Garnacho: Is this Man United’s new Ronaldo?

Manchester United have an exceptional talent on their hands in Alejandro Garnacho.

It’s been a tough decade for the Red Devils, but class is permanent and is clearly embedded into the roots of the club – as can be seen with their academy product portfolio.

Despite the emerging talents of youth players such as Hannibal Mejbri, Shola Shoretire, Anthony Elanga and Charlie McNeill – there is a bigger buzz around former Atletico Madrid prospect; Alejandro Garnacho.

The Manchester United youngster has achieved a cool 18 goal returns (12 goals, six assists) in 30 appearances that span from the U18s to the U23s in Premier League 2.

Despite not making a first-team appearance for the Red Devils, the 17-year-old was called up to the Argentina national team last month in what looked to be a bid to get the starlet to secure allegiance – with Garnacho also able to play for Spain having been born in Madrid and growing up there.

Garnacho was described by the Spanish media (via Playmakerstats.com) as the “jewel in the crown” of Atletico Madrid’s academy, though, that was until Manchester United beat several top European outfits to his signature.

The youngster has also been described as “rampant” by Manchester United themselves, after a performance against Stoke City in which he bagged a hat-trick in the U18s’ 6-1 win.

With his record healthy, his reputation growing, and the fact that he is 17-years-old plying his trade with the U23’s – the main hype around the starlet is his adoration and subsequent comparison to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Taking to Instagram, Garnacho has already stated: “Greatest of all times… @Cristiano” after the great Portuguese gave the youngster the match ball after hitting a hat-trick against Norwich City.

The United starlet has also been seen emulating Ronaldo’s “Siuu” celebration after netting in the academy whilst his deal with Nike is yet another resemblance of the famous attacker.

The fact that Garnacho has trained with both Lionel Messi and Ronaldo at the age of 17-years-old is incredible but he has earned the right to do so with his performances for the youth set-up.

His goal in the FA Youth Cup win over Wolverhampton Wanderers served as a fantastic example of his prowess as a player.

Ten Hag could instantly impress the fanbase by utilising the youngster in what looks to be a major rebuild for the club.

Rangers must sign Kiril Despodov

Gio van Bronckhorst was dealt a blow to his hopes of securing a major trophy for Rangers as his side lost 1-0 in their Europa League clash on Thursday.

The Gers now head into the second leg with a deficit to overturn and they remain six points behind their Glasgow arch-rivals in the Premiership table.

However, they are in the final of the Scottish Cup and are still in with a chance of winning three trophies in total before the end of the season.

Irrespective of how this campaign ends, Ross Wilson will surely be hard at work to improve Van Bronckhorst’s squad in the summer in an attempt to make sure that they are not trailing Celtic by so much in the title race next term.

In the January transfer window, the Gers were linked with a swoop for Ludogorets attacker Kiril Despodov, alongside Galatasaray and Olympiacos, and he is a player in whom the Ibrox sporting director must reignite his interest.

The 25-year-old has been in sublime form this season, with 10 goals and 18 assists in all competitions for his club, and he could be a fantastic signing for Rangers. Racking up 28 direct goal contributions is an incredible achievement by the flier, and it shows that he could solve a key issue for the Light Blues.

In the Premiership this season, no Gers winger has more than eight goals or seven assists. This suggests that Van Bronckhorst needs more firepower and creativity in the wide areas next season, and Despodov’s statistics suggest that he would be able to provide exactly that.

Journalist Josh Bunting hailed him as “really impressive” for Bulgaria against Croatia during the most recent international break, claiming that the 25-year-old was “making the pitch as wide as possible and driving at the full-backs”. He scored his country’s goal in that 2-1 defeat, with Rangers’ Borna Barisic playing for Croatia, before he was sent off for two bookable offences.

In seven World Cup 2022 qualifiers, Despodov scored two goals and provided two assists whilst creating three ‘big chances’ for his teammates. He has been able to stand out at international level, to go along with his domestic form, which suggests that he could adapt to playing in Scotland, having already scored against a team with Barisic in it.

Therefore, Wilson must now attempt to snap up the winger at the end of this season, as the player has the potential to be an excellent and much-needed addition to the Rangers squad after proving himself for Ludogorets and Bulgaria.

Rangers must unleash Calvin Bassey

Rangers turn their attention away from Premiership action for now as they face the prospect of a UEFA Europa League semi-final clash.

The Gers play in the first-leg of their last-four meeting tonight in Germany as they look to set up a tasty second-leg at Ibrox under the lights next week.

Gio van Bronckhorst’s men come into the game off the back of four straight wins in all competitions, beating Motherwell 3-1 in their last domestic outing.

In their Premiership victory last weekend, one player let themselves down as Leon Balogun was given his marching order by the referee in the 28th minute. Although the red card does not rule him out of this clash, Rangers need as much positive momentum as possible heading into this match and playing a player off the back of a low like that could be a mistake.

Therefore, van Bronckhorst must bring Calvin Bassey back into the starting XI to play next to Connor Goldson at the heart of the defence.

Leicester youth coach Steve Beaglehole previously dubbed him as “phenomenal” and that is exactly what he has been for the Gers since the Dutch head coach came through the door.

In the Premiership this term, he has averaged an impressive SofaScore rating of 6.95 and he has been rewarded for his form by winning the club’s Men’s Young Player of the Year award. He has shown that he can excel at left-back and centre-back and his versatility is another reason why he has been phenomenal for van Bronckhorst as he has been able to slot into multiple positions whilst maintaining a high standard of performance.

Journalist Josh Bunting has described his improvement this season as “ridiculous” as the £6.4k-per-week gem has gone from playing eight times in the league last term to 27 outings in the current campaign.

Bassey has also caught the eye in Europe with an average score of 6.91 in the competition. He has made 2.6 tackles and interceptions per game and won an impressive 70% of his ground duels – showing that he has been physically dominant for the Gers at the back.

The Nigerian brute has been a reliable, quality, player for van Bronckhorst in all competitions and that is why he must now be unleashed against RB Leipzig tonight. Balogun must be dropped after his red card and replaced by the 22-year-old, who has shown that he can put in excellent displays in the Europa League.

Newcastle transfer news on Bakker

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) Public Investment Fund (PIF) are reportedly now in ‘contact’ to sign Mitchel Bakker for Newcastle United this summer.

The Lowdown: January offer

It was reported back in the January transfer window that the St. James’ Park faithful were close to signing Bakker from Bayer Leverkusen after making an offer, but the deal hit a stumbling block.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-6/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

His representatives even reportedly travelled to the North East in order to try and push through the move, but in the end nothing materialised, and Bakker remains at Leverkusen.

The Latest: ‘Contact’ made

As per SportBILD (via Sport Witness), ‘contact’ with Bakker and his management over a potential move to Tyneside is still ongoing after the January bid, and they are now ready to ‘make a new offer’ for him in the summer.

It is not clear whether his valuation is the same as it was last window, but nonetheless it seems as if the Magpies are now lining up a new bid.

The Verdict: Depends on Targett

It has been reported that the Toon will look to sign Matt Targett from Aston Villa on a permanent deal after impressing while on loan, meaning that they would have the left-back spot covered, and so signing Bakker as well would not seem like a smart move.

However, if any deal for Targett fell through, then the Dutchman could be a great alternative.

Described as a player who has ‘pace and strength’ as well as ‘footballing ability’ (via The Chronicle) by Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller, the six-foot-one menace would suit Premier League football very well, and at just 21 years of age, he has a lot of potential.

Nonetheless, the club have to see what happens with Targett first of all, before pursuing a deal for the Bundesliga left-back.

Pearce gives promising Liverpool update

Liverpool have been heavily linked with signing Aurelien Tchouameni this summer, and now a new update has emerged from a reliable Merseyside journalist.

What’s the latest?

Liverpool reporter for The Athletic James Pearce hosted a Q&A on the website for supporters to ask him anything related to the club after the game against Aston Villa on Tuesday evening.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

One supporter asked for an update on the highly exciting links to Monaco midfielder Tchouameni, and Pearce seemingly confirmed the club’s interest in the player by responding:

“Nothing new that I am aware of. Interest but Real also very keen.”

Spanish news outlet AS (via Sport Witness) have since reported that Liverpool are “very close” to signing the player and have “made an offer”.

Supporters will be excited

Although speculation has been high surrounding the potential move for Tchouameni, the fact that interest is confirmed by a reliable journalist like Pearce will surely be exciting for supporters to read, as the popular midfielder is in high demand when it comes to having his pick of Premier League clubs.

Manchester United and Arsenal have also been linked to the player over the last few weeks, so it would be a really impressive coup for Klopp and his team if they manage to pull off securing the young star’s signature this summer.

Tchouameni has to be held in high regard as a master of all trades when it comes to his ability to offer a huge impact on both defensive and offensive play for his current Ligue 1 side.

According to Soccerment, since the beginning of last season, the 22-year-old has scored five goals and contributed four assists, whilst proving he’s not shy when it comes to taking his chances with 104 shots attempted and 34 big chances created for Monaco, but it’s not just his attacking attributes that stand out.

Tchouameni ranks at number one for interceptions (96) of any midfield player in the top five European leagues this season alone, with a pass accuracy of 87% and a duel success ratio of 63.9% proving that he is exceptional in defensive transition as well as getting stuck in with the attacking press, something that Liverpool love to execute in their style of play.

With that being said, the young talent could easily slot into Jurgen Klopp’s midfield system with ease and appears to identify as the exact type of player that Liverpool are looking to add to their ageing midfield.

If the club can get the deal over the line this summer he will be a very exciting prospect to watch.

Everton plotting bid for Kim Min-jae

Everton are still not sure whether they will be playing Premier League or Championship football next season as their relegation battle goes down to the wire with just three games left, but it hasn’t stopped transfer interest from mounting this month, with one player set to join Goodison Park this summer.

What’s the latest?

According to a report from Turkish news outlet Fanatik, the Toffees are amongst a number of clubs interested in signing Fenerbahçe centre-back Kim Min-jae this summer.

Napoli and Tottenham are suggested as the clubs who join Everton in plotting to make a serious offer for the South Korean, with his release clause being valued at €23m (£19.5m).

Miles better than Holgate

The £9.9m-rated defender has been in impressive form for the Turkish side, and with Everton’s defensive problems often being exposed this season, Frank Lampard could use a fresh impetus in the back line from a player who dominates his position.

Kim, who is nicknamed “monster” and has been referred to as the “Korean Van Dijk” by Sky Sports, has put in consistent and dominant performances in his position this season for Fenerbahçe.

According to SofaScore, in 31 appearances this season he has been successful in the majority of his duels (61%) and in the overwhelming majority of his dribbles (75%), also making 2.3 interceptions, 1.5 tackles and 4.1 clearances on average per game, which shows that his effectiveness in defensive play makes a huge impact.

When you compare these statistics to current Everton centre-back Mason Holgate, it is no wonder the Merseyside club are interested in snapping up the South Korean colossus this summer.

The Toffees defender has a lower success rate on his duels (55%) and is successful in only 33% of his dribbles, making 1.1 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 3.7 clearances per game in his 22 appearances this season. Therefore, Kim would be a huge upgrade on Holgate when you compare their statistics from 2021/22.

Ultimately, the Everton manager will need to focus on securing top-flight football next season before he begins to look at the areas which need strengthening in the transfer market this summer. However, if the Toffees stay in the Premier League, then Kim would be the perfect signing to improve their defence heading into the 2022/23 campaign.

Manchester Test postponed indefinitely over Covid-19 fears

It remains to be seen how the boards can work out a window to play the match

Nagraj Gollapudi10-Sep-2021The fifth and final Test in Manchester has been postponed indefinitely in the wake of the Covid-19 outbreak within the India squad. In a statement released on Friday, the BCCI said it was in talks with the ECB over conducting the match at a later date.”The BCCI and ECB held several rounds of discussion to find a way to play the Test Match, however, the outbreak of Covid-19 in the Indian team contingent forced the decision of calling off the Old Trafford Test Match.”In lieu (sic) of the strong relationship between BCCI and ECB, the BCCI has offered to ECB a rescheduling of the cancelled Test match. It remains to be seen how the boards can work out a window for the match, though one could possibly be carved out when India return to England next year for a scheduled limited-overs series. This development seems to have ended the possibility of India having to forfeit the Test match, though further developments are awaited.News that the match wouldn’t begin as originally planned came in hours before the scheduled toss. “Due to fears of a further increase in the number of COVID cases inside the camp, India are regrettably unable to field a team,” the ECB said in a statement. “We send our sincere apologies to fans and partners for this news, which we know will cause immense disappointment and inconvenience to many.”The development came on the back of intense discussions between the BCCI and the ECB after India’s assistant physiotherapist Yogesh Parmar returned a positive Covid-19 test on Wednesday. ESPNcricinfo understands more than one India player had expressed concerns about taking the field in talks between the BCCI and the team management over the last two days. The entire India squad returned negative RT-PCR tests on Thursday, but results of a second round of testing performed on Thursday are still awaited. It is understood that the players and both boards suspect another case emerging from this round of tests, and hence the BCCI told the ECB that India would struggle to put out a playing XI for the fifth Test, which was to be played at Old Trafford from September 10 to 14.A sense of confusion had spread among the Indian camp in the last two days even as the BCCI was in discussions with ECB over whether to carry on with the series or cancel the final Test. While the discussion carried on through the middle of Thursday night, the Indian contingent remained unaware of the what decision the BCCI was going to take. However, it is understood the BCCI did ask the players to keep their bags ready to fly out to the UAE for the IPL well ahead of the scheduled departure date of September 15, when the bulk of the India and England players were to board charter flights to join their franchises. Then on Friday morning, a few hours before the official toss time, the Indian camp received a message on their team WhatsApp group. The first message said: “The match has been called off. It’s impt that each one of you stay in your room.” About 10 minutes later another message popped up on the group: “We are unable to arrange breakfast in your room so if you want you can go to the restaurant to have your meal.”It was not the first instance of such mixed messages circulating in the India camp. After the entire squad returned negative RT-PCR tests on Thursday, it is understood that during one of the meetings with the BCCI, several players grouped into one room for the virtual discussion. The drama began after Parmar experienced Covid-19 symptoms immediately after returning from the first day of India’s training at Old Trafford on Wednesday. A positive lateral flow test triggered the BCCI medical team to send the entire squad back to their rooms, since Parmar had been in close contact with several India players in the last week. Parmar had only taken charge midway into the fourth Test at the Oval after lead physio Nitin Patel went into isolation after being identified as a close contact of India head coach Ravi Shastri, who tested positive for Covid-19 on the third evening of the fourth Test at The Oval.Ravi Shastri’s positive Test midway through the fourth Test at The Oval was the first case of Covid-19 in India’s camp•Getty Images

While three members of the contingent – Patel, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar – were identified as immediate contacts of Shastri, it was far more difficult to determine who the close contacts of Parmar were, considering he was treating a wider group of players. This included Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma. These players have been mingling among the wider group, which has made identifying close contacts even more complicated. In their chats with the BCCI, the players were also concerned about the situation having an impact on their families. Most of the India players are travelling with their families including Virat Kohli, Rohit, Ajinkya Rahane, Pujara, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant and Umesh Yadav. The key concern, though, for the BCCI was it did not want the IPL to be impacted considering it is starting in nine days’ time. With that in mind the BCCI discussed cancelling the final Test, but the ECB is understood to have made it clear that it would interpret any refusal to play as a forfeiture. The BCCI was keen to avoid such a scenario, as not only would it see England square the series, but it could expose the BCCI to claims of lost revenue from broadcasters and the venue. Lost revenue could, it is thought, total up to GBP 30 million. The World Test Championship competition terms state that a Covid-19 outbreak within a team is an acceptable reason for a Test to be abandoned – and not forfeited. With the WTC points system now calculated on the basis of percentage of points contested, a four-Test series instead of five would not adversely impact a side’s points total.Had the boards not agreed to the postponement, the series result could have gone into the hands of the ICC match referee Chris Broad based on whether the ECB accepted India’s fears of a larger outbreak in their camp as “acceptable non-compliance” as per the WTC regulations. A cancellation would have given India a 2-1 series victory, and a forfeiture led to a 2-2 draw.Currently India have pocketed 26 WTC points from the series while England have 14 out of the available 48 points.

Monank Patel replaces Saurabh Netravalkar as USA T20I captain

Xavier Marshall and Ali Khan have been recalled for USA’s T20 World Cup qualifier campaign

Peter Della Penna20-Oct-2021Top-order batter Monank Patel has been named USA T20I captain, after incumbent Saurabh Netravalkar decided to step away from the role in order to focus on his bowling. The leadership change was announced on Tuesday as USA unveiled their squad for next month’s Americas T20 World Cup qualifier, to be played between November 7 and 14 in Antigua. There were also recalls for four players, including Xavier Marshall and Ali Khan, who has made himself available after a two-year absence, as he pursued opportunities on the T20 franchise circuit.”The appointment of Monank Patel as USA’s new T20I captain comes after 50-over captain, Saurabh Netravalkar, requested the opportunity to focus fully on his bowling in the shortest format of the game,” USA men’s selection chairman Michael Voss said in a press statement. “He [Netravalkar] had done that with great success during the recent Minor League Cricket competition and the selection panel were fully supportive of his decision.”Related

He scored a T20 century in just his second match, against Belize. That was four months before all international T20s were given T20I status. He has scored three 50-over centuries for USA, the last of them – an even 100 against Nepal last month – his only one in ODIs.His appointment came less than two years after he had run afoul of the USA Cricket administration for his role in a drinking incident during the ODI tour of the UAE in December 2019, which resulted in Steven Taylor being stripped of the USA vice-captaincy. Aaron Jones will serve as vice-captain now after recovering from a hand injury that ruled him out of all but one of the six ODIs USA played in Oman in September.Ali Khan’s return to the USA set-up was foreshadowed on his social media accounts in recent weeks, as he replaced his profile pictures – which had previously showed him wearing his Trinbago Knight Riders kit – with images of his best moments playing for USA. He has not played for USA since the last day of WCL Division Two in Namibia in April 2019, where he finished as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker to help USA secure ODI status. He had been included in USA’s squad for the same regional T20 Qualifier event in Bermuda in August 2019, but suffered a sprained ankle at a training session on the eve of the first match and didn’t take the field for USA as they suffered an embarrassing string of results, losing four matches to Canada and Bermuda to fall short of advancing to the T20 global qualifier in the UAE.Xavier Marshall was recalled after he had a good run for Somerset (NJ) Cavaliers in the MiLC•Peter Della Penna

Marshall is one of the other four players recalled, giving him a chance to atone for his worst tour for USA at the corresponding event in Bermuda. The 35-year-old scored 55 runs in five innings against Bermuda, Canada and Cayman Islands before he was dropped for the last match of the tour. His last appearances for USA came in the February 2020 ODI tour of Nepal, where he scored 54 runs in four innings as USA went winless. His recall came after he finished in the top-ten scorers playing for Somerset (NJ) Cavaliers in the MiLC, finishing with 542 runs in 15 innings with a century and five fifties. The other two recalled players were fast bowler Rusty Theron – who had withdrawn from USA’s recent ODI tour of Oman due to personal commitments – and Ian Holland, who was similarly unavailable for the tour of Oman due to his English County cricket commitments at Hampshire. Both players have yet to make their T20I debuts for USA.One other player brought into the squad, 29-year-old New York-based left-arm spinner Trinson Carmichael, has yet to make his USA debut. Carmichael took 21 wickets in 18 matches at an average of 12.62 and an economy of 4.91 for Empire State Titans in the MiLC. He was preferred over 19-year-old former USA junior left-arm spinner Vatsal Vaghela, who finished third in MiLC with 29 wickets in 17 matches at an average of 11.41 and an economy of 5.49 playing for Golden State Grizzlies. To make room for the five incoming players, USA selectors dropped fast bowlers Kyle Phillip, Jessy Singh and Abhishek Paradkar; batters Sushant Modani, Dominique Rikhi and Sanjay Krishnamurthi; and left-arm spinner Nosthush Kenjige.USA T20I squad: Monank Patel (capt), Aaron Jones (vice-capt), Trinson Carmichael, Karima Gore, Ian Holland, Elmore Hutchinson, Ali Khan, Jaskaran Malhotra, Xavier Marshall, Saurabh Netravalkar, Nisarg Patel, Gajanand Singh, Steven Taylor, Rusty Theron

Matt Kuhnemann's ten-wicket haul dismantles Tasmania resistance

The left-arm spinner came into the match with just nine first-class wickets

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Oct-2021Left-arm spinner Matt Kuhnemann completed the first ten-wicket haul of his career, more than doubling his career tally, as Queensland overcame a stubborn Tasmania second innings in Townsville.Kuhnemann, who before this match had just nine first-class wickets, gave Queensland an early lift when he removed Charlie Wakim. When Marnus Labuschagne had an lbw appeal upheld against Caleb Jewell to remove the opener for 90 – much to Labuschagne’s delight – Tasmania were 4 for 173 but they did not give in without a fight.Jake Doran, who took a nasty blow on the helmet when he was trying to avoid a short delivery, and Beau Webster added 65 before Kuhnemann worked his way through the middle order. When Gabe Bell was caught behind Queensland were just a wicket away but that final blow took some time to come as the last-wicket pair of Jarrod Freeman and Riley Meredith added 64 to bring the required runs below 100.However, before it got into nervy territory debutant Connor Sully, who had claimed a wicket with his first delivery on the second day, wrapped up the match when Meredith pulled into the leg side.It was a notable result for Queensland who were without Michael Neser, Mark Steketee, Mitchell Swepson, Xavier Bartlett and Billy Stanlake in their bowling attack.
