Sell him on deadline day: Amorim must axe 5/10 Man Utd dud after Palace

Manchester United fell to their 11th Premier League defeat of the campaign this afternoon, losing 2-0 to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford earlier this afternoon.

A double from Jean-Phillippe Mateta in the second half secured all three points for the visitors, condemning Ruben Amorim to a second consecutive Premier League defeat on home soil.

The Red Devils currently sit in 13th position, just 12 points clear of the drop zone, with any hopes of European football next season all but over with just 14 games remaining.

It leaves Amorim with some serious work to do, with the role undoubtedly a harder job than he would’ve first envisaged upon taking over at the end of November.

With the transfer window closing tomorrow night, he only has just over 24 hours to make any more changes to the squad, with various players potentially opening themselves up to a move before the deadline.

Man United’s disappointing performers against Palace

Kobbie Mainoo was always going to face a tricky task this afternoon, featuring in an unnatural role as a centre-forward, with Amorim opting for the academy graduate in a false nine role over the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee.

Unsurprisingly, the 19-year-old struggled for large parts, losing nine of the 12 duels he entered and failing to complete any of his four attempted dribbles during the defeat.

He also could only muster 31 touches before being replaced with 20 minutes to go, with the manager’s chosen system not having the desired impact he would’ve wanted.

Noussair Mazraoui once again featured in a right wing-back role after his disappointing showing against Fulham last weekend, with it becoming clearer week after week that he’s more suited to a role in the back three.

The Moroccan failed to win any tackles during Sunday’s encounter, plus only coming out in 50% of duels – leaving the field at the same time as Mainoo – a signal as to how little impact he had on proceedings.

However, despite the respective displays of the aforementioned duo, another player was just as poor throughout the clash with Oliver Glasner’s side, with Amorim needing to cash in on the dud on deadline day.

Man United player dropped a 5/10 display against Palace

Winger Alejandro Garnacho has been at the heart of an ongoing transfer battle between Chelsea and Napoli for the majority of the transfer window, but still remains a United player with one day remaining.

Both sides have previously held talks, but no official bid has been made for the Argentine, who’s failed to have the impact he would’ve hoped for since the 40-year-old’s appointment.

However, he started the clash with Palace this afternoon, looking to grab his first Red Devils goal in the Premier League since the 10th of November against Leicester City.

It was another afternoon to forget for the 20-year-old academy graduate, featuring for the entirety of the contest, but unable to have any form of positive impact within the final third.

Garnacho managed to register three shots but was unable to direct any on target, whilst also missing one big chance and completing just 25% of dribbles – highlighting his lack of impact within attacking areas.

He also lost possession 15 times, losing 86% of the seven duels he entered and completing just one chance, looking lacklustre and unlikely to create an opportunity out of nothing.

As a result, the youngster was handed a measly 5/10 match rating by journalist Dom Smith, further showcasing how much of a frustrating afternoon it was for the Red Devils at Old Trafford.

After such a showing, Amorim must cash in on the recent interest in his services, with £70m a phenomenal price tag for a player who hasn’t found the back of the net in nearly three months.

Alejandro Garnacho for Manchester United

Whilst it would leave them a short period to find themselves a replacement, if that sort of money were to be presented to them on deadline day, Amorim would be foolish to turn it down, potentially finding a player more suited to his 3-4-2-1 system.

Manchester Originals crash out after failing to complete tall chase inside 72 balls

Oval Invincibles qualified for the Women’s Hundred final in style, racking up the highest score of this year’s competition as they brushed Manchester Originals aside by 32 runs at Emirates Old Trafford.Invincibles’ score of 163 for 2 was powered by an unbeaten 79 from captain Suzie Bates, and they can now look forward to the showcase match at Lord’s on Saturday against either the Southern Brave or Trent Rockets. In reply, Originals never got close, with the defeat ending their slim chance of qualification for the latter stages of the competition, despite 64 from Lizelle Lee in what could be her last match for the team.Seventeen-year-old Sophia Smale and Marizanne Kapp, who enjoyed a good day with bat and ball, were the pick of the bowlers, both finishing with two wickets as the Originals were restricted to 131 for 6 in a dominant display for the London-based side.Sophia Smale’s two early wickets extended Oval Invincible’s advantage•ECB/Getty Images

Knowing that a victory would guarantee them top spot and an automatic berth to the final, the Invincibles won the toss and chose to bat first, a decision justified by the fluent start provided by the experienced opening pairing of Bates and Lauren Winfield-Hill.The pair had raced to 62 in just 43 balls when Winfield-Hill was caught by Erin Burns in the deep of Emma Lamb for 25 but New Zealander Bates was undeterred, bringing up an impressive fifty off 33 balls, before Alice Capsey was bowled by Sophie Ecclestone for 18 trying to keep the runs flowing. That brought Kapp to the crease, returning to the team after missing the last two outings, and she and Bates played powerfully around the ground to elevate their team to an impressive 163 with an unbroken partnership of 67 from just 36 balls.Bates’ innings of 79 featured nine fours and two sixes, while Kapp’s 36 contained five boundaries, including one maximum. That total was just short of the overall record team total for the Women’s Hundred – 166 set by Southern Brave last year – but Invincibles will take satisfaction from knowing that their victory, coupled with the Brave’s shock defeat to Northern Superchargers earlier in the day means they will avoid having to play in Friday night’s Eliminator at Brave’s expense.Related

Originals had an academic target to chase the runs down in 72 balls for a spot in the play-offs, which seemed unlikely when Emma Lamb was bowled by Smale without scoring. Bates and Kapp then combined again, as Amy Satterthwaite was caught by the former off the latter’s bowling for just two.Lee’s lone hand was set against the wickets that tumbled around her. Burns was bowled by Smale for five, Sophie Ecclestone was caught by Capsey off Kapp for one, and Daisy Mullan was run out for nine on her Hundred debut.Lee reached her fifty off 34 balls before finally perishing for 64 off 41, caught on the boundary off Eva Gray, to a warm ovation from the appreciative home crowd.Ami Campbell restored some pride in Originals’ performance, striking a couple of boundaries in a run-a-ball 23, but it wasn’t enough to save her side from elimination.

Pep’s answer to Lewis-Skelly: Man City have struck gold on "superb" gem

Manchester City’s troubles continue, and their fixture list isn’t getting much easier any time soon.

On Sunday, the Sky Blues were steamrollered 5-1 by Arsenal in North London, conceding four times after Erling Haaland had equalised with a towering header shortly after half time, completely capitulating as Pep Guardiola suffered their heaviest defeat of his managerial career.

This saw the Sky Blues slip down to fifth in the Premier League table, in a real battle for Champions League qualification.

On Saturday, the Citizens will face Leyton Orient in the FA Cup but, after that, they’ll meet holders Real Madrid in a two-legged Champions League tie, while their next four league matches are against Newcastle, Liverpool, Tottenham and then Nottingham Forest.

So, for Man City’s form to improve in the coming weeks, something needs to change, but do they already have the perfect youngster who could come in and help solve their issues both in and out of possession?

As it happens, he could be their answer to man of the moment; Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Myles Lewis-Skelly's success at Arsenal

Of course, during Sunday’s 5-1 demolition, Arsenal’s Lewis-Skelly was the main character, putting in, as Sam Blitz of Sky Sports called it, a “dazzling… stunning performance”, scoring the third goal that got the party started, then imitating Haaland’s meditation celebration, after the Norwegian striker had asked the teenager who he was following September’s heated draw.

Lewis-Skelly made his senior debut off the bench at the Etihad earlier this season, shown a yellow card before even making it on the pitch, a rare feat, only starting a first-team game for the very first time against Monaco in mid-December.

Now though, he has cemented himself as the Gunners’ first-choice left-back, starting seven of nine Premier League games since then despite, as Arsenal youth expert Jeorge Bird notes, the fact he “mainly played in midfield” at youth level.

Alex Howell of BBC Sport outlines that Lewis-Skelly “received a standing ovation” for his performance in January’s North London derby win, while Simon Collings of the Evening Standard believes Arsenal “have found their next big academy star”.

The fact that both 18-year-old Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, who’s still only 17, scored was a stark reminder of what Man City are missing right now, having sold many of their most highly-rated youngsters.

As outlined by Miguel Delaney of the Independent, Cole Palmer, Roméo Lavia, Morgan Rogers, Liam Delap and Taylor Harwood-Bellis are amongst the many Man City academy graduates who have been sold in recent years and are now staring at Premier League level.

Rob Dawson of ESPN notes that this has allowed the Citizens to spend big this January, with these academy sales allowing them to comply with Profit and Sustainability rules, but Jamie Jackson of the Guardian believes an “ageing squad” is a key reason behind Man City’s downturn in form, suggesting these academy graduates would’ve made an impact.

Nevertheless, is one who has stuck around being under-utilised, as Guardiola searches for solutions?

Manchester City's answer to Lewis-Skelly

Earlier this season, Guardiola was full of praise for 20-year-old Rico Lewis, describing him as “so intelligent”, adding “he’s playing because he’s playing really good.”

Well, in more recent times, Lewis has not been playing, seeing just 18 minutes of action across the last four Premier League games, introduced at Ipswich with the score already 6-0, not starting any of the last seven matches in any competition.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Instead, Guardiola has favoured Matheus Nunes at right-back, with the Portuguese international starting all seven of those fixtures, despite the fact Michael Cox of the Athletic described Nunes as an “uncomfortable… makeshift right-back”, while Graham Ruthven of Forbes adds that he “doesn’t have the defensive instincts of a natural full-back”.

Lewis’ lack of recent action is a mystery, so let’s analyse how he and Lewis-Skelly compare as like-minded inverted full-backs who were more accustomed to playing in midfield in the youth teams.

Of course, as noted in the table, Lewis has played more than twice the number of minutes Lewis-Skelly has accumulated this season, with the Arsenal youngster only offering a small sample size.

Manchester City defender Rico Lewis.

That caveat aside, the numbers underline that Man City’s full-back, who’s vastly more experienced, is significantly better in possession while comparing favourably in most out-of-possession metrics too.

In the Premier League this season, only nine players have a higher pass completion percentage than Lewis’ 92.1%, of which four have attempted at least 150 fewer passes, while he is the youngest player in the top 39 of this statistic.

So, after Sam Lee of the Athletic praised Lewis’ “superb progress” earlier this season, his importance has faded, but he could be just the injection of youth, exuberance and quality that Man City need ahead of a nightmare run.

The women’s T20 cricket competition will feature in the Commonwealth Games 2026 to be held in Australia. It was among the 20 sports included in the next iteration to be played in Victoria, ICC said in a release. It follows the success of women’s cricket, which made its debut in the Birmingham edition earlier this year.”We are delighted to know that women’s cricket will be part of the Commonwealth Games in Victoria,” Wasim Khan, ICC General Manager – Cricket, said. “It will be another significant landmark for the sport after its huge success in recent years, including Birmingham. The continued growth and upward trajectory of both the women’s game and T20 cricket fits perfectly with our long-term ambitions that include being part of the Olympic Games.”Women’s cricket has witnessed a sharp upward curve with rising standards and a rapidly increasing fan base. The sight of 86,174 fans in Melbourne for the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 still lives strong in our memories and so we just can’t wait for another opportunity to showcase the women’s game, this time in Victoria in 2026.”Hosts Australia are the defending champions having won the gold medal thanks to their nine-run win over India at Edgbaston in August. New Zealand finished with bronze medal, having defeated England in the deciding contest. The Commonwealth Games in 2026 will run from March 17 to 29 in four regional hubs of Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong and Gippsland. The 2022 edition was the first time that women’s cricket as well as the T20 format got featured in the Commonwealth Games, following men’s 50-over cricket in the tournament in Kuala Lumpur.

Clement can save himself from the sack by unleashing Rangers’ very own Kuhn

Just when Rangers supporters thought this season could not get any more miserable, it did.

On Sunday, Philippe Clement’s Gers side were astonishingly dumped out of the Scottish Cup by Championship side Queen’s Park, a result that Adam Binnie of BBC Sport described as “one of the biggest upsets” in the competition’s 152-year history.

The Spiders’ scored with their only shot of the afternoon before Rangers were awarded a very soft penalty in the dying seconds of stoppage time, but James Tavernier’s spot-kick was saved by Calum Ferrie, sparking outraged and mutinous boos all around Ibrox from those who remained to vent their frustrations.

This is Queen’s Park’s first Scottish Cup victory over Rangers since ’82, 1882 that is, is also the Gers’ first Scottish Cup defeat against lower league opposition since being dumped out by Berwick Rangers in 1967 while, remarkably, it’s the first time in history they have been defeated by a side from a lower division in this tournament.

Following such an ignominious cup exit, Clement is fighting to keep his job, making Sunday’s trip to Tynecastle so crucial.

Rangers' continued struggles this season

As noted by Ewan Murray of the Guardian, Clement “was already under pressure” prior to Sunday’s result, but he asserts that defeat to Queen’s Park “is likely to prove fatal in terms of his reputation with supporters”.

This season’s Scottish Premiership title race was over before it ever began, with Rangers 13 points adrift run-away league-leaders Celtic, staring down the barrel of a sixth trophyless season out of the last nine, having also been beaten by their fiercest rivals on penalties in December’s League Cup Final.

This gap is due to the Light Blues’ horrendous away form, winning only four of 12 Premiership away games so far, scoring just 16 goals in these matches, the same number as Dundee United and one fewer than Hearts, yielding fewer points than the Tangerines on their travels.

In stark contrast, the Gers’ Europa League form has been excellent, going straight through to the round of 16, which Clement called a “massive achievement” considering his side actually faced four of the seven teams who finished above them.

They will face one of Twente, Bodø/Glimt, Anderlecht or Fenerbahçe in the knockout stages, the first leg coming up on 6 March, and Michael Grant of the Times believes their European results are keeping Clement in a job “for now” but as soon as they’re eliminated “his days are numbered”.

Where would Rangers be without Václav Černý who, since arriving on loan from Wolfsburg in July, has scored 13 goals and registered seven assists this season, making him one of the best-performing Premiership players.

As outlined in the table above, only Celtic duo Daizen Maeda and Nicolas Kühn have racked up more combined goals and assists than Černý this season.

Indeed, the Czech international is one of only three Rangers players to have accumulated 11 or more, the others being centre-forwards Hamza Igmane and Cyriel Dessers.

According to FBref.com, in this season’s Europa League, Černý’s goals – xG figure is an impressive +1.4, a tally only bettered by 16 of the 649 players who’ve had a shot in this year’s tournament, with the winger accumulating 26 shots during the league phase; only Victor Osimhen of Galatasaray (41) mustered more.

Jack Walker of the National reported that Wolfsburg are willing to sell him for £6.75m, a deal Rangers must do everything in their power to finalise before next season starts early on 22/23 July with a Champions League second-qualifying round tie.

At the moment, it appears unlikely Clement will still be in charge by the time that fixture comes around, he’ll probably be out of a job by Monday morning if his team are defeated at Hearts on Sunday, but if there’s one man who can keep him in situ, it’s Černý.

Rangers must sack Clement and hire "kamikaze" replacement

Rangers should move on from Philippe Clement by pursuing a deal for this manager.
