Hampshire players return for pre-season training

Hampshire’s players reported back for pre-season training after the Easter holidays today, with four fresh faces and a new trainer/physiotherapist to meet.

Victor Isaacs02-Apr-2002Hampshire’s players reported back for pre-season training after the Easter holidays today, with four fresh faces and a new trainer/physiotherapist to meet.Captain Robin Smith, who returned this weekend from hosting a touring party to New Zealand, introduced new signings John Crawley and Nic Pothas to the squad, along with last seasons’ successful second XI players Chris Benham and James Tomlinson, who joined the full time staff.Crawley, after his traumatic winter, was fitting in well with his new teammates and looked in fine touch in the nets against the pace-men and the spinners. He was also marvelling in the splendour of his new surrounds.Pothas, the South African who holds a Greek passport, confessed to having never previously met his new captain Robin Smith before today. He was reminded, however, by the webmaster and club statistician that it was Smith who had caught him out in December 1995, when he hit his maiden first-class century (147) for South African Combined Universities against the England tourists at Pietermaritzberg.Overseas star Neil Johnson, all-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas and batsman-wicketkeeper Iain Brunnschweiler were missing, as they are still involved in their domestic cricket in South Africa and Australia respectively. Also making his first appearance with Hampshire was Australian trainer Patrick Farhart, who was kept busy during the day with various niggles, including a stress fracture problem for James Schofield and the continued recuperation of spinner Charlie van der Gucht.

Adkins provides update on QPR target

There has been an update on QPR target Chuks Aneke, one regarding his contract situation.

What’s the talk?

Charlton manager Nigel Adkins has revealed that he held talks with QPR target Chuks Aneke earlier this week in an attempt to convince him to stay with the League One club.

Aneke is out of contract at the end of the month and Adkins has made it clear to the former Arsenal man that he wants him to remain at The Valley. He told the London News Online:

“We talk about Ben Amos, Chuks Aneke and Adam Matthews, there have been contract negotiations going backwards and forwards. I know there has been a lot of interest in the three of them, because they are good players.

“We’ll have to wait and see. For example, I spoke to Ben and Chuks yesterday. They know I want them at the football club. The players have to make a decision and the agents make a decision for the finances as well.”

Back in March, former Charlton boss Lee Bowyer lavished praise on the forward. He told London News Online:

“He was immense up there again today. He’s unplayable, on his day he’s unplayable. The only disappointing thing, if I’m him, is that he didn’t score more.

“To have that hunger and that aggression in the box, that hunger to score every time you get a chance. He could have had four today if he really wanted it but he got one and it’s won us the game. I’m really pleased for him, I thought he’s done really well.”

QPR must act swiftly

QPR must act swiftly if they want to secure a deal for Aneke following this update from Adkins. The Charlton boss is seemingly pushing hard for Aneke to stay at Charlton and that could lead to QPR missing out on the chance to sign him on a free transfer.

QPR need to make Aneke an attractive offer to dissuade him from staying in League One with the Addicks, as a mouth-watering contract offer from a Championship club could sway his thinking.

Aneke could be an excellent addition to QPR’s squad after his sublime season for Charlton in League One. The forward scored 15 goals in the league, whilst also providing two assists, despite only starting 11 games for the club. He scored six goals in 11 starts and nine in his 27 appearances off the bench, showing that he can make an impact from the start or as a substitute as required – making him a dream for a manager.

The £5.4k-per-week beast could, therefore, be a solid signing for Mark Warburton’s side. He could add an extra goal threat to Warburton’s options at the top end of the pitch, whilst arriving for free if his contract expires at Charlton as scheduled at the end of the month.

QPR must act swiftly to make sure that he does not sign an extension with Charlton.

Underdog Tigers fly north on Pura Cup quest

Captain Jamie Cox said Tasmania would be the underdog as it tried to win its first four-day cricket championship in the Pura Cup final against Queensland, which starts at the Gabba on Friday.

Don Woolford19-Mar-2002Captain Jamie Cox said Tasmania would be the underdog as it tried to win its first four-day cricket championship in the Pura Cup final against Queensland, which starts at the Gabba on Friday. But Cox also felt it was Tasmania’s best chance of breaking its drought since joining the then-named Sheffield Shield competition in 1977-78.The Tasmanian squad of 14 flew to Brisbane today with one major injury worry, fast bowler Damien Wright.Coach Greg Shipperd said Wright, who has a leg strain, was “quite doubtful” and would only play if he could come through a match-type preparation. His loss would be a major blow as he’s a key strike bowler and a productive lower order batsman.Cox said Queensland was entitled to be favourite, especially at the Gabba where it humiliated Tasmania in less than five sessions before the Tigers’ post-Christmas renaissance started – coincidentally with an equally lopsided win over the Bulls at Bellerive.”Queensland have been the benchmark,” he said.”They know how to win, they know what it’s all about.”Cox said if Martin Love could be dismissed cheaply twice, Tasmania would be well on the way to winning.”With Darren Lehmann, he’s one of the two most respected batters going around the country,” he said.”He’s a very high class batter who’s hurt us regularly.”Then there was the Queensland pace attack, which Cox said was as good as any in the country.”It’s been a major part of their success over the period when they’ve been so great,” he said.”The challenge is to go to the Gabba and get enough runs to win the game. We’ve struggled there in the last couple of years.”For all that, Cox believed it could be the year of the Tiger. While his team is relatively inexperienced – only he and batsmen Michael Di Venuto and Dan Marsh played in its last final in 1997-98 – he said there was a great feeling.”There’s genuine excitement and expectation, the feeling that this is our best chance so far, a fantastic opportunity for us,” he said. Moreover Tasmania’s current form – with 26 points taken from the last five matches – was as good as anybody’s.”Queensland just had an excellent win to secure the home final, but prior to that their form was a bit patchy,” he said.Cox said the weight of expectation and the hunger could lead to more tension than usual.”There may be a couple of guys who don’t cope as well as we’d like,” he said.”That’s the life of playing big games and it’ll be everyone else’s responsibility to carry these guys through.”It’s going to be a whole different situation for everyone, but one of excitement more than nervous tensions because we’ve come from being rock bottom and we’re revisiting the ground where we were at our worst and our very lowest point.”Neither Cox nor Shipperd singled out any key Tasmanian players, preferring to emphasise the team unity.Shipperd said Tasmania had come good because because they played smarter and tougher in the second half of the season.”We played all three disciplines – batting, bowling and fielding – as well as we could play, with contributions right across the group, and that’s built confidence, particularly in the new players,” Shipperd said.

Bent claims Everton have said Keane doesn’t fit in - Exclusive

Having arrived from Juventus with a lot of hype and expectations it has not been the move Moise Kean would’ve expected with a low point being subbed on then off just 18 minutes later by Duncan Ferguson, and former striker Marcus Bent claims that the club have realised that the Italian is not an Everton type of player.

Recent reports have emerged that Kean only wants to return to PSG this summer and the two clubs are trying to thrash out another season-long loan deal even with Carlo Ancelotti no longer being at the helm.

When Kean arrived in the summer of 2019, he was leaving Juventus after managing to net six goals in just 13 appearances for the Old Lady, but compare that to his two goals in 31 league appearances for Everton, there has been no reason for him to remain at Goodison Park based on his performances in the Premier League.

Kean impressed when handed a chance at PSG under both Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino but that has done little to sway Everton’s opinion on the striker not being up to the standards required, according to Bent who spoke exclusively to Transfer Tavern:

“They’ve said they don’t feel like he’s an Everton player but we know that he’s a goalscorer, but I just don’t think he fits the criteria at Everton.”

At the moment, Kean would have to dislodge both Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison to get a regular starting spot in the team and under new manager, Rafa Benitez, he may be handed a chance to prove his worth, but it’s difficult to see him starting ahead of those two.

If PSG are able to bring him back on loan as well as adding Georginio Wijnaldum to their side on a free transfer then it would appear to be two smart pieces of business without having to shell out loads of money.

Canada beat Namibia in last-ball thriller

Canada, despite several key players missing or struggling through injuries squeaked out a thrilling victory over Namibia yesterday at Windhoek

Dave Liverman11-Apr-2002Canada, despite several key players missing or struggling through injuries squeaked out a thrilling victory over Namibia yesterday at Windhoek. The last time the two teams met in Toronto it was Namibia who came out on top with a last over win by two wickets. This time the results were reversed, with Canada obtaining the winning runs from the 6th ball of the 50th over.Canada started the match missing two key players, Nick Degroot suffering from damaged knee ligaments, and Muneeb Diwan a dislocated finger. In addition Sanjay Thuraisingam, who had missed the previous match with a respiratory infection, and Ashish Bagai, suffering from lower back problems, played although less than fully fit.Canada opened the bowling with Joseph and Codrington, and it was Codrington who made the initial breakthrough, bowling van der Merwe for 2. The pace bowlers were not effective however, and Walters and Keulder saw Namibia past 50 without further loss. The introduction of the spinners drastically slowed the run rate, with the batsmen unable to get either Davison or Seeberan away. Davison bowled Walters, and Seeberan dismissed Murgatroyd and Keulder. The Namibian middle order all contributed useful runs but no-one was able to build a significant innings. Davison chipped in with a second wicket, but Namibia stil seemed poised for a total of over 200 when Thuraisingam returned for a second spell. As Namibia strove to raise the tempo with the final overs approaching, Thuraisingam rapidly dismissed skipper DB Kotze, BL Kotze, and Snyman, finishing with the figures of 3/37 off his 10 overs, a courageous performance. Skipper Joe Harris bowled the final over, and picked up a second wicket as Namibia were all out for 170 with three balls remaining. Seeberan had the remarkable figures of 1/16 off his 10 overs, and Davison 2/29 from 10 overs.Missing Degroot and Diwan, Canada’s batting was not at full strength. The unusual combination of Davison and Maraj opened the batting. Davison took an agressive approach and hit three quick boundaries, taking the opening partnership to 32 before being bowled by Snyman. Chumney and Maraj added useful runs, until Louw dismissed both. Louw bowled superbly, and the Canadian bats found it almost impossible to score from him. He took a third wicket when Billcliff was caught by Walters for only 7. At 95/4 Canada were in danger of collapse, so Bagai chose a mostly defensive role. When Harris fell to Burger, Canada were still 48 runs short; Sattaur made only three before being bowled by Burger, and Canada were 132/6, with few overs remaining. Thuraisingam contributed a vital eight runs, Codrington was run out, and with only two wickets left, Canada still needed twenty to win. Bagai and Joseph were the heroes of an amazing last over win against UAE in Toronto, and the experience stood them in good stead, as they saw Canada home off the last possible ball. Bagai was unbeaten on 34, a patient innings, facing 102 balls in total, and Joseph made 9. Louw finished with the superb figures of 10 overs, 5 maidens, 3 wickets, for 8 runs.
