West Brom closing in on signing of “excellent” £5,400-a-week international

West Brom are believed to be closing in on the signing of an "excellent" international player, according to a fresh update from reliable journalist Lewis Cox.

West Brom transfer news

The Baggies still have time to make more signings in the summer transfer window, with some good business done to date, including the additions of Torbjorn Heggem, Gianluca Frabotta and Paddy McNair.

One player who has been linked with a summer move to West Brom is Will Keane, with the experienced 31-year-old currently plying his trade at fellow Championship side Preston North End. In fact, the Baggies have reportedly tabled an offer for his services as Carlos Corberan looks to bolster his attacking options.

Barnsley midfielder Callum Styles has also been mentioned as an option for Corberan's men between now and the end of the month as he aims to make a return to the Championship. A player-plus-cash deal including Mo Faal has been mooted.

It could be that the Hungarian still arrives at The Hawthorns this summer, further strengthening West Brom in the middle of the park, even though midfielder Uros Racic has already joined on a season-long loan.

West Brom closing in on "excellent" ace

According to Cox on X, West Brom are close to completing the signing of Barnsley ace Styles, with talks thought to be at an advanced stage:

Signing Styles feels like a no-brainer for West Brom, with the 24-year-old a highly-thought-of midfielder who already has 23 caps to his name for Hungary, more than holding his own alongside Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai.

He is surely too good to be playing League One football with Barnsley, considering he is an experienced international player and at this level. Indeed, former Barnsley boss Neill Collins has said of him in the past:

"Callum's talent is undoubted and again for me, he has been excellent in pre-season. As long as I have got players like that, I will be delighted. I hope I can just help him continue to improve and become the player he has got the potential to be. He's definitely enjoyable for everyone to watch."

Granted, Styles may have to accept that he isn't guaranteed to come in and be a starter every week for West Brom considering the options that Corberan has at his disposal, but the £5,400-a-week ace would be ideal for squad depth.

Last season, the midfielder enjoyed a stint on loan at Sunderland, starting 10 league games and showing he is well-suited to the Championship and has 136 appearances to his name in the competition throughout his career. He is still a relatively young player and has further gears to find, so the Baggies could be making an impressive addition.

He could link up again with ex-teammate Devante Cole, who notched 18 times in League One for the Tykes last term.

They had their worst IPL season – finishing seventh – in 2020, and as the Chennai Super Kings look to bounce back and add to their three titles, they have received a shot in the arm in the form of Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja joining their bio-secure bubble in Mumbai this week. While Jadeja linked up on Friday, Raina had joined on Wednesday. Both of them will undergo a week-long quarantine before joining the team’s training, which takes off on Saturday. For Jadeja, the IPL will mark a return to cricket since he dislocated his left thumb while batting in the Sydney Test against Australia in early January. Jadeja underwent surgery in Sydney before heading to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru to complete his rehabilitation. The injury had ruled Jadeja out of the all-format home series against England.Earlier this week, Jadeja posted a video from the NCA, showing him holding the bat and bowling for the first time since the Australia tour. The franchise had originally expected Jadeja to join in the first week of April, but his early release from the NCA has ensured that he gets at least a week of training before the Super Kings play their first match of the season, against the Delhi Capitals in Mumbai on April 10.Related

While Jadeja would be expected to settle in quickly, the focus is bound to remain on Raina, who entered the Super Kings hotel quietly on Wednesday. This, in a way, is Raina’s re-entry to the Super Kings ranks following a controversial exit on the eve of the 2020 IPL.The Super Kings tweeted a picture of Raina in his hotel room with a title saying: “Vandhutennu Sollu! From namma Chinna Thala!” That translates to: “Tell them, I have come back”, a line from , the popular Tamil film. While there were questions about Raina’s future with the franchise following stern comments from franchise owner N Srinivasan after the developments last season, Raina was retained ahead of the 2021 auction. Raina, who retired from international cricket along with MS Dhoni on August 15 last year, has kept himself fit by turning out for Uttar Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.Raina’s return restores the balance in the batting department for the Super Kings, who struggled to find momentum until the latter stages of the league phase in 2020 IPL. Dhoni & Co to begin training at Brabourne
It was also a particularly bad season for Dhoni the batsman, as he struggled to get into any sort of rhythm, scoring just 200 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 116. As he signed the yellow No. 7 jersey for players for rival teams, speculation grew whether he would be retiring after the season.”Definitely not,” he said after the Super Kings’ final match last season, to put an end to the speculation.Dhoni reached Chennai to be part of the preliminary training camp, which comprised a small group of mainly uncapped Indian domestic players. That camp was also conducted in a bio-secure environment with everyone involved adhering by the mandatory quarantine protocols set by the BCCI.Kasi Viswanathan, the Super Kings’ chief executive officer, told ESPNcricinfo that the players and coaching staff who were part of that bubble wouldn’t need to undergo the seven-day quarantine in Mumbai. “Our first day of practice will be tomorrow (Saturday),” Viswanathan confirmed, revealing that the first two training sessions would be at Brabourne Stadium.Ngidi to arrive on April 5
Head coach Stephen Fleming and assistant coach Michael Hussey are among the overseas members of the set-up to have reached Mumbai already.Viswanathan confirmed that Faf du Plessis would arrive on March 26, and it is understood that Lungi Ngidi would be released from the ODI squad – along with other IPL-bound players – for the series against Pakistan on April 4, the day of the second of three games. The Super Kings are one of the four teams – along with the Capitals, the Punjab Kings and the Rajasthan Royals – who will play the initial part of the league phase in Mumbai.

Rahul, Gayle drag Punjab Kings to victory after bowlers strangle Mumbai Indians

Rohit Sharma’s half-century, Rahul Chahar’s daunting spell in vain for Mumbai

Andrew Miller23-Apr-20213:27

Agarkar: Mumbai were a bit overcautious in their approach

Punjab Kings 132 for 1 (Rahul 60*, Gayle 43*) beat Mumbai Indians 131 for 6 (Sharma 63, Yadav 33, Shami 2-21, Bishnoi 2-21) by nine wicketsOnly the Punjab Kings could make a comprehensive nine-wicket victory look like an existential crisis. But on another stodgy, spin-friendly deck at Chepauk, they were made to battle for every run of a sub-par target of 132, as the champions, Mumbai Indians, turned to the spin contingent of their hugely versatile attack to take an apparent stroll deep into the death overs. The chase was eventually sealed with 14 balls to spare, thanks to a disciplined stand of 79 from 62 balls between KL Rahul and Chris Gayle, who swallowed their pride and soaked up the dot balls, in the knowledge that the asking rate was never likely to get out of hand in the circumstances.Nevertheless, as the legspinner Rahul Chahar once again led the line in a daunting spell of 4-0-19-1, he was ably assisted by the offbreaks of Jayant Yadav (4-0-20-0), whose dispatching by Gayle for a vast six over long-on in the 15th over inadvertently reawakened Mumbai’s interest. The drier replacement ball began to bite the dry surface with renewed venom, and both batsmen had some exceptionally dicey moments at the denouement – not least Rahul, who brought up a run-a-ball fifty with a leading edge into no-man’s land at square leg.Inevitably, it was left to the Universe Boss to put the contest beyond doubt, as he swivelled into a pull for six off Trent Boult’s first ball of his comeback over. Rahul joined the pile-on with a swipe over long-on, before a fast edge through third man sealed Punjab’s first victory since their opening match of the tournament.Fifth bowler first for Kings
It was topsy-turvy from the outset from the the Kings, and it turned Mumbai’s intentions inside-out.Moises Henriques had bowled a solitary over in this tournament to date, and that may have been out of desperation after a flying start to the Sunrisers’ run-chase in last week’s nine-wicket defeat. But therein lay the beginnings of a cunning plan, as Henriques – with three cheap overs – and Deepak Hooda, equally unaccustomed to being called upon so early in an innings, were charged with cramping Mumbai’s style in the powerplay. The pair, and latterly Mohammad Shami, were aided and abetted by a strangely unalert Rohit Sharma, whose intent appeared to have been anaesthetised on a surface with which Mumbai have become suspiciously familiar in the course of their first four matches.Sharma might have been run out off the second ball of the game after jogging for his first run, and his surfeit of caution was summed up when he even patted a shin-high full-toss from Henriques to long-on for another single – though he made amends one over later for Mumbai’s first boundary of the night.Quinton de Kock never got going either, as Hooda’s darting offbreaks lured him into a wafty drive to mid-on, and even the habitually unfettered Ishan Kishan was unable to escape first gear, as Mumbai limped to 21 for 1 in the first six overs, their joint-second-lowest powerplay total in IPL history. In the process, Punjab had burgled five overs from their least-vaunted bowlers, and as if to celebrate, Ravi Bishnoi – newly called up as a legspinning replacement for M Ashwin – did for a becalmed Kishan with a big-spinning googly in his opening over.Chris Gayle and KL Rahul put on 79 together off 62 balls•BCCI/IPL

Rohit provides ballast but no fireworks
Sharma has never been afraid to take his time to build an innings. A brace of steered boundaries from Fabian Allen’s first two balls lifted his strike-rate into credit, and at 25 from 22 balls in the eighth over, he was now ready to go deep. In Allen’s next over, Sharma pumped him over the leg side for Mumbai’s first six, and Hooda was similarly dispatched when he returned for a ten-run third over in the 12th. With Suryakumar Yadav picking up on the change of tempo too, Sharma rushed to his fifty from 40 balls with a front-foot steer through backward point off Bishnoi. But the Kings’ early stranglehold was never entirely loosened, even as Suryakumar began to crank up the style with a scoop over backward square off Bishnoi and a whippy pick-up through long-on off Shami. On 33, though, he top-edged a switch-hit off Bishnoi to Gayle at short fine leg. With Kieron Pollard still on 0 and focussed merely on seeing off the final balls of his zippy tight-lined spell, Bishnoi trimmed his bails with the googly as Rahul too failed to pick the variation. One over later, the Kings had the big one. Sharma rocked into a pull to deep midwicket as Shami returned to the attack, and had to go for 63 from 52 balls. It was Mumbai’s highest individual score of the campaign to date, and a clear indication that run-making on this surface is far from straightforward.Fast start, slow finish
Mumbai launched their defence with a waspish first over from Boult that conceded just a single, but Krunal Pandya’s deployment in the powerplay was less of a roaring success. A brace of fours for Rahul gave way to a glorious pulled six over extra cover from Mayank Agarwal, to provide a kick-start that would prove match-defining.But Chahar, with analyses of 4 for 27 and 3 for 19 already in this tournament, is in some fine form right now. He nearly struck with his third ball as Rahul pushed airily but just out of the bowler’s reach, a let-off that persuaded the captain to play the long game with his spitting, bouncy legbreaks. On 25, however, Agarwal allowed himself to be hypnotised by Chahar’s line and loop, as he flapped into a half-formed drive over long-on, and was already rehearsing the sweep he should have played as Suryakumar swallowed the chance.Without missing a beat, Sharma called the offspin of Jayant into the attack, who confirmed the rising tension with a brace of single-run overs, as Gayle stretched onto the front foot to acquaint his bat with the middle of the ball. And as he and Rahul traded in singles in Chahar’s third over, Punjab were visibly torn as to stick or twist with the required rate stretching towards 7.5.Gayle briefly lost patience as Chahar twirled into his final over, so nearly losing his off stump to an ill-conceived cut. However, a shovelled pull past fine leg was a reminder that even the best bowlers would lapse occasionally. The same trick got Gayle’s innings properly up and running in Jayant’s next over, as he risked lbw to nick another boundary behind square. At that moment, Jayant finally strayed into Gayle’s arc for more familiar thump through wide long-on, but those were the last runs he would concede as the replacement ball spat viciously past his edge for the remainder of the over. Krunal found similar assistance on his return to the attack, but ultimately Mumbai were left to rue a batting performance that had been fractionally too deferential to the conditions. But at least they are off to pastures new in Delhi next week. Two wins from five in Chennai is not a disaster, but it’s left the champions playing catch-up.

Deal close: £1m Everton player agrees to join Salford City on deadline day

An Everton attacker is now close to leaving the club in a deadline day exit, according to a fresh update regarding a move to another English club.

Everton transfer news

After a bleak start to the Premier League season for the Blues, supporters will be hoping to have something to shout about at the end of the summer transfer window.

It has been a solid summer in the market for Everton with the likes of Jake O'Brien, Iliman Ndiaye and Jesper Lindstrom among those who have come in, but given the nature of their respective 3-0 and 4-0 defeats to Brighton and Tottenham, further reinforcements are required.

Time is clearly running out for Sean Dyche in that respect, but one report has claimed that the Blues have been given the opportunity to complete the signing of Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill for a cut-price amount. Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham are also seen as potential suitors, however, and the Englishman could be snapped up for just £5m.

Everton are also reportedly in negotiations to sign Rennes ace Lorenz Assignon, with the 24-year-old right-back someone who could add much-needed youth to a key area of the pitch where Ashley Young and Seamus Coleman are ageing figures. Now, a Goodison exit update has dropped regarding one figure, but it isn't Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Everton attacker closing in on exit

According to Football Insider, Everton striker Francis Okoronkwo has agreed to join Salford City on loan for the entirety of the 2024/25 season, being given the green light to move on. The 19-year-old originally moved to Goodison Park from Sunderland in a £1m move back in 2021, but it looks as though a temporary move away this summer has been decided to be best for his development.

Everton manager Sean Dyche.

This makes complete sense for Okoronkwo more than anything, considering the teenager is unlikely to be deemed an important part of Dyche's plans this season, given his lack of experience. The Englishman is yet to make an appearance for Everton at senior level, despite joining the club three years ago, instead being limited to playing time for the Under-23s and Under-18s, making a combined 65 outings.

Okoronkwo has done well in that time, though, scoring 20 goals and registering eight assists, and he could grow further as a player at League Two side Salford, testing himself up against older players before returning to Goodison a better footballer than before.

Whether he has a long-term future at Everton remains to be seen, but now is the time for him to excel away from Merseyside and show that he can handle a different challenge.

Everton in talks to let a player who earns more than Branthwaite leave

The Toffees could part ways with the central defender before the deadline tonight.

ByDan Emery Aug 30, 2024

Assuming the move goes through, how Okoronkwo fares between now and the end of the season could determine whether the Blues feel he is worth persevering with or not. For that reason, the pressure on him to show that he is now capable of making the jump from youth to senior football for an extended period.

Trent Boult hopes to 'create a bit of history' in World Test Championship final

Trent Boult is eyeing the chance to “create a bit of history” as he prepares to travel to England to join his team-mates ahead of the World Test Championship final against India later this month.Boult opted to return to New Zealand after the IPL was suspended to spend some time with his family instead of traveling to the UK via the Maldives, even though it meant a further two weeks in managed isolation and the likelihood of missing both Tests against England. Since completing that period, he has been preparing at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui ahead of flying to the UK on Thursday.”The way the group has travelled and performed around New Zealand and the world, the boys are in a great place to hopefully create a bit of history,” he said.Related

“I’ve taken a while to understand the process with qualifying, how everything works with the points, still think no one knows how that actually works, but to get into that final the excitement is ramping up now. Once I step foot in the UK, get that chance to smell the English fresh air and see the ball move around a little bit I’ll definitely be excited.”Boult, who has 281 Test wickets at 28.02, has been getting used to the Dukes ball that will be used for the WTC final in Southampton and is excited about what it could offer him. His previous four Tests in England have brought him 21 wickets at 23.14.”I haven’t had too much experience with it, played a handful of Tests over in England. It reacts a lot differently, then you have to weigh in all these different venues,” he said. “I’m sure the boys are very excited to get it in their hands and see it move around, hopefully we can entertain you a little bit over the next wee while.”New Zealand coach Gary Stead said on Monday that Boult was unlikely to feature in the second Test against England at Edgbaston before the WTC final, although Boult himself suggested he had not completely ruled out hope of making an appearance. “Hopefully I can get over there, get settled in and be part of that second Test as well,” he said. After the final, there is a gap in New Zealand’s schedule and Boult will face another two weeks in a hotel on his return home. “If you can keep busy and not let yourself too deep in your thoughts and whine about things then you find a way to get through,” he said. “[We have] been very lucky to be still be working in this current climate so it’s the price you have to play.”He also has his eye on resuming his IPL stint with the Mumbai Indians if the tournament restarts as planned in the UAE in late September. “Looks like it’s moving forward to the UAE where it ran very nicely last year. So if I get the chance I’ll be looking forward to finishing that campaign off nicely,” he added.

24 y/o Sunderland ace also unavailable for selection alongside Abdullahi

Another Sunderland player is set to miss his side’s Championship clash with Plymouth Argyle this weekend, according to manager Regis Le Bris.

Sunderland suffer Abdullahi injury blow

The Black Cats are looking to continue their pre-international break form on Saturday afternoon, as they make the trip to lowly Plymouth. Another win would make it five victories in a row for Le Bris’ side, which would further suggest that they are genuine promotion contenders this season.

Ahead of Sunderland’s long trip to the south west, they have been dealt a blow with the news that summer signing Ahmed Abdullahi will be out for the foreseeable future, potentially even missing as much as three months of action.

Le Bris himself has given an update on the situation, saying: “Ahmed is different because he will have surgery. He will probably have ten to 12 weeks off the pitch. It wasn’t so clear when we signed him. We need an expert to understand exactly what the problem was. Now, we know. The diagnosis is clear and it will be solved after this surgery.”

Sunderland will know the importance of keeping players fit throughout the season, with fitness woes having the potential to derail any campaign, and another individual is now also confirmed to be unavailable for the Plymouth game this weekend.

Sunderland also without Salis Abdul Samed vs Plymouth

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Thursday [via Sunderland AFC News], Le Bris said that new loan signing Salis Abdul Samed also won’t be available for selection for another week or 10 days, despite returning to training. “Salis is now training in the first part of the sessions, and he will be available for selection in eight or ten days.”

It makes sense for Le Bris not to rush Samed into the team too quickly, as he searches for full fitness in training, but it’s still a shame not to have him in contention to feature this weekend, even if it was from the substitutes’ bench.

The 24-year-old has the potential to be an important signing for Sunderland, coming in on a season-long loan deal from Lens, looking to give them an extra spark in midfield. He is a 19-cap Ghana international, which immediately stands out when assessing his pedigree, and he has also made 91 appearances in Ligue 1, showing that he can perform in one of Europe’s big five leagues, while Ghana manager Otto Addo has said of him:

“The way Abdul Salis was running and how he controlled the game was really, really impressive. But all the others did well too. To hold them with ten-men in their half and pin them was a massive thing. We had good possessions; we helped and supported each other in the right timing, especially Abdul Salis.”

Sunderland could soon sell “wonderful” ace for more than Jack Clarke

Sunderland could soon see this star go for millions.

Hopefully, Samed’s debut won’t be too far away, perhaps coming at home to Middlesbrough next weekend (Saturday, 12.30pm), should he show enough progress in training in the coming days.
