Rangers hit gold on "monster" Gerrard signing who was sold for 9900% profit

Glasgow Rangers manager Philippe Clement will be hoping the signings he made during the summer transfer window at Ibrox can allow the club to generate substantial profits in the future.

Indeed, Rangers are looking to establish an effective player trading system which will see young talent signed, developed and then sold on for lavish fees.

Phillipe Clement

This could fund future signings which may take the Glasgow club back to the summit of Scottish football.

While the Ibrox outfit have sold plenty of players over the last few years, only a few have generated significant profit for the club. One of the most notable examples is Glen Kamara.

How much Glen Kamara cost Rangers

During Steven Gerrard’s debut season in charge of Rangers, he knew that a strong midfield would give his side the perfect chance to end Celtic’s dominance.

glen-kamara-transfer-gossip-leeds-united-farke-ao-tanaka-dusseldorf

This led to him agreeing a pre-contract move for Kamara, who was shining for Dundee at the time. Instead of waiting until the summer, however, Gerrard paid just £50k in order for the Finnish midfielder to link up early with the Gers.

It turned into one of the finest pieces of transfer business conducted by the club in recent years. Kamara went on to make nearly 200 appearances for the Light Blues, winning the Premiership and Scottish Cup, while also helping the Glaswegian outfit reach the Europa League final in 2022.

Gerrard even hailed him as a “monster” in 2019 upon his arrival, and it was clear the club would make a stunning profit on him in the future.

Last summer, Michael Beale sold the 28-year-old, hitting the jackpot on the player in the process…

Glen Kamara's transfer value in 2024

It soon became clear that the midfielder wasn’t going to be in Beale’s future plans as the summer transfer window rolled around last year.

Former Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara.

It took a few months, but eventually, he was sold to Leeds United, who paid a fee in the region of £5m to bring the player down to the English Championship, as the club sought to bolster their squad ahead of a promotion charge.

This meant the Ibrox side had sold Kamara for 9900% more than what they paid for just four and a half years earlier, a truly incredible return on their initial investment.

The 6-foot star played a solitary season for the Yorkshire side, making 42 appearances in all competitions, yet he couldn’t lead them back into the Premier League.

This summer, he was on the move again, joining French side Stade Rennais for a fee believed to be £8.4m, meaning Leeds have even made a profit on the player.

Clement will be hoping that his time in charge of the Light Blues will allow him to sign young talent cheaply, before moving them on for transfer fees in this region.

Celtic have done this expertly in recent years. Hopefully, the Belgian has taken plenty of notice.

Devon Conway and Will Young make it New Zealand's day

Both score 80-somethings to chip away at lead but Lawrence keeps England in it with last-ball strike

New Zealand boasted an embarrassment of riches for a second day running as Devon Conway and Will Young frustrated England’s bowlers and moved to within 74 runs of England’s first-innings total with seven wickets in hand at Edgbaston.Conway, who cemented his place in the side with 200 on debut in the series opener at Lord’s, produced another valuable, though not chance-less, innings of 80. And, while he would have been disappointed not to press on to triple figures again, a gutsy 82 from Young – in the side as a replacement for injured captain Kane Williamson – mitigated the damage.Stuart Broad bowled superbly for his 2 for 22 from 15 overs, including six maidens, but he was the only England bowler to reap any reward for his considerable efforts – until Young’s dismissal by part-time off-spinner Dan Lawrence on the last ball of the day.England had resumed on 258 for 7 with Lawrence on 67 and Mark Wood 16. Wood provided serious entertainment as he pushed his score up to 41. He hit Trent Boult for three fours in six balls across two overs followed by back-to-back boundaries off Matt Henry as he punished New Zealand’s persistence with short-pitched bowling.Wood eventually fell, bowled by a Henry outswinger which found an inside edge onto the stumps.Lawrence remained not out 81 to share top-scoring honours for England with Rory Burns, while Boult polished off Broad and James Anderson to end as New Zealand’s leading wicket-taker with 4 for 85.When Broad had Tom Latham, New Zealand’s stand-in captain, out lbw in the sixth over of the innings, the visitors were 15 for 2.Mark Wood and Dan Lawrence added vital runs for England•PA Photos/Getty Images

Young ground out eight runs from 45 balls to begin with before settling into his stride, unfurling a beautiful on-drive to the rope off Olly Stone and then lacing another past third slip. In Stone’s next over, Young jabbed another four through point, his feet leaving the ground as he latched onto a short ball.Having survived on seven when Joe Root juggled and dropped a standard-looking slips catch off Stone’s bowling, Young brought up his maiden Test fifty with a single off Anderson’s late-moving inswinger.Conway had earlier done well to make it back to his crease when Latham struck a Broad delivery straight back down the pitch and the bowler, following through, managed to get his fingers to it before it crashed into the stumps at the non-striker’s end. Conway, who was advancing, tracked the ball like a hawk and managed to turn and stretch his bat back to safety. That was positively skilful, whereas his next nervous moment – on 22 – fell more in the lap of fortune. Having edged Broad towards Zak Crawley at third slip, the soft signal given on the field was not-out, suggesting the ball had touched the ground first. Broad was incensed but, upon review, there was enough doubt for the decision to stand – and spark debate over the existence of the soft signal.Conway and Young put on 122 runs together before Conway holed out to Crawley at deep backward square leg, giving Broad his second wicket, having conceded just 18 runs to that point midway through his 12th over. Conway’s scores of 200, 23 and 80 meant he had scored more runs in his first three Test innings than any other New Zealand batter.Broad gave Ross Taylor a thorough examination, beating the bat on numerous occasions while Anderson provided excellent support from the other end. It was Anderson who had Taylor given out lbw shortly after Broad had wrapped up his spell but the decision was overturned on review, which showed the ball was missing leg stump by a distance.Taylor managed to grit his way towards a half-century and was 46 not out at stumps when part-time off-spinner Lawrence finally broke through in the last over of the day. Lawrence ended Young’s knock with his ninth ball, finding an inside edge onto the pad, which Ollie Pope swallowed diving forward at short leg.Young was playing just his third Test – he earned both his previous caps in the home series against West Indies in December – and had scored two centuries in three innings for Durham in the County Championship in the lead-up to this match, earning his place among six changes to the New Zealand side which drew at Lord’s. Based on his performance at Edgbaston, he gave selectors plenty to think about going forward.

He’s now worth £4m: Rangers must regret letting Ibrox star leave for £0

Over the years, Glasgow Rangers have made some questionable transfer decisions which have impacted things on the pitch.

The Ibrox side’s transfer activity ever since Steven Gerrard departed in 2021 has unearthed few gems, seeing the club spend lavish sums of money on players who either can’t hack it in Scotland or who are far too injury-prone.

£6m was spent on signing Brazilian forward Danilo, yet a knee injury sustained last year has seen the player fail to live up to this fee. He will get a chance once fit, but if the same issues persist, it will be a colossal waste of resources.

Danilo

Sam Lammers is another one who cost a decent sum, yet failed to repay the fee on the field, scoring just twice for the Light Blues in 31 appearances before being shipped off to FC Twente this summer.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Gers have moved on several players in recent years far too soon, especially when they may still have contributed.

One notable example is Alfredo Morelos, who departed the club in 2023 for nothing after letting his contract run down. The Colombian scored over 100 goals during his six-year stint in Scotland. While he was a shadow of his former self during his final season, he still offered glimpses of his immense talent.

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos.

That summer, another first-team star left the club too, as Ryan Kent failed to renew his contract at Ibrox as well.

Michael Beale was keen on ushering in a new era at the Gers, but losing two players who had contributed plenty to the club’s success over the previous few years was seen as a big gamble. One that didn’t pay off.

Ryan Kent’s statistics at Rangers

The youngster first arrived in Glasgow during the summer of 2018 as Gerrard used his Liverpool connections to bring the winger to the club on a season-long loan deal.

During that spell, Kent registered 15 goal contributions – six goals and nine assists – in all competitions for the Light Blues. Despite the club failing to win a trophy, it was clear progress was being made on the pitch, as Gerrard was building a team that would soon take back the Premiership title from Celtic.

In order to do this, however, he would need to sign hungry players who would want to establish themselves in this project. Kent was one who was earmarked to make a permanent move to Ibrox that summer, but the saga rolled on all the way until deadline day.

Before the end of the window, it was announced that the wide player had moved north for a fee in the region of £7.5m, a staggering sum for the winger, despite shining on loan.

Again, the Gers finished trophyless during the 2019/20 campaign, but it was the following season in which Kent finally lived up to this lavish fee, as the Glasgow side won their first league title in a decade.

The former Liverpool man played over 50 matches that term, scoring 13 goals while chipping in with 14 assists. Furthermore, he ranked second in the squad for shots per game (2.3) in the top flight, along with ranking third for big chances created (nine), third for key passes per game (1.8) and second for successful dribbles per game (1.9), underlining how vital he was going forward.

This season proved to be Kent’s best at Rangers, as the following two years saw his gradual decline into someone who clearly looked like he no longer wanted to play for the club.

Former Rangers winger Ryan Kent.

During his final two seasons, he managed to score just six times, a poor return for someone of his quality. It was perhaps no surprise to see him leave in 2023 following a muted campaign.

What Ryan Kent has done since leaving Rangers

During his time in Glasgow, teammate Leon Balogun dubbed the winger as a “wizard” during his time with the club, but since leaving, he has failed to nail down regular game time for Fenerbahçe and hasn’t exactly been capable of weaving much magic.

He joined the Turkish side a few weeks after saying goodbye to Ibrox last summer, but the move didn’t take long to turn sour. Across the entirety of last season, Kent managed to make just 18 appearances in all competitions, finding the back of the net only once.

It wasn’t exactly the form he had envisioned upon joining the Turkish club, especially considering it looked like he needed a change and was clearly coming into the peak years of his career.

José Mourinho arrived in the summer to take charge of the club, who missed out on winning their first league title in nine years last term, but it soon became apparent that Kent wasn’t going to be in his plans.

The former Liverpool starlet has played just 68 minutes so far, and it looks like he could be on the lookout for a new club sooner rather than later.

Ryan Kent’s market value in 2024

Despite struggling in Turkey, the winger is currently valued at £4m by Football Transfers, indicating that he will make the club a profit should they decide to sell in January.

Following his struggles, might the Ibrox side rue letting him leave so easily? Considering how limited Philippe Clement’s options are out wide at the current moment in time, quite possibly.

rangers-ryan-kent-champions-league-leeds-transfer

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, of course. Even if he did extend his deal, there was no guarantee that the winger would have returned to the form he showcased during the league title-winning campaign.

The move clearly benefited both parties at the time, but having a fit and enthusiastic Kent in the starting XI is something Clement would clearly love to have at his disposal, no doubt about that.

Rangers striker was "better" than Morelos, then he got sold 6 months later

The Light Blues may have thought they hit the jackpot after his start to life at Ibrox.

+ Destaque do sub-20, Juninho iniciará temporada 2022 com o time principal do Botafogo

Ravindra Jadeja made his second fifty of the game and Cheteshwar Pujara batted as an opener on the final day’s play, which ended early after the teams agreed to call off the final hour. The Indians bowled 15.5 overs without taking a wicket after declaring just before tea.The day began with Mayank Agarwal opening alongside Pujara, with the Indians 91 ahead. The openers added 87 together in a breezy partnership during which the County Select XI rarely tested them; the bowling was generally on the shorter side and both batters brought out some of their signature strokes. Agarwal was open to uppercuts and ramps over slips, while Pujara hit a string of back-foot punches through the covers in his usual measured manner. In the opening hour, and also by the end of the stand, they scored at more than four an over against bland seam bowling.Offspinner Jack Carson did the bulk of the bowling – 22 overs – and took two wickets. Agarwal was out caught by Washington Sundar while trying to get to his fifty by lofting Carson over his head. Sundar was the lone Indian for the fielding side, with Avesh Khan ruled out through injury.Pujara then dabbed one straight to backward short leg trying to keep an offbreak down, before Hanuma Vihari and Jadeja put on 84 for the third wicket. Vihari was unbeaten on 43 and a promoted Shardul Thakur made 6 off ten balls before the declaration. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul did not bat.All four frontline batters on the day capped off decent returns for the match, with at least starts and time in the middle in both innings. Jadeja aggregated the highest runs for the Indians in the game. All of the Indians’ fast bowlers got a bowl in the second innings but were conservative with their efforts as a long series awaits. Jasprit Bumrah and Thakur took the new ball, and Mohammed Siraj and Umesh Yadav bowled a few overs between them in a passage where openers Jake Libby and first-innings centurion Haseeb Hameed were largely untroubled.
