USMNT U20s player ratings vs Fiji: Diego Luna changes game off bench as Cade Cowell & Caleb Wiley score for wasteful U.S.

The U.S. U-20 Moon Boy came off the bench to score a goal as Mikey Varas' team left it late to beat Fiji.

Under the bright Argentinian sun, it was the rising star known as Moon Boy that changed the game for the U.S. U-20 men's national team.

Diego Luna came off the bench to help the U.S. finally break down a pesky Fiji defense with a goal in the 66th minute. He was joined on the scoresheet by Cade Cowell and Caleb Wiley, as the U.S. overcame a poor start to ultimately seal the 3-0 win they expected to earn.

The triumph over Fiji is the U.S. team's second in as many games at the World Cup, sealing their place in the knockout rounds. It didn't come easy, though, even if many thought it would. Fiji were blown out 4-0 by Slovakia in their opener, but they were better here. Their defense was somewhat stout, but they were also aided by a very wasteful U.S. performance.

A total of 16 shots failed to find the net before the 17th, Luna's effort, finally made the difference. In total, the U.S. fired 31 shots to Fiji's six , but only seven were on target. Fiji were very much in it for large stretches and it took goals from Cowell and Wiley after the 88th minute to truly seal the result.

It was an attacking performance that will raise some alarm bells for Mikey Varas, but there will also be little reason to panic given the rotations made by the U.S. head coach.

In the end, it was a win; a somewhat ugly win, but a win nonetheless. Up next is a match against Slovakia, but the U.S. will be looking ahead to the knockouts now.

GOAL rates the Star and Stripes players from the Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario.

    Goalkeeper & Defense

    Gaga Slonina (7/10):

Had to make a save early in the second half but, other than that, not much, which makes that save all the more vital. Important to get minutes, though, even if he's rarely needed.

    Jonathan Gomez (6/10):

A few good crosses, but never got close to recreating his magic from the opener. Should get a rest against Slovakia after taking a beating from a physical Fiji team.

    Marcus Ferkranus (7/10):

An absolute wrecking ball as he left several Fiji players worse for wear. Had a few okay sequences defensively the few times Fiji got forward.

    Brandan Craig (7/10):

Didn't need to do much, but did take the free kick to tee up Wiley's tap-in. Also provided one of the funniest moments of the match when he was overheard asking the referee for 20 minutes of added time to combat Fiji's time-wasting.

    Michael Halliday(6/10):

Not too impactful. Got on the ball a few times, but no signature moments.

    Midfield

    Daniel Edelman (7/10):

A solid 80 minutes for the captain, who returned to the XI after sitting out the opener. Still key to the U.S. midfield and should be in the lineup going forward.

    Jack McGlynn (8/10):

Another standout performance from the Union homegrown. Even at such a young age, McGlynn understands how to dictate a game, and open one up with a ball over the top, and he did so again here.

    Owen Wolff (5/10):

Taken off at halftime as Varas looked to shake things up. Fairly quiet once again, all things considered.

  • Getty Images

    Attack

    Cade Cowell (7/10):

Credited with the assist on Luna's goal, and his penalty shout distracted Fiji just long enough for the RSL man to pounce. Added the second goal late on with a stunning long-range finish, which saved his score a bit in a game that lacked end product until that moment.

    Darren Yapi (4/10):

On the one hand, the Colorado Rapids star was incredibly dangerous. On the other, he seemingly found a way to place the ball everywhere other than the goal. The hope is that he can smooth that out, but he could have had several goals in this one.

    Quinn Sullivan (5/10):

Had one good chance early on, but dragged it wide, which was a theme for the U.S. throughout the first half. Sacrificed at the break for Luna, which turned out to be the right call.

    Subs & Manager

    Diego Luna (8/10):

Came on and changed the game with his goal. Created a few other chances and, like many of his teammates, could have maybe added another goal. Overall, a reminder of what Luna brings: creativity.

    Niko Tsakiris (6/10):

Important minutes for a player that still needs to shake off the rust. Didn't look quite himself, but he's on his way.

    Caleb Wiley (6/10):

Came on in the 75th minute and got his late goal to help lift the goal difference a bit. It was an easy one, too, as he tapped in from close range.

    Obed Vargas (N/A):

Replaced Edelman to add some fresh legs late in the midfield.

    Mikey Varas (6/10):

Will definitely be disappointed, but it's always better to be disappointed with a win than a loss. Made the right call to rotate and to bring Luna in when needing a goal, but the U.S. may now have to sweat out a goal difference race atop the group.

England U21s player ratings vs Spain: James Trafford's last-gasp penalty heroics secure European glory for Lee Carsley's brave Young Lions

The Young Lions have won the Under-21 European Championship after Curtis Jones' fortuitous goal secured a 1-0 win over Spain in Georgia.

England are European champions! Lee Carsley's Under-21 side defeated Spain in the final to win the tournament for the first time since 1984.

In a hugely dramatic end to the game, Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford – who is heading to Burnley this summer – saved Abel Ruiz's penalty in stoppage time to stop Spain scoring an equaliser that would've forced extra-time.

The Young Lions had taken the lead in a scrappy game that saw a total of 11 bookings and four red cards, including one for England coach Ashley Cole, with Cole Palmer's free-kick deflecting off Curtis Jones as he ducked in front of the wall before looping into Arnau Tenas' net. The result ends 39 years of hurt at Under-21 level, with Carsley leading his side to the tournament win without them even conceding a goal over their six matches.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    James Trafford (9/10):

Wow! England's hero, the Burnley-bound goalkeeper kept out Abel Ruiz's late penalty to win his side the trophy. Incredibly he becomes the first ever goalkeeper to keep six clean sheets in an Under-21 European Championship finals.

    James Garner (6/10):

A lot of Spain's attacks came down his side in the first half and Paredes beat him comfortably in the air as he almost opened the scoring. Still, stuck to his task in that unfamiliar right-back role and played his part as the Young Lions won the trophy.

    Taylor Harwood-Bellis (6/10):

Another game, another clean sheet for England and Harwood-Bellis did his job well as the deeper of the two centre-backs. Didn't need to engage as much as Colwill, but kept the dangerous Abel Ruiz quiet.

    Levi Colwill (7/10):

He's a throwback is Colwill. No nonsense in his defending, often stepping into midfield to try to win the ball back. Unfortunate not to give England the lead late on in the first half as he crashed a header against the post following Palmer's deep free-kick. Had been commanding up until he conceded the penalty late on but the heroic Trafford spared his blushes.

    Max Aarons (6/10):

A pretty quiet night for the Norwich City full-back, with many of Spain's attacks, especially in the first half, being focused down their left. Still, he was solid enough and helped his side get over the line to win the tournament.

    Midfield

    Cole Palmer (7/10):

Lively. Stung Tenas' palms after neatly cutting inside and firing at goal in what was a largely forgettable first half for England before his free-kick deflected off Curtis Jones' back and into the net for what proved to be the winner.

    Angel Gomes (6/10):

Booked midway through the first half as he stopped Baena accelerating away on the counter – the Villarreal winger getting his retribution with a crunching tackle soon after that saw him carded too. Neat and tidy, as he always is, in possession before being replaced after 73 minutes.

    Curtis Jones (6/10):

Mix-up with Gibbs-White allowed Spain to break in the first half but got away with it as Baena shot wide. A passenger for much of the first 45, before the ball smacked off his back from Palmer's direct free-kick and looped into the net. He's had better games but almost grabbed England's second with a left-footed shot that was well kept out by Tenas.

    Morgan Gibbs-White (5/10):

Nowhere near as effective in the final as he has been throughout the rest of the tournament. Was inches away from giving England the lead early on – and diverted a presentable chance wide in the second half – but it wasn't the Nottingham Forest Player of the Year's day. Was sent off late on but he won't care too much as he gets his hands on the ultimate prize.

    Emile Smith Rowe (5/10):

One of many England players to be wasteful in possession in the first half and was eventually withdrawn midway through the second period. Can't fault his effort but just couldn't get in the game as much as he would've liked.

  • Getty Images

    Attack

    Anthony Gordon (5/10):

Forced an early save from Tenas as he cut in on his right foot and almost put one on a plate for Gibbs-White for a tap-in after. Struggled to hold the ball up as England found it tough to build any momentum in the first half and didn't really have a meaningful chance in the second before he ran out of steam. Goes back to Newcastle as a European Championship winner and the Player of the Tournament, not a bad summer's work.

    Subs & Manager

    Noni Madueke (6/10):

The Chelsea winger came on for Smith Rowe in the 67th minute and almost scored, only for Tenas to crucially stick out a leg and divert away.

    Cameron Archer (6/10):

Late introduction but didn't have time to do anything meaningful.

    Oliver Skipp (6/10):

Came on to shore up the midfield as Angel Gomes tired late on.

    Harvey Elliott (6/10):

Came on for Cole Palmer with a little under 10 minutes left and almost added a second as he flashed a shot at goal that Tenas did well to save with his right hand.

    Tommy Doyle (6/10):

Introduced late on as England attempted to see the game out.

    Lee Carsley (9/10):

What more can you say? England are European champions at Under-21 level for the first time since 1984. Carsley got his team selections right all through the tournament and his stock has risen considerably after bringing the trophy home.

Canada Women's World Cup 2023 squad: Who's in & who's out?

Details about the Canada squad for Women's World Cup 2023, including the players who may be included and those who may miss out.

Canada have appeared in every Women's World Cup event ever since they failed to qualify for the inaugural edition of the tournament in 1991.

Among their eight appearances in the Women's World Cup, their best run was in 2003 when they reached the semi-finals but lost the bronze medal match to the United States. Under current coach Bev Priestman, the nation are the reigning champions in the Summer Olympics.

They have not made it past the quarter-finals in their last two appearances in the Women's World Cup finals, finishing at the round of 16 stage in 2019.

Canada will play in Group B at the 2023 Women’s World Cup with Australia, Nigeria and the Republic of Ireland in their group. Canada will play their opening game on July 21 against Nigeria in Melbourne.

Sticking to the core from the last few years, Priestman announced a 25-member preliminary squad, and the final squad of 23 players is expected to be known by July 9. GOAL takes a look at the preliminary squad.

24-year-old Lysianne Proulx would be looking to make her international debut.

At the start of the new year, the club conducted a warm-weather training camp in Dubai and since returning from the Middle East, Arsenal have registered six straight league wins, where they have scored 25 goals.

Jorginho, who had a stellar outing in the team's 4-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday, has now credited the Dubai camp for the team's sudden upturn in form.

  • WHAT JORGINHO SAID

Speaking to after the match, the Italy international said, "It's a secret – only joking! I think we just kept working hard because in the end, we were creating but we maybe weren't finishing the chances that we were creating.

"Then something clicked – the connection between the players, with the staff, with the fans – it's just an amazing feeling all together and then things turn your way. The atmosphere at the Emirates, and it's just a pleasure to be here. We go out there and we give our best. We work hard and then we are really enjoying this journey together."
