersey at Euro 2024, which is set to kick off on Friday, has been linked as an option for Maresca's side. The 20-year-old starlet made 28 league appearances for Bournemouth last season, attracting attention from England's elite, and it is believed Chelsea chiefs have been talking about signing Kerkez behind-the-scenes.

Kerkez wants to join Chelsea after emerging as priority target

GiveMeSport have an update on this from the last 48 hours, and they claim that Kerkez is keen on joining Maresca at Chelsea.

They also state that the full-back has emerged as a priority target for them, amid claims that he could cost around £35 million to prise away from the Vitality Stadium. Kerkez has a growing reputation and carried himself very well last season, despite still being a very young player operating at the highest level.

"Milos is a great boy. A crazy dude, in a good way. He is always positive and smiling,” said former teammate Mat Ryan.

“Hopefully he can develop even further in England and become even more mature. He is aggressive, powerful and has so many qualities. A unique skill set. Bournemouth is going to get stronger because of him. Milos still has a great career ahead of him.”

Babar Azam hits career-best 114 not out as Somerset cruise to victory

Babar becomes third-quickest to 5000 T20 runs as Somerset maintain quarter-final bid

ECB Reporters Network16-Sep-2020Babar Azam’s career-best 114 not out from only 62 balls set up a convincing win for Somerset in Cardiff, maintaining their outside chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals.They also improved their net run rate, with Glamorgan losing ten wickets with 25 balls of their innings remaining. The Glamorgan bowlers weren’t at their best, and the fielding was sub-standard, with Babar dropped twice. He then made the home team suffer as he guided his team to a total far beyond the par score at Sophia Gardens this season.Glamorgan’s reply was a pitiful affair from the moment they lost their first two wickets in nine balls balls, with the game over as a contest when they collapsed to 47 for 5, and then 62 for 6 at the halfway stage.

Somerset, who were put in on the same slow pitch where Glamorgan defeated Northants the previous Sunday, lost two wickets in the opening three overs and were 39 for 2 after the Powerplay.Steve Davies was the first to go when he was stumped from Prem Sisodiya’s quicker ball, and in the following over 18-year-old Will Smeed, who made 82 against Gloucestershire last week, mistimed an intended pull to give mid-on a simple catch.Babar, who was dropped from a difficult chance to cover on 10, scored freely on either side of the wicket, and reached a rapid fifty from 34 balls, and put on 52 with Tom Abell for the third wicket, before the Somerset captain lifted Andrew Salter’s offspin to long-off.Babar was reprieved on 67, when Marchant de Lange, whose first over went for 18 runs, had him dropped at third man, where Owen Morgan misjudged a top-edged cut. He was well supported by Lewis Goldsworthy, the 18-year-old debutant who impressed bowling left-arm spin in England’s U-19 World Cup campaign.Babar reached his century in the 19th over, the second fifty coming from just 23 deliveries, with the partnership for the fourth wicket yielding 110 in 10.4 overs. He also reached the landmark of 5000 runs in T20 cricket, becoming the third-fastest man to get there after Chris Gayle and Shaun Marsh.

Roelof van der Merwe started Glamorgan’s demise by having David Lloyd and Chris Cooke caught at backward point in his opening over, both by the substitute fielder George Bartlett. They reached 38 for 3 off the Powerplay, but the rot then set in as the batsman found ways of getting themselves out.Morgan top scored with 24, but there was little resistance from the others, with the margin of victory testament to Somerset’s overwhelming superiority.Matt Maynard, Glamorgan’s coach, rued his side’s slipshod effort in the field. “Catches win matches, and when you drop the world’s best T20 opener in the third over, you are going to suffer,” he said.”I have been involved here for some years and have spoken about this, and nothing has happened. The fielding tonight was poor, and it has to improve.”
