Everton fans react to Richarlison’s tweet on his English studies

As Everton star Richarlison can probably attest to, the demands of learning a new language can be tough for football players attempting to perfect their craft on foreign shores.

But if enough work and commitment is put into the process, then the rewards both on and off the field are enormous.

Did he really play for us?! No Everton fan has managed to name all of these obscure Toffees players….

And for Richarlison, that hard work is already paying off.

Not only is the young forward bagging goals left and right for Everton – having already scored a total of 11 goals and assisting four in the 2019/20 season – he’s also showing the willingness to improve his English.

The latest update of his studies had the fans absolutely buzzing and urging him to keep going…

And this commitment he’s showing is directly mirroring his performances, as one fan has already noted, and this can only serve to ultimately make him a better player and a better teammate to his fellow Toffees.

One other supporter already sees him as someone who’s top of the class just for the effort he’s putting in…

Finally, it’s fair to say that not only is he improving himself, he’s also setting an example for professionals – not just footballers – far and wide who move overseas in search of employment.

Credit where it’s due.

Liverpool to assess Harry Wilson during pre-season

Liverpool are undoubtedly one of the best teams in the world.

The European champions are breaking records left, right and centre, and to be honest, there’s not much you’d change about their team at the moment.

Indeed, everything seems to be perfect at Anfield at the moment, and you’d think that may not bode well for some of the Reds’ loanees looking to force their way into the team.

One man who has been impressing during his loan spell away from Anfield is Harry Wilson.

The 22-year-old has netted seven goals in 22 Premier League appearances at Bournemouth.

Understandably, this good form has us wondering what type of future he may have on Merseyside, and James Pearce had the latest on Liverpool’s plans with the Welshman.

What’s been said then?

The reporter was hosting a Q&A session on The Athletic, and one fan asked about Liverpool’s summer plans, they asked about the transfer budget, any potential incomings and sales, suggesting Wilson as one player who could potentially be sold.

“The owners always say they don’t put a figure on the budget, it’s down to what deals are there to be done and whether Klopp/Edwards/Gordon believe it makes sense financially,” Pearce said.

“Last summer showed they don’t ever buy just for the sake of it. I can’t see LFC shelling out £100m plus for either Sancho or Havertz. Werner is more realistic.

“For the likes of Wilson and Grujic, the plan currently is to give them a chance in pre-season and assess it then. However, if a big bid came in that could change matters.”

Needs to show something

If Wilson wants to make it at Liverpool he really needs to show something huge in pre-season.

As well as he’s doing for Bournemouth, it’d take something really special for him to compete with Mohamed Salah on the right side for the Reds.

Of course, Wilson can also play through the middle, but he’s made the right-wing his home this term starting 18 games on that flank.

Luckily, he is getting the chance to prove himself to Jurgen Klopp, and it’s an opportunity he simply has to take.

Pearce says that something could change if a big bid came in, and that isn’t too unrealistic.

His Transfermarkt valuation has increased by almost £12m since last summer, and if he keeps up his good form until the end of the season a team may want to take a punt on him once the window reopens.

Arsenal fans react to Sokratis’ comments about future

Arsenal’s recent win over Portsmouth showed there is reason to be optimistic about the future, as several youngsters proved they could have a lot to offer in the next few years.

Pablo Mari made his debut and a clean sheet shows that he was comfortable, and may give Mikel Arteta cause to consider his defensive options next season.

The Gunners signed David Luiz to strengthen their centre-back options in the summer, and alongside Sokratis Papapastathopoulos he has been a first-team regular this term.

Sokratis has made 26 appearances this campaign yet he has been talking about his future and a possible situation where he is not playing games, stating that he will leave the club if he finds himself in that position.

That is a big contrast to Mesut Ozil’s viewpoint, with his agent Dr Erkut Sogut suggesting last week that the German will definitely be staying in North London until his contract expires in summer 2021, and some fans alluded to that fact in response to Sokratis’ comments.

Aside from that, there has been a significant amount of supporters calling for the Greece international to leave the club, as they believe he hasn’t been good enough since he joined in 2018.

The 37 goals conceded in the 26 games he has played this term shows there is room for improvement, and that could lead Arteta to make changes ahead of his first full season in charge.

As a result, the calls for him to stay are minimal, and that suggests the 31-year-old needs to start showing more if he is going to win over the majority of the fanbase.

Celtic dodged the bullet with Niclas Eliasson but must be careful

Celtic’s January business was puzzling but it doesn’t appear to have mattered.

They brought in Patryk Klimala and Ismaila Soro who have played a grand total of 101 minutes since arriving in Scotland – the latter hasn’t featured at all.

However, they managed to swerve a bullet with one January target – Niklas Eliasson.

The Swede was linked in January, per The Sunday Mail (26/01 print edition – via Daily Record), but he’s been rather inept in recent weeks, now reduced to appearing on the substitutes bench in the Championship. The decision to not pursue their interest further appeared vindicated.

No midfielder in the second tier of English football has more than his 12 assists this term but the fact of the matter is that since being linked with a switch to Scottish football, he has only produced one assist and delivered a succession of underwhelming performances for Bristol City.

In fact, his lowest rating in the eight games since February, via WhoScored, has been a measly 5.75.

An exciting creative player on his day, the 24-year-old is the definition of an enigma. Bright and canny in spells, he has the potential to frustrate and disappoint in equal measure. As Celtic target nine consecutive titles and beyond, he is not the type of player they need in their ranks.

Eliasson is out of contract in the summer and consequently would cost Celtic nothing should they reignite their interest. Last month it was suggested he wouldn’t pen new terms, thus paving the way for the Hoops to make their move without many obstacles in the summer.

Although he’d cost nothing, Eliasson is now severely out of form and after ignoring him once, Nick Hammond would be foolish to bring him to Celtic Park purely on the basis that he’d be a free agent.

The Bristol City man has registered an impressive 1.7 key passes per game this term – laying on 56 in total. That tally puts him 17th in the division for chance creation so the very fact he has 12 assists is a testament to his teammate’s finishing abilities.

Eliasson is a creative hub but Celtic have a plethora of options in midfield who can provide the spark – that includes Callum McGregor and Ryan Christie who have combined for a total of 26 assists in 2019/20.

The greatest rivalry in world football: Test your Old Firm derby knowledge below…

They have been producing on a more consistent basis and rarely find themselves too many games without a goal involvement. McGregor, for instance, has contributed to 13 strikes in his last 12 outings.

Eliasson, therefore, clearly isn’t needed. Hammond needs to avoid another potential swoop in the summer unless his form drastically improves and he proves he can be more consistent.

Newcastle striker Gayle’s future discussed by The Athletic

The Athletic’s Newcastle United correspondent Chris Waugh does not believe that the club will extend Dwight Gayle’s contract, which expires in 2021, per The Pod on the Tyne podcast (March 11th, 11:03).

What’s he said?

Gayle has struggled for minutes thus far this season, playing the full 90 minutes in the Premier League just twice, against Burnley and Southampton in the last two weeks.

In total, he has made 13 appearances in all competitions but has yet to score; he last found the net in a league game in April of 2019, hitting a brace for West Bromwich Albion against Hull City while on loan at the Hawthorns.

Is life under Ashley really that bad? Maybe this quiz will change your minds, Newcastle fans…

And Waugh does not think he will be staying at St James’ Park for any length of time, claiming that the club will likely attempt to move him on once the transfer window reopens.

He said: “I can’t see Newcastle renewing Gayle’s contract, because he’s 30 I think in October.

“He’s on quite high wages as it is which has been part of the issue trying to get rid of him.

“He’s had a few injuries and I don’t think long-term they’ll see him as the answer and maybe in the summer they’ll sell him.”

Not good enough

Gayle is caught between a rock and a hard place, really.

This is a player who isn’t quite good enough for the Premier League and yet has repeatedly shown that he might be too good for the Championship.

Indeed, he has made 111 appearances in the top-flight, scoring 21 goals. In the Championship, he has played exactly 100 games, with 59 goals to his name.

Moving him on may well depend on how Newcastle finish the season – if they are relegated, it would likely pay to keep him around.

But Waugh is right that he isn’t the answer for the Magpies; he simply hasn’t been doing enough for Steve Bruce’s side.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have been told to start playing this man!

Crystal Palace: McArthur a fine purchase at £7m

Crystal Palace’s deadline day business in the summer of 2014 was fairly subdued, to say the least.

It saw Zeki Fryers join from Tottenham, and also played host to the woeful piece of negotiating that saw Glenn Murray join Reading on loan while Kevin Doyle arrived as his replacement – grim.

However, that specific deadline day did see James McArthur arrive from Wigan for a then club-record £7m.

The Scotland international had helped Wigan win the FA Cup during his time with the Latics, although he was hardly a marquee capture by Steve Parish having come from the Championship, if we were to be snobbish.

However, even the least-snobbish among us surely wouldn’t have foreseen McArthur being this good.

The former Hamilton man has become a club icon at Selhurst Park since his £7m move, to say the least.

McArthur has been involved in more Premier League wins than any other player in the club’s history, partaking in 67 victories for the Eagles – Wilfried Zaha stands second in that list with 64 to his name.

Furthermore, the 32-year-old has also made the second-most Premier League appearances for Crystal Palace with 188 to his name, making 199 appearances for the south Londoners in total.

If you were to divide his transfer fee by the amount of Premier League wins he has helped Palace achieve, then you’d discover that each victory involving McArthur has cost the Eagles just £104.5k, which is pretty good value for money after almost six years of service.

The Scot continues to be a key performer under Roy Hodgson to this day, and with his endless energy and spirit, it feels like he’ll have plenty of time left to make these numbers look even more glowing in his favour.

He is arguably the finest of Parish’s purchases in the last decade, if not since he took over in 2010, with all things considered.

Did he really play for us?! No Palace fan has managed to name all of these obscure Eagles signings….

Anguissa’s return could spell trouble for Leeds and WBA

Leeds and West Brom look favourites to be promoted to the Premier League, but they’re far from home and hosed yet.

There are still nine games of the season to go, and with Fulham just seven points behind Leeds, the top two still have to be looking over their shoulders.

Unfortunately for the current top two, the London club may soon become a lot stronger, and this ongoing football delay could throw a spanner into the works if and when football finally resumes.

Scott Parker’s side had to loan out some of their high-earners at the start of the season in order to cut the wage bill, but with the season potentially extending into the summer, one of those players could be back before the end of the campaign.

Watch Leeds United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

It was thought that Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa wouldn’t be back due to Villarreal’s option to buy him, but according to AS (via SportWitness), that now isn’t financially viable.

Therefore, Anguissa could return to Craven Cottage this summer, and with the height of the current pandemic predicted to be between 10-14 weeks away, he could still have a part to play in the Whites’ 2019/20 promotion push.

The Cameroon international’s performances last season would be enough to make Leeds and West Brom think they shouldn’t worry as he was named as one of the worst signings of the season, but he’s turned it up a notch this term.

This is a man averaging the fifth-most dribbles per game in La Liga, and it was previously reported that Real Madrid were looking at him as an alternative to Paul Pogba.

Anguissa back at Fulham could spell disaster for both Leeds and West Brom – he could add a new dynamic to Parker’s side that could see them make the step up to the next level.

Fulham’s £25m record signing may still have a say on how Leeds and West Brom’s seasons turn out.

In other news, this 2001 signing has to be considered amongst Leeds’ worst ever.

Sterling reports have lots of Liverpool fans talking

Raheem Sterling left Liverpool for Manchester City in such acrimonious circumstances that a future return to Anfield would have been deemed impossible by onlookers at the time.

Fast forward almost five years, however, and the landscape looks a little different.

A potential return still seems unlikely but that particular prospect has been gathering momentum in recent days.

And now a report from French media outlet L’Equipe has suggested that a return to Anfield cannot be ruled out amid Real Madrid’s interest in Sadio Mane.

It’s the type of transfer report that’s bound to cause a frenzy, and the majority of supporters have urged the club to avoid re-signing Man City’s talisman.

However, there were a couple of supporters who suggested it’s a deal they should be pursuing, with one even tipping Sterling to win the Ballon d’Or under Klopp’s tutelage.

Here’s what the Liverpool fans had to say in response to reports…

Would Tottenham target John Stones be a good signing?

According to a report in The Express, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to go head-to-head with arch-rivals Arsenal in a bid to sign £50m-rated Manchester City centre-back John Stones.

The report says that Spurs are keen on the 25-year-old with Pep Guardiola ready to show him the door at the Emirates, having clearly run out of patience with the injury and error-prone 25-year-old, who has also clearly struggled with his confidence.

Guardiola wants to recoup the £50m fee he paid Everton for the defender’s services in 2016, and he might have a keen buyer in Mourinho, who The Express say was keen on him when he was in charge at Chelsea.

Tottenham could certainly do with some defensive reinforcements having conceded 40 goals in their 29 Premier League matches this season to date, while they of course conceded seven goals at home to Bayern Munich in the Champions League last year, too.

Here, FFC’s writers give their verdict on a potential move to Spurs for Stones…

Jack Saville

“John Stones has received bad press following a handful of high profile errors for both club and country, but there is no doubt that the 25-year-old can still become one of the best on the planet in his position.

“On his day he is truly Paolo Maldini-esque, gliding across the turf with grace and intelligence to break up the play. He showed that much during the early days of his budding partnership with Aymeric Laporte, with an outstanding display against Liverpool in a 0-0 draw at Anfield a particular highlight.

“While Pep Guardiola’s positive influence on his ball-playing ability has certainly manifested during his time at Manchester City, lapses in concentration and errors in judgement have stunted his progress.

“With that in mind, Jose Mourinho is the master he needs to fine-tune his defensive repertoire and take him to the level many expected – and are still expecting – him to reach.

“In the midst of a new era under Mourinho at Spurs, the arrival of Stones would be a Levy masterstroke.”

Ben Goodwin

“There’s no question Stones has immense talent – he has quite literally won everything there is to win in England’s top-flight, racking up multiple league and cup titles all by the age of 25.

“Graeme Souness even compared him to Ballon d’Or runner-up Virgil van Dijk as recently as January, claiming the England international has everything it takes to reach that level if he can get “his act together”.

“However, a link-up with Jose Mourinho seems like a match made in hell. Stones has recoiled and regressed every time he has been challenged by Pep Guardiola, so how is he going to fare when Mourinho lashes out at him publicly like he did with Tanguy Ndombele?

“Given Spurs’ weakness in defence and Stones’ susceptibility to foolish blunders like his slip in the Carabao Cup final, it surely wouldn’t be long before he’d get outed like Ndombele has.”

James Beavis

“The link to John Stones is certainly an interesting one.

“Jose Mourinho clearly needs to strengthen his Tottenham Hotspur backline this summer, with the likes of Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris simply not as good as they once were, with mistakes becoming more and more common in their respective games.

“That makes the choice of targeting the Manchester City centre-back even stranger then, given his own tendency to make errors that can lead to goalscoring chances and goals for opponents, as in the 2020 Carabao Cup final against Aston Villa.

“Perhaps the Portuguese manager believes he can develop the England international’s game in north London to make him a solid defender – it would certainly be a risky move though, especially if he was to cost £50m.”

Spurs fans unleash on Harry Winks

Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been discussing their Harry Winks on social media this week after one Twitter account asked fans for their opinions on the midfielder and his future at the club.

And many in north London took the opportunity to take fire at the Englishman with them believing he’s simply not good enough for Spurs.

The 24-year-old came through the academy system at the club and made his first-team debut back in 2014, coming on as a substitute in the Europa League against FK Partizan.

Winks has since gone on to make 134 further appearances and has also picked up six national team caps.

This season, he has been a regular presence in Jose Mourinho’s starting XI, featuring 33 times without a goal or assist.
