Western Australia have embarked on an ambitious recruitment drive after a disappointing 2008-09 season that saw them finish fifth in the Sheffield Shield and Ford Ranger Cup competitions, and a lowly sixth in the Big Bash Twenty20 tournament. The WACA has approached five players from New South Wales, four of whom are fast bowlers, and at least one Queenslander as they look to overhaul their side for next season.Western Australia’s five New South Wales targets – Mark Cameron, Josh Hazlewood, Burt Cockley, Mitchell Starc and Usman Khawaja – are all under contract with the Blues for next season. Hazlewood, an 18-year-old fast bowler from rural New South Wales, is regarded among the top prospects in Australian cricket, and has previously been approached by Western Australia and Queensland. Cameron and Cockley, meanwhile, have been recruited to play in the IPL this year, while Khawaja is rated by many as a batsman of international potential.Western Australia is also understood to have expressed interest in a Queensland paceman – possibly Grant Sullivan or Ben Cutting – in a bid to bolster their fast bowling ranks. The WACA’s recruitment drive comes amid reports of possible tension between the coach, Tom Moody, and several players after a disappointing 2008-09 campaign.Several states are believed to be interested in Adam Voges and Luke Ronchi, both of whom underwhelmed for the Warriors last season. However, the two have outlined their preference to remain in Perth. Ronchi, who made his one-day and Twenty20 international debut during Australia’s 2008 tour of the Caribbean, was dropped from the Western Australia first XI towards the end of last season, while Voges averaged just 22.72 in 10 first-class matches in 2008-09. Voges recently stood down from Australia’s one-day tour of South Africa after it conflicted with his wedding plans.Meanwhile, New South Wales are close to finalising their acquisition of Shane Watson from Queensland. Watson, the Australian allrounder, will move to Sydney to be closer to his partner.

-Fui no Burger King (risos).

A promessa corintiana respondeu.

Gary Kirsten has denied he is on the “very short shortlist” of candidates for the England coach’s job. Kirsten has been linked to the role in the British papers but he told he has not been contacted by the ECB.”I am not a candidate,” he said in Wellington where he is preparing the side for the third Test. Kirsten’s two-year contract with India began in March 2008 and Ratnakar Shetty, the BCCI’s chief administrative officer, said “His contract is till March 2010”. N Srinivasan, the BCCI’s secretary, refused to comment on the reports and dismissed them as “speculation by the UK media”.Andy Flower, who is currently the stand-in coach after the sacking of Peter Moores in January, remained the favourite to be appointed as England’s new director of cricket, the and the reported. The reports claimed that a four-man ECB panel would interview the candidates on the shortlist at a secret location in the UK. Mickey Arthur, the South Africa coach, was also linked to the process though he said that he remained committed to his national contract till 2011.”We have had a robust and transparent process,” Hugh Morris, managing director of England cricket, told reporters in St Lucia yesterday. “We are pleased with those who have applied. Our interview process will begin when we get home at the weekend with a view to appointing the permanent post before the West Indies series.”Significantly, Morris said that he was impressed with the way Flower managed his role after he took over in diffcult circumstances, following the removal of Moores and Kevin Pietersen as captain. “He has taken the challenges on board, gained the respect of players and management team and done really well,” he said.

Benitez rules out Everton to Newcastle move

A number of Everton fans have been left gushing over some news involving Rafael Benitez.

As per The Northern Echo, the Spaniard has now ruled out walking from his job at Goodison Park to go and manage one of his former clubs in Newcastle United, believing that it would be wrong to turn his back on the Toffees even though he retains a strong affinity to the Magpies.

This comes after a report emerged that the new owners at St James’ Park were plotting a move to get him back in charge after the takeover by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium was completed.

Benitez only took charge of the Toffees in the summer after the departure of Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid and has started off well, with Everton currently sitting fifth in the Premier League.

Reports that he has now ruled himself out of joining a top-flight rival have unsurprisingly been met with delight by many Blues supporters.

– Tenho a mesma confiança no Jailson e no Prass.

Flintoff returns home to undergo surgery

Andrew Flintoff has returned home from the Indian Premier League to undergo surgery on a torn meniscus in his right knee

Andrew Flintoff’s time with the Chennai Super Kings was all too brief. He will now miss England’s series against West Indies•AFP

Andrew Flintoff has returned home from the Indian Premier League to undergo surgery on a torn meniscus in his right knee.Flintoff had been appearing for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL when he felt discomfort in his right knee. The Chennai medical staff immediately contacted ECB’s chief medical officer Dr Nick Peirce. Scans were taken of the right knee in a Durban hospital and they detected a slight medial meniscal tear and after these were viewed by Peirce it was decided that Flintoff should return to London. He will undergo an operation early next week and surgeons are confident that he should recover from the keyhole surgery within three to five weeks.”Clearly this is a huge disappointment for both the player and the IPL team,” Peirce said. “This sort of degenerative injury though is one that could have happened at any time any where. The procedures we put in place meant that the ECB medical staff were alerted about the problem immediately and we thank Chennai for their co operation.”Hugh Morris, the ECB’s managing director of cricket, added: “Andrew has been extremely unlucky with injuries but if there is one saving grace it is that the injury has occurred now rather than on the eve of either the ICC World Twenty20 or the Ashes.”Having the surgery now means that Flintoff should be available for both those events although he is certain to miss the Test series against the West Indies.”Flintoff, who along with Kevin Pietersen commanded the highest auction price in IPL history earlier this year, endured a difficult few weeks since joining the Chennai franshise. His return of 0-50 against Delhi was the most expensive of any IPL bowler through Thursday, and his 1-44 against Mumbai barely better. In all, Flintoff claimed two wickets at 52.50 (and an economy rate of 9.54) in three games with the Super Kings. He fared better with the bat, averaging a respectable 31.00 at better than a run-a-ball in three inningsFlintoff’s torn knee meniscus represents the second major injury to befall a veteran Chennai Super Kings player in as many seasons. Matthew Hayden tore an Achilles tendon during his four-game stint in the inaugural IPL, and was subsequently ruled out of Australia’s tour of the West Indies.

Postecoglou must unleash Dembele

With things appearing to be improving for Ange Postecoglou on a near-daily basis at Celtic in recent weeks, as the Bhoys’ form on the pitch has been drastically improving, as well as the club beginning to welcome back a number of their long-term absentees, there are plenty of positives at Parkhead at present.

However, one player who remains on the sidelines is 18-year-old Karamoko Dembele, with the winger revealing that he is set to remain out of action until the turn of the year due to recently undergoing surgery on an ankle fracture.

Despite this fact, when the teenager does eventually regain match fitness, it would appear extremely wise for the 56-year-old manager to place his trust in the teenager, as the forward is undoubtedly a player who could help revolutionise Celtic’s attack.

Indeed, despite having made a grand total of just eight first-team appearances for the club, there has nevertheless been a great deal of fanfare about the forward’s potential, with Ruud Gullit stating his belief that the England U18 international “looks pretty special”.

Meanwhile, French publication L’Equipe included Dembele in a 2019 list of wonderkids that also included Barcelona’s Ansu Fati and Inter Milan’s Sebastiano Esposito, dubbing the youngster an “extraordinary” talent.

It is easy to see why, as, having featured for Celtic U20s while just 13 years of age, the winger is a clearly player who possesses an incredible amount of ability, having already scored his first senior goal in a Celtic shirt in a 4-0 win over St Johnstone last season, as well as bagging the opener in a 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic in a pre-season friendly this summer.

As such, upon his return from injury, it would appear highly advisable for Postecoglou to start unleashing the £800-per-week 18-year-old in his starting XI on a regular basis. Not only would this be fantastic for the youngster’s development, but it would also undoubtedly aid Celtic’s creativity in the final third – something that has been lacking at times this season.

Sunderland: Johnson must axe Pritchard

Sunderland will be looking to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat to Charlton on Saturday as they travel away to face QPR in the League Cup on Tuesday.

The Black Cats succumbed to a loss at the weekend as Jayden Stockley scored the only goal for the Addicks, sending Sunderland down to fourth in the table.

They now have a chance to regain momentum and gain some confidence as they face a Championship side in QPR, with the chance of progressing through to the fifth round of the competition.

Lee Johnson could make some changes to his team to freshen the team up and give other players a chance to show that they deserve to start in the league. As part of this, one player he must ruthlessly axe from the team is attacking midfielder Alex Pritchard.

The former Huddersfield and Norwich playmaker recorded the joint-lowest SofaScore rating (6.4) for Sunderland against Charlton as turned in a worrying display in midfield. Per the same source, he lost 85.7% (6/7) of his duels on the pitch, whilst failing to make a single tackle, interception, block or clearance.

This shows that he was a lightweight in his 50/50 battles and did not put the hard work in defensively to win possession back and get his side back on the front foot.

On the ball, he was inconsistent. Via SofaScore, he created three chances for his teammates as he showed off his quality to open up defences in the final third. However, he also had a dribble success rate of 0% and gave possession away 20 times from 52 touches, whilst also completing three of his eight attempted crosses and long balls.

Therefore, he was not able to prove that he can be reliable off the ball or on the ball. Despite showing flashes of quality, the overall standard of his performance was not good enough and that was reflected in the final score as Charlton won the match.

Johnson must axe Pritchard from the XI for the encounter with QPR after proving himself to be a liability to the team, giving him the chance to get his head down in training and focus on next weekend’s League One game against Rotherham. Hopefully, it will fuel the fire inside the midfielder and encourage him to up his levels ahead of playing a starring role against the Millers.
