Manager open to short-term West Ham contract after "massive U-turn"

The West Ham United hierarchy have performed a “massive U-turn” over the prospect of appointing one candidate to potentially replace Julen Lopetegui – and it is believed that the manager in question is tempted by a short-term contract.

West Ham considering six-month deal for new manager

Chairman David Sullivan, technical director Tim Steidten and the board are drawing up a managerial shortlist behind the scenes at Rush Green in the event they’re forced to sack under-pressure head coach Lopetegui after their game against Wolves on Monday.

The consensus is that Lopetegui has been given a chance to save his job against their fellow strugglers, with those inside West Ham viewing the encounter as a “cup final” to determine the future of their manager.

Given Gary O’Neil’s job is also hanging by a thread, the match-up has been called “El Sackico” in the build-up to what will be a hotly contested and tense evening at the London Stadium.

That is according to The Telegraph, which also states that West Ham are talking about offering any new manager a six-month contract to prove their worth. The tactician’s position would then be reviewed at the end of this season, with the potential of a longer-term deal on the table.

According to ExWHUemployee, a very reliable informant with sources inside the club, a number of managers have been turned off by this proposal and talks with them haven’t exactly gone swimmingly.

There is an acknowledgement within West Ham that it could be difficult to lure their most desired targets with such a short-term offer (The Telegraph), but one man who is perhaps more open to it than others is ex-Chelsea boss Graham Potter.

Reports suggest that Potter is in pole position for the West Ham job right now, and while the notion they’re set to appoint him turned out to be wide of the mark (Pete O’Rourke), club insider Claret & Hugh believes that the 49-year-old is opening up to the prospect of a limited-time contract.

Graham Potter receptive to short-term West Ham contract

The board, who previously didn’t rate the ex-Brighton boss, have performed a “massive U-turn” behind the scenes as he’s a major contender to succeed Lopetegui.

C&H adds that Potter is “receptive” to a short-term West Ham deal, which surely puts him above every other candidate in the pecking order, as we’ve heard little of other options being ready to consider a six-month trial.

Chelsea's Graham Potter

It is worth noting that the former Ostersunds manager, who led the Swedish outfit from the fourth tier to a place in the Europa League knockout stages in 2018 – famously beating Arsenal at the Emirates in their second leg – likes to implement a brand of attack-minded, possession-based, high-pressing and free-flowing football (football.london), which could appeal to supporters who want to see that style.

Regardless of his less-than-impressive stint at Stamford Bridge, it is important not to sleep on Potter as a top choice, especially considering he falls into the mould of a young and progressive manager.

Mateta was rushed to hospital after Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts kicked the Palace striker in the face in their FA Cup win at the weekend. Now, The Athletic claims Oliver has not been given a refereeing appointment for matchweek 28 (March 8-10) after his decision to initially not send off the Lions keeper on Saturday. Play was stopped for several minutes while the 6ft 4in forward received treatment and after consulting his pitchside monitor, Roberts was eventually red carded by the 40-year-old official.

Mateta needed 25 stitches to his left ear as a result of the challenge, but the 27-year-old said he was "doing well" later that day. While the Frenchman is on the road to recovery, Roberts is facing an extended ban for his actions.

Marsh, bowlers help Renegades ease past depleted Heat

Renegades are building momentum to be right in the mix for a playoff berth

Melbourne Renegades brushed aside a second-string Brisbane Heat with a five-wicket victory in Geelong to notch consecutive victories for the first time this BBL season.Renegades limited a decimated Heat, featuring eight debutants, to 6 for 128 on a sluggish pitch and then cruised to victory with Shaun Marsh smashing a 35-ball 57.After 12 of their players and head coach Wade Seccombe tested positive for Covid-19, Heat’s home clash against Sydney Sixers on Wednesday night was postponed but they were able to ensure this game went ahead following a late scramble for replacement players.Renegades (3-5) have revived their season with wins over shorthanded opponents Melbourne Stars and Heat, leapfrogging to fifth on the ladder.Renegades’ spinners trouble Heat After electing to bowl, Renegades aimed to put the inexperienced Heat under pressure on a slow pitch but their quicks were too wayward. Spinners Zahir Khan and Mohammad Nabi, who substituted paceman James Pattinson, turned things around after the four-over powerplay as Renegades almost predictably turned the tables.Zahir bowled three overs on the trot early to pin down Heat as he unleashed his trademark tricks to give Renegades a stranglehold. Zahir and Nabi did the bulk of the heavy lifting but canny seamer Kane Richardson, who has had a stellar season, enjoyed the sluggish pitch to stymie Heat in the death overs. It certainly wasn’t their toughest test, but Renegades did the job and recovered well after a sloppy start.Lehmann stars in BBL returnThere was, obviously, an unknown over this new-look Heat batting order. But BBL debutant Jack Clayton impressed with a trio of boundaries in his first seven deliveries faced as Heat powered to 0 for 33 after the four-over powerplay. The Queensland contracted player took a liking to pace but the beguiling spin of Zahir proved tougher and he succumbed second ball trapped in front attempting to sweep when on 15.A depleted Heat welcomed the addition of Pakistani batter Fakhar Zaman, who made his BBL debut having been a recent international signing. But his stay was brief, holing out to Zahir as Sam Heazlett – one of two incumbents from Heat’s previous game – and stand-in skipper Tom Cooper fell shortly after to leave the visitors in a hole.Mohammad Nabi made a strong impact against a depleted Brisbane Heat team•Getty Images

They were held together by Jake Lehmann, son of Heat assistant coach Darren Lehmann, and the former Adelaide Striker showcased great maturity as wickets fell around him. Having played 30 BBL games previously, Lehmann posted his maiden T20 half-century in his first BBL game in three years. In a bid to accelerate late, Lehmann shuffled around the crease to great effect and almost batted through the innings ensuring the understrength Heat posted a reasonable total given the circumstances.Vintage Marsh impresses Renegades look a far more formidable team with Shaun Marsh back in the line-up. In his second game back after a serious calf injury, the 38-year-old was in sublime touch marked by a gorgeous on-drive in the third over as he scored 19 of their first 20 runs.Australia T20 World Cup-winning captain Aaron Finch was merely a spectator as Marsh’s class came to the fore with classic square drives then he launched consecutive straight sixes in the eighth over to bring up a half-century off just 31 balls.Finch inevitably got in on the act with a couple of monster sixes off spinner Cooper in the 10th over as Renegades eventually romped to victory in the 15th over. While they’ve taken advantage of two weakened opponents, Renegades are building momentum to be right in the mix for a playoff berth.Grant impresses with ball Quick David Grant made a spectacular BBL debut when he clean bowled Sam Harper in the opening over with a yorker. But against veterans Marsh and Finch, it was tough going for Heat whose pace attack included Ronan McDonald, who played two Sheffield Shield matches for Queensland nine years ago, and 19-year-old Will Prestwidge. They had few answers in a baptism of fire for the newcomers. The pressure was on frontline spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who was thwarted by the experienced batters playing him cautiously. He eventually picked up Marsh but it was too late.Grant, who plays for South Australia in the Sheffield Shield, was a shining light showcasing clever slower balls.Heat (3-6) gave it a crack but just didn’t have the firepower as they slipped below Renegades and into sixth position on the ladder.

Celtic thought they had dream Scott Brown heir, then he left for nothing

Celtic could not break free of Aberdeen at the top of the Scottish Premiership table as they were held to a 2-2 draw at Parkhead on Saturday.

The Hoops and the Dons had both won their openng seven matches in the division ahead of the clash at Paradise over the weekend, but neither side could continue their perfect start.

Reo Hatate and Kyogo Furuhashi had the home team 2-0 ahead at the break, and on course to move three points clear, before goals from Ester Sokler and Graeme Shinnie in the second half rescued a point.

Brendan Rodgers will be hoping that his team can put daylight between themselves and Aberdeen over the coming months to move closer to a fourth straight title.

Captain Callum McGregor, who turned 31 in the summer, is gunning for his tenth Premiership title, having won nine – as part of a 22-trophy haul – in his Celtic career to date.

The former Scotland international, who retired from national duty after the 2024 European Championships, is the current skipper after taking over from iconic Hoops midfielder Scott Brown.

Scott Brown's Celtic career in numbers

In the summer of 2007, the Scottish giants swooped to sign the ‘exciting’ 21-year-old central midfielder from rivals Hibernian for a fee of £4.5m.

It was reported that Rangers were initially expected to secure a deal for the talented youngster, who had played 124 first-team matches for Hibs by the age of 21.

Celtic were able to steal a march on their fierce rivals and landed his services ahead of the 2007/08 campaign, for a record fee between two Scottish sides at the time.

Scott Brown in action for Celtic during the 2016/2017 campaign.

The Scottish dynamo did not take any time to settle into life in Glasgow. In his debut season, Brown produced three goals and four assists in 34 appearances to help his team win the title.

He became a staple of the Celtic midfield for the next 14 years or so and racked up 46 goals and 63 assists in 615 appearances in all competitions before his move to Aberdeen in the summer of 2021.

In those 14 years, Brown won a staggering ten Premiership titles – a feat McGregor hopes to match this term – along with six SFA Cups and seven League Cups.

As the Scotland international, who was capped 55 times by his country, headed into the final years of his career at Parkhead, the club attempted to sign players with a view to being his long-term heir.

Celtic once thought they had found a dream replacement for Scott Brown when they swooped to sign Ivorian starlet Ismaila Soro at the start of 2020.

How much Celtic paid to sign Ismaila Soro

The Hoops reportedly splashed out a fee of £2m to sign the central midfielder from Bnei Yehuda in the January transfer window in the 2019/20 campaign, with Neil Lennon in charge at the time.

He endured a difficult start to his career in Scotland, as the youngster was not selected for a single Premiership game in the second half of the season.

At the start of his first full season with Celtic, Soro admitted that he had problems stepping into Brown’s shoes, as his understudy at the time, but that he remained in Glasgow during lockdown and worked hard to show Lennon that he had the quality to step up.

He claimed it was a “big challenge” to replace what Brown offered in midfield but added that he has a “strong” mentality and would work to make himself a worthy heir.

As you can see in the table above, Soro showed plenty of promise in his first Premiership season, which also happened to be Brown’s last in a Hoops jersey.

The Ivorian gem was more reliable than the veteran Scotsman in his use of the ball and made more tackles and interceptions combined per game on average, whilst winning a similar percentage of his duels on the ground.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

These statistics suggest that Celtic had a dream long-term heir to Brown on their hands, as he had already started to offer similar qualities and attributes as a combative midfield player in the 2020/21 campaign.

Ismaila Soro's Celtic struggles

Despite his promising form under Lennon in his first full campaign in the Premiership, Soro was unable to kick on and become Brown’s replacement after the captain left in the summer of 2021.

Ange Postecoglou came in to replace Lennon in the same summer and the Australian seemingly had different ideas for his midfield, signing James McCarthy ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, and then bringing in Matt O’Riley and Reo Hatate in the January transfer window.

Soro hardly got a look-in that season, featuring in eight Premiership games and starting one league game. In those eight games, the midfielder did not strengthen his case to play regularly, losing 65% of his duels and 76% of his ground duels in the division.

He also only featured in two of the club’s six Europa League group stage matches, as Postecoglou made it clear that the Ivorian was not a part of his long-term plans.

Soro was then sent out on loan to Arouca in Portugal for the 2022/23 campaign, in which he made 22 starts in the Liga Portugal, before being released for nothing in the summer of 2023.

Rodgers replaced Postecoglou that summer and seemingly did not want to give the 26-year-old another chance to impress, despite playing regularly in Portugal in the previous term, and allowed him to move on for nothing.

Celtic had a star who was "similar to Messi", then he left for nothing

The Celtic youngster never lived up to his potential at Parkhead, after being compared to Lionel Messi.

1 ByDan Emery Oct 22, 2024

Soro signed for Beitar Jerusalem on a free transfer and made 30 league starts during the 2023/24 campaign, which shows that he has finally emerged as a key player for a club.

Unfortunately, it did not work out for him as a replacement for Brown, after appearing to be his dream heir under Lennon, but he is now playing regularly again and still has plenty of time left, at the age of 26, to go on and enjoy a successful career.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Adebayor worked alongside Ronaldo during a spell at Real Madrid, allowing him to experience what makes the legendary forward special and how his relentless pursuit of perfection took him to the very top of the game and kept him there for more than two decades.

  • WHAT ADEBAYOR SAID

Abebayor has told of working with Ronaldo and why, in his opinion, the Portugal international is the best to ever do it: “Okay, this is my first session, so I'll go at 8:30 or so and I'll be about two hours early. I arrived at 8:45. All the lights were off, the room was dark, so I was happy, ‘thank God, I'm the first one to arrive here, they will see that I am a professional, they will say that I am diligent’. But then I heard something, a noise in the background. I was like, what's going on? It was my first training session and I didn't know the facilities yet. I asked one of the physiotherapists what was going on downstairs. And he told me that Cristiano Ronaldo was there. I was like, 'Oh, come on, man, this guy’… In the end I was second.

“I went to see him and he said: 'Oh, Emmanuel, nice to meet you, how are you?'. He also told me that he would be with me, that he would help me and that I should tell him if I needed anything. I realised that he was there much earlier. I asked him what time he would arrive and he replied that at 7:30. I said: 'Okay, thanks, good luck, I'll see you later, bye’.”

I told myself to leave him in his own world, so that he could enjoy football and his career. And today he is 40 years old, still in the elite, playing football, at the top… It is simply beautiful to watch. A great example.”

Adebayor only spent a few months at Santiago Bernabeu, on loan from City, but went on to say of that spell giving him a chance to take inspiration from Ronaldo: “For me, having the opportunity to play with him, even if it's only for six months… And he knows the respect I have for his mentality, for the person, for the character he has. He always wanted to be the best. And for me, that's incredible.”

Jason Roy, Adil Rashid tip scales for England in tense series decider

Watching international cricket at Old Trafford, it’s easy sometimes to forget you aren’t in the subcontinent for the atmosphere Asian fans bring to the stadium. But it was the surface upon which England scraped to an achingly tense three-wicket victory over Pakistan which made you feel they might as well have been back playing cricket in the UAE.A whirlwind half-century from Jason Roy helped England grab the momentum in a game that went to the final few deliveries, but his wasn’t by any means the only star contribution to a thrilling contest. Adil Rashid had set up a chase of 155 for the batsmen with a career-best 4 for 35, picking off the Pakistan top three early in the first innings. At that stage, it looked below-par, but a slow burn of a classic was only just beginning to reveal its hand. The visitors, who had opted to bat first after winning the toss, appeared always off-balance, behind the par score, and under pressure, even as they got off to a solid enough start, bringing up the 50 inside the Powerplay for the loss off just Babar Azam. On a pitch that was taking more turn than any previously this series, that was more than good enough, with this never likely to be the sort of run-fest Headingley and Trent Bridge habitually play out. The boundaries, too, were larger at Old Trafford than anywhere else in this T20I series, and both sides knew anything above 170 could become tricky to run down. But once Rashid ploughed through Pakistan, they slumped into consolidation mode, which, in England, seems like a losing strategy. The irrepressible Mohammad Rizwan carried his bat and dragged his side past 150, but the fireworks Pakistan might have been banking on at the death never quite materialised. Moeen Ali played a quiet but vital support act at one end, allowing just 19 in his four, and when Roy and Jos Buttler came out to bat, the spectre of a routine, one-sided chase hung gloomily over the contest.Roy did little to alleviate that impression in a supreme assault on Shaheen Afridi first up, smashing, caressing and placing him for four fours in an over, before taking the attack to Imad Wasim and Usman Qadir. His reputation against spin bowling stands significantly rehabilitated, and soon enough, the asking rate had been brought down below seven. But England began to lose regular wickets to the spinners, and once Mohammad Hafeez was belatedly thrown into the mix, the asking rate crept back up, and Pakistan crept back into the contest. Dawid Malan struggled to keep the runs flowing, and it wasn’t until Eoin Morgan clobbered Hasan Ali at the top and tail of the 18th over that the hosts climbed back into the ascendancy. Pakistan continued to chip away with the wickets, but when Chris Jordan squeezed one into the leg side and hared back for the second, Pakistan had run out of runs to play with.Rizwan’s radiant form
When might it be fair to stop calling whatever Rizwan is doing in T20I cricket a purple patch and just accept he’s rather a good batter in the format? Months ago, most likely. He has now gone past 50 in eight innings in 2021, the joint-most in a calendar year, batting through an innings unbeaten four times: a T20I career record. On another two occasions, he was not out in a successful chase. He carried on that rich vein of form, holding Pakistan’s innings together even as England wreaked havoc at the other end. He was the one who got Pakistan’s innings up and running with successive boundaries off Saqib Mahmood in the second over and a six off the first ball of the fourth. But Rizwan, as has been the case all year, isn’t interested in cameos; he’s more into innings building and – given this this is Pakistan – innings rebuilding. After Rashid knocked both Sohaib Maqsood and Hafeez out in three balls, there was plenty of the latter in evidence. He played second fiddle to Fakhar Zaman while the left-hander stroked a breezy 24, bringing up his own half-century in 38 balls. When Zaman fell, Rizwan took control once more, and Rashid was clobbered for six off the first ball of his final over as Pakistan desperately tried to scrape to a total their bowlers would have a hope of defending. It looked as if Pakistan might have fallen just short, but with 76 off 57 Rizwan had done his best for the cause.Rashid’s record-equalling night
Rashid was instrumental in derailing Pakistan’s chase in the second T20I, and equally detrimental to their hopes of piling on the runs here. The pitch helped, of course; only one T20I has seen more overs of spin than the 26 Old Trafford witnessed, and that came in Dhaka in 2011.The googly that had a lacklustre Azam stumped was a harbinger of how much turn the surface would offer the slower bowlers, but ironically enough, the double-strike in his second over had less to do with Rashid’s guile than poor Pakistani execution. Maqsood holed out to long-on off one that was tossed up and right in his arc, with Hafeez then sending a long hop down deep square leg’s throat. But the pressure Rashid built up over his spell forced errors from the batters, and off the final ball of his spell, he got what he hadn’t yet achieved in his international career: a T20I four-for. His dismissal of Shadab Khan took the legspinner level with Stuart Broad with 65 wickets in the format, behind only Jordan.More importantly, it kept slowing Pakistan down, and in a game that went to the 40th over, that might have made all the difference.

It reacts a lot differently, then you have to weigh in all these different venues,” he said. “I’m sure the boys are very excited to get it in their hands and see it move around, hopefully we can entertain you a little bit over the next wee while.”New Zealand coach Gary Stead said on Monday that Boult was unlikely to feature in the second Test against England at Edgbaston before the WTC final, although Boult himself suggested he had not completely ruled out hope of making an appearance. “Hopefully I can get over there, get settled in and be part of that second Test as well,” he said. After the final, there is a gap in New Zealand’s schedule and Boult will face another two weeks in a hotel on his return home. “If you can keep busy and not let yourself too deep in your thoughts and whine about things then you find a way to get through,” he said. “[We have] been very lucky to be still be working in this current climate so it’s the price you have to play.”He also has his eye on resuming his IPL stint with the Mumbai Indians if the tournament restarts as planned in the UAE in late September. “Looks like it’s moving forward to the UAE where it ran very nicely last year. So if I get the chance I’ll be looking forward to finishing that campaign off nicely,” he added.
