Pressure on Australia to bounce back with (big) win after their NRR takes a tumble

On paper, Sri Lanka have the better spinners, but they will need some stars to align if they are to upset the hosts

Marsh: ‘Our backs are against the wall and we know what’s in front of us now’

Big pictureIs it possible? Are Sri Lanka in a better place going into this match than defending champions Australia? You could make a case, but not really. It’s complicated. Australia were beaten so profoundly by New Zealand in their tournament opener, their NRR has plummeted to a truly appalling -4.45. Sri Lanka, having thrashed Ireland first up, have a NRR of 2.467.NRRs only come into play if teams are on equal points ahead of the semi-finals. But you’re aiming to be the two best sides in a six-team group. Competition is fierce. And NRRs will weigh on teams’ minds. Sides as far back as Australia, who ordinarily are expected to beat Sri Lanka on home tracks, have that little extra inkling of pressure upon them. They don’t just want to beat Sri Lanka; they want to win big.Sri Lanka will be content with just winning. In Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, and Dhananjaya de Silva, they have better spinners than Australia. But on paper, Sri Lanka don’t win a lot of battles. They don’t have a pace attack of the quality of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood. And while Kusal Mendis looks as if he is working himself up to serious form, Sri Lanka’s middle order did not put up serious numbers in the qualifiers. They are heavily dependent on those 8-12 overs of spin.If an upset is to happen here, some stars will need to align. The likes of Dasun Shanaka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa may have to produce the kinds of innings they did in the recent Asia Cup, which Sri Lanka won. Sri Lanka’s inexperienced seamers will need to perform beyond expectation also.Related

Finch: Australia's 'fate out of our own hands to a point'

Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)Australia LLLWWSri Lanka WWWLWIn the spotlightAustralia’s openers are their top-scorers this year, which isn’t particularly surprising. However, they have hurt Sri Lanka many times before, and will be confident of taking down the opposition’s novice seam attack. Aaron Finch has three fifties and strikes at 136 against Sri Lanka. David Warner has monstered Sri Lanka in the past, hitting six fifties and a hundred. His 642 runs against them is his highest against any opposition, and he has scored those runs at a strike rate of 141. Sri Lanka will probably need them out early to make a game of this.Although Wanindu Hasaranga gets a lot of headlines, Maheesh Theekshana has been building himself quite the record too. After 28 T20Is, he has 29 wickets, and an impressive economy rate of 6.42 when you consider he often bowls at least one over in the powerplay. In the absence of Sri Lanka’s go-to death bowler in Dushmantha Chameera, Theekshana will likely have to bowl towards the end of an innings too. So far, he’s done the job nicely. He’s got seven wickets, and maintained an economy rate of 5.86 so far in this tournament.Australia’s opening defeat to New Zealand has left their NRR at an appalling -4.45•ICC/Getty Images

Pitch and conditionsThere is a small chance of rain in Perth, but it’s unlikely to impact the cricket hugely. Not a lot is known about how the Perth stadium pitch will behave, because it is not only a new stadium, it also saw little cricket over the pandemic. But it tends to be a boundary-hitting ground.Team newsSri Lanka are likely to slot Pathum Nissanka back in the XI, and perhaps put seamer Pramod Madushan back into play too, with both seeming to have recovered from niggles. This means Ashen Bandara, and perhaps Lahiru Kumara, go out.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Kusal Mendis (wk), 2 Pathum Nissanka, 3 Dhananjaya de Silva, 4 Charith Asalanka, 5 Bhanuka Rajapaksa, 6 Dasun Shanaka, 7 Wanindu Hasaranga, 8 Chamika Karunaratne, 9 Maheesh Theekshana, 10 Pramod Madushan, 11 Binura Fernando/Lahiru KumaraAustralia are likely to be unchanged despite their big loss.Australia (possible): 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch (capt.), 3 Mitchell Marsh, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Tim David, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh HazlewoodStats and triviaAustralia have won eight of the T20s they’ve played against Sri Lanka at home, to Sri Lanka’s seven. One of those wins was a Super Over victory. Dasun Shanaka has had an outstanding 2022, in which he’s hit 456 runs, at a strike rate of 142. But he’s had a modest World Cup so far, with scores of 29, 0, and 8 in his three innings. The three most-prolific T20I batters against Sri Lanka are Australia batters. Warner is No. 1 and, Finch No. 3, with 446 career runs against them. Glenn Maxwell, at No. 2 on this list, has the most impressive stats – he’s hit 459 at a strike rate of 175.

93% passing: Rodgers’ "underrated" Celtic star just had his O’Riley moment

Celtic’s European campaign is over, cut short in the most heartbreaking fashion imaginable.

Having lost the first leg of their Champions League knockout phase tie 2-1 when Bayern Munich visited Parkhead, few gave Brendan Rodgers’ side a prayer in Bavaria on Tuesday.

However, after actually squandering four excellent first half opportunities, Nicolas Kühn’s cool finish mid-way through the second 45 had the Bhoys on course to cause an almighty upset.

However, just as everyone inside the Allianz Arena was preparing for extra time, the Bundesliga leaders snatched victory; Kasper Schmeichel produced yet another remarkable save, but Cameron Carter-Vickers’ subsequent clearance found its way into the net via Alphonso Davies.

So, devastation for those bedecked in hoops, but they can certainly take heart from two outstanding performances against the six-times champions of Europe, with one member of the side, in particular, catching the eye, being compared to a Celtic great of the very recent past.

Matt O'Riley's impact at Celtic

When Matt O’Riley arrived at Celtic, joining from Milton Keynes for a reported £1.5m in January 2022, he was a complete unknown, having made just five appearances in Fulham’s first team, before appearing 54 times at EFL League One level for MK.

History could have panned out so differently, because Ange Postecoglou’s first choice was actually Australian international midfielder Riley McGree, who chose to go to Middlesbrough instead, with Boro cheekily posting ‘some people prefer red to green, but hey ho’, a caption that has gone down in Celtic folklore.

Fair to say, supporters are pleased events panned out the way they did, given that, as Stefan Bienkowski of Transfermarkt puts it, O’Riley became ‘unquestionably the best player in Scotland’.

During his time in Glasgow, the Danish international scored 27 goals and provided 35 assists in 124 matches, that’s a goal involvement every 146 minutes, winning six major trophies, before being named Celtic Player of the Year and Celtic Players’ Player of the Year last season.

O’Riley was then sold to Brighton & Hove Albion for £25m in August, a joint-club-record sale, having more than made his mark in just two and a half seasons in Glasgow’s East End.

One of his most eye-catching performances came as the Celts made their Champions League return following a five-year exile, hosting reigning champions Real Madrid no less.

O’Riley – who “did not look out of place at all against Madrid”, according to Guillem Balague – had 43 touches, completing 77% of his passes and creating two chances on a night where, as Jonathan Liew of the Guardian put it, Celtic outplayed Los Blancos for long periods.

That night, as with Tuesday, ultimately ended in disappointment against a European juggernaut, but did a current Celtic midfielder put in an equally outstanding performance that proves he is worth his large transfer fee?

Celtic star just had his O'Riley moment

As O’Riley’s replacement in the summer, Celtic broke their club-record transfer fee to sign midfielder Arne Engels from Augsburg for a reported £11m on deadline day.

Chalkboard

Earlier this season, Joe Donnelly of the Glasgow Times described Engels’ start to life in green and white as ‘mercurial’, adding that due to the price tag, ‘an extra layer of expectation rests on the midfielder’s shoulders’.

However, in more recent weeks, Graeme McGarry of the Herald believes the Belgian had a ‘coming of age’ performance against Bayern Munich, with Robbie Hanratty of the National adding that Engels’ ‘hard work is paying off’, while former Motherwell and Scotland forward James McFadden labelled him “a class act”.

Still only 21 years old, his recent brace against Dundee took his tally to nine goals and ten assists for the season, with Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout believing he is still “underrated”, adding he “could easily play for a strong club in the top 5 league”.

Arne Engels

In Munich on Tuesday night, Engels completed 93% of his passes, created two chances and won two duels, proving his worth in a Celtic jersey. As writer Ryan McGinlay noted – in a similar manner to the aforementioned Balague – the one-time Club Brugge man “looks at home at this level”.

He may then have just enjoyed his O’Riley moment, but how does Engels’ first season as a whole compare to the current Brighton star?

Arne Engels

As the table shows, O’Riley’s statistics are more impressive across the board, aside from the fact Engels has scored nine goals, while acknowledging that seven of these have come from the penalty spot.

Nevertheless, it’s worth remembering that it took the Dane a season and a half before he truly exploded onto the scene, and the Belgian is showing encouraging signs that he will repay that £11m price tag.

Sriram: 'If we can challenge a team like India, we are not far away'

“We have never won two games in the Super 12s before – the boys should be proud of themselves”

Sridharan Sriram, Bangladesh’s technical consultant, feels the two close wins over Netherlands and Zimbabwe have made it a satisfactory men’s T20 World Cup campaign for the team, and the five-run loss against India should serve as a lesson.”It is the best tournament Bangladesh has ever had in T20 World Cup,” he said ahead of their last Super 12s game, against Pakistan in Adelaide on Sunday. “We have never won two games in the Super 12s in the history of Bangladesh cricket. The boys should be proud of themselves.Related

Glass half full for Bangladesh as small mistakes sink their T20 World Cup campaign

Emotion: Bangladesh's superpower as well as kryptonite

Litton comes out of his shell and shows the way

“I think it is a fresh start. I don’t know what happened in the past. We won two very close games against Netherlands and Zimbabwe. We lost a close game against India, but that happens.”Despite just two wins from four games, Bangladesh have an outside chance of making the semi-finals, but for that they must beat Pakistan and hope for other results to go their way, including South Africa not getting more than one point against Netherlands. The India match was a big one, where Bangladesh, at various points, threatened to win, but went down by five runs in the end. It was a “golden opportunity” missed, in Sriram’s opinion.”At the start of the game [against India], if someone said we will lose to India by five runs, anybody will take it,” Sriram said. “I think we got ourselves an opportunity to beat India. But we were not able to cross the line. The boys gained a lot of confidence by having got so close.”Everyone was disappointed in the dressing room to have lost by five runs. They realised what a golden opportunity they missed. It is a great learning for them. It gives the team a lot of self-belief that if we can challenge a team like India, we are not far away.”Chasing India’s 184 for 6, Bangladesh were 17 runs ahead of the DLS par score when the rain came down after seven overs, with Litton Das on 59 from 26 balls. But Litton was run-out after the break, and in a meltdown, Bangladesh lost four wickets in two overs – the 12th and the 13th – and that set them back.Sriram conceded that the batting was “frantic” in that period – Bangladesh lost six wickets for 40 runs in five-and-a-half overs. “It was quite frantic for that brief 15-20 minutes, which is understandable. The pressure got to the boys with 9.75 runs an over,” he said. Now, they have Pakistan to tackle.”We know what challenges Pakistan present. We played them in New Zealand recently. We have to turn up and play our best on the day,” Sriram said. “They are a very good side. We had opportunities in both games that we played against them in New Zealand. We are both aware of each other’s strengths. It will be a great contest tomorrow.”1:59

Shakib Al Hasan: ‘Panicking’, lack of experience of shortened games cost Bangladesh

One of the questions around Bangladesh in T20I cricket has been their inability to play a power game, which is the trend in most parts of the world. To Sriram, however, it’s not the only way to play in T20s.”In Australia, we don’t need that kind of approach. A powerful West Indies didn’t even qualify, so in Australia your approach needs to be different,” Sriram, who had worked with the Australian team for many years before joining Bangladesh, said. “We have to adapt and learn. There’s no particular format to play T20s. The wickets, conditions dictate everything. There’s no one-size-fits-all in T20 cricket.”Technically, Sriram’s contract with Bangladesh gets over after the World Cup, which could be as early as Sunday. Bangladesh next play Tests and ODIs against India at home in December, where Russell Domingo is expected to return as the head coach.”One game at a time, one tournament at a time,” Sriram said of his future. “My goal is now just to finish the World Cup on a good note. I haven’t thought about too far ahead.”

Turner helps Scorchers ace chase after Richardson four-for

Richardson was on hat-trick twice and ended up with 4 for 25 before Turner’s 53 helped defeat Stars

Tristan Lavalette29-Dec-2022

Quick Jhye Richardson bowled rapidly to overwhelm Melbourne Stars before skipper Ashton Turner again chased superbly under pressure as Perth Scorchers notched a six-wicket victory at PErth Stadium. After Stars elected to bat, Richardson was twice on a hat-trick and claimed four wickets to help restrict Stars to a modest 135.Emerging as the frontrunner to be picked in the Sydney Test match, left-arm spinner Ashton Agar started well before copping late punishment to finish with 1 for 36 off four overs. Scorchers batted cautiously in their chase before easily overhauling the target with Turner smashing 53 off 26 balls to power the defending champions to the top of the table.Richardson’s hot form continues
In a timely reminder to national selectors, Richardson has been sensational to start the season in a stunning return from a nagging heel injury. He took eight wickets in his first three games before leaving empty-handed last start against Adelaide Strikers. He was desperate to get back among the wickets but suffered a rare thrashing early against Tom Rogers, who clubbed him for three straight boundaries in the last over of the powerplay. But Richardson struck back with a clever slower ball before trapping Beau Webster lbw first up with a rapid delivery. He put everything into the hat-trick delivery with a ball clocked at 150 kmph dug out by Nick Larkin.Richardson wasn’t done and in the 14th over he again claimed wickets with consecutive balls. He was firstly aided by a superb catch from Faf du Plessis, who clung onto a skier to dismiss Nathan Coulter-Nile. He then cleaned bowled Luke Wood with a yorker to end the over but was made to wait for his chance at a hat-trick.He finally returned in the 18th over but was once again thwarted, this time by Trent Boult.Out-of-form Stoinis struggles, Boult’s career best knock
Without injured skipper Glenn Maxwell, a lot of pressure has been on Marcus Stoinis to fire. But he’s failed to deliver with consecutive ducks to start the season while battling Covid-19.He then made just four runs in a big home loss to Scorchers before being rested against Sydney Sixers on Boxing Day. Stoinis was hoping for a change of fortune on a ground where he smashed a whirlwind half-century against Sri Lanka at the T20 World Cup. With Stars in major trouble, Stoinis couldn’t come to the rescue and fell for 10.Wickets kept falling for Stars, who looked dead and buried at 8 for 86 before a cavalier 49-run partnership between Hilton Cartwright and Boult gave them a target to defend. Boult was enterprising with a trio of sixes to finish 23 not out off 16 balls in his highest T20 score from 44 innings.Josh Inglis and Ashton Turner added 61 off just 35 balls•Getty Images

Lyth performs, Turner provides finishing touchesAs has been their penchant for years, Scorchers prefer batting first and letting their miserly attack defend with aplomb. Opponents believe they are susceptible to chasing and their only defeat of the season was batting second against Hobart Hurricanes.Last start against Strikers, they only just got over the line chasing 134 after their top-order batted recklessly. Taking heed from that, Scorchers played cautiously with recruit Adam Lyth anchoring the innings.Having made just 25 runs in four innings, Lyth was under pressure to retain his spot but blunted Stars attack. It ensured Scorchers were unruffled despite the early wickets of du Plessis and Aaron Hardie, who was moved up to No.3 but made just 17 in an audition before a possible call-up to Australia’s third Test team.Lyth got to 35 before he unluckily played on leaving Scorchers with work still to do. Like he did against Strikers, Turner was cool under pressure as he thrillingly clubbed star legspinner Adam Zampa to continue his rejuvenation after a form slump.Zampa hammered, Coulter-Nile injury concern
Stars copped a hammering against Scorchers last start, conceding 229 – the third highest BBL score ever – and were hoping for a much better effort in an attempt to defend a modest total. But they couldn’t conjure enough breakthroughs and failed to curb Turner’s hard-hitting towards the end. Zampa copped a rare hammering and was unable to find an answer for a red-hot Turner as Stars slumped to their third straight loss.Stars will be sweating on a suspected hamstring injury to injury-prone quick Coulter-Nile, who left the field late in the game after he had completed his four overs.

Worse than Beale: The 5 worst Rangers managers of all time – ranked

Glasgow Rangers are now looking for their fourth permanent manager since November 2021 following the sacking of Philippe Clement.

His dismissal was imminent, especially after a dreadful Scottish Cup defeat to Queen’s Park in the Scottish Cup just a few weeks ago.

The 2-0 loss to St Mirren was the final straw for Patrick Stewart and the rest of the board, and his sacking was announced later that weekend.

The last manager to start and finish a full Premiership season was Steven Gerrard during the 2020/21 campaign, proving how badly run the club has become of late.

Philippe Clement sacked: 6 things the new Rangers manager must do at Ibrox

The next Rangers manager will have a big to-do list.

ByRoss Kilvington Feb 24, 2025

What next for the Ibrox side? The appointment of the new permanent manager must be the right one, or the Light Blues will fall further and further behind Celtic.

Since 1872, there have been plenty of excellent managers at Ibrox who have won league titles and domestic cups galore, while Willie Waddell even claimed the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1972.

However, some managers haven’t done quite as well. As such, we have taken a look at the five worst managers in the history of the club.

5 David White November 1967 – November 1969

David White became just the fourth permanent manager in the club’s history when he took over from Scot Symon in November 1967.

Symon had won 15 major honours, including six league titles, during his 13 years in charge of the Gers, but the writing was on the wall following a shock Scottish Cup defeat to Berwick Rangers in January 1967.

White took over that November and spent just over two years in charge at Ibrox. He was the first Rangers boss to fail to win a major trophy, despite losing just 22 of his 114 matches at the club.

Celtic’s dominance plus pressure from above meant White received his marching orders in November 1969.

4 Paul Le Guen July 2006 – January 2007

Having won three straight Ligue 1 titles with Lyon, Paul Le Guen was announced as the new Rangers manager in March 2006, taking charge ahead of the 2006/07 season.

It was a massive coup, but the Frenchman flattered to deceive in Scotland. In his first 10 league games, Rangers won just four times, slipping behind Celtic in the race for the title.

Europe was a different matter, as the club secured qualification for the knockout phase of the UEFA Cup, and it was clear Le Guen’s style favoured that of the continent rather than the rough and tumble of domestic football.

He left by mutual consent in January 2007 after a major backlash from the fanbase following Barry Ferguson being stripped of the captaincy.

Rangers' 8 best European nights – ranked

Rangers have enjoyed plenty of great European nights over the years, but which is the best?

ByRoss Kilvington Dec 25, 2024 3 Michael Beale December 2022 – September 2023

Former Rangers boss Michael Beale.

Michael Beale’s win percentage of 72.1% in charge of Rangers is the second-highest in the club’s history, behind only Ally McCoist.

In Beale’s case, this shouldn’t count for much, as the latter half of his spell in charge was dismal. He opened up his tenure by winning 14 of his first 15 league games, drawing only with Celtic, but things then took a downward turn.

A 2-1 defeat to Celtic in the League Cup final was a blow, and the Gers went on to lose two and draw one of their last eight games.

Poor signings in the transfer window that summer led to a dismal start in 2023/24, as the Light Blues lost three times in the league before the end of September while failing to make the Champions League group stages.

Beale was sacked after just ten months in charge, despite his healthy win percentage.

2 Philippe Clement October 2023 – February 2025

Rangers managerPhilippeClementbefore the match

Where to start with Clement? Despite there being quite a few names mentioned as potential successors to Beale, it was the former Club Brugge coach who was appointed as the new boss in October 2023.

Like many new appointments, the club enjoyed a new manager bounce. Not only did they secure a place in the knockout stages of the Europa League, but Clement led the Gers to their first League Cup since 2011.

Despite fighting back in the Premiership title race, Celtic ended up winning their third league crown in a row, while Rangers also lost the Scottish Cup final.

Hopes were high ahead of the current campaign, but the opening-day draw with Hearts set the tone for the next few months.

Upon his sacking, the Light Blues had won just 17 of their 27 Premiership games, losing five while slipping 13 points behind their rivals.

The football was excruciating to watch, with teams no longer fearing a trip to Ibrox, as evidenced by Queen’s Park in their Scottish Cup victory over the Gers a few weeks ago.

Rangers' most expensive sales of all time

Who left Ibrox for the most money?

ByRoss Kilvington Oct 9, 2025 1 Pedro Caixinha March 2017 – October 2017

There is perhaps no surprise to see who we have ranked as the worst manager in the club’s history.

Pedro Caixinha was a strange appointment. Before Rangers, he took charge of clubs such as Leiria, Nacional, Santos Laguna and Al-Gharafa – hardly an inspiring managerial career.

His side suffered a 5-1 defeat to Celtic at Ibrox, which was the club’s heaviest Old Firm loss at home, and worse was to follow.

Caixinha failed to bolster his squad, signing the likes of Carlos Pena, Eduardo Herrera, Dalcio and Bruno Alves, with only Ryan Jack and Alfredo Morelos leaving a lasting impression in Glasgow.

The 2-1 aggregate defeat to Progres Niederkorn of Luxembourg in the Europa League’s first qualifying stage goes down as the worst result in the club’s history.

5 wins from the opening 10 league games of the season saw Caixinha sacked after just six months in charge, losing to Celtic and Hibs in the process.

Across 26 games at the helm, the Portuguese manager recorded an average of just 1.81 points per game, while his side conceded 30 goals in that spell.

It was a terrible appointment in the first place, but his stats at the club, combined with horrendous transfer business and poor football on the pitch means Caixinha is the worst manager to take the reins at Ibrox.
