Spurs fans split over Alderweireld update

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has claimed that he expects to stay at the club this summer, per Sport360 via the London Evening Standard, leaving fans with mixed feelings.

The defender has a £25million release clause in his contract that can be activated this summer.

With his current deal expiring at the end of next season, there has been much discussion over his future, with many Spurs fans expecting him to depart in this transfer window.

But he has now hinted that he could still be a Tottenham player in 2019-20.

He said: “I’m going to say the same thing that I’ve been saying for the past couple of years.

“The only focus is Spurs, because of this focus I think I had a good season as well. I have one year left on my contract, so in my head, I will play for Spurs next season.”

Alderweireld has played a key role in Spurs’ season, making 49 appearances in all competitions as Mauricio Pochettino’s men finished in the Premier League top four and reached the Champions League final.

He will likely bring up the half-century on Saturday in Madrid, when Spurs take on Liverpool as they bid to win the trophy for the first time in their history.

But fans remain split over whether or not he will stay at the club; with some believing he will simply leave on a free transfer next summer and others believing it is a sign that he intends to extend his current contract.

Celtic: Another treble may beckon should Patrick Roberts make long-awaited Hoops return

Celtic fans have cause to get excited in the coming days if this particular rumor can get off the ground. The Bhoys will still be suffering from sore heads from their treble-treble celebrations this weekend, but they have the consoling good news of transfer links in The Sun claiming their in the market for Patrick Roberts, their former livewire winger.

There is a twist to the tale, though, as Neil Lennon's Celtic will face competition for the winger from none other than Brendan Rodgers' Celtic. That won't be easy for the Hoops to come to terms with, but they should still be doing everything they can to secure the signing of Patrick Roberts, who has already spent two seasons with the Hoops in their first and second treble-winning season.

It wouldn't be too hard to convince the wide-man to sign again either. The season just gone has seen the young £4.5 million-rated ace, as per Transfermarkt, flop hard on-loan in La Liga with Girona, where he's managed just one assist and not a single goal in 21 appearances in all competitions. If the 22-year-old is targeting a quick return to form, there's only one place for it: Glasgow.

At his young age, Roberts can still go on to become a star and his numbers from his Celtic days prove that. In his two separate loan spells with the treble-treble winners beforehand the Manchester City man racked up 18 goals and 26 assists in his 78 appearances and if he returns to add to that then the Hoops can rest easy knowing that they'd be a little bit closer to securing fourth domestic treble.

Celtic fans, would you be happy with a move for Patrick Roberts? Let us know!

Rice reveals he wants to remain at West Ham

[ad_pod ]

Declan Rice insists he is focused on staying at West Ham United this summer, per The Guardian.

What’s the word?

The midfielder has been routinely linked with a move away from the Hammers, with both Manchester United and Manchester City touted as potential suitors.

He has enjoyed a breakthrough season under Manuel Pellegrini, after all, playing a total of 38 times in all competitions and earning a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Nations League finals.

And he maintains that he is content with his lot at West Ham, having signed a new contract in December.

He said: “I know that there’s speculation but I signed a five-year contract with West Ham during the season.

“So my focus is fully on playing for West Ham. I’ve got a great connection with the fans; the fans love me and I love them and that’s the way it is at the moment. I’m not thinking about anything else, for sure.”

A legend-in-the-making

Rice could become a Hammers legend if he remains at the club for the duration of his career.

He is already seen as perhaps the best young player to play for the club since the days of Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand.

And, yes, he could well earn himself a massive move to a Manchester club or potentially a big foreign side.

But we’ve seen how revered the likes of Mark Noble and his ilk are at the Hammers; he has committed himself to the club and become an icon in the process.

Rice could do the same; he’s well on the way given how much supporters adore him.

It is down to him to ensure he enters the pantheon of the greats.

The Chalkboard: Celtic is the best place for Kristoffer Ajer’s development

[ad_pod ]

Norway manager Lars Lagerback reckons the development of Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer could be hastened if he left to play in a bigger league, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

This has been a real breakthrough season for the Norwegian international at the Hoops and fans are excited about his future at Celtic Park.

Lagerback’s key consideration though is the improvement of the player regardless of which club he plays for and his comments on Ajer this week are very intriguing.

As quoted by the paper, the 70-year-old said of the Celtic defender:

I don’t think the Scottish League inhibits his development, but it’s fair to say if he became a regular starter at a higher level, it would probably speed it up.

The harder the level you are at, the more you have to be on your toes.

But to be fair, it’s about him being at a club where he gets playing time and Celtic do have Champions League matches every season so he is in a good environment.

I think he takes less risks than he used to in his game, but that comes with experience.

Watch a tribute to Celtic’s late Lisbon Lion and greatest ever captain, Billy McNeill in the video below…

The national boss was clearly diplomatic with his comments, but the suggestion that Ajer’s game might be better served with a move to a more competitive and illustrious league is an interesting one ahead of the summer transfer window.

Does his argument have merit?

On the chalkboard

Ajer only turned 21 in April and so is still right at the very beginnings of his career despite excellent experience both in the Norwegian and Scottish top-flights.

Making 45 appearances for the Hoops last term, he had his most impressive season to date, playing regularly for Celtic in a treble-winning campaign that also resulted in European football after Christmas.

The most important thing for the player right now is getting even more games under his belt as a centre-back, especially considering he only converted to the position from midfield a couple of years ago.

Realistically he is unlikely to be getting a regular game for teams in the top five European leagues who can also offer him that vital experience in continental competition, which is something Lagerback notes in his comments.

A move could in fact could be a hindrance to his development, rather than a benefit, and the players’ advisers are likely taking that into account when considering his future.

The player himself seems to be relishing his role at Celtic Park too. Happiness goes a long way.

His next personal goal should be cementing a spot in the defensive line as a first-choice pick rather than back-up.

The smart money would be on that happening next season and Ajer becoming an even better player for club and country in a year’s time.

Manchester United: It’s surely the end for Romelu Lukaku

Manchester United endured a rather bizarre season last time out, didn’t they? The emotions were tipped towards either jubilation or despair, with seemingly nothing in between.

While it remains to be seen how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will fair next season, we can now discuss the current crop of players and both the likely incomings and outgoings. With that in mind, one player who is certainly having his name thrown around is Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku.

The rumours have begun to spiral, with Gazzetta Dello Sport (via Daily Mail) now reporting that the forward has agreed personal terms with Inter Milan ahead of a proposed move. This comes only a matter of days after The Sun reported Lukaku had been told he was to be allowed to leave.

There certainly appears to be traction to this one, but perhaps we should have a closer look as to why. The Belgian signed for United in 2017 in an initial £75m deal, and while he looked to have instantly taken to life in Manchester, the forward has distinctly dropped off since.

Lukaku scored just 12 goals in 32 league games this season. Four less than his total of 16 last season, and less than half of his 25 scored during his last season at Goodison Park. His stats were certainly not aided by the fact he made 10 of his 32 appearances off the bench. Yet, there’s a reason he’s not starting.

The Belgian scored twice in United’s incredible 3-1 win away at PSG, but that was at the start of March. Amazingly, the forward actually failed to score a club goal for the rest of the season and those stats are simply not good enough.

Indeed, it’s not as if Marcus Rashford’s stats are much better, scoring 10 goals in 33 league games. Still, the England star did provide six assists, whereas Lukaku failed to register one. Rashford also (in the Premier League) had a higher pass completion rate, shots and dribbles per game, while also creating more key chances per game (stats via WhoScored).

The England international provided far more to the team than his Belgian counterpart, doing so while five years his junior. According to The Sun, Lukaku earns £225,000-a-week, which are pretty staggering figures, considering he has reportedly (per the Telegraph) fallen out of favour.

It seems Solskjaer favours Rashford, something seemingly unlikely to change over the summer. While Lukaku has not been a failure at United, it is perhaps time to move on as both parties look ahead to what is hopefully a brighter future.

Jarrod Bowen would offer Everton a more direct alternative to Theo Walcott

[ad_pod ]

According to an exclusive report from Football League World, Everton are interested in signing Hull City forward Jarrod Bowen.

Bowen built on an eye-catching 2017/18 campaign – in which he hit 14 goals – by notching eight more last term; his 22 Championship strikes helped the Tigers to a solid 13th place finish, 12 points adrift of a play-off spot.

Check out a fan’s outrageous call for England to take a leaf of out cricket and rugby’s book after a limp Nations League performance in the video below…

He has emerged as Hull’s talisman, and it would be a real blow for them if he was to leave this summer – even more so after the departure of Nigel Adkins. The aforementioned Football League World report states that Bowen will ‘definitely’ get his move away this summer, and that an unnamed Premier League side has already had an offer rejected.

If Bowen did arrive at Goodison Park, where would he fit into Marco Silva’s plans?

Firstly, the Englishman is a right-sided forward who prefers to play with the intention of troubling the opposition goalkeeper at the forefront of his mind, as the stats reinforce.

He would, in that case, arrive as competition for Theo Walcott on that flank – Bowen appeared 40 times on the right wing last term, whilst the former Arsenal man played 18 games out there not including his appearances from the bench.

Albeit in a league below, Bowen’s stats are far superior.

The 5 ft 9 attacker scored almost five times as many goals as Walcott managed and recorded double the amount of assists, but the finer details bolster the suggestion that Bowen is a more direct goal threat.

The former Hereford United man takes 2.5 shots per game compared to Walcott’s 1.2, which speaks volumes about how hard the 22-year-old tries to put the ball in the net compared to the England international.

Bowen also records almost double the amount of dribbles per game in comparison to the 30-year-old – taking the game to the opposition backline is clearly a priority of his when he steps foot out on to the pitch.

Walcott was a source of great frustration for the Everton supporters last season and fans rejoiced when it was reported that his future seemed uncertain, so if Bowen signed, they would at least be treated to a more exciting presence out on the right flank in 2019/20.

Kemar Roofe already gearing up for next season in motivational Instagram snap

[ad_pod ]

Kemar Roofe’s season at Leeds United was nothing short of sensational.

This 26-year-old forward has been tearing the Championship apart, and who knows what might have been had he not been injured and sidelined for two spells throughout the campaign. And what’s even more crucial to this story, he missed the second game against Derby County in which the Whites were stopped in their attempt at promotion to the Premier League.

But with that in mind, and with the mindset that he has to be fit and firing for next season after a troubled campaign, Roofe has already started his preparations for the new challenge and took to

Even though these waters of “what ifs” are always murky, Roofe’s tally of 14 goals and two assists in the 2018/19 Championship campaign does make you wonder whether he truly could’ve made a difference when it mattered the most.

Crystal Palace fans hit out at Steve Parish after Aaron Wan-Bissaka exit agreement

[ad_pod ]

BBC Sport journalist David Ornstein revealed on Wednesday that a deal had been agreed between Crystal Palace and Manchester United for the transfer of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but Eagles fans were left far from happy with chairman and owner Steve Parish at the details involved.

The Guardian reported on Monday that the south London outfit were keen to not only get a guaranteed £50m up front for the 21-year-old, but to also cancel or at least reduce the 25% sell-on clause in Wilfried Zaha’s contract.

However, Ornstein confirmed on Wednesday that the initial deal is worth £45m – which could rise to £50m with add-ons – while the Red Devils will retain their clause for the Ivory Coast international.

While it has to be seen as a decent agreement for Palace seeing as the player has only made 42 first-team appearances for them, many obviously feel that Parish should have stuck to his guns in negotiations.

Supporters have been quick to show their unhappiness with the 53-year-old on Twitter, with one saying “Parish has bottled it”, and another saying “Parish caved in and we lost”.

If Palace sell Wan Bissaka and Zaha, will they be in another relegation battle? One fan gives his opinion in the video below…

The pressure – perhaps at least from these fans – will now be on the hierarchy to ensure that the club spend the Wan-Bissaka money wisely in the remainder of the window.

Here is just a selection of the reaction from the popular social media platform…

Liverpool fans react as Raheem Sterling reveals reason behind Anfield departure

[ad_pod ]

One of the most bitter transfer sagas of recent years, Raheem Sterling’s protracted move to Manchester City back in the summer of 2015 certainly didn’t go down well on the red half of Merseyside.

The England international left Anfield in a £49m deal and the nature of his departure didn’t particularly endear him to the Reds faithful.

Now, in an interview with GQ magazine, Sterling has revealed that the reason behind leaving Liverpool was his failure to win the Premier League with them by the time he was 21.

The comments saw Reds fans take to Twitter, and many were understandably fuming over their former charge’s apparent lack of respect for the club.

Many seemed frustrated by Sterling’s words and questioned the winger’s arrogance at expecting to win the Premier League at such a young age.

Some however were keen to move on from the now Manchester City star and pointed out that Liverpool had won the Champions League under Jurgen Klopp last season, and wondered which side had made the real progression.
