Leeds in pole position to make perfect Abel Hernandez signing

Hull City striker Abel Hernandez is soon to be out of contract, and although a number of Championship clubs have been interested, it looks as though Leeds United are winning the race to secure his signature.

What’s the story?

After four years at Hull City, Abel Hernandez looks set to end his spell at the KCOM Stadium when his contract expires on June 30th, putting a number of Championship and Premier League clubs on high alert.

The striker initially signed for the Tigers for £10million and has scored 39 times for the club.

Aston Villa and Wolves were rumoured to be interested, but according to reports from Lee Sobot of the Yorkshire Post, their interest in the striker appears to have cooled.

As Sobot points out, Villa will struggle financially following their failure to reach the Premier League, and Wolves are closing in on the signing of Benik Afobe.

This should leave Leeds United in pole position to secure the signing with the Uruguay international.

Would he be a good signing for Leeds?

If Leeds are looking to build a promotion-challenging team, they will certainly need to improve on the 59 goals they managed this season.

With strikers often being the most valuable commodities on the market, a free transfer for an international striker with a proven track record of goals is just what Leeds need.

Having netted 28 times in 49 Championship games for Hull, Hernandez seems like the perfect free transfer for Leeds to bolster their attacking options.

Three Man United players West Ham could be in talks to sign

According to reliable West Ham United club insider @ExWHUemployee on his latest The West Ham Way blog, the east London club held talks with Manchester United about a potential transfer deal last week, but it was nothing to do with Marko Arnautovic following the rumour that Jose Mourinho is keen to sign the Austria international.

While @ExWHUemployee says that the Irons have an interest in goalkeeper Sam Johnstone as they look to provide Adrian with some much-needed competition following Joe Hart’s unsuccessful loan spell, there could be a number of other Red Devils players that were discussed.

New Hammers boss Manuel Pellegrini is clearly determined to strengthen his newly-inherited squad this summer, and there are a number of positions across the team that could do with reinforcing – including in attacking midfield after Manuel Lanzini’s huge injury blow while on international duty with Argentina that could keep him out for the entire 2018/19 campaign.

The Chilean boss, whose reign at the London Stadium would be getting off to a calamitous start if he signed a reported 30-year-old target, will have spread his net worldwide, but perhaps some of the solutions to his biggest problems may have been found at Old Trafford.

Here are three Man United players West Ham could be in talks to sign…

Pellegrini reportedly wants to add some youth and pace to his team this summer, and he could certainly do that if he adds the versatile Fosu-Mensah to his squad this summer.

The young Dutchman is highly-rated at Old Trafford, but he suffered something of a disappointing season-long loan spell with the Irons’ London rivals Crystal Palace last season having been brought in and made a regular in the XI in Frank de Boer’s short time in charge, before he fell slightly more out of favour under Roy Hodgson.

Nevertheless, the 6ft 3in 20-year-old can play as a right-back, centre-back and defensive midfielder, and West Ham need strengthening in the latter two positions in particular.

The 6ft 4in central/defensive midfielder enjoyed a brilliant breakthrough 2017/18 campaign for United, and he made 23 first-team appearances in total having clearly impressed Jose Mourinho.

The 21-year-old even kept Paul Pogba on the substitutes’ bench at times, but his opportunities may be slightly more limited in the upcoming season if Pogba finds form again and following the arrival of Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.

If that proves to be the case then Mourinho could choose to loan the Scot out for more regular minutes, and he would be a welcome addition in the middle for West Ham given Cheikhou Kouyate’s struggles last term.

Despite bursting on to the scene in 2016 and looking to have a really bright future ahead of him, Rashford is still yet to establish himself as a regular starter for United, and he was often on the end of some sly public criticism from Mourinho – especially towards the latter stages of the 2017/18 campaign.

The Portuguese manager may feel that a loan spell away from Old Trafford could be beneficial for the 20-year-old, who would surely interest Pellegrini given the pace and overall quality that he has.

Rashford showed with his brilliant strike for England against Costa Rica last week the ability that he has in the final third, and he would certainly add something to the West Ham frontline – whether it be through the centre or from out wide.

Liverpool fans are happy with Ovie Ejaria deal that sees him move to play with Gerrard

Liverpool fans are delighted with the contract extension of prospect Ovie Ejaria and the deal that sees him move to Rangers with Steven Gerrard.

The Reds confirmed he had signed a new long-term contract at Anfield, but will move for the 2018/19 season to Ibrox, helping usher in a new era at the Light Blues under the guidance of Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

The England U21 international has made just eight career appearances for Liverpool and most recently spent a half season on loan at relegated Championship club Sunderland.

A central attacking midfielder, fans are hoping the 20-year-old can learn a lot from Gerrard and return to the Reds better prepared for first team football, with many believing he has an excellent future.

The Scottish Premiership is a physical and quick league, with the pressure of winning week-to-week in front of a 50,000 crowd likely to aid his development too.

Fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on it all…

Leeds fans mercilessly mock departing Wiedwald

Felix Wiedwald is set to leave Leeds United after a horrible season at Elland Road, and fans are mercilessly mocking the goalkeeper on Twitter.

After a debut season in England riddled with mistakes, Wiedwald will join Eintracht Frankfurt this summer.

The calamitous 28 year-old was bashed by Leeds fans all season, as his inability to command his box, claim crosses and sometimes even just catch the ball cost the side valuable points.

The German eventually lost his spot to Bailey Peacock-Farrell, who has been extremely impressive since his emergence.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”257236″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Five things we learned from England 21 Tunisia”]

You could say the fans should be thanking for Wiedwald for being so bad Paul Heckingbottom was practically forced to give Peacock-Farrell his chance, though that might be pushing it a bit.

Lovren receives Twitter apology from ex-Liverpool left-back Riise

Five Bundesliga stars Man United should sign before September 1st

We often think of the Premier League as the greatest top flight in world football but it’s certainly faced a feisty challenge from the Bundesliga over the last few years.

Indeed, the Bundesliga may still be inevitably dominated by Bayern Munich but the quality of the rest of the league appears to be improving with every season. Likewise, the Germans’ more relaxed views on ‘safe standing’ and fan ownership creates arguably the most electric atmospheres in European football.

Where the German top flight still lacks in comparison to the Premier League, however, is finance, which is why we’ve seen a number of Bundesliga stars arrive on English shores already this summer – including Liverpool signing Roberto Firmino and Manchester United’s World Cup-winning midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Could we see even more turn up in the Premier League before the close of the transfer window? Football Fancast takes a look at FIVE Bundesliga stars the Red Devils could snap up in the next few weeks, based on recent speculation.

TIMO HORN

Real Madrid are running out of time to complete their rather arduous pursuit of David De Gea, but that also means Manchester United are running out of time to source an adequate replacement for their PFA Player of the Year nominated No.1.

They’ve been most consistently linked with Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris and Ajax’s Jasper Cillessen, but with both boasting some rather extortionate price-tags within the realms of world-record-breaking, the Red Devils might be forced to consider some less obvious, significantly cheaper options.

At which point, I turn your attentions to FC Koln’s Timo Horn, arguably the most impressive goalkeeper in the Bundesliga last season with 92 saves and 13 clean sheets in 33 appearances – ranking him third and fourth respectively throughout the division.

He certainly lacks the experience of United’s other goalkeeping options, yet to feature in the Europa League or the Champions League, but at 22 years of age is bursting with potential and could prove a very shrewd long-term investment – not too dissimilar a situation to United’s swoop for De Gea in summer 2011.

Horn signed a new contract earlier this year and now tied down to RhineEnergieStadion until 2019, Koln are by no means obliged to sell. But neither are they in a position to turn down sizeable bids, and in 29 year-old Thomas Kessler they have a back-up capable of holding the fort until January.

MARCO REUS

If you caught the news this morning you’ll already know Louis van Gaal has apparently ended his interest in Barcelona star Pedro which makes you wonder what the Manchester United boss might have up his sleeve.

Could we see a shock last minute move for Borussia Dortmund attacker Marco Reus? It’s certainly possible.

After all, the 26 year-old is easily amongst the most formidable and complete attacking threats in world football; famed for his ability to play anywhere across the attacking midfield berth or as an out-and-out striker, whilst producing 37 goals and 27 assists in 82 league outings for the Black-Yellows.

Louis van Gaal loves his ‘multifunctional footballers’ and the German international is certainly one of them, equally adept at the roles of scorer and provider, and his pace would be a huge asset for a United side that struggle to truly penetrate opposition defences.

Reus signed a new contract at Westfalen in February, eradicating his previous outrageously cheap £25million release clause. That means Dortmund could realistically demand anything up to £60million for the 5 foot 11 attacker – but he’s certainly not out of the Red Devils’ reach this summer.

KARIM BELLARABI

A significantly cheaper Bundesliga-inspired alternative to Marco Reus, I find it borderline incredible Europe’s elite are yet to take advantage of Karim Bellarabi’s ludicrously cheap £11million release clause.

The Bayer Leverkusen star may lack experience at top level but his superlative form was unquestionably one of the German top flight’s biggest talking points last season, amassing twelve goals and six assists in 33 appearances whilst averaging the most successful dribbles per match, a whopping 4.7, of any player in the division.

Despite that being enough for the 25 year-old to worm his way into Joachim Lowe’s plans for the German national team, picking up seven caps since his debut last October, Bellarabi still represents a bit of a punt for the Red Devils.

That being said, in terms of power, pace and netting prowess, the explosive winger is exactly what they need. At £11million, in my opinion, he’s certainly worth the gamble.

MARIO GOTZE

If there’s one major name still for the taking during the last two weeks of the summer transfer window, it’s Bayern Munich’s Mario Gotze.

The German international is best famed for his superb winning volley in last summer’s World Cup final but at club level he’s really struggled to impact since swapping Borussia Dortmund for the Bundesliga champions in summer 2013.

Indeed, Pep Guardiola has often dropped the 23 year-old forward for Bayern’s most important fixtures, despite a decent return of 31 goals in 95 appearances, and according to Gotze there’s been a bit of a communication breakdown between himself and the Allianz Arena boss.

Manchester United aren’t exactly in the market for a No.10; they’ve got quite a few playing in less favourable positions already – particularly Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata.

But Gotze is versatile enough to feature in other areas of the Red Devils attack and due to reputation alone he’s certainly the kind of signing that would galvanise the fan base.

The Old Trafford outfit have already been linked with the disillusioned Bayern star’s signature. But recent speculation suggests Arsenal are his likeliest next destination at this moment in time.

THOMAS MULLER

It’s a transfer that seems almost implausible yet eternally dominates the tabloid rumour columns; Louis van Gaal’s relentless pursuit of Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller.

There is perhaps a no more complete attacker in world football than the German international; supremely versatile, sensationally industrious, imperiously physical, and a consistent goal scorer, with 123 goals in 306 appearances for the Bavarians.

His international record of 27 in 63 isn’t too shabby either. That includes ten goals from the last two World Cups, earning him the Golden Boot award in 2010 and firing Die Mannschaft to the international title in Brazil last summer.

Already a World Cup winner, Champions League winner and Golden Boot proprietor at the age of 25, if van Gaal could have his choice of one final signing this summer I’m certain it would be the 6 foot 1 utility attacker.

German publication Bild claim the Red Devils have recently launched a Premier League record £60million bid, but the Bayern hierarchy continue to insist Muller won’t be sold this summer.

Where is Rodgers taking Liverpool exactly?

Carlisle at home was surely a game for Brendan Rodgers to ease the mounting pressure on his Liverpool managerial career. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite go to plan as the reds scraped through via penalties against a side ranked 65 places below them in the football pyramid.

Rodgers joined Liverpool as manager in June 2012 and immediately began installing his passing philosophy into the team. In his first season in charge the reds finished 7th, one place higher than their previous season.

But it was the 2013/14 season where Rodgers and Liverpool saw real improvement. They eventually finished second behind Manchester City after winning eleven straight games and leading the table with three games to go. Unfortunately a 2-0 home defeat to Chelsea followed by a 3-3 draw away at Crystal Palace was enough to gift the title to City. The stars of that season were undoubtedly the forward pairing of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, who between them managed to rack up 52 Premier League goals.

[ffc-gal cat=”liverpool” no=”5″]

The start of the 2014/15 season saw Liverpool’s prize asset Luis Suarez sold to Barcelona for a fee in the region of £75million and he wasn’t the only important red’s player to leave that summer, with Pepe Reina leaving for Bayern Munich and Daniel Agger returning to his native Denmark with Brondby. Rodgers, however did spend £117 million on players he thought would replace those who had left, but also players that would further strengthen the Anfield club.

Suarez’s replacement arrived in the shape of extrovert forward Mario Balotelli (£16million) with Agger’s being Southampton centre half Dejan Lovren ($20million). Rodgers also brought in Southampton duo Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana, German international Emre Can and Benfica winger Lazar Markovic, all for a combined total of £59 million.

Rodger’s signings were not making an impact, with Balotelli being more of a hindrance than Suarez’s replacement, Lambert making only 7 Premier League starts and Can, Markovic and Lovren all failing to impress and live up to their hefty price tags. Liverpool stuttered and, once again, finished outside the top four in 6th position. In doing so, Rodger’s picked up the unwanted title as the only Liverpool manager since the 1950’s to not win a trophy in his first three seasons in charge.

At the end of the 2014/15 season, Liverpool’s hero and leader Steven Gerrard left the club to join the growing list of world class names in the MLS. Gerrard had announced that if he had been offered a contract during the summer of 2014 he would have signed for another year at Anfield; that offer did not arrive until November and, with Rodgers monitoring Gerrard’s playing time, the moment had arrived for the famous number 8 to finally end his wonderful Liverpool career. But could Rodgers have done more to keep a player that would surely have still made an impact on and off the pitch?

With Liverpool starting their current Premier League season slowly and currently lying 13th with two wins, two draws and two defeats to their name, the pressure is increasing on Brendan Rodgers. Rodgers appears unsure of his best starting 11 and can be seen regularly changing formation between a 3-4-1-2, a 4-3-3 and a 4-3-1-2, which can only unsettle his players further.

Rodgers has frustrated many with his constant defence of his team in post-match interviews, regardless of their result or performance. Liverpool lost convincingly at fierce rivals Manchester United with Rodgers starting with inexperienced full back Joe Gomez who later gave away a penalty for United’s vital second goal. The young full back had started the season well, but was Rodgers naïve to not start a more experienced defender? Especially with Sakho, Toure and Moreno all on the bench and, especially, given the magnitude of the game.

It certainly will not get any easier for Rodgers as his side entertain fellow strugglers Aston Villa this weekend. They then face a tough trip to local Merseyside rivals Everton, followed by a trip to face an ever improving Tottenham side.

With former Premier League, Seria A and Ligue 1 title winning coach Carlo Ancelotti currently unemployed and being touted as Rodgers’ potential replacement, along with German mastermind Jürgen Klopp, Rodgers will no doubt be feeling the pressure.

A top four finish is again very unlikely this season and Rodgers must focus on bringing some silverware to the Anfield trophy cabinets, or risk being becoming the first Premier League managerial casualty.

Should Liverpool regret selling this midfield maestro?

Liverpool slumped to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester United at the weekend, which has taken the gloss off the Merseyside club’s campaign start.

Although the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana were missing for the defeated side, the absentee most acutely missed was captain and midfield talisman Jordan Henderson.

Despite Brendan Rodgers opting for a three-man central midfield trident of Emre Can, Lucas Leiva and James Milner, United held control of the game for the majority, with Michael Carrick and Bastian Schweinsteiger winning the majority of the battles.

There is a collective feeling that the Reds’ midfield is slightly unbalanced this season, with the Northern Irish coach yet to find the ideal blend to take the team forward.

[ffc-gal cat=”liverpool” no=”5″]

The departure of Steven Gerrard was always going to be felt after the stalwart made the decision to move to LA Galaxy, but it appears in the early days of the campaign that the Merseysiders are lacking direction from the centre of midfield.

Gerrard’s playing time last season was reduced as the veteran started to feel his age, which was a key reason in the former England international deciding to call time on his Anfield tenure.

However, the long-serving midfielder’s presence, range of passing and authority are seemingly being missed, with Rodgers not finding a solution as yet.

With Liverpool’s midfield concerns in mind, there is a very real possibility that the club are now starting to realise their error in selling Jonjo Shelvey. The former Charlton star was never really given a consistent chance to show what he was capable of for the Reds and has since started to live up to the potential that was evident during his days at Anfield.

Still not a complete midfielder by any means or someone of the same calibre as Gerrard at his prime, Shelvey still has work to do to improve, but the signs are there that he has all the weaponry to be a Premier League star.

Since moving to Swansea, regular football was afforded the midfielder an opportunity to learn from his mistakes, develop his style of play and fine-tune the things he is good at on the big stage.

A key member of Garry Monk’s continually over-achieving side, Shelvey is the creative fulcrum through which the team’s play is dictated; the springboard to propel the likes of Andre Ayew, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jefferson Montero into action.

Shelvey’s eye for a pass has been a key element of the Liberty Stadium outfit’s side in recent years, while his thunderous shots from distance have become a trademark in South Wales.

With this combative performer also adept at putting a foot in and playing a part in the team’s defensive efforts, Shelvey has started to get international recognition also as a box-to-box option for England.

At the time, Gerrard blocked the ex-Charlton man’s path and he opted to leave Anfield in search of regular first-team football.

Fast forward a couple of years and Shelvey would now be an important member of Rodgers’ side.

Chelsea boss blasts ‘stupid’ critics but praises players after Cup exit

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has blasted his critics as ‘stupid’ despite their Capital One Cup exit to Stoke City on Tuesday, according to reports from the Mirror.

The Blues crashed out of the competition after a 1-1 scoreline on penalties to the Potters, with last season’s PFA Player of the Year Eden Hazard missing the decisive shot.

The defeat is another poor result in their extremely miserable start to the season, but despite being knocked out in the fourth round, Mourinho had no bad word to say about his players.

WANT MORE? >> Chelsea Transfer News | Latest Transfer News

He said: “What some people write and say is really bad for the players.

“What the players did tonight is face some people that write and speak, and said: “You are stupid”.’

“Maybe they think my players are like them when they were players. My players don’t do that, they tried everything.

“If anyone saw the second half the other day, playing with 10 men the way they did, it’s a lack of respect for the players.

“It’s difficult. It’s more difficult when you play bad & lose than play well and lose. We go with sadness but a positive feeling.

“We played so well. This first half could finish the game at half-time. Then second half, goal, and they keep going.

“A few months ago I won a few matches and I was champion. People were saying there are things more important than results. Now, people say results are the most important thing. It’s a contradiction.”

It has been reported that this weekend’s clash against Liverpool may make or break Mourinho’s career at Stamford Bridge, as another loss would see ‘The Special One’ sacked only a few months after winning the Premier League title.

However, sacking Mourinho will come at a cost, with owner Roman Abramovich having to pay the former Real Madrid boss around £30million in compensation.

Five bargain buys to consider for Watford on FM16

Its been quite a start to Premier League for the Hornets, who invested heavily in the summer, with safety looking a pretty attainable goal at this point in time.

Their return to the top flight has been a long time coming, but the fans at Vicarage Road must be enjoying the relative success compared to their last visit to the big time.

With success, comes a lot of pressure, so expect quite a challenge to keep your Watford side in the top flight during the first year of your FM16 save. Troy Deeney will hopefully provide you with a decent source of goals, but keeping the diverse squad united can be a challenge in itself.

Watford, however, have the squad at their disposal to develop into a regular top half side in the Premier League within a couple of seasons. The board are likely to be more willing to support you than at many other PL clubs and that should play to your advantage.

Here are FIVE bargains to help you achieve your goals…

Lewis Cook

This young midfielder is one of the players that you will see many Premier League clubs competing for. Cook becomes a highly versatile man in your midfield and, although he may set you back around £7million, is going to be a bargain for the decade of service you get in return.

A player born in 1997 (other than making you feel old), is very unlikely to be quite so complete as Cook and this starlet could help solidify your Watford team in the top flight.

Nathan Redmond

Admittedly, Redmond will by no means be a bargain. The deal you are getting with Redmond is a player with incredibly high potential who could help you push for European football within a couple of seasons.

Redmond will probably cost a huge amount of money for a club like Watford, but, relative to his ability, this is still a pretty good deal.

Electric pace is always a huge threat and Redmond has pace to burn.

Adriano

No, not the fat one, but Barcelona’s utility man.

Adriano will often be offered around to clubs for just a couple of million pounds and he is the ideal squad player, because of his ability to play all the way down either flank.

His two footed game is a rare commodity, whilst a high crossing rating will do well to find Deeney or Ighalo in the middle.

Ruben Pardo

Pardo is the quintessential Spanish midfield player.

The Sociedad man can play anywhere from defensive midfield to a number 10 role, but his crowing glory are his teamwork and vision stats.

Pardo will pick a pass from anywhere on the pitch and could be perfect to spring counter attacks from a deep position, or used as a creator further up the pitch if you are playing a possession based game.

Available for only a few million, Pardo may even pop up on the transfer list if you are fortunate.

Neeskens Kebano

Creativity is often a problem for newly promoted sides, but this bargain from Belgium will help you to make chances for Watford’s powerful strike force.

Available for under £2 million from Genk, Kebano is a natural behind the striker, or out wide, and will naturally create chances because of his high flair rating.

The only down side to the signing of Kebano is his finishing of 9.
