Brendon McCullum expected to be named as England Test coach

The former New Zealand batter has emerged as the frontrunner following the first tranche of interviews

Brendon McCullum has emerged as the frontrunner for the vacant role as England’s Test coach following two days of interviews at Lord’s, and may be unveiled in the role this week.McCullum, who is in his third season as Kolkata Knight Riders’ coach at the IPL, has never coached a first-class game and was widely expected to be a candidate for the white-ball job, with the ECB splitting the main coaching roles down format lines due to England’s jam-packed schedule and the growing divergence between their sides. However, several British newspapers reported on Tuesday night that McCullum is now in line for the Test job following the first tranche of interviews at the start of this week. It is possible that an appointment will be ratified before the end of the week, with England’s first Test of the summer against New Zealand – McCullum’s home country – on June 2.McCullum’s coaching experience has come exclusively in the limited-overs game but as a captain, he was a key part of the leadership group that brought about New Zealand’s revival as a Test side along with coach Mike Hesson from 2012 to 2016.Rob Key, the ECB’s new managing director of men’s cricket, has led the interview process and revealed during his first press conference at Lord’s that he had sought opinions on the Test side from Eoin Morgan, McCullum’s close friend and Knight Riders’ captain last year during their run to the final.”I’ve spoken to Eoin about red-ball cricket as well,” Key said. “I asked his opinion. You want good people with good brains around you to work stuff out, so Eoin Morgan is someone I would speak to about so many different things.”McCullum’s attacking style would chime with how both Key and Ben Stokes, England’s new Test captain, play the game. After scoring 145 off 79 balls in his final Test against Australia, McCullum said he wanted to be remembered “as a good team man… a guy who played for the right reasons and who, if in doubt, was prepared to take the positive option”.Key has also previously confirmed that he would be willing to let an England head coach work in the IPL if necessary, saying: “I would much rather have the best person for 10 months of the year than someone not as good for 12.”Whether such logic applies to a Test coach as well as a white-ball coach remains to be seen, while McCullum’s job at Knight Riders may come under scrutiny after a poor season to date in which they seem highly likely to miss out on the playoffs.Other leading candidates for the Test role are understood to include Gary Kirsten, Simon Katich and Graham Ford while Paul Collingwood is among the applicants for the white-ball job.

Aston Villa now plotting move to sign "aggressive" £46m forward for Emery

As Aston Villa look to bridge the gap between themselves and the Premier League’s top four once again, they’ve reportedly set their sights on signing another attacking reinforcement for Unai Emery.

Aston Villa transfer news

The Villans find themselves sat as low as ninth in the Premier League table after struggling for consistency in the first half of the season, as summed up by following their recent victory over Manchester City with a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United.

It wasn’t a game centred around Villa’s struggles, however. Instead, Jhon Duran’s controversial red card stole the headlines and ignited Emery’s outrage.

Now set to be without Duran for the next three games after their appeal proved to be unsuccessful, Villa must hope that Ollie Watkins is back to full fitness and firing on all cylinders as they welcome Brighton & Hove Albion in the coming days.

Aston Villa are eyeing up a move for a La Liga midfielder…

ByRoss Kilvington Dec 28, 2024

Meanwhile, Duran’s dismissal has seemingly sparked some interesting transfer rumours as 2025 arrives. According to CaughtOffside, Aston Villa are now plotting a move to sign Mateo Retegui from Atalanta next year in a move that would have to meet the Italian club’s valuation of at least €55m (£46m) next year.

The forward is enjoying an excellent season and has already been watched by Aston Villa’s scouts as a result. Taking Atalanta to the top of Serie A, Retegui could yet find himself on his way to the Premier League if he is able to steer the Bergamo outfit to a historic title triumph.

With Retegui, Watkins and Duran to call on, it wouldn’t be absurd to suggest that Aston Villa would have one of the strongest groups of strikers in the Premier League.

"Aggressive" Retegui could complete Aston Villa frontline

Whilst Duran and Watkins are already giving Emery quite the headache, the arrival of another star striker could leave the Spaniard with no choice but to change to a formation which accommodates a strike partnership.

Picking between Watkins and Duran has already been impossible enough, but with Villa looking like entering the new year in mid-table, now is the time for Emery to experiment and fit both players into his strongest side.

Meanwhile, if the former Arsenal manager does make that change, signing Retegui would also be a wise move. Having three strikers capable of reaching double figures for goals and forming a strike partnership between those options would undoubtedly go a long way towards bridging the gap on the Champions League places.

Described as “aggressive” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Retegui has had no trouble in keeping up and even outscoring both Duran and Watkins so far this season in what could be a preview of what is to come at Villa Park in 2025.

Chelsea get scathing reply from Crystal Palace to opening Marc Guehi bid

Chelsea have been handed a damning response to their first January offer for Crystal Palace stalwart Marc Guehi, with Enzo Maresca’s side believed to be seriously keen on re-signing the England international before February 3.

Chelsea register interest in January deal for Marc Guehi

Injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile have intensified the need for another world-class centre-back, and one who could be a fixture in Maresca’s backline for years to come.

Chelsea have been scouring the market for another central defender for months, even before Fofana and Badiashile were confined to the treatment table, and it is believed bringing one in is their top transfer priority for the winter (Simon Phillips).

There are believed to be a few interesting names on their shortlist, from both abroad and in the Premier League.

Benfica’s Antonio Silva and Tomas Araujo are under consideration at Stamford Bridge, as are Bournemouth’s Illia Zabarnyi and Dean Huijsen (Simon Phillips), with other reports suggesting that Chelsea are also monitoring Barcelona’s Jules Koundé and Ronald Araujo.

However, as of now, it is Guehi who appears to be grabbing all the headlines as a top centre-back target. The 24-year-old’s stellar 2024 saw him perform impressively at the Euros with England, filling in for the injured Harry Maguire to great effect, and he stood out as one of Palace’s star players at club level.

Eagles chairman Steve Parish rejected a plethora of summer bids from Newcastle United to keep hold of their influential defender, and Guehi has rewarded Palace with an array of accomplished performances this campaign.

The former Chelsea man has started 19 out of 20 league games for Palace this season as a mainstay of Oliver Glasner’s back three, prompting serious interest from his old club.

Now, according to a report from The Sun, that interest has materialised into a formal winter bid.

Chelsea receive reply to opening Marc Guehi bid

As per the newspaper on their live blog [January 7, 03:00], Chelsea have tabled a “cheeky” opening January bid for Guehi, but Palace are far from impressed with their first approach.

The Three Lions ace is valued at around £55 million, with a Selhurst Park source telling The Sun that Chelsea’s offer is far below his asking price and deemed “silly”. As a result, Palace are set to snub their latest advances.

“Their offer was a long way off being a fair price,” said the source. “It was silly really, and they need to offer more to even have a hope of getting a deal done.”

Guehi has just 18 months left on his contract, perhaps explaining Chelsea’s decision to make a lower financial proposal than expected, but the player’s quality and pedigree highlights why Parish is still demanding a hefty sum to sell mid-season.

“When he plays for England he probably goes up another level as well,” said ex-interim England boss Lee Carsley.

“I still think there is a lot more to come from Marc. Physically, he’s fast and he’s aggressive. On the ball, he is excellent as well so he just needs to keep improving.”

A white-ball series with India headlines West Indies’ cricket calendar over the next three months, with New Zealand and Bangladesh also scheduled to visit.According to a CWI statement on Wednesday, India’s white-ball tour will comprise three ODIs and five T20Is spread across four venues, including one in the United States. All three ODIs will be played at Queen’s Park Oval, in Trinidad on July 22, 24 and 27. The second and third T20Is will be staged at Warner Park, in St Kitts before the teams head off to Lauderhill, in Florida for the last two matches, on August 6 and 7.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“The upcoming summer is expected to feature 30 days of top-quality entertainment for our fans as we look ahead to hosting three teams of differing styles in all three formats, which will sure to whet the appetite,” Johnny Grave, CEO of CWI, said.”This is the busiest year of cricket ever in the West Indies. In January, we hosted Ireland and England in white-ball formats, and also successfully staged the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2022, which featured 16 teams traversing the region. We also witnessed the Apex Test Series, against England, which West Indies won in great style and with real fight.”West Indies are currently in Netherlands playing a three-match ODI series and will travel to Pakistan for three ODIs. They will then host Bangladesh in a two-Test series between June 16 to 28, with both matches part of the World Test Championship. The two Tests will be followed by a three-match T20I series, with the first two games being held at the refurbished Windsor Park, in Dominica, for the first time since the venue was damaged by Hurricane Maria in 2017. The Bangladesh tour will conclude with a three-game ODI series, with Guyana staging all three matches.New Zealand’s tour to the West Indies, which was rescheduled from 2020 due to Covid-19, will comprise of three T20Is and three ODIs, from August 10 to 21. While the three T20Is will be played in Jamaica, from August 10 to 14, Kensington Oval, in Barbados, will host the three ODIs on August 17, 19 and 21.”We know our supporters will be delighted with the news that the matches are being played all across the region as well as those living in the USA will be able to see their favourite players in action,” Grave said.”We are mindful that Covid-19 is still present, and we again want to thank the various governments and other stakeholders who have worked with us to ensure the matches will be played in a safe environment.”All nine ODIs will be part of the Super League, which determines the chances of a team gaining automatic qualification to the World Cup in 2023. Only the top seven teams at the end of the season, and hosts India, will get direct entry. The remaining five teams will have to play in a qualifying tournament along with five associate teams. The top two from the qualifying tournament will then progress to the World Cup. West Indies are currently No. 10 on the Super League points table.

Better than Phillips: 61-touch Ipswich ace has now made himself undroppable

Ipswich Town confidently brushed Bristol Rovers aside 3-0 in the FA Cup on Sunday courtesy of a first-half demolition job.

All three of the Tractor Boys’ goals came in that eventful opening 45 minutes, with the second half an equal walk in the park from the perspective of Kieran McKenna’s men, who gave up only three shots on their mainly untested goal across the straightforward 90 minutes.

Kalvin Phillips would have been overjoyed to score his team’s opener after a turbulent loan stay to date, with the number eight sticking out all match long against his side’s lowly opponents.

Phillips' performance in numbers vs Bristol Rovers

Making only his second start for the Suffolk side since the back-end of November, the former Leeds United midfielder would have been relieved that his confidence was given a necessary boost against the League One outfit.

Indeed, even if it is against a team two leagues below Ipswich, there’s still plenty the 29-year-old can gain from his performance, away from just his strike being thumped home past a helpless Joshua Griffiths in the Gas goal.

Glancing at his individual numbers, the Ipswich captain for the day dictated play from the middle with 88 touches and 64 accurate passes tallied up, on top of making three interceptions when the away side threatened on occasion.

Moreover, the Tractor Boys loanee also carved out one big chance in an attempt to build on his first-half strike, with the 5 foot 10 star lasting the full 90 minutes to now give McKenna a conundrum on who he starts centrally moving forward in the bread and butter of the Premier League.

Phillips isn’t the only on-the-fringes presence that will be hoping he gets increased first-team minutes now, with Jack Clarke also standing out throughout as a thorn in the side of Inigo Calderon’s men.

Jack Clarke's performance in numbers vs Bristol Rovers

Much like his midfield teammate, the ex-Sunderland man has found his time at Portman Road to date choppy, to say the least, with only four starts coming his way in top-flight action.

He will hope, even though it is just against a third-tier opponent, that his impressive showing today means more starts will be afforded to him in the league, having picked up Ipswich’s second goal on the day among other standout moments.

Away from finding himself in the right place at the right time to tap home his side’s second, Clarke also managed to set up Jack Taylor’s third to put the tie beyond any reasonable doubt, with calls from the away side for offside falling on deaf ears.

Away from that slight controversy, the silky winger also confidently completed 100% of his dribbles, whilst also managing to get stuck in as an energetic figure down the left with five total duels won.

As a result, East Anglian Daily Times journalist Alex Jones would hand out a high 7/10 rating to Clarke post-match, with the 24-year-old attacker now hopeful he’s done enough to put together a compelling argument for more chances in the Premier League.

After all, Clarke did clatter the post away at Fulham from off the bench with his only effort on the Cottagers net, alongside also assisting Taylor’s dramatic winner away at Wolverhampton Wanderers back in December from just 15 minutes of action, meaning he can deliver on the big stage away from just starring against the perceived easier sides in the FA Cup.

Hardik Pandya shines with bat and ball as India go 1-0 up

He top-scored with 51 off 33 as India racked up 198 for 8 and then took four wickets to dismantle England

Is Bhuvneshwar Kumar now a certainty for India’s World Cup squad?

The post mortem into India’s group-stage exit from last year’s T20 World Cup was long and gruesome, but perhaps the diagnosis was simple: they are a different team with a fully-fit Hardik Pandya in their middle order.Hardik was a bit-part player at the World Cup following back and shoulder injuries, facing 45 balls and bowling only four overs across five games, but at the Ageas Bowl on Thursday night, he was the driving force behind India’s 50-run win. He top-scored with 51 off 33 as India racked up 198 for 8, playing with plenty of attacking intent, then took three wickets with the new ball to dismantle England’s top order, before finishing with 4 for 33.Related

Buttler's challenge is to find his own voice, and continue England's evolution

In India's gauntlet match, Kohli must hit the right gears to stay in

Rohit Sharma, returning to competitive cricket after contracting Covid-19, chose to bat first on an excellent pitch, and set the tone with 24 off 14 before edging Moeen Ali’s arm ball through to Jos Buttler, in his first game as England’s full-time limited-overs captain after Eoin Morgan’s international retirement.Deepak Hooda and Suryakumar Yadav both contributed with fast-scoring cameos, putting England’s attack under pressure, though Chris Jordan’s impressive spell of 2 for 23 in four overs, eschewing his usual yorker plan for hard lengths, kept India below 200.England needed a fast start but slumped to 33 for 4 against the new, swinging ball. Arshdeep Singh, on debut, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar both found prodigious movement as the sun went down, Bhuvneshwar bowling Buttler for a first-ball duck with a hooping inswinger.Hardik struck twice in his first over, removing Dawid Malan and Liam Livingstone, then removed Jason Roy with the first ball after the powerplay for an uncharacteristically scratchy 4 off 16 balls. Moeen and Harry Brook added 61 for the fifth wicket in six overs to keep England’s hopes alive, but Yuzvendra Chahal removed both of them in the space of five balls to end the game as a contest.2:26

Jaffer: Arshdeep Singh ‘a very skillful bowler’

High risk, high reward
India went hard against England in the powerplay, and Moeen in particular. Buttler introduced his offspinner to bowl the third over, matching him up against the left-handed Ishan Kishan, but after Kishan knocked a single, Rohit slog-swept him for consecutive fours through square leg.He fell immediately after, edging through to Buttler, but Hooda continued to take Moeen on, launching consecutive sixes over long-on to move to 12 off three balls. Kishan fell to his second ball from Moeen as Buttler had planned, top-edging a sweep to short fine-leg, but India finished the powerplay 66 for 2, with Moeen’s two overs worth 26.Hard lengths pay off
England have struggled big time at the death over the past year, epitomised by their defeat to New Zealand in last year’s World Cup semi-final, and made a distinctive shift in their plans in a bid to address that issue. Jordan tends to rely heavily on his yorkers, but used the long square boundaries at the Ageas Bowl to his advantage, banging the ball into the pitch and hitting 89mph/144kph.From 150 for 4 after 14 overs, India’s innings fell away somewhat. Matt Parkinson, playing as England’s main wristspinner with Adil Rashid making the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, dragged his figures back after an expensive start but was thrashed for six by Hardik to bring up a 30-ball half-century.He fell to Reece Topley shortly after, slashing to deep point, and despite a couple of late boundaries from Dinesh Karthik, India fell short of the 200-plus score that had looked like an inevitability for much of the innings.1:45

Was this a display of India’s new approach in T20Is?

Win the powerplay, win the game
Bhuvneshwar’s first over was a masterpiece, moving four balls away from Roy before hooping an inswinger through Buttler and into the top of his leg stump. Arshdeep, the left-arm seamer who starred for Punjab Kings at the IPL this year, shared the new ball on his debut and moved it both ways, starting his international career with a maiden to Roy.Malan hit England’s first four boundaries, three of them in the space of four balls, as he found his timing against length balls. But then he dragged Hardik’s nip-backer on to his own stumps as he looked to guide him away through third. Hardik struck again in his second over, following Livingstone as he shuffled across to scoop, inducing a glove through to Karthik, and when Roy miscued the first legal ball after the powerplay to third, India had the game sewn up.Moeen and Brook kept England alive, attacking Chahal and Axar Patel, but Brook picked out midwicket and Moeen was stumped in the same Chahal over to end any faint hopes of a comeback win. Hardik claimed his fourth wicket when Sam Curran edged behind, and Arshdeep marked his debut by dismissing Topley, caught behind off a slower ball, and Parkinson, slapping to point. The margin of victory would have been even wider but for India’s mistakes in the field, with Karthik, who dropped three catches, particularly culpable. But a 50-run win reflected their dominance. With five members of the Test squad returning for Saturday’s game at Edgbaston, they will be confident of sealing the series.
