Derby could receive Will Hughes windfall

Derby County could benefit from Will Hughes’ potential move to Crystal Palace this summer, due to a sell-on clause when he left the Rams.

The Lowdown: Hughes could join Palace

The 26-year-old made a name for himself at Derby as a youngster, scoring 12 goals in 189 appearances and looking a class act in midfield.

He eventually departed for Watford back in 2017 and is now being linked with a summer move to Palace, with new Eagles manager Patrick Vieira eyeing him up after he rejected the offer of a new deal at Vicarage Road.

The Latest: Derby could be boosted by transfer windfall

It turns out that Hughes’ potential move to Selhurst Park could work in Derby’s favour, with The Derby Telegraph reporting that the Rams’ 15% sell-on clause for the midfielder could see them receive a ‘transfer windfall’.

Hughes moved to Watford for £5m four years ago, with the deal potentially rising to £9m if add-ons were triggered. If the latter figure is the eventual cost of any such transfer, the Rams could stand to earn a seven-figure fee due to the sell-on clause.

The Verdict: Financial boost for Rams

Derby find themselves in a tough period in their history both on and off the pitch – they sit 18th in the Championship table after two matches and have endured a horrendous few months in terms of the club’s finances – so this could be a welcome boost for them.

While the money they could receive for Hughes may not be overly substantial, it could help raise much-needed transfer funds for Wayne Rooney before the transfer window shuts, as they look to give themselves the best possible chance of enjoying a successful season.

Mahela's MCG and bad reviews

Dileep Premachandran rewinds the Plays of the day from the second day at the SSC

Every time Mahela Jayawardene walks out to bat at the SSC, a century seems assured © AFP
Two drops in a run ocean
Mahela Jayawardene needs no invitation to score at the SSC, where he already has more runs than many manage in an entire career. To drop him once then would be unfortunate. To do it twice could only be termed masochistic. When he was on 55, Dinesh Karthik failed to hold on to a bottom edge off Anil Kumble, and he had added 38 more when Karthik fluffed another opportunity, this time after a legbreak turned enough to take the outside edge. Kumble’s anguished yell said it all.Mahela’s MCG
Between 1928 and 1948, Sir Donald Bradman scored nine centuries in the 11 Tests he played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. This was Jayawardene’s 20th Test at this venue, and a single to wide mid-on gave him a share of that record. The last four times he’s walked out to bat here, he’s left the crease only after making a century. Even Bradman didn’t manage that.Sliding away
Malinda Warnapura had made just 55 when he miscued one from Zaheer Khan back down the pitch. At chest height, Zaheer fumbled but managed to hold on. It didn’t matter, because by then, a no-ball had been called. Replays showed that it was desperately close, with Zaheer’s foot landing on the line and then sliding over. Such are the margins that separate a good day from a leather hunt.Getting a bad review
We had to wait 45.4 overs for the first umpiring review. Harbhajan Singh, bowling round the wicket, got one to pitch on leg stump and straighten a touch to hit Warnapura on the pad. The third umpire, Rudi Koertzen, had enough replays to see, and after taking his advice and consulting Billy Doctrove as well, Mark Benson ruled in the batsman’s favour. Warnapura celebrated the reprieve with a superb stroke through cover.Flights of fancy
Harbhajan isn’t known for flighting the ball much, and when he gave it a go against Jayawardene, you realised why the flatter trajectory is probably wiser on a pitch such as this. Like a golfer going for a hook shot, he picked the ball up from outside off stump and sent it soaring over the boundary at wide long-on. Not a shabby way to bring up yet another half-century against India.Stand your ground
The new review system wasn’t quite India’s cup of Dilmah on the second day. Late in the evening, Zaheer Khan appealed successfully for a catch behind. Tillakaratne Dilshan stood his ground though, and after replays proved inconclusive, umpire Benson had no option but to reverse his decision.

Journalist doesn’t AVFC completing another Southampton raid

Express and Star journalist Luke Hatfield doesn’t see Aston Villa signing James Ward-Prowse this summer.

Sky Sports reported earlier in the transfer window that the Saints had rejected a £25m bid from Villa for their club captain and the Telegraph reported last week [11th August] that both Aston Villa and Tottenham were preparing moves for Ward-Prowse.

Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl told the media in his pre-match press conference ahead of Southampton’s opening Premier League match: “Prowsey [James Ward-Prowse] is a guy who everybody wants to have, but I don’t see a scenario for him not to be with us for the next few years” [football.london].

Luke Hatfield also can’t see a deal taking Ward-Prowse to Villa Park happening, telling Transfer Tavern: “The James Ward-Prowse one is tough for them.

“I just think when you sign a player from a club, like you signed Danny Ings it’s never a good look to sign a second player from them and for Southampton as their club captain as well who’s got a lengthy deal, I just don’t see it happening now.

“I think it would take a really large amount of money to even get Southampton considering to sell, especially considering that Ings and Vestergaard have both gone.”

Aston Villa have already completed the signing of Danny Ings from Southampton this summer, with the Saints also seeing defender Jannik Vestergaard leave St. Marys for Leicester City.

Villa have had a brilliant summer transfer window, signing six players, with Ashley Young, Caleb Chukwuemeka, Axel Tuanzebe, Leon Bailey, Danny Ings and Emi Buendia all arriving at Villa Park.

PCB does not want Champions Trophy moved

The Pakistan Cricket Board is adamant the Champions Trophy will not be moved

The Pakistan Cricket Board is adamant the Champions Trophy will not be moved despite the real threat of teams pulling out of next month’s tournament. The ICC said in London on Tuesday the safety and security situation in the country was “satisfactory”, but before the announcement the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) said it would not be recommending its players attend the event.England, South Africa and New Zealand are also waiting to make a decision and the attitude of the countries has irritated the PCB. Shafqat Naghmi, the PCB’s chief operating officer, said he was “more than disappointed” by the position taken by Australia.”This has gone beyond logic,” Naghmi said in the . “Their position, I don’t understand — the ICC has determined that Pakistan is safe, they have various sources to judge the security measures in place.”If [Cricket Australia] has other security information which is negative, why don’t they share it with us? Why don’t they make us wise? They have not told us of any concerns, they have been dealing with the ICC. How come they are not willing to trust the ICC? Where are they getting their security information from? They won’t tell us, their security information is dubious.”Cricket Australia told the paper their findings were “distinctively unique” and specific to the Australian team. “There are also particular interpretations different organisations will make of the information,” a spokesman said.Cricket Australia’s position on Pakistan has not changed since the meeting with the ICC task force in Melbourne on Friday. They will wait for a decision from the ICC, which could come in Dubai on Wednesday, before making up their minds.Pakistan’s president Pervez Musharraf resigned on Monday and Heath Mills, the executive manager of the New Zealand players’ association, said the development added to the concerns. “The change may mean more assessments of the situation but time is running out to stage the event or move it elsewhere,” Mills said in the Press.Sri Lanka is the back-up venue for the tournament, but the PCB does not want a late switch. “It will not be moved from Pakistan,” Naghmi said.Australia consider Sri Lanka a safer touring option as there are no specific threats against them. “We’ve discussed this with the experts, who acknowledge that westerners are targets in Pakistan, whereas the biggest danger in Sri Lanka appears to be collateral damage,” Paul Marsh, the ACA chief executive, said in the Australian. “Certainly, we will need a detailed security assessment of Sri Lanka, should the tournament be moved there, before making any decisions.”

Stanford match to go ahead as scheduled

A “commercial agreement” between Stanford and Digicel has opened the way for the Stanford 20/20 for 20 match between the Stanford Superstars and England to go ahead

Tony Cozier09-Oct-2008A “commercial agreement”, reportedly finalised after a trans-Atlantic telephone conversation between Sir Allen Stanford and Denis O’Brien, head of Digicel, sponsors of West Indies cricket, has opened the way for the Stanford 20/20 for 20 match between the Stanford Superstars and England to go ahead. The agreement is to go before the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) directors for ratification when they meet in St Lucia today, clearing the way for go-ahead.A statement is expected after all the details have been finalised. But players of both teams were assured on Wednesday by Stanford officials that the Super Series of six matches, also involving warm-ups and a match between regional Stanford 20/20 champions, Trinidad and Tobago, and England Twenty20 Cup winners, Middlesex, for a US$400,000 purse, is still on.The tournament was thrown into doubt after the London Court of International Arbitration (LICA) upheld the objections of Digicel that the WICB had entered an agreement with Stanford that “wholly compromises the exclusive rights granted to Digicel as principal sponsors of West Indies cricket”.As it effectively rendered the agreement null and void, official recognition would be withdrawn from the match and it would be regarded by the ICC as an unauthorised, private event. As such, any players participating would open themselves to the same ban applied to those in the Indian Cricket League (ICL) that similarly lacks official recognition. The winner-takes-all extravaganza, promoted as the richest match in the history of the game, was announced by Stanford himself on behalf of his 20/20 board, the WICB and the England and Wales Cricket Board (WICB) at Lord’s on June 11.It is planned over five years with a US$20 million price tag each time – US$1 million each for players on the winning team, US$1 million to be shared between the reserve players and US$1 million between the support staff. The WICB and the ECB would each receive US$3.5 million annually.

Crossley would like to see Johnson stay at Forest this summer

Former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Mark Crossley hopes that Brennan Johnson stays at the City Ground this summer.

The 20-year-old has featured in all four of Forest’s opening Championship fixtures providing an assist for Lyle Taylor on the opening day of the season against Coventry.

The youngster spent last season out on loan at Lincoln City and was in fantastic form, scoring 13 goals and providing 14 assists and helped Lincoln reach the play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

His performances have captured the attention of Premier League newcomers Brentford but the Athletic reported that Brentford had been unsuccessful with their latest bid for the attacking midfielder and said that Forest value Johnson at around £10m, but the Bees’ bid fell considerably short of that figure.

Crossley hopes that Johnson stays at the City Ground, telling The Transfer Tavern: “I’d like to see him put pen to paper, sign a new deal. His career is more important moving forward rather than instantly going to a Premier League club where he probably wouldn’t play on a regular basis.

“I’d like to see him stay at Forest because I really like him, I think he’s an excellent talent and for Forest to do well they need to keep hold of the talent that they’ve actually got.”

With just a week to go in the transfer window, will Nottingham Forest be able to stave off interest in Johnson and keep him at the City Ground?
