At a press conference Hugh Morris, managing director of England Cricket, announces that Moores has been sackedKevin Pietersen has stepped down as England captain with immediate effect and Peter Moores has been sacked as coach after a tumultuous day for English cricket. Andrew Strauss has been named captain for the tour of West Indies later this month and the ECB will begin an immediate search for a new coach. However, Pietersen denied the reports which claimed he had resigned early on Wednesday morning and it was only after discussions with the ECB during the day that he felt his hand had been forced. “I wish to make it very clear that I did not resign as captain of the England cricket team this morning,” he said in a statement. “However, in light of recent communications with the ECB, and the unfortunate media stories and speculation that have subsequently appeared, I now consider that it would be extremely difficult for me to continue in my current position with the England cricket team.”Hugh Morris, the managing director of England Cricket, read a statement at a hastily arranged press conference at The Oval. “It’s been a complicated and difficult day. The ECB late this afternoon have accepted with regret the resignation of Kevin Pietersen as England captain.”Kevin recognised that in the present situation it was impossible to restore the dressing room unity, which is vital, if England are to win the forthcoming tour to the Caribbean, the ICC global events or regain the Ashes in the Ashes Test series.”Kevin Pietersen is highly valued as a senior and experienced player and we are delighted that he has indicated he wishes to continue to represent England in all their forthcoming international fixtures, starting in the Caribbean later this month.”The ECB were left in complete turmoil on a day of rumours, denials and high drama, following the emergency board meeting that took place on Tuesday evening to discuss the rift in the leadership of the team.In a brief statement on Wednesday afternoon, the ECB had insisted they had “no knowledge” of the departure of either Pietersen or Moores, although they admitted that Pietersen had not been prepared to tour West Indies under the current management structure.Pietersen, perhaps misjudging the mood of his employers, did not depart from his holiday in South Africa until Wednesday afternoon, by which time the 12-man board had already met, by teleconference, on Tuesday night. At that meeting, it was decided that the captain would have to pay the price for his attitude. It was felt that to accede to his demands would set a dangerous precedent for future disputes, one in which the whims of individuals would take precedence over structures. In response, it initially appeared that Pietersen had taken his future into his own hands, and handed back the role he took on from Michael Vaughan barely five months ago. At 9am GMT, Sky News reported his resignation, giving as his reasoning the fact that the ECB did not act quickly enough in responding to his demands over Moores’ future. Speaking briefly on the phone, Pietersen told the programme: “I am not in a fit state to talk.”Strauss, who captained England in 2006 when Vaughan was out of the team with injury, was the hot favourite to lead them on the tour of West Indies, which begins in exactly a fortnight’s time. His reappointment, two-and-a-half years after he was overlooked for the Ashes tour in favour of Andrew Flintoff, represents a remarkable turnaround for a player who, this time last year, was dropped from the Test side following a prolonged run of poor form.”Andrew Strauss has agreed to lead the team to the Caribbean,” Morris said. “He led the England team with distinction in 2006 when Michael Vaughan was injured.”Meanwhile, Moores’ departure comes as less of a surprise. His position became untenable following the revelations of the rift, and there had been little evidence of progress under his tenure and his credibility had been damaged beyond repair.”With regard to Peter Moores, the board determined that he should relinquish his role as England team director,” Morris added. “I have the greatest respect for the dignity which Peter Moores has shown in recent days when he has found himself under extreme pressure. The ECB wish him well in his future roles.”Cricinfo understands that Andy Flower, Moores’ assistant coach, was offered the interim role for the West Indies tour, although Morris said an announcement on the coaching set-up would be made in the coming days.Speaking to the News of the World earlier in the week, Pietersen said: “This situation is not healthy, we have to make sure it is settled as soon as possible and certainly before we fly off to the West Indies. Everybody has to have the same aims and pull in the same direction for the good of the England team.”Research conducted by Morris, however, suggested that Pietersen did not have the steadfast support of his team-mates or the back-room staff. The majority of the England support staff are understood to be supportive of Moores while most of the players are underwhelmed by Pietersen’s dramatic intervention, as Steve Harmison demonstrated with his ambivalent comments on Tuesday. There was also some sympathy towards Moores who, it is understood, was given the authority to select the England captain when Paul Collingwood and Vaughan resigned, and there are those within the set-up who feel that Pietersen had betrayed the coach’s trust.Attitudes towards Pietersen appeared to have hardened at board level. While few are completely convinced by Moores, they did not like the manner in which the captain has attempted to dictate events. As one board member told Cricinfo: “People who want to keep their jobs don’t issue ultimatums.”The news brings to an end a tumultuous five-month reign. When Pietersen took on the role in August 2008 following Vaughan’s resignation, he immediately declared that he intended to do the job “his way”. With a maiden Test triumph over South Africa, followed by a 4-0 victory in the ODIs, his way was the high way during a heady honeymoon period. But then came England’s disastrous showing in Allen Stanford’s 20/20 for 20 showdown in Antigua, in which England lost the chance to win US$1 million per man for a single evening’s work when they were bowled out by the Stanford Superstars for 99. Pietersen blamed the team’s performance on off-field “nonsense”, including floodlight issues and a high-profile faux pas involving the player’s wives, but there were no such ex cuses when England were subsequently thrashed 5-0 in their one-day series against India. That tour was foreshortened after the Mumbai terrorist attacks in November, and though Pietersen earned huge credit for his role in persuading the team to rejoin the tour for the two-match Test series, and for his remarkable century at Mohali, his tactical nous came under scrutiny during their 1-0 defeat, especially after the team failed to defend 387 in the first match at Chennai. But all throughout his tenure, rumours of his dissatisfaction with Moores’ methods were never far from the surface. Pietersen did not accept the job until he had had “clear the air” talks with Moores in the aftermath of Vaughan’s resignation, and he later voiced his disapproval of Moores’ dogmatic training methods that sapped the team’s energy on their tour of New Zealand in March. Matters are believed to have come to a head in the lead-up to the Mohali Test, where the relationship between Pietersen and Moores reached the point of no return.Although Kent’s coach, Graham Ford, had been touted as Moores’ probable successor, his candidature had been raised with a view to finding a man who could work alongside Pietersen. Ashley Giles is another option, although Warwickshire have warned they may not necessarily keep his job as the county’s director of cricket open, should he be asked to fulfil a role as “stop-gap” coach in the Caribbean.

We did well to keep them under 300 – Ntini

As Hayden trudged off the MCG, his favourite venue, it seemed increasingly likely that his days at the top of the order were running out, despite his declaration during the week that he had no retirement plans yet

Makhaya Ntini is not the man Matthew Hayden wants to be facing while trying to justify extending his career. When Ntini collected Hayden for 8 it was the ninth time he had picked him up in the 11 Tests they have played against each other. No bowler has taken Hayden’s wicket more times and no batsman has been dismissed by Ntini more often. It was a smart piece of thinking from Ntini, who was coming around the wicket, to lure Hayden into driving a ball that had some width and moved away a fraction. Hayden had been conscientiously leaving deliveries outside off but temptation got the better of him and histhickish edge flew to gully. It was a similar dismissal to the first innings in Perth, when Ntini angled the ball in to Hayden and nipped it away to catch the edge.As Hayden trudged off the MCG, his favourite venue, it seemedincreasingly likely that his days at the top of the order were runningout, despite his declaration during the week that he had no retirementplans yet. In Ntini’s previous over Hayden had driven handsomely downthe ground and Ntini said it showed there was a fine line between formand failure.”He’s hitting the ball very well, if you bowl like I did a bit full,”Ntini said. “Cricket has ways of … showing your downfalls, if you getfrustrated very quickly, those kinds of things are easy to show. Butif you are a hard-working person … you never know. He might come outin the second innings and score a hundred.”The early departure of Hayden brought Ricky Ponting to the creasesooner than he would have liked for the umpteenth time in the past fewmonths. Ponting has insisted all along that Hayden is striking theball well and while there are momentary glimpses of his best, thevisions are being cut short too often for an opening batsman to holdhis place indefinitely.”His results are [a worry],” Ponting said. “The way he started thismorning, he looked particularly sharp. He hasn’t got the runs that hewould have hoped for and that we would have hoped for. He’ll getanother opportunity in the second innings and then hopefully he cangrab hold of that one with both hands and make a big score.”What Hayden really needed was an attractive century, just like the onePonting delivered. His 101 was fluent but he was the only batsman whopicked up the pace of a pitch that was not offering as much bounce asexpected. Michael Clarke went to stumps on an agonising but important36 from 157 balls and Ponting said 6 for 280, on such a difficultsurface, was a good result.”We’ve had a reasonable day today I think,” Ponting said. “It’s prettyhard to gauge who’s come out on top today because the outfield as yousaw was reasonably slow so 280 to us is probably worth a bit over 300today I’d imagine.”It sounded like he was trying to convince himself as much as anyone. The loss of Brad Haddin in the penultimate over, caught at slip offNtini, gave South Africa the edge. It was a pleasing outcome for thevisitors on a day when some of their bowlers, particularly MorneMorkel, struggled to find the right length.”We had to put in a lot of hard work today because the heavy outfieldmakes a huge difference,” Ntini said. “As a batting side you alwayswant to make sure that on the first day you have to pass 300. So forus I should say we’ve done very well not to let them pass 300 on thefirst day. We will take that day as a job well done.”

Nuno confirms Dier did not travel to play Rennes

After an injury blow sustained in the 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace at the weekend, Tottenham Hotspur boss Nuno Espirito Santo has confirmed more news on defender Eric Dier.

The Lowdown: Dier limps off…

The England international picked up a ‘really bad dead leg’ at Selhurst Park last weekend according to reliable reporter Alasdair Gold, prompting Nuno to replace him with Joe Rodon just 12 minutes into the encounter (BBC).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news-2/” title=”Spurs latest news…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Since then, Spurs have been sweating on the fitness of Dier as they also prepare for a mouth-watering London derby clash at the weekend against fierce rivals Chelsea.

Now, Nuno has confirmed some news on the 27-year-old ahead of tonight’s Europa Conference League clash with Rennes.

The Latest: Nuno confirms team news…

Speaking to football.london, Nuno has come out and revealed that Dier did not travel with the squad to France and will miss this evening’s group stage encounter as a result.

“I can tell you the players that did not travel,” the Portuguese explained to the press.

“Son did not travel, Dier did not travel and Sessegnon did not travel. That’s the team news.”

The Verdict: Blow for Spurs?

While it is currently unconfirmed whether the 45-cap ace will be fit for Chelsea, Spurs will certainly be hoping so judging by his start to the season.

He has been called ‘excellent’ for his campaign so far by figures in the media and even managed a nomination for August’s Premier League Player of the Month award.

Of course, with the international break wreaking havoc on Nuno’s options in the heart of defence, Dier’s return as soon as possible could be absolutely crucial.

'I really did not expect it' – Duminy

JP Duminy, the South African batsman, has admitted his initial reaction to being bought for US$ 950,000, which is more than thrice his base price, was one of utter shock

JP Duminy, the South African batsman, has admitted his initial reaction to being bought for US$ 950,000, which is more than thrice his base price, was one of utter shock. Duminy, who was picked up by the Mumbai Indians after a fierce bout of bidding in Goa on Friday morning, said he did not know what to expect in the build-up to the auction.”It is still difficult to believe. To be honest, my expectations were just to get a contract,” he told reporters in South Africa. “The pressure is going to be there, after they paid that amount of money. But I back myself to perform under that pressure. I put myself under quite a lot of pressure to perform in Australia, especially in the one day series. I had an iffish one day series in England and wanted to show what I could do at this level.”Duminy made a mark on his Test debut in December, hitting an unbeaten half-century to help AB de Villiers take South Africa to a record win in Perth. The 24-year-old left-hander followed that up with a 166 in Melbourne to give his team the series. He also scored 78 and an unbeaten 69 in the two Twenty20 internationals that followed, and averaged 58.33 in South Africa’s 4-1 ODI series win.Mickey Arthur, the South Africa coach, has admitted that he is “absolutely over the moon” for his team’s new middle-order star. Duminy “deserves every dollar” because of the hard work he has put into his game over the last year, Arthur said.”JP is a three-in-one player who has the ability to score very quickly, is a brilliant fielder and a useful bowler,” Arthur told Cricinfo. “He is also a level-headed and intelligent young cricketer. On top of that, he has just come off a great tour in Australia to put himself up on the shop window.”Arthur also attributed Duminy’s price tag to the fact that South African cricketers would be available for almost the entire duration of this IPL, unlike players from England and Australia. “JP had been identified quite early by the South African team management as a player for the future,” Arthur said. “We always had a plan for him, and that’s why we took him into the team and kept him there. Now, he is getting the fruits of all the hard labour.”Arthur admitted that there was also an element of luck involved in Duminy’s rise – he got to play against Australia only because Ashwell Prince got injured. “But he grabbed the opportunity with both hands,” he said. Vettori backs New Zealand names Daniel Vettori has expressed his pleasure that fellow New Zealand players Kyle Mills and Jesse Ryder have been bought by IPL franchises. “Kyle [Mills] has for the last 18 months just been outstanding so for him to get picked up is very pleasing and to go to Mumbai that will be a real challenge for him,” he said. “I’m pleased that it [support for Ryder] is there. I think it’ll make it a lot easier, a lot more comfortable for him. He’s quite a shy guy, Jesse, so for him to be lumped into a situation where he didn’t know anyone and not sure what’s expected of him, it may have been quite hard. Ross [Taylor] will be there and they’ve known each other for a long time so it’ll make the settling in process a lot easier for him.” Interestingly, Arthur has also coached Tyron Henderson – the other South African surprise with a winning bid of US$ 600,000 – during his stint with the Warriors and said the allrounder would be a “valuable player for such a tournament”.”Henderson is an unbelievably good death bowler,” Arthur said. “He is also a batter who likes to get on with the game. I would say he is an enforcer with the bat.” Henderson, however, cannot play for South Africa as he has opted for a Kolpak contract with Middlesex, and Arthur said that the team has “moved on without him”.”Its like winning the lottery,” was Henderson’s initial reaction. “I was just astonished, considering my base price was $100 000.”

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Zaha comments

Former Crystal Palace player Darren Ambrose shared a post on Twitter featuring comments from Wilfried Zaha on Sunday evening, and a number of Eagles fans have been interacting with the one-time midfielder on social media.

Zaha, who still has just under two years remaining on his Selhurst Park deal, netted his first goal of the season in the 3-0 win over Tottenham earlier this month.

That took the 28-year-old’s goal tally to 69, with the Ivorian in line to make his 400th appearance for the club in his next outing. Zaha has been tipped to spend the rest of his career at Selhurst Park, and he recently shared his love for the Palace support.

Ambrose posted these comments from the Ivorian winger on Twitter, with the Palace star hailing the Eagles faithful for their support through the good and the bad:

“I feel like they are the only fans that back you through absolutely everything. Even when you are in bad form, they remember your good performances. Winning a trophy for them would be massive.”

Palace fans react

Ambrose admitted that he agreed 100% with Zaha, with these Palace fans giving their thoughts in response. They were all quick to heap praise on the current Selhurst Park legend, with many sharing their ‘love’ for Zaha.
