Newcastle fans react as Kenedy’s exit looms

[ad_pod ]

Reports claim Kenedy is “almost certain” to leave Newcastle this summer, and fans have been giving their verdict on the Brazilian’s nightmare season on Twitter.

According to The Evening Chronicle, Newcastle have been scouting wingers across Europe and do not see a future on Tyneside for Kenedy.

Last season, the youngster joined on loan from Chelsea and made a superb impact, lifting St. James’ Park every time he touched the ball and helping steer the Magpies clear of relegation and into the top ten.

This campaign though, his loan stay has been an absolute disaster; mustering just one goal and one assist in 14 starts.

The 23 year-old’s misery reached new lows last weekend when he was left completely out of Rafael Benitez’s matchday squad, and the gaffer is now expected to pursue other targets to upgrade his options on the wing.

Plenty of fans have been weighing on what has been an almost unbelievably bad showing from Kenedy this season, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Karma strikes: Wolves fans lay into Deeney and Foster after Arsenal howlers

[ad_pod ]

The war of words between Wolves supporters and Troy Deeney continued on Monday night as the Watford man was sent off during the club’s defeat to Arsenal, leading to fans of the Midlands club to lay into the forward.

The striker elbowed Lucas Torreira in the head and although there didn’t look to be a great deal in what was a rather innocuous challenge, he was given his marching orders.

Deeney had made some unsavoury comments about Raul Jimenez after Wolves lost in the FA Cup semi-final to the Hornets, and now their fans have taken his red card as a chance to get some revenge.

Following his dismissal, a number of Wolves fans felt as though karma had been served for not only Deeney but also Ben Foster who made a wretched mistake to allow Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to score.

With the two clubs set for a rematch later this month, one supporter said that Deeney had bottled their next meeting as he’ll now be suspended.

Wolves Fan TV place the blame for Wolves’ FA Cup semi-final collapse on John Ruddy in the video below…

The Hornets skipper was a thorn in Nuno Santo’s side earlier in April, scoring a last gasp penalty to take their FA Cup clash to extra-time. However, he and Foster both made remarks after the game which didn’t go down well.

Manchester United have made an awfully misguided decision to appoint Solskjaer

[ad_pod ]

Looking back at it, the decision to appoint Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on a permanent basis back in March seems strange.

It’s not as if the Norwegian was in high demand, nor was there the chance that he would leave the club if the decision had been delayed until the end of the season. This is a man who has spoken of his admiration for the club on a number of occasions, even calling the role his ‘dream job’ in the past.

So, in that respect, it seems strange that Manchester United didn’t at least wait until the season had ended to make a decision on whether or not to appoint a man who, let’s face it, is woefully under-qualified for a job of this magnitude.

Watch the video below to find out what Jesse Lingard is like off the pitch in the latest Match Of The Bae with Emma Conybeare…

Yes, his unbelievable run after succeeding Jose Mourinho, in which the Red Devils lost just once in 17 games, winning 14 of them, was very impressive.

But those higher up at Old Trafford should be experienced enough to know the effects of a ‘new manager bounce’, a short-term impact reinforced concretely by the fact that United have just two unconvincing wins from their six games since his permanent appointment – they have lost the other four.

There is clearly more to United’s problems than Solskjaer. The players are back to their ways of old under Mourinho, looking lost, disinterested and lethargic whilst the opposition better them in every department – again, there are a lot of problems at the club beside the manager.

However, that is all the reason more not to have appointed Solskjaer in March. So many bad decisions have been made since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, but to give the former Cardiff and Molde boss a three-year deal is up there with the worst.

If his impact is to merely be a short-term boost, they are now stuck with him for three years unless they give him a hefty pay-off to remove him from his contract.

What made United chiefs think that he was the answer for that amount of time? Chelsea have appointed Guus Hiddink and Rafa Benitez in the past to get them out of a rut, even watching the latter win a trophy, and still realised that there were people better suited for the job in the long-term.

The players’ performances in the 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Everton on Sunday looked far worse than anything they managed to muster up under Mourinho, and in a time of crisis such as this, it appears that only a manager of real pedigree with a good understanding of the market can even begin to patch it up.

Solskjaer, with a few Norwegian titles and a relegation with Cardiff under his belt, doesn’t appear capable of being anything other than a short-term cheerleader – as hasty decisions go, this one tops the lot.

Shock return? Leeds fans discuss Izzy Brown

[ad_pod ]

Some Leeds fans have been yearning to see Izzy Brown in the first team, after he impressed for the Under-23 side on Tuesday.

Leeds’ automatic promotion hopes are dangling by a thread after the Easter weekend action, as Sheffield United are now just one win away from locking up that coveted second place, providing there is no major swing in goal difference.

The Whites have suffered massively from a lack of midfield creativity in recent weeks, depending on an endless stream of crosses to break teams down instead of carving them open through the middle.

Who are the best away fans in the Championship? Pl>ymaker FC’s Thogden gives his top 10 in the video below…

And while fans are wondering if Brown could be a shock candidate to fill that creative void after the Chelsea loanee performed admirably against Newcastle’s Under-23 side, others are simply bashing the signing.

Leeds were beaten 3-0 in the Premier League Cup semi-final by the Magpies, but Brown was by far the standout player on the pitch.

The 22 year-old has just one senior appearance at Elland Road, and the Twitter reactions down below have a mixed response to his impressive display…

Embarrassing: Leeds fans far from happy with Wilder’s comments after promotion

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are raging after Chris Wilder’s comments about their club following confirmation that Sheffield United would be playing in the Premier League next season.

Despite it being a day of celebration for Wilder and his team he couldn’t help but go on a tirade about his closest rivals.

The Blades manager let loose his thoughts on his Yorkshire rivals whilst he was celebrating his team’s promotion to the Premier League.

Wilder said in a YouTube video on the club’s official channel.

“We’ve had one defeat in 13 and I’ve got muppets from Leeds talking about the pressure being on us.

“Bamford and (Adam) Forshaw and a couple of others. It’s over to you and this, that and the other.

“They got beat seven times since Christmas. We’ve been beaten once. We’ve set it up from Christmas to be in the race and we’ve steamrolled it.”

The Sheffield United boss held his nerve towards the end of the season, culminating in promotion to the Premier League for his club, whilst the Whites faltered at the final hurdle.

Wilder had often talked about Leeds towards the business end of the campaign. The manager has had the last laugh firing back one more time after the Blades’ triumph.

His comments touched a nerve with the Elland Road faithful as they branded him classless and embarrassing for focussing on Leeds on the proudest day of his managerial career.

Here’s what the fans have been saying on Twitter…

Rangers plotting swoop for Zander Clark

Allan McGregor has been nothing but outstanding for Rangers this season since making his return to Ibrox last summer. The 37-year-old has put in some top quality performances over the campaign and has played a huge role in how well the Light Blues have done over the last ten months or so.

However, the former Scotland international’s playing days are surely limited and it appears Steven Gerrard has already started to plan back-up options for when the time comes, with one impressive individual thought to be on his radar.

What’s the News?

According to a report by Football Insider, Rangers are thought to be plotting a move for St. Johnstone’s Zander Clark this summer.

The goalkeeper has been impressive this season for the Scottish Premiership side and the Light Blues are thought to be keeping tabs on him as they see him as an ideal back-up to the ageing McGregor.

However, Rangers are not believed to be the only club interested, as a number of clubs from either side of the border are said to be keen, although none have been named.

The Verdict:

As mentioned, Clark has been magnificent for St. Johnstone this season and has put in a number of solid contributions as he looks to help them finish top of their part of the Scottish Premiership split, as they just missed out on a place in the top-six.

The 26-year-old has put in a number of eye-catching performances, including keeping five consecutive clean sheets before the winter break, which had led to calls for him to be included in the Scotland national team set-up for their Nations League matches.

We at the Transfer Tavern have also been singing his praises and suggested back in February in one of our ‘Introducing’ pieces that he could be a potential successor for McGregor in the future.

It will be interesting to see who the other rumoured clubs are thought to be, whilst Rangers would also have a clearer picture of who they could be up against if they did have to battle hard for his signature.

Having played a starring role for St. Johnstone and becoming one of the first names on the team sheet at McDiarmid Park this season, it could be difficult for the Light Blues to try and convince him to come to Ibrox with McGregor in peak form.

Rangers fans, would you like to see Clark at Ibrox? Do you think he would be a suitable replacement for McGregor in the future? Join in with the discussion by letting us know your thoughts below.

The Chalkboard: Huddersfield must learn from transfer mistakes under David Wagner

[ad_pod ]

Huddersfield’s failings on the pitch this season can easily be attributed to their errors off the pitch before the campaign even began.

In an interview with the Examiner, Town’s chief executive Julian Winter revealed that a lack of communication between the manager and the board led to an ineffective transfer window.

Wasted transfers

The main takeaway from the interview was that David Wagner had been provided with signings that didn’t suit the style of play he wanted to utilise going forward.

The men in charge of transfers at the John Smith’s Stadium recruited based on the system that kept the Terriers up in the 2017/18 season. Their main targets were fast, tricky wingers that would be able to provide service for target men such as Steve Mounie and Laurent Depoitre.

Unfortunately for the board, Wagner was planning on changing his style of play, and failure to communicate that with the higher-ups meant that he was left with a group of players who didn’t suit his philosophy going forward.

Winter said: “From a football perspective we had the idea of doing what we do better and recruiting players into that system.

“David (Wagner) decided to change the system, and I think we lost a little bit of our identity if I am honest with you.”

Can’t make the same mistakes

It is an absolute shambles that nobody from the transfer team liaised with Wagner ahead of Town’s second season in the Premier League.

It was a case of square pegs in round holes once the season kicked off and from that point onwards the Yorkshire club were doomed.

They can’t afford to repeat this error ahead of Jan Siewert’s first full season in charge. They must have a meeting as soon as possible with the German and establish what he wants to do on the pitch, then go out and make signings to accommodate that system.

Pl>ymaker FC Exclusive: Jermaine Jenas reveals he would have snubbed Tottenham for Arsenal if they’d come knocking in 2005…

There’s no use in signing players who don’t fit a system, no matter how good they may be. It is amateurish for Huddersfield to have made such a schoolboy error, and they must now change their ways as they prepare for life back in the Championship.

Hasenhuttl admission proves Southampton’s reported interest in Bolasie isn’t true

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun, Southampton are one of the Premier League clubs weighing up a summer move for Everton winger Yannick Bolasie, but manager Ralph Hasenhuttl’s previous transfer admission proves the club won’t be in for him.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Sun report that Saints, along with top-flight rivals Newcastle United and Crystal Palace, are all considering making a move for the wide man during the window.

The Sun say that the Toffees are looking to sell the 29-year-old on a permanent basis following an mixed loan spells with Aston Villa and Anderlecht this term, and are keen to recoup at least £7m for a player they paid £25m for in 2016.

Marco Silva clearly sees no future for the DR Congo international at Goodison Park, but would he have one at Southampton?

Hasenhuttl comments rule it out

The Austrian manager has already outlined the type of player Southampton will look to sign this summer, and Bolasie doesn’t fit within that criterion in any way, shape or form.

Remember Fraser Forster? No? Well he’s still a Southampton player on 80k-a-week! How can have revive his career? Check out the video below…

Earlier this month, the 51-year-old said, via The Daily Echo: “I guarantee we try to bring players here who see us as the next step in their devolvement.

“The most important goal is they are not too old and sign a first or second contract and see us as a big chance to show up in the Premier League.”

Those words clearly state that the south coast outfit will be looking to sign players in their early 20s with big potential to use Saints as a platform for their future success.

Given Bolasie turns 30 next week he wouldn’t be suitable at all, and signing him would go against everything Hasenhuttl has said and what he wants.

Southampton may well need a boost in attack and in wide areas in particular this summer, but it’s time to firmly file this one under agent talk.

Arsenal: Stephan Lichtsteiner needs to walk this summer

Stephan Lichtsteiner was never meant to be a long-term option for Arsenal when the right-back signed from Juventus, and yet it’s felt like the Swiss defender has been in north London for an eternity.

Since joining the Premier League side on a free from the Italian giants last summer, Lichtsteiner was always seen as a back-up option to Hector Bellerin and a player the Spaniard can learn from off the pitch, and for the most part the 35-year-old right-back has done just that, patiently waiting on the bench and watching the Arsenal number two develop more and more with each passing game.

But after his first full season in England, the Standard report that the Swiss international is likely to move on from Arsenal following the final match of the season against Chelsea in the Europa League final, and for fans, this will be a move many would be happy with.

Lichtsteiner, who is valued at £1.35 million on Transfermarkt, has been rather unspectacular when called upon this season, lacking the pace to keep up with the wingers of the Premier League and showing his age with lapses of concentration in matches, resulting in Unai Emery turning to Ainsley Maitland-Niles as Bellerin’s replacement when the starting right-back tore his ACL in December.

The Swiss defender can get a starting spot somewhere else at a decent team in Europe, but with Emery preferring full-backs who like to bomb up the pitch and create chances, Lichtsteiner is simply playing at the wrong team where his skill set can be used.

Arsenal fans, has Lichtsteiner been a success this season? Let us know!

Between the Lines: Bowyer proves he is the lynchpin holding Charlton together

[ad_pod ]

Lee Bowyer’s achievements as Charlton manager cannot be understated – the former midfielder has guided the Addicks to a play-off final despite ongoing uncertainty surrounding his own future plus those of his players and the club as a whole and for that he deserves enormous credit.

The 42-year-old has got the SE7 outfit playing quality football with goals flying in from everywhere, although, if his interview on TalkSport is anything to go by, he’s done a lot more since being appointed in September than just get the best out of the 18 players in the dressing room each week.

What did he say?

Well, speaking on Wednesday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, Bowyer said:

“At the start of the season, the big thing for me was to try to bring the fans and players together because everyone knows there was a lot of negativity around the football club before I came in.

“I wanted to bring them back together and make sure they were part of the journey that we were going to go on. I honestly did believe that we had a good chance (of promotion) this season and to make our home ground a bit of a fortress.

“When you’re playing and you’ve got good crowds behind you, all the fans want to see is the players giving 100 per cent and that was something I demand from my players.

“The fans see that and then they come back and the place is erupting. The other night (against Doncaster), we filled The Valley for the first time in I don’t know how many years. It’s just been great from start to finish.”

Bowyer binds it all together

Indeed, before Bowyer took the helm, the club was in disarray – the genuine hatred towards owner Roland Duchatelet was tangible and The Valley was a toxic place to be, but he has almost single-handedly turned that around.

Check out what happened when two of Charlton’s best players faced-off in a game of ‘Splat’ in the video below…

Of course, the players deserve plaudits for the performances on the pitch but Bowyer’s positive attitude has, as he was hoping, brought the fans back onside, which may be even more important than simply improving the playing squad.

It’s looking likely that tickets for the crunch clash with Sunderland this weekend will sell out and that’s a prospect that most Charlton fans wouldn’t dare to even dream of when the season started.

Lee Bowyer has been more than just hero in the dugout, he’s been the lifeline the club was crying out for.
