Barcelona’s Ernesto Valverde seems to be walking on thin ice at the moment. The rumours of his potential replacements have not yet died down and former Blaugrana star, Rafael Marquez, has tipped Marcelo Gallardo to be a good pick for the Catalans when talking to TNT Sports.

What did he say?

The now 40-year-old retired centre-back has played 242 games donning the Blaugrana jersey and has even managed to score 13 goals and assist further 12 in the process as well.

By all means, he is one of Barcelona’s ex-stars and knows a thing or two about the club.

And it seems that he believes Gallardo, the current River Plate coach, has what it takes to take charge of a giant that is the Catalan team.

When talking to TNT Sports in an exclusive interview, he lauded Gallardo as the man with enough experience and knowledge to lead Barcelona in the future.

Here’s what he said in full, as quoted by Tribuna who provided a translation:

“I think he has earned their [Barca’s] trust with what he has achieved with River. I know that it’s not easy to come to Barcelona but Marcelo has all the experience and knowledge necessary to get a chance at such a big club.”

Time is up?

Even though it’s difficult to see Barcelona sacking Valverde mid-season, it seems that the Gallardo rumours are certainly getting some traction.

Marquez has basically given his blessing to the River Plate gaffer and his appointment could even seem realistic at this point.

But even though the former Blaugrana centre-back believes Gallardo has the experience and the knowledge necessary to handle the Catalan giants, his lack of any European experience might still stand in his way.

One way or the other, the clock seems to be getting nearer to midnight for Valverde and if results don’t suddenly start going his way, we could indeed be seeing a new Blaugrana coach sooner rather than later.

Of course, despite all those rumours circulating the media, Barcelona are still league leaders in La Liga and group leaders in the Champions League.

With that being said, the imminent sacking of Valverde does look unlikely at this very moment.

وقال ساكا في تصريحات عبر “بي تي سبورت”: “لقد بدأنا المباراة بشكل مروع للغاية، لم نخلق أي شيء، كنا سلبين للغاية”.

وأضاف: “ولكن كان هُناك الكثير من الإيجابيات في الشوط الثاني، أنا سعيد بما فعلناه في الشوط الثاني، ومنحنا أنفسنا فرصة للعودة في النتيجة بمباراة الإياب”.

وأتم تصريحاته قائلًا: “لقد أظهرنا أننا أفضل منهم، حتى بعد الطرد واستكمال المباراة بـ10 لاعبين، إذن فالأمر متروك لنا، عندما نلعب بشكل صحيح نكون قادرين على هزيمة أي فريق”.

A number of Newcastle United fans have taken to social media to lavish praise on the performance of Allan Saint-Maximin in Saturday’s Premier League clash with Bournemouth.

The 22-year-old is still waiting for his first goal for the club but there is no getting away from the fact that he contributed to his team’s 2-1 win over the Cherries.

According to WhoScored, before being replaced in the final exchanges, Saint-Maximin had two shots, completed four successful dribbles and made two tackles.

He is a threat with his pace and power even if the end product isn’t always there.

And many of the Newcastle fans were impressed with the performance of the attacker, who scored 11 times in 74 games for Nice ahead of a switch to St James’ Park.

Things are starting to look up at Newcastle courtesy of back-to-back wins, and the club’s supporters seem to have found a new hero.

أكد الدولي الألماني توني كروس، لاعب وسط ريال مدريد، أنّ فريقه سيُقدم كل ما لديه من أجل تحقيق الفوز على تشيلسي، في نصف نهائي دوري أبطال أوروبا.

وأكمل: “نحن في النصف الساعة الأولى لنا في مباراة الذهاب لم نضغط عليهم بشكل جيد، لقد كان من الصعب مُجاراتهم، لديهم سرعة كبيرة في الأمام، لاحقًا في المباراة عرفنا كيفية التعامل معهم بشكل أفضل، كنا أكثر إحكامًا مع الكرة”.

وأردف: “تشيلسي لديهم مدرب ألماني (توماس توخيل)، وأنا لست مُتفاجئَا بهم، إنهم فريق رائع، وصلوا إلى الدور قبل النهائي، وهم جيدون ويستحقون ذلك، ولكن نحن لدينا الجودة والخبرة لهذه المباريات”.

واسترسل: “لقد استعدنا لاعبين مهمين، باستثناء فاران الذي خسرناه، كل من يتواجد هنا يركض ويقاتل من أجل ريال مدريد، بعد 30 دقيقة في مباراتنا الماضية تمكننا من السيطرة عليهم”.

Towards the end of the first-half at Stamford Bridge last week, Crystal Palace’s one and only right-back in Joel Ward punched the turf in frustration as he realised he had suffered an injury.

Speaking about the incident, Roy Hodgson said: “He’s injured his groin. He felt a pain in his groin so it’s obviously some sort of strain in the groin. It’s obviously a massive blow because we don’t have other full-backs at the club other than Joel and Patrick and we can ill-afford to lose them.”

While Ward’s injury has exposed some awful summer work in the transfer market from Palace, the Eagles have been lucky in the respect that their only right-back has been present for every Premier League game so far.

However, there was one game Ward was absent for – the Carabao Cup tie against Colchester.

What did Hodgson do in that game? Well, with no other senior right-back to call upon, the former England manager picked academy prospect Sam Woods to start on the right of defence, and the youngster didn’t disappoint.

You may recall that a certain Aaron Wan-Bissaka was handed a chance after an injury to Ward, and while it would be far-fetched to say that Woods is the next one off the production line on the basis of one performance – he certainly did his chances no harm against Colchester.

At the time, we detailed that Woods had showed signs of becoming Ward’s understudy with an excellent performance, in which he almost scored a brilliant goal amid what was a confident showing down the right flank.

It remains to be seen just how long Ward will be absent for, although if the former Portsmouth man is missing for a while, Woods has shown what he can do and has also waited patiently for an opportunity such as this one to arise.

The 21-year-old was solid and commanding against Colchester, winning four aerial duels, and there was no evidence to suggest that he would let his teammates down – none whatsoever.

Who knows – if Woods does well on a regular basis, he might be the one making a £50m move to a top six side in a season or two.

By all standards, the Dutch squad completely overran their opposition and convincingly secured another win for the tally in the process.

Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong was part of the team once again and while the Blaugrana midfielder did have a good game, he was mostly overshadowed by Georginio Wijnaldum’s incredible performance.

The Liverpool star bagged a hat-trick that basically secured the victory for his national team and has done so in style.

And interestingly enough, many Barcelona fans were actually quick to shower Wijnaldum with praise on Twitter, calling him “world-class” along the way.

But still, some of them haven’t forgotten his goal in last year’s Champions League semi-final when the Reds dispatched Barcelona with an incredible 4-0 victory at Anfield.

There have been plenty of calls for Nathan Holland to be called up to the first-team this season, and rightly so. He has put in various eye-catching performances, most notably against Valencia B and Brentford B.

However, with all of the hype surrounding the 21-year-old winger, Joe Powell seems to have been left in the shadows in regard to the prospect of earning first-team opportunities.

In terms of his Premier League 2 form, Powell, 21, has managed 3 goals and 3 assists from 10 matches – with these numbers including the assists for both goals in a 2-0 win against West Bromwich Albion and a superb lob with his left foot to open the scoring against Stoke City.

Following that strike, Dmitri Halajko raved about Powell and the technical ability he possesses on the club’s official website: “That’s his second time this season where he’s lobbed the keeper from well near the halfway line. He did it in pre-season against Anderlecht, a little bit further out actually.

“He’s got that technical ability, so it wasn’t too much of a shock really because we know he can do it.”

The creative midfielder hasn’t just been doing it in the youth leagues though, as he showed that he has the quality to make an impact during the EFL Trophy loss against Exeter City last week.

His clever back-heel played an important role in winning the penalty that he eventually converted – he also scored from the spot in the win against Newport County.

All of this follows his spell on loan at Northampton Town during the second half of last season, in which he also impressed, getting 2 goals and an assist from 6 starts and 4 substitute appearances – which includes a wonderful half-volley to secure a 1-0 win against Newport.

Following the goal, Northampton defender David Buchanan praised the youngster, as reported by The Northampton Chronicle & Echo: “I’m not sure the goal deserved to be in that game because it was different class but he’s got that technique.

“He’s a young lad from West Ham learning his way and he’s come in, got his head down and integrated with the group fantastically well.”

The youngster also made his Hammers debut during that campaign, coming on for the final 28 minutes of the 8-0 Carabao Cup win against Macclesfield Town, setting up both of Grady Diangana’s goals on the night with first-time passes.

Considering how much he has impressed when he has been given an opportunity, it might not be too long before Powell begins knocking on the door for a chance in the first-team.
