West Ham submit bid to sign Duran alternative who’s better than En-Nesyri

It has been pleasing to see West Ham United show proactivity in the transfer market this summer, instead of biding time and being forced into reactive moves after one disappointing development or another.

Technical director Tim Steidten clearly held some positive talks at the maiden stage with Julen Lopetegui, who has replaced David Moyes, for teenage winger Luis Guilherme has been signed for £25.5m and centre-back Max Kilman has been welcomed to the rearguard for £40m.

Wolves captain Max Kilman celebrates

More is yet to come. The fact remains that signing a striker is the east London outfit's most pressing concern, and if reports are to be believed, the transfer cannon has been levelled in that direction.

West Ham bid for new striker

West Ham have submitted a bid to sign FC Metz striker Georges Mikautadze, who was one of the standout performers for Georgia during their impressive Euro 2024 campaign.

It was Football Insider with the reveal, though they do stress that interest is thick and it would take an offer of €25m (roughly £21m) to convince the Ligue 1 outfit to sell.

With a throng of suitors eyeing up the dynamic striker, Steidten better kick on with negotiations to ensure that Mikautadze moves to the London Stadium.

The Georgian isn't the only striker the Irons could bring to the capital this summer, however, with Aston Villa's Jhon Duran a player said to be on their radar. Fabrizio Romano has even suggested that personal terms have been agreed with the player.

What Mikautadze would bring to West Ham

Rumour has it that Danny Ings is heading back to Southampton, with the respective Premier League sides currently haggling over a £6m figure. The 31-year-old hasn't exactly been brilliant for the Hammers, scoring four goals from 52 appearances.

Danny Ings for West Ham

Moreover, Divin Mubama has left the club after his contract expired and Michail Antonio is now 34, starting just 21 Premier League matches last year as he battled against injuries.

Mikautadze, 23, would be a brilliant addition to shape the frontline with fresh clay, ranking among the top 11% of centre-forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for progressive carries and the top 4% for successful take-ons per 90, as per FBref.

The Georgian ace was in prolific showing in the French top flight last year, scoring 13 goals and supplying four assists across just 20 appearances, averaging 1.1 key passes, 2.1 dribbles and 4.3 successful duels per game to boot, as per Sofascore.

If there have been concerns in the past concerning how the nimble star's skills would translate to life on the major stage, he has dispelled such notions with his talismanic efforts in Germany over the past month, hailed by talent scout Jacek Kulig as the "living legend" of his nation.

Georgia, a nation with less than half the population of London, earned the loftiest of laurels during their historic run to the round of 16, defeating Portugal to rise from the group stage for the first time in their history. They achieved this illustrious feat not through regimented pragmaticism, but through the breezy, free-flowing football of an awe-inspiring side.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia deservedly takes the plaudits as Georgia's prized possession, but Mikautadze proved that he is a figure of similar importance, notching three goals and an assist across four outings.

It might not be the easiest of deals to engineer, with Monaco pressing to complete a deal and a host of further suitors lingering, but West Ham will hope that the allure of the Premier League and the promise of a starring role as the Irons spearhead could tempt the 5 foot 9 forward to make the move to London.

Given Mikautadze's athletic ability, he must be prioritised as the top target to fight for a place as United's focal frontman, and Lopetegui must discard interest in Sevilla's Youssef En-Nesyri to get the move over the line.

How Mikautadze compares to En-Nesyri

As per Spanish reports in June, West Ham have been considering a swoop for their long-term target, who has been transfer-listed for an affordable €20m (£17m) by the Spanish club with his contract set to expire in one year.

Sevilla strikerYoussef En-Nesyri.

The 27-year-old has been described as a "pure goalscorer" by Kulig and indeed would arrive off the back of a sharp scoring season, posting 20 goals across 41 fixtures in all competitions.

He's an imposing target man at 6 foot 3 but not quite the most mobile of players, and as the chart below will show, the Morocco international is one of the lowest-ranking forwards regarding his passing metrics.

[FBCharts] Youssef En-Nesyri-1

Lopetegui will strive to implement more of a passing focus at West Ham than that of his predecessor, with a balanced but flexible structure opening up fluid passing play.

Mikautadze would be the perfect player to add to the mix in this regard, not least because of his crisp and creative emphasis. The Georgia star, further to the point, is progressive and would be able to effectively influence attacking sequences through his driven, penetrative approach into the final third.

Furthermore, the electrifying support of stars such as Mohammed Kudus, Jarrod Bowen and the earlier-mentioned Guilherme makes for the perfect, balanced frontline that would see Mikautadze thrive.

While West Ham have already been active in the transfer market this summer, there's no hiding from the fact that signing a new centre-forward is the priority.

Mikautadze could be the poster boy for years to come, with so much yet to give but so much already showcased. Steidten and Co need to get this one completed with dispatch.

Najmul Hossain Shanto's fifty sets up Rajshahi's emphatic win

Minister Group Rajshahi made it two wins out of two with their six-wicket win over Gemcon Khulna. Their captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s burst in the powerplay, which saw him hitting his first half-century of the Bangabandhu T20 Cup, clinched the game for Rajshahi.Shanto struck three sixes and six fours in his 34-ball 55, as he added 47 runs for the second wicket with Rony Talukdar, who struck a six and three fours in his 26. Shanto fell in the 11th over, lbw to legspinner Rishad Hossain, but Mohammad Ashraful and Fazle Mahmud took them towards the target, before Nurul Hasan got them home with 2.4 overs to spare.Rishad took two wickets while Al-Amin Hossain, who bowled just two overs, and Shahidul Islam took one wicket each.Khulna made 146 for 6 after a late boost of runs from Ariful Haque, the hero of their opening-day win over Fortune Barishal. Ariful slammed two sixes in the penultimate over, in which young pace bowler Mukidul Islam went for 17 runs after bowling three wide balls at the start of the over. Ariful and Shahidul Islam added 42 runs for the unbroken seventh wicket, which spruced up Khulna’s innings that was mostly lackluster.Opener Imrul Kayes was the first to go, caught at short fine-leg after mistiming a sweep off Mahedi Hasan. Shakib Al Hasan, too, got caught playing across the line against Mukidul, at deep square-leg in the fifth over. The Khulna innings unravelled further when Anamul Haque, having made 26 with three fours and a six, was run out in the eighth over. Jahurul Islam and captain Mahmudullah fell in the next two overs respectively, as they slipped to 51 for five in the tenth over. Young left-hander Shamim Hossain revived the innings somewhat, with a 25-ball 35 that had three fours and two sixes. He fell to Ebadot Hossain’s bouncer shortly after hitting his second six, leaving Ariful to play out the last 4.5 overs with the tail.
Gazi Group Chattogram blew Beximco Dhaka away by nine wickets, after bowling them out for a paltry 88. Chattogram reached the target in 10.5 overs, making it one of the biggest wins in Mirpur in terms of balls remaining. Chattogram’s big win will worry the rest of the field in a tournament where the five teams have very little room to make changes to their rosters.Chattogram’s decision to bowl first was vindicated when left-arm quick Shoriful Islam had his Under-19 teammate Tanzid Hasan in the second over, caught at slip with a fine away-going delivery. It followed an infuriating period for Sabbir Rahman, who struggled for nine balls before skying Shoriful in the covers for a duck. But Dhaka had worse luck when their captain Mushfiqur Rahim, uncharacteristically, gave Soumya an easy grab at slip after his attempted reverse-sweep, off the first ball he faced, went awry.Mohammad Naim and Akbar Ali provided a brief respite with their 44-run fourth wicket stand but Mosaddek Hossain bowled both of them in the space of three deliveries. Chattogram hardly gave them an inch afterwards, bowling them out for 88 in 16.2 overs.Apart from Shoriful and Mosaddek’s miserly figures, Mustafizur Rahman and Taijul Islam also took two wickets each while Nahidul Islam, who took the prized wicket of Mushfiqur, and Soumya Sarkar got one each.Soumya and Liton played a range of attractive strokes, including lofted straight drives and punches through cover. They reached 51 in the Powerplay, before taking them to 79, when Liton got out for 34. Soumya remained unbeaten on 44 off 29 balls with four boundaries and two sixes.

O time balançou a rede em dez oportunidades e tomou dezessete gols.

Slot’s own Coutinho: Liverpool ready to fight Man City for £51m ace

The dawn of the 2024/25 campaign will soon poke over the horizon, and Liverpool's new head coach Arne Slot is gearing up his squad for an attack on major honours and the forefront of the Premier League.

While there has been a lack of transfer activity at Anfield this summer, sporting director Richard Hughes, also new, has stressed that there could be a "crescendo" in the market come August.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

FSG love to secure a tidy deal and will pounce if the right opportunity materialises. Well, if one report is to be believed, the perfect new attacking midfielder might be ready to complete a transfer to a success-driven outfit such as Liverpool.

Liverpool transfer news

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Liverpool are alongside Manchester City in hoping to sign Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig this summer, with the Euro 2024 champion valued at €60m (£51m) by his German outfit.

Separate reports suggest that Pep Guardiola's side have lodged an official offer for the 26-year-old, so Liverpool will need to up the ante if they are to sign one of Europe's hottest commodities right now.

Why Dani Olmo could be Slot's own Coutinho

Few players lit up the international scene this summer like Olmo, whose clinical, talismanic efforts helped fire Spain toward a record-breaking fourth European Championship title.

Dani Olmo at Euro 2024
Dani Olmo at Euro 2024

Olmo's all-encompassing attacking game marks him as a truly deadly outlet, and Liverpool would go from strength to strength with him in the side. For Leipzig last season, while stricken by injury, the £152k-per-week talent scored eight goals and added five assists despite only registering 20 starts.

He ranked among the top 12% of positional peers at Euro 2024 for goals, assists and successful take-ons and the top 20% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref, with his "magic" ability with a football – as noted by talent scout Jacek Kulig – setting him up to become Slot's very own version of Philippe Coutinho.

A mesmerising player, Coutinho is one of the Reds' most iconic modern stars, posting 54 goals and 43 assists across 201 games for Liverpool and being sold to Barcelona in a jaw-dropping £142m deal.

That was the watershed moment in Jurgen Klopp's reign, opening up a new, previously unthinkable depth of coffers to spend on the likes of Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk and take the club to a new level entirely.

As you can see above, the Brazil international, now 32, was beyond brilliant during those final, pre-Barca days, meshing it all together to establish himself as one of Europe's finest.

Transfermarkt's Marcel Veth has hailed Olmo as a "joy to watch" but he is also one of the most complete players around, winning four duels and completing 1.2 tackles on average in the German top flight last season, as per Sofascore.

Liverpool have a superabundance of attacking talent at Slot's disposal, but Olmo would offer something different and might even prove to be the second coming of an unforgettable phenomenon in Coutinho.

A bola, porém, apenas saiu perto do gol.

Georgemy agarrou e impediu.

POLÊMICA!

Fábio Alemão segue causando polêmicas no Operário.

Usman Salahuddin hit nine fours•PCB

Usman Salahuddin and Saad Nasim struck half-centuries for Central Punjab in their response to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s 300 in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final, but Irfanullah Shah’s four-wicket haul helped KP end day two as the happier of the two teams. CP ended the day at 212 for 8, with 88 runs behind KP.Shah made the early inroads for KP, removing both the CP openers Muhammad Akhlaq (4) and Ali Asif (8) cheaply. Salahuddin then repaired the early damage, adding 64 and 48 with Mohammad Saad and Saad Nasim respectively. While Saad fell for 26, Salahuddin and Nasim went onto make half-centuries. However, Nasim’s dismissal for 55 off 109 balls triggered a late slide as CP lost four wickets for a mere 22 runs. Shah played a part in it, claiming the wickets of wicketkeeper-batsman Ali Shan and captain Hasan Ali, who was dismissed off what turned out to be the last ball on the second day. Incidentally, Ali had got KP’s Sajid Khan off the last ball on the opening day.Shah was backed up by Khalid Usman, who came away with 2 for 29 in his 13 overs. Khan and Arshad Iqbal, meanwhile, picked up one wicket each for KP.Earlier in the day, KP added 15 runs to their overnight 285 for 7 before they were bowled out. From 266 for 4, they fell to 300 all out, with Ali returning the innings’ best figures of 4 for 62.

Newcastle could land dream Guehi alternative in "exceptional" £85k-p/w ace

Newcastle United will get their Premier League campaign underway in two weeks as they hope to achieve better than their seventh-place finish last term. Indeed, the Magpies will not have European football to get in the way next time out, after failing to qualify following their memorable season back in the Champions League in 2023/24.

They kick off their season against newly promoted Southampton at St James’ Park. The Saints will be looking to continue their impressive form shown in the Championship last term, having won the playoff final against Leeds United. It could be a tricky start for the Toon.

Alexander Isak for Newcastle

The first trip on the road for Newcastle this season is one of the league’s longest away trips. They travel to the Vitality Stadium to face AFC Bournemouth, before hosting Tottenham Hotspur on the 1st of September at St James’ Park once again. The first few weeks will certainly be tough for Eddie Howe's men.

To stand them in the best stead, the Magpies will no doubt need to dip into the transfer window to strengthen their squad. They have already made some moves in the market, and have recently been linked with another Premier League star who can add quality and experience in defence.

Newcastle target Premier League defender

The player in question here is Liverpool and England international defender Joe Gomez. The 27-year-old featured plenty of times in Jurgen Klopp’s final season in charge at Anfield, but could now be one of the players sold by new manager Arne Slot.

According to a report from The Athletic, the Reds were in advanced negotiations with Newcastle to sell Gomez for £45m, with Anthony Gordon making the switch to Anfield in a separate deal but one dependent on the transfer of Gomez.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.

The report suggests that negotiations between the two clubs were so advanced that ‘payment terms were discussed’, and the England national team setup were asked if medicals could be conducted in Germany at Euro 2024, had the deals ended up going through.

At this stage, the deals are no longer imminent. However, ‘the landscape could soon shift’, with Liverpool still targeting Gordon and Gomez set to make a decision on his future in the coming days.

Why Gomez would be a good signing

There is no doubt that Gomez would add great experience and quality to a Newcastle backline that suffered badly from an injury crisis last season. He played 51 times in all competitions for the Reds last term, with 32 of those appearances coming in the Premier League.

Gomez could be an excellent alternative signing to Marc Guehi for the Magpies this summer. According to highly reputable journalist David Ornstein, Newcastle have opened talks for the Crystal Palace defender, who was one of the stars of the show for England at Euro 2024.

He is believed to be valued at £65m by the Eagles, £20m more than what Gomez would cost the Magpies this summer. However, the Liverpool man is on £85k-per-week, slightly more than the £50k-per-week that Guehi currently earns at Selhurst Park, as per Capology.

However, if a deal for Guehi falls through or is not possible for whatever reason, the Magpies could instead fully focus on bringing the 27-year-old Liverpool star to the club and maintain some of the quality they were looking to add at centre-back.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

The pair are certainly comparable when looking at their FBref stats, and Gomez certainly comes out on top in plenty of different areas. Of course, a good place to begin looking is their defensive stats, and whilst they are not the be-all and end-all for defenders, you can still build a good picture.

Firstly, Gomez averages more tackles and interceptions than the Crystal Palace man per 90 minutes. The Liverpool defender averages 3.33, whereas Guehi lies a fair way below with 2.04 each game.

England defender Marc Guehi

Not only that, Gomez is far superior in the air. He has an aerial duel win rate of 75%, yet Guehi averages slightly less, with just 50%. That is one area in which Gomez excels over the Palace defender. He is two inches taller, at 6 foot 2 compared to his England teammate who stands at around 6 foot.

The other aspect crucial to look at is their progressive play. In Howe’s direct system, being able to progress play quickly and efficiently is a huge benefit. The Liverpool man averages 5.05 progressive passes and 4.19 passes into the final third, compared to just 2.98 progressive passes and 4 final third passes for the Palace defender.

The final area Gomez excels in over Guehi is his progressive carrying. The former Charlton ace averages 2.22 per 90 minutes, as opposed to 0.67 for Guehi. Having the confidence to carry the ball out from the back, especially under pressure, could be important for Gomez to be able to do in Howe’s direct system.

Liverpool's Joe Gomez

Now, it is certainly important to take these stats on the ball with a pinch of salt. Last season, Gomez played in a side with far more average possession than Palace, with Liverpool averaging 61.3% as per Fbref, ranking third in the Premier League. In contrast, Palace ranked 15th in the top flight with just 42.3%.

All things considered, Gomez could perhaps be a better option for Newcastle to sign this summer than Guehi. His former manager Klopp highly rates him, calling him “exceptional”, and that is certainly reflected in his stats. It is fair to say Newcastle would be adding a top player to their squad.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.

Given he will cost £20m less than Guehi, and he brings plenty of experience and excellent progressive play in possession, it could be a superb deal for the Magpies to get over the line this summer.

Forget Thiaw: Newcastle could land dream signing for Guehi in £40m ace

The club are still targeting a centre-back this summer.
