Investigado pela Operação Zelotes, deflagrada pela Polícia Federal em 2015, Luis Cláudio Lula da Silva, filho do ex-presidente Lula,teria recebido cerca de R$ 500 mil do Corinthians entre os anos de 2011 e 2013. O problema é que ele não prestou nenhum serviço ao Timão para ter direito a esta quantia, segundo matéria do jornal “Folha de S.Paulo”.

A publicação afirma ter ouvido nove pessoas que trabalharam ou ainda trabalham no departamento de marketing do Corinthians, setor no qual Luis deveria ter atuado, e eles afirmaram que o filho de Lula jamais exerceu função nessa área para o Timão.

– Não me lembro de nenhuma tarefa que ele tenha sido convocado para desenvolver ou que ele tenha realizado algo – afirmou à “Folha” Luis Paulo Rosenberg, economista e chefe do departamento de marketing do Corinthians entre 2007 e 2012.

Luis Cláudio Lula da Silva fez parte da comissão técnica do técnico Mano Meneses no Corinthians, na primeira passagem dele pelo clube, que aconteceu entre 2008 e 2010. Ele exercia a função de preparador físico.

O filho do ex-presidente deixou o clube em 2010, retornando no ano seguinte, após ter criado a empresa de marketing LFT. Desta vez, para integrar o departamento de marketing. Neste período, segundo a “Folha”, recebia um salário de R$ 20 mil, R$ 5 mil a mais em relação aos vencimentos da passagem anterior.

O fato de os pagamentos ao filho de Lula terem sido feitos no período da construção da Arena do Corinthians, em Itaquera, que recebeu jogos da Copa do Mundo de 2014 – entre eles a abertura e uma semifinal – fará os investigadores da Zelotes abrirem uma nova frente de investigações. O estádio foi construído com empréstimos do BNDES, banco público federal.

Ainda de acordo com o jornal, o Corinthians foi o primeiro cliente da empresa do filho de Lula. A LFT é investigada por receber R$ 2,4 milhões do lobista Mauro Marcondes, preso sob a acusação de comprar medidas provisórias para favorecer montadoras.

Segundo a “Folha”, o advogado de Luis Cláudio Lula da Silva não quis falar ao jornal sobre o caso. Já Andrés Sanchez, ex-presidente do Corinthians e responsável pela contratação do filho de Lula, afirmou que não há nenhum,a ligação entre o trabalho dele e a construção da Arena em Itaquera. Sanchez, que é deputado federal pelo PT-SP, diz ainda ter toda a documentação para apresentar a quem quer que seja.

The Gunners have been short of creativity this season, with just 16 goals scored in their first 16 games of the new Premier League season.

Perfect upgrade on Ozil

Whilst things haven’t quite gone to plan for Brandt this season – he’s completed the full 90 minutes just twice in the Bundesliga – there’s no doubting the kind of talent the Germany international possesses.

His former coach at Dortmund, Lucien Favre, said: “He can play different positions in different systems, on the wings, between the lines, in a midfield two or three, even as a striker. He offers many solutions for a coach. That’s his great quality, that’s his strength.”

That versatility sets him apart from Ozil, who whilst he could potentially play off the right, is at his best in that number ten role. Brandt can play on either flank, and with Arteta showing he is a tactically astute manager, the 24-year-old’s ability to adapt to different systems and demands seems tailor made for the Gunners right now.

In August 2017, he became the youngest Bayer Leverkusen player to rack up 100 Bundesliga appearances, and has already got plenty of Champions League experience with Dortmund too.

If Edu can pull off a deal for the £31.5m-rated record-breaker, then Arsenal may just have found their ideal Ozil upgrade.

Mike Ashley could put any fears of relegation to bed by sanctioning a deal for Newcastle United to sign AFC Bournemouth forward Joshua King in the January transfer window.

According to The Sun, King is proving to be a problem for a number of his potential suitors by demanding a mammoth £120,000-per-week contract to leave the Vitality Stadium this month.

Newcastle, Aston Villa and Fulham are all said to be tracking the Norway international’s situation, while Everton may shelve their plans to replace Cenk Tosun with King if he refuses to lower his demands as they only see the 29-year-old as a potential squad player.

Newcastle are happy to wait until the end of the season to welcome King to St. James’ Park as he is due to be a free agent in the summer, and thus avoid having to pay Bournemouth the rumoured £15m they are said to be demanding.

King believes he is deserving of a huge pay rise on his current £45k-p/w deal to leave Bournemouth this month, as he will be able to negotiate lucrative terms and a sizeable signing bonus if he leaves the south coast as a free agent like Ryan Fraser achieved last year.

Callum Wilson also joined the Magpies from the Cherries in the previous transfer window for £20m and signed a £46k-p/w contract.

King penning a £120k-p/w deal would make the Norway international Newcastle’s top-earner by some margin, with Joelinton currently the best-paid player on £86.5k-p/w terms.

Should Newcastle sign King?

Newcastle should do all they can to bring King to St. James’ Park in the January transfer window and reunite the forward with his former Bournemouth teammates Fraser and Wilson, as the 29-year-old may prove to be the difference between United being relegated or staying in the Premier League.

The Toon will well and truly be in a relegation fight if they lose at Arsenal on Monday night, where defeat or a draw will extend a six-game winless run in the top-flight that stretches to eight in all competitions after bowing out of the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.

Just seven points currently separate Newcastle from the drop zone, with no side claiming fewer points (2) than Steve Bruce’s men since the Toon last won a league game, while only Burnley, Southampton (3) and Fulham (2) have scored fewer goals (4).

King has struggled with injuries this season and tested positive for coronavirus, but struck twice and provided an assist in Bournemouth’s FA Cup win over Oldham earlier this month and once again offered creativity despite the Cherries losing 1-0 at home to Luton on Saturday.

The 29-year-old took a joint-game high three shots at the weekend and directed two on target (also a joint-game high), while delivering one of his side’s nine key passes as Jason Tindall saw the Cherries spread the creative burden evenly, per WhoScored.

King also made the second-most successful dribbles (2) among all who featured for either side with a 100% success rate, won two of his three aerial duels and offered two tackles from two attempts for the joint-second most by a Bournemouth player.

His performance was enough to take his seasonal averages to 1.0 shots, 0.6 key passes and 1.4 dribbles attempted a game, with efforts on goal every 44.9 minutes and a chance created every 74.8 minutes.

Wilson comparably offers a shot on goal every 47.5 minutes in the Premier League, where he is Newcastle’s top-scorer with eight goals in 15 games, and having another player who produces at a similar level could allow Ashley and Bruce to forget about facing relegation this season.

Having excelled for Palace’s development squads in the 2017/18 season, Mitchell has really broke onto the scene at Selhurst Park.

In Patrick van Aanholt’s absence, Roy Hodgson took a shining to the left-footed defender and was duly rewarded after he made his Premier League debut against Leicester City last year.

The 20-year-old has impressed since the start of this season with a WhoScored rating of 6.58, the ninth-best out of all Palace players and more than than Van Aanholt overall – bettered by the likes of established regular starters Andros Townsend and Wilfried Zaha.

Arsenal’s interest will come as no surprise to Palace fans given their mixed bag of results this season but the potential loss of Mitchell would be a devastating blow for the Eagles boss.

Stand firm

Whilst Wilfried Zaha has been heavily linked with the Selhurst Park exit in recent months, losing a young prospect in Mitchell would arguably be just as significant.

Of course, when the big guns come calling it can prove to be rather difficult to ignore such a tempting offer.

Mitchell’s defensive awareness on the left-hand side of the defence will no doubt have piqued the interest of those courting the London-born left-back.

While some modern-day full-backs like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Reece James will look to bring the ball out from the back and bring others into play, Mitchell is prepared to the dirty work, as shown by his willingness to throw himself into a tackle (or two), as he currently averages 3.4 tackles per game in the Premier League this season.

This is also the best of all defenders in the squad and is indeed the highest amount of tackles by any Palace player overall, ahead of the likes of James McArthur, Joel Ward and Nathaniel Clyne.

He also boasts a fine positional awareness, relying his speed, guile and cunning to limit goalscoring opportunities and break up attacks at the back, as evidenced in his 2.9 clearances and 1.1 interceptions per match since the start of the season.

It’s no wonder, then, that Hodgson has dubbed him an “excellent” colossus, with his former U16s coach Anthony Hayes even describing him as something akin to a “silent assassin.”

Steve Parish now needs to take note as this is precisely why he simply can’t afford to lose the £4.5m-rated ace. He’s too important to their chances of guaranteeing Premier League survival this season.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Josh King’s move to league rivals Southampton has fallen through at the 11th hour as the Saints do not want to match his wage demands.

It’s thought that a “small fee” and a swap deal for Shane Long had been agreed with AFC Bournemouth, whilst earlier today, talkSPORT’s transfer expert Alex Crook revealed that the 29-year-old is currently available for “a much lower fee” having once been linked with a £15m asking price.

Crook believes the Toffees are “back into the equation,” as a result.

Brands must act

On the face of it, the Merseyside outfit do not need another forward option as they are blessed with Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but neither has a true back-up.

Moise Kean is at PSG, while Cenk Tosun has returned to Besiktas, so really, Carlo Ancelotti is only one serious injury to the Englishman away from a massive disaster.

Calvert-Lewin may not have scored in his last seven appearances, but he still remains the Toffees’ top goalscorer on 11 goals for the Premier League campaign, via Transfermarkt.

King is an intriguing alternative as he can also provide cover on either flank. In five successive top-flight campaigns with the Cherries, the Norway international has scored at least six times, whilst a career-best of 16 came during the 2016/17 season, via Tranfermarkt.

The 6 foot 2 dynamo was deployed in five different positions during that time, though his most lucrative returns came through the middle.

Aside from his suitability of being a solid back-up to Calvert-Lewin, he could push Ancelotti’s wide options as he ranked 16th for dribbles per 90 in 2019/20, and was also 15th for possession won in the final third, via Sky Sports.

This sort of work-rate is something that the Everton boss desires from his frontline, so it’s no wonder that King was once dubbed the “complete package” by former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe when speaking to Match of the Day (via Football Faithful).

According to Spotrac, King is only on £45k-per-week at the Vitality Stadium, so given that he’s available for a lower fee and is on a fairly cheap salary, it would make sense for Marcel Brands to strike before 11pm.

Versatile, experienced and an eye for goal – what’s not to like? The Toffees could bounce back from their midweek defeat by securing King’s signature tonight.
