Sunderland losing £3m star would be as big a blow as Clarke leaving

Sunderland fans would have hoped that there would be a bit more optimism in the air around the Stadium of Light ahead of the 2024/25 campaign kicking off, but the mood still feels sour.

The Black Cats remain without a manager, as the saga to find Michael Beale's permanent successor continues to irritate those situated in Wearside, whilst there's plenty of talk surrounding a number of Sunderland's top gems packing their bags for pastures new this summer.

Sunderland winger Jack Clarke.

Jack Clarke's name is always being floated about as a potential outgoing, after bagging 15 goals last season to be a ray of sunshine to cut through the doom and gloom, whilst Dan Neil's contract situation could soon raise the anxiety levels, with the homegrown product reportedly hesitant to commit to Sunderland owing to the precarious manager situation.

Chris Rigg is another face that the powers that be at Sunderland will be desperate to hold onto past this transfer window, with new reports suggesting he's in the same camp as Neil when it comes to securing his immediate Black Cats future.

The latest on Chris Rigg's future at Sunderland

According to Sunderland Echo journalist James Copley, there's a deal in principle agreed between the Championship side and Rigg for the now 17-year-old to sign a professional deal at the Stadium of Light.

But, with notable interest from elsewhere for the teenage sensation potentially tempting, and no new boss occupying the Black Cats dug-out just yet, Rigg hasn't yet penned the deal put forward to him.

Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg.

Sunderland will aim to tie down their highly-rated starlet soon, to avoid an uncertain Neil-type scenario, knowing that the wide-eyed midfielder could be a huge part of the Wearside outfit heading into the future.

Arguably, keeping a firm grip on Rigg could be as crucial as Clarke sticking it out in Sunderland quarters for the next campaign, with what the teenager could offer over many years to come, before potentially then being sold on for far more than the reported £3m price-tag that had previously been placed above his head.

Rigg's importance to Sunderland

Given plenty of first-team experience by interim boss Mike Dodds last campaign, with Rigg amassing 21 second-tier games, the youngster never looked too out of his comfort zone, as the nimble number 31 held his own.

Rigg would end up helping himself to two strikes from those Championship clashes, as the Academy wonderkid featured, in some capacity, in the last 13 matches of the otherwise disappointing season for his team.

4. Bali Mumba

5. Dan Neil

Sourced by Transfermarkt

Already immortalised into the Sunderland hall-of-fame, as can be seen looking at the table above, it would feel like a kick in the teeth for the Black Cats if Rigg was moved on already, with a major move up to the Premier League perhaps a premature switch for a starlet who is still inexperienced at a senior level, having only made 25 professional appearances for his current employers to date.

Whereas, there would be obvious anger if Clarke was moved on in the short-term, but there would be no qualms if the electric winger wanted a higher-up move, having been a loyal servant to Sunderland for many years now, accumulating 122 games in the process.

Whereas, Rigg – who was described as being a "warrior" by ex-Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray – has only just started his journey, and could be a huge sale down the line, after further endearing himself to his loyal set of supporters. Thus, losing him now would not be ideal in the slightest – he could just become one of the best to emerge out of the academy in quite some time.

Dan Neil isn't the only 'outstanding' Sunderland star who could leave

Sunderland will be keen to keep this star around at the club even if Dan Neil moves on.

Celtic could forget about Bernardo by signing SPFL star

Celtic could use the summer transfer window, which officially opened for business last Friday, to make additions to bolster their playing squad.

The Hoops won two trophies during the 2023/24 campaign as they lifted the Scottish Premiership title and the SFA Cup in May, beating their local rivals to both.

Brendan Rodgers, however, may want to go in search of a domestic treble, which was achieved by Ange Postecoglou the season before, next term.

In order to do that, the Northern Irish manager could need to improve his options across the park by dipping into the market before the window slams shut at the end of August.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers looks on.

Whilst that could involve new additions coming through the door at Parkhead, Celtic are also looking to bring back at least one of their loan stars from last season.

Celtic's pursuit of Portuguese wizard

Portuguese outlet Record, via the Daily Record, recently reported that the Scottish giants are struggling to secure a deal to sign central midfielder Paulo Bernardo on a permanent deal this summer.

The Benfica maestro spent the 2023/24 campaign on loan at Paradise and the club had an option to make it permanent for a fee of £6m, but decided to attempt to negotiate a lower fee with the Liga Portugal giants.

It was stated that the Bhoys were able to clear that hurdle and, yet, a deal does not appear to be close as they have not been able to agree personal terms with the young magician.

Paulo Bernardo

The report claimed that Bernardo is on a substantial wage and is unwilling to take a pay cut to make the move to Scotland on a permanent basis, and the Hoops 'having difficulty' meeting his demands at this moment in time.

Record did not reveal how much the right-footed whiz is on per-week at Benfica but noted that it is a contract that he signed as a teenager when he was viewed as a player with similar potential to Joao Felix, which is why it is a substantial package for the Bhoys to take on.

Rodgers and Celtic could, however, ditch their pursuit of the expensive midfielder by pushing ahead with a deal for reported target Luke McCowan.

Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph recently reported that the Scottish giants have been keeping tabs on the SPFL central midfielder, whose current deal with Dundee is set to expire next summer.

The journalist added that teams in the MLS and the English Championship are also interested in the left-footed dynamo, which suggests that the Hoops are facing plenty of competition to secure his signature before the end of the window.

It remains to be revealed, however, how much Dundee would demand for their star midfielder, as his contract expiring next year means that they run the risk of losing him for nothing if they do not cash in on him ahead of next season.

Celtic can now abandon their pursuit of Bernardo and swoop to sign McCowan instead to bolster Rodgers' midfield for the 2024/25 campaign.

Paulo Bernardo's season at Celtic in numbers

The 22-year-old talent joined the club on a season-long loan from Benfica last summer and enjoyed a solid, but unspectacular, first year in Scottish football.

Celtic midfielder Paulo Bernardo.

Bernardo failed to nail down a regular place in the starting XI, with just 11 starts to his name in the Premiership, but did show glimpses of his quality when given an opportunity to shine.

The likes of Matt O'Riley, Reo Hatate, Tomoki Iwata, and Callum McGregor being on the books provide strong competition for minutes in the middle of the park, which is why the young talent did not rack up starts week-in-week-out.

In his relatively limited time on the pitch for the Premiership champions, though, the Benfica loanee did showcase his ability to make things happen at the top end of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, the Portugal youth international was directly involved in six goals in 11 starts – more than one every other start on average.

However, he also lost more duels than he won and this suggests that the young gem struggled with the physicality of Scottish football in his first, and possibly last, year with the Hoops.

Why Celtic should sign Luke McCowan

The Bhoys could forget all about their pursuit of Bernardo, though, with a swoop to sign McCowan due to his proven quality in the Premiership.

At the age of 26, he would not arrive with as much potential as the 22-year-old Portuguese starlet but is also not an over-the-hill veteran with no room to grow.

The left-footed ace should be heading into the prime years of his career and this means that the Hoops could get plenty of seasons of quality out of him, if he can adapt to playing for Rodgers at Parkhead.

His form for Dundee last season suggests that the potential is there for him to come in and offer more than Bernardo as competition for the likes of Hatate, O'Riley, and McGregor for a starting spot in midfield.

As you can see in the table above, both players struggle with physical duels against opposition players but excel when it comes to scoring and creating goals.

McCowan has proven his ability to score and assist goals at an impressive rate from a midfield position at Premiership level, with more than three times as many goals as Bernardo and 1.1 more key passes per game on average.

The 26-year-old ace, who writer Kai Watson dubbed "tenacious", could, therefore, provide more than the Benfica youngster in the middle of the park, due to his superior quality in the final third.

The midfielder will be able to get back on the field in March after seeing his doping ban reduced to 18 months from four years. There have been reports he may leave Juventus before that time comes, though, with Marseille said to be in talks to sign him in January.

AdvertisementAFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Former France and Marseille star Patrice Evra has given his backing to Pogba joining the Ligue 1 team and said he would contact sporting director Medhi Benatia to encourage him to pursue a deal. He said: "He wants to play football, wherever it is, for example why not OM? I'm going to call Benatia and tell him that the door is open."

WHAT POGBA SAID

Pogba has laughed off the ex-Manchester United player's comments, but did not rule out a transfer. He told : "I laugh because he's Uncle Pat , he said it jokingly. I'm still under contract so it's not credible. The possibility of coming to play in Ligue 1? I'm at a club, I'm just thinking about coming back and getting out of this situation. Of course, you never know what tomorrow will bring, so never say never."

Asked about his reaction to heaving his ban reduced, the France international said: "I was really happy. I hadn't done anything, why would they give me four years? I'll be able to go back to doing what I love the most. It's like I've been given another chance. I've been given back something that had been taken away from me. It's a new lease on life. March is tomorrow, it'll come quickly. And it's something I can't wait to do."

Olise chose Bayern over Chelsea to play in the Champions League next season, dealing a setback to co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, who are attempting to back new manager Enzo Maresca with quality new additions.

They still want to bring in a new winger after missing out on Olise (Nizaar Kinsella), and are currently weighing up alternatives. Reports have since emerged that Chelsea could submit a bid for Atalanta star Ademola Lookman, who spearheaded his side to a surprise Europa League triumph at the expense of Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen and will cost around £50 million.

There are other star wide players who could be on the move this summer, like Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams, and he's also been linked with a move to Chelsea this week. A more expensive but very highly-rated option, according to some reports, is PSG winger Xavi Simons. The Netherlands international started 32 Bundesliga games on loan at RB Leipzig last term, scoring eight goals and racking up 11 assists over a very productive season.

Chelsea willing to make significant bid for Simons

According to reports in Spain, Chelsea are willing to make a significant bid for Simons, but it is unclear whether they're prepared to go as high as his £85 million asking price.

The 21-year-old is also being chased by Bayern Munich, Newcastle United, Manchester United and Arsenal, while Luis Enrique could even decide to keep hold of the Dutchman for next campaign, so it won't be an easy deal by any stretch.

“It will be interesting to see if that’s what Enrique wants, but based on what he’s said publicly, he seems very keen on Simons’ profile," said Ligue 1 expert and CBS Sports correspondent Jonathan Johnson on Simons' future in the French capital (via CaughtOffside).

"There’s been talk of potential offers from the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona, but I think it would have to depend on the offer, because I don’t really see PSG doing business unless there’s an offer that’s deemed too good to turn down.

“I expect decisions to be made soon, and PSG’s preparations for next season can even start now, given that they’ve gone out of the Champions League. There’s still a cup final to win, but Ligue 1 has been confirmed, so Enrique can start discussing with the club which positions need reinforcing and how Simons might fit into his plans for next season.”

Mashrafe Mortaza to represent Gemcon Khulna in Bangabandhu T20 Cup

He can officially join the team only after he tests negative for Covid-19

Mohammad Isam06-Dec-2020Gemcon Khulna won the lottery that determined which team Mashrafe Mortaza would represent in the ongoing Bangabandhu Cup T20. The BCB held a lottery in its conference room today where four teams – Khulna, Fortune Barishal, Beximco Dhaka and Minister Rajshahi – had their names in a bowl. As it turned out, the board director Jalal Yunus drew the name of Khulna from it.Mortaza passed a fitness test and also underwent a Covid-19 test this morning. But only after he tests negative for Covid-19 will he be eligible to enter the BCB’s biosecure bubble and officially join the Khulna team. He had already begun bowling with a full run-up last week following a recovery from a hamstring injury that he suffered last month, which came on the back of him having also contracted the coronavirus a few months back.Khulna, who are in action against Minister Rajshahi in their sixth game today, have two more matches left. Mortaza’s addition means he joins his national side team-mates Mahmudullah and Shakib Al Hasan in their side.Kazi Inam Ahmed, the managing director of Gemcon Sports – the company which owns the Khulna team – said they are happy to see Mortaza join Khulna, a division that has Narail, his hometown and the constituency he represents as a member of parliament, as one of its districts.”We are excited and delighted to have [got] Mashrafe Mortaza in the lottery held by BCB, where four teams participated,” Ahmed said. “Mashrafe has never played for any Khulna franchise in the BPL, so it is a huge deal to have him. He is from Khulna division – from Narail district – where he is a member of parliament, and he will now play the Bangabandhu T20 Cup.”He is always a big impact player, so I am sure this will be a real motivation for the rest of the team. I hope my team can do even better with him around and I wish that he has a good tournament.”When Mortaza was declared fit by the BCB trainer Tushar Kanti Howlader, Khulna were among four teams who had voiced their interest to take the veteran pace bowler.Later on, even Barishal, Dhaka and Rajshahi showed an inclination to have Mortaza in their side. The BCB had already mentioned that once fit, Mortaza would be made available to any team during the competition, and if there was more than one team who was interested in having him, they would conduct a lottery.Mortaza’s last competitive match was a Dhaka Premier League game for Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club against Khelaghar Samaj Kallyan Samity as far back as March 16. By then, he had resigned as Bangladesh’s ODI captain, having led his team to a 3-0 sweep in the ODI series against Zimbabwe earlier that month.

Palmer slotted straight into the Chelsea team and was quick to become their best player in an otherwise disappointing campaign.

So far this season, Palmer has kept up the same form as the 22-year-old has scored six goals and provided five assists in eight Premier League games. However, former Chelsea and Arsenal defensive midfielder Petit thinks that while Palmer has been impressive, he is yet to show 'world-class' form.

WHAT PETIT SAID

Speaking to , Petit said: "Will the hype around Cole Palmer derail his form? No, I don’t think so. Palmer had a very good season last season, but started poorly this season and responded well in September.

"The media are making so much noise about young talented players. Palmer is a very good player but he’s not yet a top international player and that’s the level he needs to reach. He shows promising skills, maturity and personality but he’s done nothing yet if we’re honest and is far from world-class at the moment."

Inexplicably absent from Ballon d'Or nominees, Naomi Girma delivers resounding response as the USWNT roll: Winners and losers from 3-0 win over Argentina

The USWNT defender was the star, scoring twice in a lopsided win that served as an introduction to more newcomers

Somehow Naomi Girma wasn't among the 2024 Ballon d'Or nominees. We're not talking top five or 10 here (where the USWNT had representatives at No. 4 in Sophia Smith, No. 5 Lindsey Horan, No. 6 Mallory Swanson and No. 9 Trinity Rodman). No, we're talking top 30. Anyone who doesn't think Girma is one of the 30 best players in the world knows nothing about the sport, and even less about Girma.

Girma proved that on Wednesday in Louisville – not that she really had to. Defensively, she might be the best in the world. Against Argentina Wednesday night, though, Girma's performance wasn't defined by her defensive perfection, but rather an unexpected spark of attacking genius that even she couldn't believe.

The defender scored the first two goals of her professional career, leading the way in a 3-0 win over Argentina. The first was a powerful header into a wide-open net. The second was a pinpoint-headed finish right into the top corner. In between, she virtually scored a third, flicking a corner off a defender for an Argentina own goal.

"We were all just laughing and so excited," Girma told TNT of her first international goal. "Anytime someone gets their first goal, it’s such a joy and the whole team gets so excited, so it was fun to get mine tonight. I’ve always wanted it."

Girma doesn't seem the type to really take things such as Ballon d'Or votes personally, or go launch some sort of revenge tour, but she sure played like she did. Girma was a force of nature, one that Argentina couldn't handle… not that any other team in the world could.

With Girma at the top of the list, GOAL breaks down the winners and losers from Lynn Family Stadium.

ImagnWINNER: Naomi Girma

The smile on her face said it all. She tried so hard to compose herself, but Girma kept finding reasons to smile even wider. She continually made eye contact with her teammates, starting the process over and over again. It was easy to see how much this all meant to her.

Girma hadn't scored a professional goal for club or country. She'd scored a few collegiately at Stanford but, even back then, this was never really part of her game. The 24-year-old centerback is one of the best pure defenders in the world but, on Wednesday, those goalscoring instincts shined through.

This won't happen often, so Girma took full advantage of the opportunities. She isn't exactly a newly-inducted member of "Quadruple Espresso" or anything, but this happened to be a night – with debutants all over the pitch for Emma Hayes' squad – in which everything simply went right.

It does make you wonder: If Girma can add goals to her game, if she can add one or two a year going forward, how valuable could that be to this USWNT group? Girma is already an elite defender but, if she can chip in an occasional goal, it'll be hard to find many better anywhere in the game.

"To come back together, have that celebration, be back with the group has been great," she said after the game. "And then obviously we’ve had great additions this camp with a lot of players getting their first caps, so there’s been so much to celebrate. And I think we had the balance of we’re celebrating, but we’re also turning the page and moving forward. I think to finish this camp with three great wins, get a lot of different players on the field, see new rotations, see new lineups, is really exciting, and all we could really hope for in this window."

AdvertisementImagnLOSER: Argentina

Iceland, despite the country's small size, gave the USWNT two really good games over the past week. The back-to-back 3-1 scorelines disguised that to some degree, but anyone who watched will say that Iceland tested the U.S. for significant stretches.

Hayes was certainly pleased to get challenged in the first two matches, saying this week "I always say that we can develop and win at the same time. But sometimes you need different challenges. When you have a team that’s familiar with each other, I can keep putting a familiar team out, and that team can keep growing, no problem. But what we won’t do is develop knowledge and understanding of other individuals."

Argentina most certainly didn't challenge the U.S. This was a mismatch. After trouncing Argentina 4-0 earlier this year, the U.S. cruised to this 3-0 win. The Argentines never really threatened, just as they didn't at the Gold Cup in February.

For a country with Argentina's overall soccer heritage, this team still seems so far behind the game's other superpowers. They've been to just one Olympic tournament and four World Cups, never winning a game at the latter.

Argentina couldn't do much against the USWNT. Wednesday was another reminder, though, of how far down the pecking order this team is despite the fact that the potential to be so much better.

ImagnWINNER: Alyssa Malonson

It's been a strong camp for USWNT newcomers. You can add Malonson to that list.

The Bay FC left-back provided an assist in her first USWNT appearance, announcing herself to the national team with a big moment. Malonson was one of three USWNT debutants in the match and she sure made the most of her opportunity.

The 25-year-old has had an interesting career. After opting for a fifth college season at Auburn due to the pandemic, Malonson joined OL Reign, but was then loaned to FC Nordsjaelland. Since being selected by Bay FC in the NWSL Expansion Draft this offseason, though, she's become a legitimate NWSL regular for the league's newest team.

This was just a start, and competition is fierce at left-back. Jenna Nighswonger is the starter, while there are plenty of other players gunning for a role. That assist will help Malonson get into the mix, though, which is all you can ask for from a debut.

IMAGNLOSER: Mandy Haught

This has nothing to do with anything Haught did wrong. It's more that she wasn't asked to do much in the match, period.

Every player aspires to be the hero in their international debut. For goalkeepers, you'd dream of making a big save in a crucial moment, showing your value to the team. Haught didn't get that opportunity… because Argentina never really gave it to her.

Argentina had just four shots to the USWNT's 18. Worse for Argentina, only one of their four was on target. It was a quiet night for Haught, who didn't really get a chance to make an impression.

On one hand, that's unfortunate, particularly with the goalkeeping position where it is. On the other – hey, a clean sheet is still a clean sheet, especially upon debut. So to that end, it was still a night to be remembered for Haught, even if she didn't get a chance to provide a truly memorable moment.

Arthur: With hindsight we would have pulled some of our quicks out of LPL

Sri Lanka head coach on his side’s injury crisis and the difficulty of conditioning players for Test cricket

Andrew Fidel Fernando28-Dec-2020Despite having made their highest ever total in South Africa, Sri Lanka have had an abysmal three days in Centurion, with Dhananjaya de Silva and Kasun Rajitha ruled out of the Test, and Lahiru Kumara also unlikely to bowl again after sustaining what seemed to be a groin injury. Batsman Dinesh Chandimal also appeared to be struggling, having required treatment by the boundary after taking a single off the last ball of the day.On conditioning and Sri Lanka’s build up:
If I take you back to what our preparation was, we built up for a series with Bangladesh [scheduled for October]. We had two residential camps in Colombo. That series didn’t take place and we then had to de-load the players because we couldn’t keep the players loaded up at their level. The South African tour was then on and then off, and then on and then off. So then we had a residential camp where we got our guys back. The background to all of that was that Colombo was in curfew and some of our players couldn’t move out of their homes. A lot of the conditioning work had to be done at home. Then the South African tour was agreed and the board very generously gave us a residential camp. We had two weeks where we began to load the players up again. And then unfortunately we had the LPL. From our residential camp we lost our players to the LPL for a month – through no fault of anybody, that’s just how it worked. Then we got them back the day we left to come to South Africa.Related

In terms of loads, in terms of conditioning, in terms of quarantining, I think you can throw all of that in a melting pot and every one of them played some role.On how bad the injury crisis is:
I don’t know what the prognosis is on Dinesh Chandimal. I’m hoping it’s cramp, but I get the feeling it’s a little bit more than cramp. So that’s another one down. Luckily we brought 21 players, otherwise it would be batting coach Grant Flower at No. 3 and me at No. 4 in the next Test. It is what it is. We’ve just got to work through that and hope that we get some players coming back from injury, and some that are not as bad as what we initially thought. On changing the rules for substitutions, while teams are having abnormal preparation:
In terms of Covid substitutions, I sit on the ICC cricket committee and I will be having a chat at the end of this Test match. India lost one of their quicks today. I suspect that more teams are going to lose their quicks as it goes on. The rigours of the workload is just going to be too much with coronavirus around. If the world was was normal I don’t think we’d be in this situation, because I think the conditioning would be perfect and I think the guys would be ready to go. With this being an abnormal world at the moment, I think that will come up for discussion at the ICC level at some point. We’re down to seven, and if Chandi’s out, we’ve only got six fit players to finish a Test match, which is not good enough for anybody. It’s not good enough for the team, it’s not good enough for the TV audience, and it’s not good enough for our position either. On whether the timing of the LPL, which ended only 10 days before the start of this Test, helped bring on these injuries:
There’s a lot of conjecture about that. The LPL had to be played at that stage in time. It was a tournament that Sri Lanka needed. That was the only window it could be fitted into. Maybe if we had it in hindsight we would have tried to preserve a lot of our main players, but then again that would have devalued the competition. If I had my time again, we probably would have pulled some of our quicks out of it.I think this going to be the narrative we have all the time with our players, with the different franchise competitions, and the fact that 2021 is going to be very busy for most international teams. Getting the balance right is going to be important. The conditioning work and getting enough time for preparation is going to be key. We didn’t get enough time here, and that’s through no fault of anybody. That’s just how the calendar worked out. We knew we were going to endanger some guys which is why we brought 21 players. I certainly didn’t think we’d only have seven fit players in this Test.Wanindu Hasaranga claimed four wickets in 45 overs of toil•AFP via Getty ImagesOn what Sri Lanka’s positives are from this Test so far:
Our batsmen have got in played well. I thought getting 400 on that wicket in innings one – had we had our full attack available – would have been pretty challenging. We’d be sitting here very much in the Test match. We got 396 in innings one on a wicket that was bouncing, seaming and doing a bit. We were aggressive and showed good intent. The other positive I take out of it is the effort levels of every one of the players who were called upon to bowl. Vishwa Fernando has just run in and run in and run in. Dasun Shanaka who was very much a fourth seamer and was picked as the batting allrounder, came in and he did a role for us. He never shirked. Losing our finger spinner in Dhananjaya de Silva and our holding bowler in Kasun Rajitha put our attack under so much pressure. That was really tough to swallow.
