An update has emerged regarding Aston Villa’s interest in Lazio attacker Joaquin Correa.

What’s the talk?

According to Il Messaggero, via Sport Witness, Villa are weighing up a swoop for the 26-year-old alongside fellow Premier League clubs Everton and Leicester.

The report claimed that Lazio are looking for a fee in the region of €30m (£25m), although it remains to be seen whether or not Villa are willing to meet their demands.

Bye-bye El Ghazi

Villa are reportedly willing to listen to offers for Anwar El Ghazi this summer, with Serie A club Roma believed to be keen on him. If the Dutchman departs before the end of the month, a replacement will be needed and Correa could be the dream candidate to come in for him, which is why Johan Lange must secure a deal for the Argentine dangerman.

El Ghazi found the back of the net 11 times for Villa last term, four of which came from the penalty spot. The 26-year-old scored 10 goals in the Premier League and one in the Carabao Cup, although he failed to register a single assist in any competition.

Correa scored 11 goals in all competitions for Lazio in 2020/21, with only one coming in the form of a penalty. He also provided six assists for his teammates, suggesting that he would offer more creativity than the current Aston Villa man with his ability to set up others.

In a tactical analysis of the forward, Breaking the Lines called him a menace for defenders with his movement and ability with the ball. They wrote: “It is no wonder why his style of play is drawing fans towards his potential. Correa’s wide repertoire of skills and his tricky dribbling makes him a menace for opposing defenders. His quick movement and awareness allow him to move into spaces or drop deep to enable his teammates to move forward.

“He can be the creative outlet of the side, creating chances for his teammates. It is because of his movement that he is able to draw defenders away, then using his dribbling to get past them and either provide a key pass or go for goal himself.

“Highly versatile, he can play on both wings or in the centre, with his wide array of assets allowing him to flourish in either position.”

This shows that he has the ability to play in a myriad of positions – as indeed he has done – whilst also providing quality performances, as shown by these quotes and the aforementioned statistics he racked up last season. His goalscoring was at a similar level to El Ghazi’s, albeit that it is difficult to judge the difference in quality between Serie A and Premier League, whilst his assists tally was far more impressive.

Therefore, he could have a great chance of coming in and being a dream replacement for El Ghazi, should the Dutch winger leave to join Roma in the coming weeks. This is why Lange must sanction a swoop for Correa to bolster Dean Smith’s squad.

Former Rangers player Michael Ball believes that Rangers would like to bring Heerenveen’s Joey Veerman to Ibrox this summer.

Veerman has been subject of speculation linking him with a move away from the Dutch club, with Rangers and Feyenoord amongst the clubs interested in signing him this summer.

The Scottish Sun reported that Rangers have been given renewed hope in their pursuit of Veerman, as the report suggests that Heerenveen have rejected Feyenoord’s cash-plus-player offer.

It’s thought Heerenveen are looking for around £8m, with Ball believing that Veerman would excite the Rangers fans and that the club want to bring him to Ibrox.

“I think Rangers would like to bring him in, he seems a very exciting player that the Rangers fans would love to see, and I hope that move does happen for the club and for Joey.

“Then if he gets his move to Rangers, the history they have of signing Dutch players, I’m sure that will get him into the Dutch national squad and develop his career further,” Ball told Football FanCast.

Rangers began the defence of their Scottish Premiership title in style at the weekend, as they ran out 3-0 winners against Livingston, with new signing Fashion Sakala starting and playing 71 minutes and other new signing John Lundstram coming off the bench in the second half.

It also looks like Steven Gerrard is close to adding another target to his side, as the Daily Record reported that Rangers are closing in on signing Juan Alegria from FC Honka.

Sheffield United and Arsenal have failed to agree a deal for goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, according to The Athletic.

What’s the story?

Arsenal’s interest in signing Ramsdale had been well-documented, with football.london recently claiming that the Gunners were closing in on a deal to sign the Blades shot-stopper.

But The Atheltic have now revealed that any potential move is on the verge of breaking down, as both Arsenal and Sheffield United can’t agree on a fee for the 23-year-old.

The Sun’s Tom Barclay has also reported that Ramsdale is ‘gutted’ over the breakdown in talks over the potential move to the Emirates Stadium for the England international this summer.

Sheffield United are set to take on Swansea City on Saturday evening, and it remains to be seen as to whether Ramsdale will feature in Slavisa Jokanovic’s starting XI for that clash at the Liberty Stadium, with Michael Verrips starting ahead of him for their EFL Cup clash against League Two side Carlisle United in midweek.

‘Incredible’

Ramsdale was one of the few Sheffield United players to come away with much credit to their name in the 2020/21 season, as the Blades were relegated from the Premier League.

The goalkeeper had an average Whoscored rating of 6.55 from the 2020/21 campaign, which put him seventh in the list of Sheffield United’s best performers from that frustrating season.

The goalkeeper has been a long-term transfer target for Arsenal, as they looked to provide much-needed competition for Bernd Leno between the posts heading into the new league campaign.

At the age of 23, Ramsdale could have been the ideal person to do just that, with the shot-stopper having experience of playing in the Premier League to a relatively high standard.

It’s not a fair reflection to judge Ramsdale’s performances when the rest of his Sheffield United teammates struggled throughout last term, in what was a forgetful year for the Bramall Lane faithful.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has previously praised the efforts of Ramsdale, and felt as though he played an ‘incredible’ game for the Blades when they faced the Reds.

“We arrive pretty much alone with the goalie but Ramsdale played an incredible game, few outstanding saves.”

Sheffield United’s supporters will be buzzing over this update on Ramsdale’s future at the club, as he could go on to play a key role in their bid for promotion back into the Premier League at the first time of asking this term.

However, with The Sun’s Tom Barclay claiming that he’s not pleased with a move to Arsenal materialising, Jokanovic will have to put his arm around the 23-year-old, and convince him to play his part for the Blades this term, as he’s far too good of an option to have sat on the substitutes bench.

Aquele tinha tudo para ser o ano do Flamengo. Comemorava o centenário, montou um time espetacular com o melhor do mundo Romário , tinha Vanderlei Luxemburgo, o técnico mais incensado do Brasil naquele momento (e Rubro-Negro declarado) e já havia vencido a Taça Guanabara. Naquela
rodada final, bastava um empate contra o Fluminense que era bom, mas, como todos falavam, era o patinho feio para que o caneco mais esperado pela
torcida para festejar os 100 anos fosse para a Gávea.

Só que o Fluminense colocou o coração na chuteira, abriu 2 a 0 no primeiro tempo e descontrolou o Flamengo, que só foi voltar ao jogo quando Romário inventou um gol aos 26 da etapa final. Após este gol, a torcida do Fla empurrou o time e o que se viu foi um massacre. Fabinho empatou, outras chances foram
criadas, o Flu teve Lira expulso.

O empate estava ótimo mas a vitória era iminente. Até que Renato completou de barriga a jogada espetacular de Ailton em cima de Charles Guerreiro. Este título nenhum tricolor esquecerá.

Qual é a dimensão que a superação do título carioca de 1995 trouxe para a história do Fluminense?

Foi uma conquista especial. Nós éramos o “patinho feio”, o time que vinha de um jejum de nove anos, que começou mal na competição. E, além disto, vem a história fantástica daquele Fla-Flu, na qual a gente faz 2 a 0, tem um segundo tempo atípico, toma dois gols e perde quase toda a zaga. Aquele gol do título pareceu um milagre. Com 42 minutos, a torcida do Flamengo gritava “é campeão” e os tricolores saindo, acho que Deus pensou: “Peraí, esses caras sofreram para c…, vou deixar que eles ganhem” (risos).

E como crê que o Flu teve forças para ir à frente e tentar a vitória?

Por tudo o que passamos, a única coisa que a gente tinha a fazer era acreditar até o final. Inclusive, este foi um dos temas que o Joel (Santana) usou na preleção. De que, independentemente do que acontecesse, a gente lutasse até o apito do juiz.

Em que o trabalho Joel Santana pesou para esta conquista?

Em tudo. O Joel é um dos maiores treinadores com quem trabalhei na
minha carreira. É um cara que, tanto dentro quanto fora de campo, ajudou
os jogadores a batalhar, especialmente para ter esta reação.

Em que o Flamengo pecou para deixar escapar o título naquele jogo final?

O time entrou devagar, achando que ganharia a qualquer momento. O Flu entrou com mais entusiasmo, foi eficiente e fez 2 a 0. No segundo tempo, voltamos com tudo empatamos, mas teve aquela barriga infeliz.

Como foi o baque de ser expulso naquele momento em que o Flamengo buscava a reação?

Foi expulsão boba. No lance do gol do Romário, fui buscar a bola e aí discuti
com o Sorlei e fomos para fora. Foi ansiedade, a gente estava perdendo o
jogo naquela hora.

O que guarda daquele período do Flamengo?

Ambiente bom, sinto saudade. Era o ano do centenário. O nosso plantel tinha tudo para ganhar o Carioca, mas não deu, assim como perdemos outros títulos. Mesmo assim, ficaram as lembranças dos companheiros.

O Flamengo iniciou o ano posando de favorito. O presidente Kleber Leite trouxe Romário da Espanha e garantiu que o clube estava pronto para vencer todos os títulos do ano do seu centenário. Ganhou a Taça Guanabara, mas perdeu praticamente todas as batalhas em outras frentes, em especial contra o Fluminense.

Não é exagero afirmar que a conquista do Estadual de 1995 pelo Fluminense surpreendeu, em especial pelo time não ter ponto extra no Octogonal Final,
e o Flamengo ter três. Por coincidência, a tabela marcou o Fla-Flu para a última rodada. Um empate daria o título ao Rubro-Negro.

O tricolor fez 2 a 0 na etapa inicial, mas permitiu a igualdade a 12 minutos do fim. Lira foi expulso, e o Fluminense ficou com dois a menos.O Flamengo pôs a mão na taça, mas não conseguiu segurá-la.

Aos 41 minutos, Aílton, rejeitado por Kleber Leite no começo do ano, driblou Charles duas vezes na direita e chutou com raiva. A bola iria para fora, mas bateu na barriga de Renato Gaúcho, em gol que pôs fim a nove anos de sofrimento, e impediu rubro-negros de ganharem desejado título no centenário.

This was another day when the players came and went between showers, but Smith ploughed on, reprieved by Jimmy Ormond who put him down in the slips when he was on 166. On a pitch which remained good, Scott Newman, who had been off the field with a knee injury, struck a brisk 67 to add to his first-day hundred, and then Jonathan Batty and Usman Afzaal gave Surrey a chance of salvaging a draw with an unbeaten fourth-wicket stand of 59 before a premature close. With Darren Pattinson called up at Leeds, Steve Harmison and Liam Plunkett hardly put pressure on him. Harmison was smacked for 73 in 13 overs while Plunkett shipped 29 in two.Kent were left on the brink of a thumping defeat as they closed on 163 for 6 chasing a distant target of 463 at Taunton. Somerset had extended their second innings to 243 for 8, with Justin Langer finishing on 88, when they declared at lunch. Kent, without Robert Key who was absent attending the birth of his son, lost three wickets in an afternoon shorted by rain, and in the final session top scorer Martin van Jaarsveld gloved an attempted hook as the players trotted on and off. With the forecast tomorrow much improved, Somerset could go top, albeit briefly, if the wrap up the game quickly.Hampshire were also staring defeat in the face after they closed on 127 for 7 in their second innings at Arundel, still 42 runs short of making Sussex bat again. Greg Lamb (54) led some spirited resistance at the end of Hampshire’s first innings as their last four wickets added 126, but following-on 163 in arrears, none of their batsmen looked like playing the necessary anchor innings. Ollie Rayner made the most of Mushtaq Ahmed’s absence to pick up 4 for 49. The temperature was raised early on when Lamb refused to walk for a catch Chris Adams claimed at slip and the umpires were unable to confirm the catch. Adams simmered for an over before engaging in a row with non striker Nic Pothas, prompting the officials to intervene.Middlesex struggled to gain a foothold at a dank Uxbridge where the players spent more time in the pavilion that out in the middle. In what action there was, Warwickshire dominated, taking the last seven Middlesex first-innings wickets for 75.
