Leicester join the race to sign new player with 13 assists this season

After failing to avoid the drop last season, Leicester City were forced to open a new chapter in the Championship under Enzo Maresca, who has got off to the perfect start. The Foxes are on course for a stunningly comfortable promotion, already sitting 14 points clear of third place Leeds United, and much of the credit deserves to go to those who worked hard off the pitch to keep the majority of their squad together.

Now, Maresca's focus will likely be on adding to his squad ahead of what looks likely to be a return to Premier League action next season. And that could include the addition of one particular midfielder.

Leicester City transfer news

Although the majority of Leicester's good work came through keeping hold of their key players, they also did well when it came to incomings. By the end of the summer transfer window, the Foxes had welcomed the likes of Harry Winks, Conor Coady and Stephy Mavididi, who has got off to a particularly blistering start. They could yet return to the transfer market once more in January, too, as they look to strengthen even further.

According to TeamTalk, Leicester are eyeing a move for Jhon Arias. The Championship leaders have sent scouts to watch the Fluminense midfielder, who has reportedly attracted the interest of West Ham United, Leeds United, Burnley, Wolves, Crystal Palace and Rangers in what could quickly turn into a hectic race for his signature.

On the up, the idea of a move to Leicester is a far more convincing one to pitch these days. That said, given how many clubs are reportedly interested in Arias, those at the King Power will have to be swift when making their move. If they did manage to secure the midfielder, then it would represent a major coup ahead of other chasing English clubs.

How good is Jhon Arias?

Fluminense forwardJhon Arias.

As things stand, Maresca's side sit five points clear of Ipswich Town and well on their way to silverware come the end of the season, but a deal for Arias would undoubtedly improve their chances of sealing the Championship title – it speaks volumes about just how impressive the midfielder has been that a number of Premier League clubs are reportedly interested in welcoming him at some stage in the near future.

Arias' stats show exactly why he's in demand, too, having scored nine goals and assisted a further 13 in 53 appearances in all competitions in Brazil. It's the kind of numbers that would only elevate Leicester upon their potential return to England's top flight. The hope from Maresca's perspective will be that the Foxes don't just survive next season, should they earn promotion, but instead push on into mid-table comforts.

When January arrives, Arias will certainly have a decision to make, with the race only likely to heat up even more for his signature. As of right now, his focus may well be on Fluminense, but that could quickly change if the bids begin to come flying in.

Newcastle eye cheap & versatile signing who plays every defensive position

Newcastle United have been forced to balance European football and Premier League action this season after qualifying for the Champions League during the last campaign. And, whilst the Magpies have enjoyed impressive victories over Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, they have also suffered defeats against the likes of Brighton & Hove Albion and Borussia Dortmund as the fixtures and injuries mount.

Newcastle's up and down run will have given Eddie Howe plenty to think about ahead of the next two transfer windows, as those at St James' Park reportedly set their sights on some defensive depth for the former Bournemouth boss.

Newcastle United transfer news

At the time, it looked as though Newcastle spent well in the summer, welcoming Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and some young defensive talent to reinforce Howe's side. Months later, and that's anything but the case. Tonali is at the start of a 10-month ban for breaching betting rules, Barnes is injured and the Magpies have just three recognised centre-backs after failing to add depth to their backline. And that's a problem that they could look to solve next summer in a deal that could eventually look like a stroke of genius.

According to 90min, Newcastle are keeping tabs on Tiago Djalo and are ready to battle for the Lille defender's signature against Serie A giants Inter Milan. Djalo's current Lille contract expires at the end of the season, making him a free agent, and he is open to a move. The Premier League side have reportedly been tracking the defender for a year now and will continue to monitor him upon his return from injury.

Djalo's versatility would certainly provide Howe with a major boost. The 23-year-old can play in every position across the backline, which would solve Newcastle's growing concern over their depth.

"Strong" Djalo can solve Newcastle's depth problem

We've already seen Sven Botman shoehorned in at centre-back this season and Howe will be well aware of the need to avoid a similar situation next season. And that's where the arrival of Djalo could help. The Lille man has earned the interest of both the Magpies and Inter Milan through excellent performances in Ligue 1. When compared to Newcastle's current options too, Djalo's stats last season show that he is more than capable of keeping up.

It's no surprise then that Djalo has been at the centre of praise during his career, including from Zach Lowy, who posted on X: "Tiago Djaló. After moving from Sporting to Milan in January due to a contract dispute, he’ll need to impress for the Primavera and then get a loan before he can contest the likes of Caldara and Romagnoli. Agile, strong, quick but needs to improve his decisions and IQ."

Having matured with age but kept the same athletic traits that made him such a highly rated prospect back then, it will certainly be interesting to see whether Newcastle make their move.

Man City keen to re-sign "different class" player; he’s been shortlisted

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is keen to add to his squad in January and is now reportedly on the trail of a former Sky Blues player ahead of the transfer window opening.

Manchester City transfer updates…

The Citizens are always there or thereabouts when it comes to transfer stories and this January looks to be no different as Guardiola aims to ensure his side have adequate squad depth to challenge on several fronts.

Planning for the immediate term is the main consideration at the Etihad Stadium; however, bringing in players for the future is another important facet of their spending.

According to The Sun, Manchester City are closing in on a deal to sign Boca Juniors wonderkid Valentin Barco and will aim to acquire the left-back before then sending him out on loan to Leicester City, who are managed by former Sky Blues assistant Enzo Maresca, in order to gain further experience.

Brighton & Hove Albion were also keen on the Argentinian defender, which is usually a good indicator of their potential due to the Seagulls' success in nurturing prodigious talent; however, the Citizens look to have stolen a march on their Premier League rivals and are now in the driving seat to complete a £13 million swoop for Barco.

AC Milan striker Francesco Camarda, who became the youngest ever player in Serie A last weekend, is also someone who Manchester City have made overtures to try and tempt to the North West, though they face stiff competition from Chelsea, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund for his signature.

Now, a fresh report has suggested that Guardiola could turn to a former Manchester City man in January to bolster a key position.

Manchester City target Douglas Luiz

According to Football Insider, Manchester City are keen to re-sign Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, who is on a shortlist of potential midfield recruits at the Etihad Stadium which also includes Al-Hilal playmaker Ruben Neves.

The report claims that the Citizens had a buyback clause inserted into his deal when he left for Aston Villa for a fee in the region of £15 million; nevertheless, it expired in 2021 and they would likely need to shell out a hefty fee to acquire the Brazil international.

Douglas Luiz celebrates for Aston Villa

Luiz, who has previously been labelled "different class" by Harry Redknapp, has made 20 appearances in all competitions this campaign, registering six goals and three assists (Luiz statistics – Transfermarkt).

Providing efficient support for attackers such as Ollie Watkins, Moussa Diaby and Leon Bailey, the 25-year-old has averaged around 1.2 shots and 1.5 key passes per Premier League match in 2023/24 (Luiz statistics – WhoScored).

Manchester City are always on the lookout for talent to bolster their already stacked squad and Luiz could make a dramatic return to the North West despite failing to make an impression last time out.

Nottingham Forest learn final verdict in appeal against four-point deduction as they face nerve-jangling end to Premier League relegation battle

Nottingham Forest have learned the final verdict in their appeal against a four-point deduction, as their Premier League fate remains in the balance.

  • Independent commission makes decision on appeal
  • Could have huge impact on relegation battle

    WHAT HAPPENED?

An independent commission appointed by the Premier League handed Forest a four-point deduction as punishment for the club's breach of profit and sustainability rules, as they admitted to overspending by £34.5million over a three-year period.

As per , Forest launched an appeal against the decision, and argued at a hearing held on April 24 that they were facing a disadvantage compared to other Premier League clubs who have been in the top-flight far longer and therefore enjoy higher spending limits, but the commission has upheld their original verdict and the docked points remain on the club's record.

  • WHAT THE PREMIER LEAGUE SAID

The Premier League released an official statement confirming the news on Tuesday, which reads: "An independent Appeal Board has upheld the decision of a Commission to deduct four points from Nottingham Forest following an admitted breach of the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). The PSR sanction applied to the assessment period ending Season 2022/23 and was appealed by the club on two grounds. The club argued that the independent Commission committed an error in not treating its sale of a high-profile player shortly after the assessment period as a mitigating factor, and that it committed a further error in electing not to suspend some or all of the points deduction it imposed. Each of these grounds was rejected by the Appeal Board, which found the independent Commission was entitled to immediately impose the sanction it did. The four-point deduction will therefore remain in place."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Forest were originally in line for a six-point penalty under current PSR rules, but “excellent co-operation” and an "early plea" led to them escaping with a more lenient punishment. However, the verdict still prompted a furious response from Forest, who were "surprised that the Premier League gave no consideration at all to the unique circumstances of the club and its mitigation" as they were left “extremely dismayed by the tone and content" of the commission's documents on the case.

    DID YOU KNOW?

The independent commission's decision leaves Forest facing a nerve jangling end to the Premier League season, as they remain 17th in the table on 29 points, just three clear of 18th-placed Luton, with Burnley a further two points back. Forest picked up a crucial 3-1 win at Sheffield United in their last outing to boost their survival hopes, but they have also been charged with misconduct by the Premier League for releasing a statement questioning the integrity of the top-flight's VAR team after a controversial 2-0 defeat to Everton on April 21.

Sunderland can land dream Will Still alternative in 43 y/o coach

Sunderland will hope to appoint a new manager sooner rather than later, getting this weekend's Championship fixture with West Brom out of the way before their chosen man to succeed Tony Mowbray can come in and propel the Black Cats up the division.

Mowbray's sacking does look harsh if you're an outsider casually looking in, Sunderland only three points off the playoffs, currently in ninth spot.

Yet, it's not just all about the immediate results on the pitch for the Sunderland hierarchy and more about wanting to install a manager at the club who is more aligned with the vision of the club going forward.

The Black Cats want to appoint a forward-thinking figure to match the youthful Sunderland squad, Mowbray viewed merely as a competent short-term option.

Sunderland look likely to be going down the route of appointing a left-field manager to replace the outgoing 60-year-old, with a number of unorthodox names linked to the vacancy.

Sunderland manager latest

Kieran McKenna and Will Still were reportedly the favourites amongst a long list of targets to replace Mowbray according to TEAMTalk yesterday, Sunderland's ambitions evident for all to see if they did land McKenna at the expense of Ipswich Town.

Whoever the Black Cats do go for, they will have to fit the ethos of the club outlined by chairman Kyril Louis-Dreyfus in a statement released after Mowbray was relieved of his duties. Wanting "sustainability and success" as a must, the 34-year-old also spoke of the importance of a "high performance culture" and a "strong playing identity" to be proud of.

Five managers Sunderland could turn to after sacking Tony Mowbray

Sunderland unexpectedly relieved Mowbray of his duties last night, with a number of managers now rumoured for the Stadium of Light vacancy.

By
Kelan Sarson

Dec 5, 2023

Mowbray must have fallen short of what the Sunderland chairman wanted, triggering him into axing the manager after an underwhelming 1-1 draw at Millwall.

Louis-Dreyfus will hope this potential name coming in as the new manager can reinvent the Black Cats and help the team gradually move up the division back into the promotion places, OGC Nice assistant manager Julien Sable among those on the club's 'shortlist' – as per talkSPORT.

Unproven as a first-team boss, Sable is, however, still a wanted man for a reason.

Julien Sable's managerial style at OGC Nice

Sable is second in command to Francesco Farioli at Nice, Farioli previously in contention for the Sunderland job in the summer when Mowbray looked likely to exit before this campaign got underway.

The Black Cats are retreading similar footsteps going after Sable, therefore, but the Nice assistant manager is worthy of credit himself.

Nice currently find themselves in second spot in Ligue 1, the French outfit extremely hard to beat and break down with only one defeat next to their name and only five goals shipped in 14 games.

This resilient and dogged approach to games will have been worked on meticulously in training behind the scenes, Sable on the training ground daily implementing this style in drills alongside Farioli.

The Sunderland hierarchy would hope that the promising 43-year-old assistant could get the best out of the attackers at the Stadium of Light too away from helping the defence become more stoic, enabling the likes of Eliezer Mayenda and Nazariy Rusyn to come out of their shell.

Sable has been a caretaker manager before in his career at Saint-Etienne, but he will want to land a permanent manager role soon and Sunderland could well give the Nice man a chance to finally shine as a boss in his own right.

With reports indicating that Still's possible compensation could be a 'stumbling block', turning to another relatively youthful coach from Ligue 1, such as Sable, could well represent an ideal alternative.

The Championship hopefuls would have to give the 43-year-old first-time boss time to adapt to English football, hoping that when things do click he can be the long-term manager they've been searching for who can help Sunderland succeed for many years to come.

Journalist drops claim as Liverpool named in Joao Palhinha transfer race

Liverpool have their eyes on an "amazing" defensive midfielder who could be a difference-maker in the Premier League title race, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Liverpool linked with Andre Trindade

Much was made of the Reds' struggles in midfield throughout last season, with Fabinho and Jordan Henderson a far cry from the players they used to be when they sealed title glory in 2019/20. It was clear that major surgery was needed in the middle of the park, so Jurgen Klopp focused exclusively on that area, offloading dead wood and bringing in four new signings.

The difference has been immeasurable to date, with Dominik Szoboszlai the star addition to date, but Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo all providing more energy.

There have been calls from some supporters to sign a proper No.6 like Fabinho at his peak, though, with Mac Allister largely doing well in the deep-lying role, but naturally more of a No.8. Fluminense ace Andre has been talked about as an option for the Reds, but those rumours do appear to have quietened of late.

Liverpool have their eyes on Joao Palhinha

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones said Liverpool are interested in signing Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha, claiming it could help turn them into Premier League champions:

Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha.

"I'm surprised Liverpool haven't already made their move on Palhinha if they were going to do it. They've had their eye on him for the past year and it seems very clear to me that Palhinha is a player that they could do with.

"If Palhinha was playing number six for Liverpool, I think that they would have a much better chance of going on to win the league this season than they would without him. Certainly when you see Alexis Mac Allister having to play that role. There doesn't seem to be a defined person right now at Liverpool who can play that role."

There is no doubt that Palhinha is an impressive midfielder who can be so dominant in the middle of the park, standing out so often in a Fulham shirt. In fact, no Premier League player has made more tackles so far this season than Palhinha, and exactly the same applied last term, when his tally of 147 was 47 more than second-place Moises Caicedo (100). His teammate Alexsandar Mitrovic is a huge admirer, too, saying of him in the past:

"I think this year there’s been some sensational [signings] that we have made. For me personally, [Joao] Palhinha is the signing of the season so far, amazing, amazing [player]."

That being said, Palhinha is now 28 years of age, so he could drift past his peak relatively soon after joining Liverpool, and the money that Fulham will demand could make it a risk.

Klopp isn't one to sign players of this ilk, especially midway through the season, so it feels far more likely that he will end up sticking with the midfielders already in his squad, hoping they can do enough to get over the finish line in the title race.
