Services players unhappy with poor accommodation

At a time when India’s international cricketers are increasingly feted, the plight of players in the domestic game doesn’t seem to have improved

Sriram Veera18-Feb-2009At a time when India’s international cricketers are increasingly feted, the plight of players in the domestic game doesn’t seem to have improved. Members of the Services team, currently playing the Vijay Hazare Trophy in Una district in Himachal Pradesh, have spoken to Cricinfo – on condition of anonymity – about the poor playing and staying conditions. While some of the problems are common to smalltown India, concerns over the playing conditions – which officials from the staging association concede to – should raise eyebrows given that this is the premier domestic one-day tournament. The problems for the Services squad began when they landed in Una on February 14 and found they had no place to stay – there was no hotel booked by the Una District Cricket Association (UDCA). “It was mismanagement,” Rajkumar, the general secretary, admitted. “We had asked for a hotel to be booked from February 13 but the hotel manager had booked it from February 15, so we had to shift the players to another hotel.”That, too, presented problems as the initial plan was to split up the squad into several hotels. Once the players refused, threatening to complain to the BCCI, they were put up in one hotel.”That hotel – where they are currently staying – is 15 km outside Una, and suffers frequent power cuts but doesn’t have a back-up generator. “The lights have gone out for the last two hours; it came in between and went again. And we have a game tomorrow,” one player said.At the ground, the Jawaharlal Navoday Vidhyalay Stadium, the outfield was bumpy, the make-shift sightscreen – made from tent material – collapsed during the first game against Himachal Pradesh, leading to a 20-minute disruption in play, and the dressing rooms too were tents, partitioned for the two teams. “It was horrible,” a Services player said. “It was like we had gone to some village to play cricket. We don’t feel that we are playing in a BCCI-sponsored tournament. Someone can get badly hurt on this ground.”The UDCA said it had to use this ground as the Amtar ground at Navdaung was not ready in time. Daljit Singh, head of the BCCI’s Ground and Pitches Committee, made two visits to Amtar before the tournament, and eventually asked the local association to shift the games. There are three grounds in the area and Singh said the tight schedule didn’t leave them with any other option but to include the Una ground on the schedule.”There were15 matches to be played in eight days,” Singh said. “So there was no other option but to play in Navoday Vidhyalay also. Five games in each of the three grounds. I made sure the pitch would be good for the game; we had the equipment shifted out of Dharamsala and it was done. Unfortunately, the outfield was poor and things couldn’t be changed overnight in this hilly area by the local authorities.”He said he would return to Una on Thursday to re-assess the conditions. “I had told them that since it was their problem and responsibility, the local team, Himachal Pradesh, should take the onus of playing more games on this ground.”Meanwhile, more trouble broke out in the ground. BCCI stipulates that every domestic game should be recorded on camera but they couldn’t do it in the first game. The administrators didn’t realise that they had to erect 15-feet structures around the ground for the cameras to be placed. “We didn’t know what exactly was required from the camera people,” Rajkumar said. “But we did it after the first game and the next game was recorded.”

Tavernier’s value has soared since RFC move

James Tavernier joined Rangers from Wigan in 2015 for a reported fee of just £225,000 and has gone on to enjoy a sublime career in Scotland to date.

The right-back began his career in England with Newcastle and spent time with Bristol City, Sheffield Wednesday and Wigan, amongst others, before finally settling down and finding a home at Ibrox.

As of today (2 October), Tavernier has amassed 301 appearances for Rangers, scoring 66 goals and setting up a further 94.

Players experience peaks and troughs throughout their careers and Tavernier was no exception. His market value on Transfermarkt rose from £360k in 2015 to £5.4m in February 2020, steadily climbing over the five years in between as he became a regular at Rangers.

He then experienced a low point as his form dipped and his value followed. In April 2020, his price dropped down to £4.35m – the lowest it had been since January 2019 (£1.80m).

In the 2019/20 campaign, Tavernier played 10 games in the Europa League for Rangers and was only able to provide one assist, with zero goals, from right-back. He was also dribbled past once per game, whilst only making 0.5 interceptions per match, and lost 50% of his duels. This suggests that he was not strong enough to dominate opposition players, whilst he also gave the ball away 240 times in those 10 matches, which may have contributed to his value dropping to £4.35m that season.

His form in the competition improved in the following season. He played seven times in the 2020/21 Europa League and provided two goals and one assist. Tavernier won 54% of his duels and made 1.3 interceptions per game, whilst only being dribbled past 0.6 times per match, losing the ball 17.6 times per game instead of 24.

Meanwhile, Tavernier’s Premiership form was outstanding in the 2020/21 campaign. He averaged a sensational SofaScore rating of 7.70 as he managed 12 goals and nine assists from right-back, showcasing the quality he can provide from defence.

Steven Gerrard was able to use his man management skills and coaching to improve Tavernier’s game and get him playing his best football after a difficult period. It could have been easy for the head coach to discard the defender after that rough patch in 2020 and sign a replacement in the summer transfer window to take his spot.

Instead, he kept faith in Tavernier and now he is being rewarded by the 29-year-old. As of the start of October, Transfermarkt value him at £7.2m. This is a 33.3% increase from February 2020, showing how Gerrard has been able to help the right-back soar in the space of less than two years, bouncing back quickly from his poor form. It has been a masterclass in management from Gerrard, and hopefully Tavernier will continue to perform on the pitch.

Roberts says Spurs miss Eriksen

Graham Roberts believes Tottenham miss Christian Eriksen after the Denmark international moved to Inter Milan in January of 2020.

The Lowdown: Eriksen departure

Eriksen made the move to Spurs from Ajax in 2013 and ended up becoming one of the side’s best players, scoring 69 goals and providing 90 assists in 305 games (Transfermarkt).

However, he made it clear he wanted to depart, and moved to Inter in January 2020.

The Latest: Roberts thinks Spurs miss Eriksen

On Twitter, a Spurs fan said the club miss Eriksen.

Roberts answer was short but sweet and straight to the point. He simply said:

“Agree”

The Verdict: Never replaced

It is hard to disagree with this statement. After all, the £36m-valued 29-year-old (Transfermarkt) was an integral part of the side for seven years and even helped Spurs reach the Champions League final in 2019, which they ultimately lost to Liverpool 2-0 in Madrid.

It was after that match that he stated his desire to seek a new challenge (The Guardian).

Since then, things have not gone well for either. Spurs have only played one more Champions League campaign, while Eriksen has managed just eight goals in 60 games for Inter. Unfortunately, the Lilywhites fan favourite has not played since he suffered a cardiac arrest playing for Denmark this summer (Sky).

Perhaps a reunion of the two parties would not be the worst thing in the world if the playmaker’s health allows him to return to action.

In other news, this man has been urged to leave Tottenham.

Pakistan bounced back from the defeat to India by beating Sri Lanka in their second match at Canberra’s Manuka Oval. Sri Lanka kept tabs on Pakistan after they elected to bat, restricting them to 161, but were rocked in their chase by new-ball bowler Qanita Jalil. Shashikala Siriwardene propped up Sri Lanka’s sloppy chase with 58 but the slew of wickets all around her eventually told, and once she was dismissed the end was swift. It was Pakistan’s first-ever victory over Sri Lanka in 19 ODIs and also its maiden win in the World Cup after six straight defeats.”There is always a first time and I am glad that we ended our win drought in the World Cup and also against Sri Lanka,” Urooj Mumtaz, the Pakistan captain, said. “I wouldn’t like to make tall claims but we would aim and try to beat teams we have never beaten before.”Urooj said that Qanita Jalil and Sana Mir, who scored 22 and took two wickets, stood out for their contributions, saying that it was their responsible cricket that kept Pakistan in the hunt for a Super Six spot.Jalil took the first three wickets to fall, leaving Sri Lanka in trouble in the seventh over. A run-out and a wicket to Asmavia Iqbal made it 47 for 5, after which Siriwardene and the wicketkeeper Dilani Manodara (9 from 56 balls) started a slow fightback. But then Manodara was run out at 91 for 6, Sana Mir quickly snuffed out two wickets, and Siriwardene was run out. Sri Lanka’s last five wickets had fallen for just 13 runs. When Pakistan decided to bat, they were give a steady opening partnership of 47. Bismah Maroof was dismissed by Eshani Kaushalya in the 13th over, and the bowler also accounted for the other opener Nain Abibi, whose 26 from 51 balls was the highest score of the innings. Suwini de Alwis turned in a tidy outing, netting 2 for 19 from her ten overs, and it took an unbeaten 22 from Mir and a 20-ball 19 from Jalil to lift the scoring.”I am proud of my team. The way it lifted itself after Saturday’s game was magnificent,” said Mumtaz. “It was a complete team effort and every player played her role to perfection. The batters stayed at the wicket to ensure we played out 50 overs while the bowlers bowled straight and were excellently backed up by the fielders.””All in all, it was a performance to be proud of and couldn’t have come at a better time when we prepare to play England in the last group match. Our feet are still on ground as we know plenty of cricket still has to be played in the tournament and anything can happen.”Pakistan are third in the Group B points table and Sri Lanka are winless after two games.

Celtic pulled off masterstroke with Ajer

Celtic lost one of their stars in the summer as central defender Kristoffer Ajer departed Parkhead and the Hoops when he was sold to Premier League side Brentford.

After months of speculation, with reports of failed bids from Bayer Leverkusen and Norwich, Ajer sealed his permanent move to the London-based club and Australian head coach Ange Postecoglou lost a top player in the heart of his defence.

The Hoops landed Ajer from Norweigan side IK Start for a measly £540k in the summer of 2016 and he established himself as a regular starter over the years at Parkhead. He played 176 matches in all competitions for Celtic, scoring seven goals from centre-back and eventually earning himself his big-money switch to Brentford.

Last season, Ajer caught the eye with a series of impressive performances. He averaged an excellent SofaScore rating of 7.15 as he started 34 matches in the Premiership. Celtic kept 17 clean sheets in those games, with Ajer winning 62% of his duels on the pitch. That ensured he made 2.7 tackles and interceptions and 3.3 clearances per game.

The towering Norweigan also went through the entire campaign without committing a single recognised error leading to a shot or goal. This does not include penalties as one spot-kick given away was a small blot on an eye-catching season for Ajer.

Speaking in 2020, Alex McLeish labeled Ajer “influential” and likened him to Liverpool colossus Virgil van Dijk. The ex-Villa coach told Football Insider:

“I go back to that St Johnstone game, you see sometimes when it’s not going for Celtic, and the game’s in its dying embers, and then all of a sudden you see Ajer striding up the pitch trying to inspire like Roy of the Rovers.

“Running from defence, augment the attack and then it leads to a goal – these are inspirational moments, and he is an inspirational, influential player for Celtic. Like Virgil van Dijk, he came to Celtic, and we all know what happened next.”

His superb form in the Premiership, highlighted by these comments and the aforementioned statistics, secured him his transfer to the Bees this summer. The Premier League side paid roughly £13.5m for his services, which shows that Celtic pulled off a transfer masterclass with the defender.

They bought a teenager centre-back with 61 matches of senior experience for £540k and developed him into a £13.5m player. This is a profit of almost £13m for five years of work behind the scenes on the training pitch and in games each week in the Premiership, sending a message to other young players who could see Ajer’s progress and want to go on a similar journey.

This means that Celtic made a healthy turnover on Ajer whilst potentially giving themselves a better chance of landing talented young players in the future. They could be given a boost in the transfer window as they can point to players like Ajer as examples of the excellent work they can do.
