Following news that Australia will tour Bangladesh ahead of this year’s T20 World Cup, BCB’s chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury has said that they will also host England and New Zealand. He, however, said that formal announcements will only be made once the tour dates are confirmed by the boards.Chowdhury had said that Australia would play three T20Is as well as a two-match Test series in Bangladesh. But since CA and BCB couldn’t quite fit in the Tests, they have found time for an extra T20I match.”Both boards (CA and BCB) have agreed in principle for Australia’s tour of Bangladesh before the World Cup T20, which is going to be held in October,” Chowdhury said. “It has been scheduled as such. Ahead of the World Cup T20, England, Australia and New Zealand will tour Bangladesh, but a tri-series hasn’t yet been decided.”I think we had a commitment with Australia that they would play two Tests and two T20Is. Since we could fit the T20s we will increase it to three. It is not that it is replacing anything. We would have fit in a Test match if there was enough space. It will be a good preparation for us ahead of the World T20. We have an opportunity to play some high-profile teams.”According to the ICC’s published FTP, England are scheduled to tour Bangladesh in October to play three ODIs (as part of the ICC’s ODI Super League) and three T20Is.Meanwhile, Chowdhury added that all teams can fit in their World Test Championship matches until April after the timeline was extended from March. As such, the BCB is working on a tour of Sri Lanka to play the three-match Test series that was postponed twice last year.”It should be clarified that most of the FTP commitments currently are for the World Test Championships and the ODI competition (ODI Super League). There’s a guideline to complete the WTC matches before the final in June. The guideline to arrange those matches has been extended to April, from March.”To fit in these postponed series, both teams have to be available. At the moment only Sri Lanka is available till April. It is not possible to fit in the rest of the (postponed) matches. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are free in April so we are trying to schedule the two or three Tests of the WTC during that time.”

Selection puzzles for Bangladesh as they look to strike back after Chattogram battering

Shakib Al Hasan and Shadman Islam are out with injuries, while West Indies have no injury concerns

Big pictureOh, how the tables have turned! How beautifully the momentum has shifted West Indies’ way, and the pressure towards Bangladesh.West Indies hold the lead in the series, and therefore the edge, after their debutants Kyle Mayers and Nkrumah Bonner put together a comeback for the ages on the fifth day in Chattogram. Mayers’ unbeaten 210 was only the second time a batsman struck a match-winning fourth-innings double-century. That it came from a debutant, who had very little familiarity with the pitch he was batting on, made it all the more remarkable. Bonner’s 86 was a coming-of-age innings for a cricketer who has waited long. While Shannon Gabriel’s show of deadly pace on such a slow pitch on the third evening was inspirational.Related

Mayers' knock brings father Shirley Clarke to tears

A delighted Phil Simmons, the West Indies coach, continued to be cautious, stressing on finishing the job, something they have failed to do on several previous occasions. But, while the Chattogram win didn’t come easy – Test wins don’t – it is also true that such a result can do wonders to the overall confidence within a squad.Quite the opposite is the case in the Bangladesh camp. Bad as the result was, the news that Shakib Al Hasan wouldn’t be fit for the second Test made things worse. And opening batsman Shadman Islam joined Shakib on the sidelines when he failed to recover sufficiently from the hip injury he sustained while fielding in the first Test. Soumya Sarkar – who underwent the PCR test on February 7 and has been kept in isolation since – has been named Shakib’s replacement, while no replacement has been named for Shadman.Who slots in for Shakib is just one of many questions staring at the Bangladesh team management. Whether the spinners can find their rhythm in the Dhaka Test is going to have a bearing on their fortunes, because, while Mehidy Hasan picked up eight wickets in Chattogram, more would be expected from Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hasan. Bangladesh have a spin-centric bowling strategy, that has now failed more often than it has worked for them, and with the Dhaka pitch likely to be assisting spinners, the make-up of Bangladesh’s team will need careful thought.Form guide

West Indies WLLLL
In the spotlightAfter his match-winning knock in Chattogram, Kyle Mayers will have the eyes of the world on him. He has called himself “a student of the game”, and it will be interesting to see how the newcomer goes, now that he will have a fair bit of hype to live up to.
A maiden Test century to go with eight wickets in the Chattogram Test has given Mehidy Hasan back his Test spot. But he will have to put in another big performace, especially in Shakib’s absence.
Team newsWhenever Shakib isn’t around, Bangladesh struggle with team balance. They have Sarkar, Mohammad Mithun, Yasir Ali and Saif Hassan among frontline batsmen and Taskin Ahmed, Abu Jayed, Ebadot Hossain and Hasan Mahmud among bowlers in the squad. Among them, Sarkar is the closest they have to an allrounder.
Bangladesh (possible): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 4 Mominul Haque (capt), 5 Mushfiqur Rahim, 6 Liton Das (wk), 7 Mehidy Hasan, 8 Nayeem Hasan, 9 Taijul Islam, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Abu Jayed
It is unlikely that West Indies will make changes to the XI from the side that won in Chattogram. They have fast bowler Alzarri Joseph and left-arm spinners Veerasammy Permaul and Kavem Hodge and allrounder Raymon Reifer waiting in the wings, but they might have to continue to wait, barring an injury.
West Indies (likely): 1 Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), 2 John Campbell, 3 Shayne Moseley, 4 Nkrumah Bonner, 5 Kyle Mayers, 6 Jermaine Blackwood, 7 Joshua Da Silva (wk), 8 Rahkeem Cornwall, 9 Jomel Warrican, 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Shannon Gabriel

Pitch and conditionsThe pitch should help spinners more than the one in Chattogram did. Sides batting first in the last five years have averaged around 332, with five out of six teams winning the match after batting first.
Stats and trivia The 216-run partnership between Mayers and Bonner in Chattogram was the highest between two Test debutants in 57 years.
Mehidy is two wickets short of 100 in Tests, while Liton Das is 34 runs short of reaching 1000 Test runs.
Quotes”We start from zero again. We have to go back to the process, we have to practice and prepare well. It is going to be a different wicket, ground and everything. It is important for us to assess again. Going over the processes and ensure we do well.”

“It would have been great to have Shakib in the side in Mirpur but in his absence, myself, Taijul and Nayeem have to take more responsibility. We will try to bowl more in the right areas, so that they can’t play us easily.”

Offer ready: Arsenal target perfect Saka rival in "extraordinary" £42m ace

Two games in, and it would be fair to say that Arsenal's pre-season preparations are going rather well thus far.

A team full of youngsters drew and then beat a nearly full-strength Bournemouth side on penalties last week, and then a slightly stronger team ran out 2-1 victors against Manchester United in the early hours of Sunday morning thanks to goals from Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli.

While a good portion of the squad are now back together, a number of the Spanish and English contingents, including club poster boy Bukayo Saka, are still on holiday due to their run to the final of the Euros.

The Hale End superstar has barely had a moment's rest over the last few years, so signing some genuine competition is a priority this summer, a priority that, based on recent reports, Edu Gaspar and Co are tackling.

Arsenal transfer news

According to the Sunday edition of Mundo Deportivo via Sport Witness, Arsenal have reignited their interest in Barcelona ace Raphinha.

Barcelona star Raphinha.

The report claims that the Gunners are prepared to make an offer worth around €50m – £42m – for the Brazilian winger this summer. However, the report also reveals that Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal have already made a €65m offer, which converts to about £55m.

Yet, the good news for the Gunners is that the winger has no interest in moving to the Middle Eastern league at the moment.

Raphinha Barcelona

Getting the former Leeds United star out of Barcelona this summer could prove costly, but given his talent and Arsenal's need for a Saka rival, it may well be worth it.

How Raphinha compares to Saka

So, if Arsenal are going to splash north of £40m on Raphinha to be the perfect competition for Saka this summer, he'll need to be able to come into the side and maintain a high level of performance on the right, even if there is a slight drop-off.

In which case, how does he compare to the Englishman? Well, when it comes to their output last season, the Hale End superstar predictably comes out on top. However, the Brazilian's numbers are still impressive and suggest he'd be able to perform at a high level for Arteta when needed.

For example, in his 47 appearances for the North Londoners last season, the Ealing-born gem scored 20 goals and provided 14 assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.38 games – simply world-class.

In comparison, the "extraordinary" Barça ace, as dubbed by former manager Xavi, scored ten goals and provided 13 assists in 37 appearances for the Blaugrana, equating to a goal involvement on average every 1.60 games.

So, with it clear that the former Leeds star wouldn't be a dramatic downgrade in terms of pure output, how does he hold up when we look at their underlying numbers?

Interestingly, while the Porto Alegre-born dynamo once again comes out a close second, he does emerge victorious in several important metrics, such as non-penalty expected goals and assists, shots and shots on target, passes into the final third, shot and goal-creating actions and successful take-ons, all per 90.

Ultimately, given Saka's incredible ability, mentality, and consistency, it will be tough for Arsenal to find another rightwinger who is good enough to seriously challenge him for a place in the starting lineup. However, based on his output and underlying numbers, Raphinha might well be the club's best bet for a winger who could get close enough.

Arsenal struck gold on "pure talent" now worth way more than Smith Rowe

The incredible talent has been a sensational player for the Gunners.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Jul 28, 2024

Therefore, Edu and Co must do what they can to bring the Barça star to the Emirates this summer, as signing someone who would allow the club's talismanic number seven to rest more next season is of paramount importance.

Hashmatullah Shahidi gets to landmark 200 as Afghanistan batsmen dominate

He overtook his captain Asghar Afghan’s 164 to register the first double-century for Afghanistan

Firdose Moonda11-Mar-2021

Hashmatullah Shahidi celebrates his century•Abu Dhabi Cricket

Hashmatullah Shahidi became the first Afghanistan batsman to score a double-hundred, and joined his captain Asghar Afghan and Rahmat Shah as the only three players from the country to reach triple figures in Tests, as Afghanistan piled on the fifth-highest total in Abu Dhabi. On a flat pitch, Afghanistan breached 500 and set several other batting records including the second-biggest partnership for any wicket in the UAE. Shahidi and Afghan shared a fourth-wicket stand of 307, Afghanistan’s highest. They also now hold the record for the joint-fewest Tests for a team before a batsmen records a double-ton – 6 – shared with West Indies.Shahidi’s feat came in his comeback series, after he was dropped for Afghanistan’s Test against West Indies in November 2019 amid criticism that he scored too slowly and was susceptible to the short ball. He showed none of those tendencies in this match, with a perfectly paced innings that complemented Afghan’s aggressive approach, and navigated Zimbabwe’s three-pronged pace attack (which includes the more than two-metre tall Blessing Muzarabani whose default length is shorter than most) with ease. There was little to work with for both seamers and spinners and Zimbabwe were reduced to spectators for most of the day. They started well and squeezed Afghanistan in the first hour, with just 23 runs coming off the first 12 overs.Muzarabani adjusted his length to bowl fuller than usual and Victor Nyauchi found some early movement but once Afghan and Shahidi had seen them off, runs flowed and milestones were ticked off.Shahidi, who had been on 86 overnight, reached his hundred with a drive through point and after getting there, took boundaries off Donald Tiripano and Sean Williams. Zimbabwe had the opportunity to get rid of him shortly after that when, on 112, Shahidi drove a ball back to Williams that he could have taken at shoulder height but he got fingertips to it before the ball tumbled out. Williams created another chance in his next over, when Afghan on 124, sliced a drive to point. Kevin Kasuza should have taken a simple grab but could not hold on.Instead, Afghan went to reach 150 with a single to deep backward square and seemed set for many more. With Afghan scoring largely on the on-side and Shahidi dominant on the off-side, Zimbabwe struggled to plug the gaps. Their only other success came when Sikandar Raza trapped Afghan lbw with a delivery that pitched on middle and would have gone on to at least clip leg stump. At that point, he held Afghan was in possession of Afghanistan’s highest individual score,164.Shahidi’s 150 followed soon after and he drew level with Afghan when he sent a Williams’ full toss to long-on before overtaking his captain with a single in the same area. He and Nasir Jamal took Afghanistan into the third session and accelerated their scoring slightly as thoughts of a declaration loomed. Shahidi took Afghanistan to 500 by belting Ryan Burl through the covers and Jamal brought up his first Test fifty off 86 balls before Shahidi’s magic moment came.He reached 200 off the 443rd ball he faced, with a nudge behind square. Jamal was celebrating even as he completed the run and Shahidi joined in soon after. Though the match is being played behind closed doors, he received a standing ovation from his team-mates and the support staff. Afghan called his batsmen in immediately after, leaving Zimbabwe with 17 overs to navigate to the close of play. They survived unscathed and their opening pair put on 50 to keep the run-fest going. But, their time in the middle was not without its nerves. Kevin Kasuza survived two chances, first when he was on 1 and he pulled Afghanistan’s lone seamer Sayed Shirzad to midwicket. Amir Hamza spilled the chance and had to leave the field with an injury. Hamza returned in the next over with strapping on the middle finger of his right hand and had a convincing lbw appeal against Kasuza but Aleem Dar was not convinced.Rashid Khan was introduced in the ninth over, and was hit for four off his second ball but by his third over, he started to find the kind of turn that could cause Zimbabwe problems. If the cracks on the surface break up, facing him as the match goes on could become trickier but with the pitch playing well, there seems to still be plenty of runs to be scored.

Fewer touches than Pickford: Dyche must axe 5/10 Everton man after Brighton

Everton suffered a calamitous 3-0 defeat at home against Brighton & Hove Albion to kickstart the new season in the most disastrous way possible. The Toffees are entering their final campaign at Goodison Park, but will be hoping performances can pick up after this defeat so they can give their stadium the send-off it deserves.

Kaoru Mitoma opened the scoring for the Seagulls on the 25-minute mark, a well-worked team goal after Everton lost possession of the ball on the edge of the visitors' box. The Japan international got on the end of a good cross from Yankuba Minteh on debut to give his side the lead.

Fabian Hurzeler, managing his first competitive Brighton game, saw his side double their lead in the 56th minute thanks to a goal from Danny Welbeck. It was another assist for a summer signing, with Mats Wieffer intercepting a loose ball from the Toffees and finding Welbeck, who converged on Everton’s box and slotted home.

Simon Adingra killed the game off in the 86th minute, receiving the ball from Welbeck again and cutting inside on his left foot, finding the bottom-left corner. A VAR intervention cancelled a fourth Seagulls goal from Yasin Ayari after he was deemed offside.

Everton’s defensive stats

It was a poor defensive showing from Everton, who conceded three goals in a single game for the first time since a 6-0 defeat to Chelsea in April. Sean Dyche will no doubt be very disappointed to have put in such a frustrating defensive showing.

As per Sofascore, they conceded ten shots throughout the game, and whilst that is not too many – they had nine themselves – five of those were on target and all but one were inside the box.

Hurzeler’s side also had a far superior expected-goals tally, with the Seagulls posting an xG total of 1.56, compared to just 0.4 for the Toffees, showing the quality of chances created was better from the visitors, too.

Of course, the Toffees were not helped by the experienced Ashley Young getting sent off in the 66th minute for a professional foul at 2-0 down. However, the damage was already done, and it was a long way back for them at that stage.

It was not just a tough day at the office for Everton’s defenders, with their attackers also struggling to get involved in the game, particularly Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Calvert-Lewin’s match stats vs. Brighton

The experienced Everton forward simply could not get into the game on Saturday and incredibly had fewer touches than Toffees goalkeeper Pickford. Everton’s striker touched the ball just 20 times, compared to 50 for the England No 1.

Outside of that, the 27-year-old won just three out of seven aerial duels against the Seagulls and did not manage to get a shot off at all. It was certainly a frustrating day that was made even more disappointing after having a penalty decision overruled after Calvert-Lewin was judged not to have been fouled by Lewis Dunk.

The Everton No 9 was given a 5/10 for his performance against Brighton by LiverpoolWorld journalist Will Rooney. The journalist explained he ‘battled away in the first half’, but struggled for any service of note from his teammates and could not get into the game.

With the likes of Beto and Iliman Ndiaye options for Dyche to play up front, it remains to be seen whether Calvert-Lewin will keep his place in the side for next week’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur. One thing is for sure, he will be hoping for more service in north London if he continues to get the nod.
