NBP seal third straight win

A round-up of matches played in the President’s One-Day Cup tournament 2012-13 played on April 11, 2013

Umar Farooq11-Apr-2013Mohammad Nawaz’s all-round performance helped National Bank of Pakistan beat Khan Research Laboratories by 12 runs at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. This was KRL’s third straight defeat, and NBP’s third consecutive win. NBP, after being asked to bat, started poorly, with Nasir Jamshed (4) and Sami Aslam (1) back in the hut in quick time. Kamran Akmal (40) and captain Fawad Alam (57) had to do the repair work. NBP, though, then slipped to 95 for 5. Alam hit his 18th List A fifty before being dismissed by Mohammad Irfan. Alam helped add 54 with Nawaz to take his team towards 206.In reply, KRL openers Mohammad Yasin (34) and Tayab Riaz (47) laid a solid foundation with an 82-run stand but three wickets in quick succession put KRL on the back foot. Saeed Anwar Junior was the only batsman who offered some resistance. His 55 was in vain, as Raza Hasan (4-36), Nawaz (2-36) and Imran Khan (31-2) ripped though the line-up to bowl out KRL for 194 in 49.1 overs.Hussain Talat’s hundred and Harris Sohail’s brisk was too much for Port Qasim Authority, as Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited won by 8 wickets at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Asked to bat, PQA were off to a good start, with opener Khurram Manzoor scoring his second hundred of the tournament. Shahzaib Hasan (37), Umar Amin (42), and Tanvir Ahmed (36) chipped in with cameos to power PQA to 297 for 6 in 50 overs. The ZTBL reply was strong, with the openers adding 169. ZTBL lost Sharjeel Khan (81) and Babar Azam (10) in relatively quick time, but Talat (141*) and Sohail (56*) remained unbeaten to take their side home. ZTBL chased down 298 in just 42.2 overs.Water and Power Development Authority, spearheaded by Rafatullah Mohmand’s hundred, defeated Habib Bank Limited by five wickets at the National Stadium Karachi. WAPDA chased down a commanding total of 287 with Rafatullah (102), Saad Nasim (84) and Sohaib Maqsood (66) helping complete the chase with 15 balls to spare.WAPDA had put HBL in to bat. Imran Farhat (11) and Younis Khan (25) fell without making a significant contribution. Two young batsmen, Ahmed Shahzad (112) and Asad Shafiq (79), boosted HBL to a good total. Shahid Afridi scored just 5 while Junaid Khan was the key wicket-taker for WAPDA, taking 4 for 42.Abid Ali’s 91 and Kashif Bhatti’s 4 for 38 helped United Bank Limited beat Pakistan International Airlines by nine runs at Shaheed Mohtarama Benazir Bhutto International Cricket Stadium, Ghari Khuda Bakhsh. Put in to bat, PIA reduced UBL to 53 for 4 at one stage. But the middle and lower orders chipped in. Itmad-ul-Haq (28), Shabbir Ahmed (22), Kasif Bhatti (20) and Mohammad Irshad (23*) guided their team to 222 for 8.PIA, in their reply, began poorly. Agha Sabir (40) and Sheharyar Ghani (52) then tried to resist but Bhatti, along with Mohammad Zubair, shared seven wickets to bowl out PIA in 48.3 overs.

Weather made the difference in chase – Misbah

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has said the weather conditions played a crucial role during their chase in the third ODI in Delhi

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Jan-2013Pakistan’s captain Misbah-ul Haq has said changes in conditions through the course of the day were responsible for India securing a ten-run victory in the third ODI in Delhi. Defeat for Pakistan, who won the series 2-1, came after their attack put on another quality display, restricting India to 167, but their batsmen failed to chase down the target.Delhi had recorded another cold day, the minimum temperature dipping to 1.9 degrees late into the night, which made the run chase difficult for the visitors.”The weather made all the difference. Survival became difficult as the fog descended,” Misbah said. “The pitch, which looked like a batting track, changed its behaviour as the temperature dipped. I did not expect such moisture. So weather played a crucial role.”At the toss, Misbah had said Pakistan were used to playing in cold conditions because Lahore also has similar weather conditions at this time of the year. But the fog along with the cold made it more difficult for his batsmen to settle down during the chase.”It was very cold. We played under such conditions during our domestic T20 league back home and when we were preparing for the India series, but [we’ve not experienced them] in international matches on the subcontinent,” he said. “It was very difficult to bat on. It will be difficult for India and England in the coming series to play under such cold conditions.”When we started the run chase, the Indian seamers got movement and swing, the spinners got the required turn and bounce. When they batted, only Mahendra Singh Dhoni could manage to score runs, when we batted it was opener Nasir Jamshed. Apart from the duo, no other batsman from both the sides could score runs.”Jamshed and Dhoni were the only batsmen with more than 100 runs in the series, making 241 and 203 respectively. While Dhoni’s knock of 113 not out in Chennai was in vain, Jamshed’s hundreds in the first two matches ensured Pakistan’s victory and earned him the Man-of-the-Series award.Pakistan’s failure to capitalise on the start they got in Delhi, thereby missing out on a cleansweep, was a source of some frustration for them but Misbah credited India’s effort. “We missed the chance to sweep the series,” he said. “The Indian bowlers exploited the conditions well. Their fielding was great as they saved at least 30-35 runs. It was an exceptional bowling and fielding effort.”

Cook in Strauss mould – Finn

If there were any doubts about the smooth transition between the captaincy regimes of Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook, they should have been largely dispelled by the comments of Steven Finn ahead of the third ODI of the series between England and South Africa at the Oval.Finn, in many ways, represents the new England. Aged just 23, he has the talent to represent the international team in all formats for much of the next decade. While still perceived as a relatively junior member of the attack, he is quickly emerging as the most dangerous bowler and, having come through the England system from Under-16 level, he is well-placed to speak about life as part of the England development programme.Finn’s experience as an England player also reflects that of many of the next generation. Like Jonny Bairstow and James Taylor, Finn has played under the captaincy of Strauss and Cook and understands that, while the personality of the captain may have changed, the policies and principles that have governed this side for some time have not.Finn actually made his Test debut under Cook, called into the England squad for the tour of Bangladesh in early 2010. But, as a county colleague of Strauss at Middlesex, he has known him for even longer.”The first time I met him was when I was 14,” Finn said. “I was bowling in the indoor nets just before he was going off to the West Indies for a one-day tour, I think.”I jagged one down to him, he ducked under it and fell over. I remember the coach shouting from the back of the net, ‘You just got put on your arse by a 14-year-old!’ That was the first time I ever met him. It was quite a surreal scenario: a 14-year-old bowling to an England player and eventually being in the same team as him.”But Cook was the one who told me I was making my Test debut, so that always holds a great place in my heart. He made it very easy for a young player to come into an England team and just settle in, go about my business. That was the first experience I had of being in an England dressing-room and Alastair was excellent at welcoming me in and making me feel like one of the boys.”I think the transition between the two will be smooth. Alastair has been used to working with Andy Flower as one-day captain. Alastair may have his own plans to introduce to the Test team but I would imagine the fundamentals will be very similar. We won’t see a drastic change and I think that’s good for us as a team.”Finn, like most of the England players, was only informed of Strauss’ decision to retire after the ODI on Tuesday night. He was also among those to be given a letter from Strauss.”It was a surprise,” Finn said. “There were some shocked faces in the dressing room when we were told. Obviously it’s a disappointing time when somebody who has been so great and inspirational for us as a team and a sport steps down from their position. Yes, there were some sad and disappointed people.'”He’s been a massive part of my career. It’s been great to have him there at first slip when he’s come back to Middlesex and to have him there to bounce ideas off and talk about different scenarios has been fantastic.”He didn’t want to be influenced by other people. That’s part of the reason he didn’t talk to the players before his decision. The letter just said he’d had a great time leading us and has been very proud leading us. We’ve been very proud to have him as our captain.”But Cooky is a similar sort of leader to Straussy. He leads from the front as an opening batsman. He goes out and sets the tone, which is very good for a captain. He’s grown into his role as a one-day captain and we’ve played quite aggressive cricket, especially with the way we’ve attacked people with ball and bat. I have a slip quite a lot when I’m bowling, which you don’t always see in ODI cricket. That can only bode well for the future.”While the end result of Tuesday’s ODI was a thumping win for South Africa, Finn made the perfectly reasonable point that the margins between the sides were perhaps not quite as big as might be presumed from the scorecard. England’s opening bowlers, Finn and James Anderson, beat the bat frequently in the early overs and might, with a little bit of luck, have claimed several early wickets.”Amla had a couple of lives,” Finn said. “We could have had either him or Graeme Smith quite early. I thought we bowled well up front and we could have taken a couple of wickets, but it wasn’t to be. Amla is obviously in very good form at the moment and people are allowed to play well against us and we have to find a way to counteract that.”As an opening bowler who has played a fair amount of county cricket in recent times, Finn might be expected to have well-informed views about the potential top-order replacement for Strauss in the Test team. While he was reluctant to be drawn on the issue, it was interesting to note the two names he mentioned: Nick Compton, who is enjoying a prolific season for Somerset, and Michael Carberry, who enjoyed a brief taste of Test cricket alongside Finn in 2010.”There are some excellent guys out there,” Finn said. “Nick Compton has had an excellent season, Michael Carberry has played international cricket as an opening batsman in Bangladesh. We made our debut together. So there are definitely guys out there are more than capable of coming in and playing Test cricket.”

Kaif should be considered for Tests – Kumble

Mohammad Kaif, who last played for India in 2006, could add value to an Indian Test team that is without Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble has said

Mohammad Kaif, who last played for India in 2006, has found support from former captain Anil Kumble. Kaif, Kumble said, could add value to an Indian Test team that is without Rahul Dravid, and will only lose out on more experience once the other seniors retire.”Kaif is only 31, and I believe this is the time when, as a batsman, you are nearing the peak of your powers,” Kumble told . “He has been consistent in domestic cricket, had a good last season, and he continues to be a brilliant fielder. As much as anything else, he has great attitude, so I don’t see why they should not look at him at the Test level. I really am at a loss to figure out where and why he missed out.”Kaif, who had given up the Uttar Pradesh captaincy prior to the 2011-12 season, went on to score 537 runs in the last Ranji Trophy, at an average of 59.66. He has played 13 Tests, spread over a period of six years. His 624 Test runs came at an average of 32.84, with his only century coming in his last series for India, against West Indies in mid-2006. Kaif averaged 56.50 in that series – second only to Dravid.”I think that was the time when a lot of flamboyant cricketers came to the fore – the likes of [Suresh] Raina, Rohit [Sharma] and, a little later, [Virat] Kohli,” Kumble said. “Kaif has always been a solid, disciplined performer, and perhaps in the clamour for flamboyance, the selectors lost track of him.”He has the experience and the technique to do well, as he has shown in the past. I can understand the selectors wanting to look ahead when it comes to the one-day game, but as far as Test cricket is concerned, Kaif is still a very good bat.”

Pune's shopping list

One innings has been enough to make Richard Levi an IPL target•Getty Images

A week ago Richard Levi would probably not have made this list. What a difference 20 overs makes. The international spotlight fell well and truly on Levi following his record-breaking 117 in the second Twenty20 against New Zealand in Hamilton. The IPL has already come calling too. Levi’s agent Arthur Turner told ESPNcricinfo that, “Franchises are interested in his services and offers have been made.” If his 45-ball hundred is any indication of his potential, Levi could well have an outsized impact on the tournament.Ryan ten Doeschate is the only player from an Associate country to have played in the IPL. Kevin O’Brien could well be the second. The Ireland allrounder’s majestic century against England in the 2011 World Cup will live long in the memories of those who had the privilege of watching it. He doesn’t have a particularly great record in Twenty20, averaging 18.58. But he has made a hundred and with a strike rate of 139.46 plus the ability to bowl medium-pace, he could be a useful addition.Jacob Oram might be injured, but when he is on the field, he is one of the better allrounders in T20 cricket. He will be available for the entire seven weeks of the tournament, and having played for Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals in the past, knows how to operate in Indian conditions. In the 2011 World Cup, he took 12 wickets at an average of 18.41. His standout performance came in New Zealand’s upset victory over South Africa in the quarter-finals. In that game, he took 4 for 39 and pulled off a stunning catch to dismiss Jacques Kallis to earn the Man-of-the-Match award. No England players were bought in the 2012 player auction but Ravi Bopara could be worth a second look. Bopara has impressed in the one-day series against Pakistan, scoring two half-centuries in three games and averaging 54. He can also turn his arm over and though he won’t be available for the entire tournament, a month of Bopara could prove a worthwhile investment for Pune.Lonwabo Tsotsobe has been quietly going about his business in limited-overs cricket, and is currently ranked No. 2 by the ICC in ODIs. The left-arm fast bowler has never played in the IPL, and went unsold in the auction, but his career T20 numbers are impressive. He has taken 36 wickets from 35 games at an average of 21.80 and gives away only 6.46 runs an over. His numbers in T20 internationals are even better. In nine games, he has taken 10 wickets at an average of 19.50 and has an economy rate of 6.09. South Africa also have no conflicting international commitments, so Tsotsobe could well join his South Africa team-mate Wayne Parnell in Pune’s squad.Edited by Siddarth Ravindran

Otago win despite Brendan Taylor ton

Otago’s top order fired to help them beat Wellington, while Canterbury defeated Northern Districts in a five-over match

ESPNcricinfo staff31-Dec-2011Otago’s top order fired to negate Brendan Taylor’s century and take their team to a comfortable seven-wicket win over Wellington at the Queenstown Event Centre. Otago paced their chase of 171 well. Opener Aaron Redmond played the anchor role and stuck around till the 16th over. His opening partner, English import Dimitri Mascarenhas, provided the early impetus with a 25-ball 41. Brendon McCullum then kept the run-rate around the 9-an-over mark with his 36 off 20 balls. McCullum and Mascarenhas both hit four sixes each while Redmond gathered runs at around a run-a-ball. When Redmond was dismissed for 48, Otago were well on course for a victory and Craig Cumming took them home with eight balls to spare. The impressive batting performance from Otago meant Zimbabwe captain Taylor’s 101 off just 58 balls went in vain. Wellington were hampered by a sluggish start: their openers failed to get going, then James Franklin hung around for 20 balls to score just 10, and when he was dismissed Wellington were 46 for 3 in 8.4 overs. The next 11.2 overs yielded 124 runs to help them get to a competitive total. Taylor, coming off a half-century in Wellington’s last game, hit five sixes and eight fours in his hundred, the first of this season’s HRV Cup. Grant Elliott scored 49 off 31 balls from the other end but the recovery was not enough to beat Otago.

Weather reduced the match at Blake Park to a five-over affair, and some quick runs from Brendon Diamanti and tight bowling from their bowlers gave Canterbury a 16-run win over Northern Districts. Diamanti’s 29 not out off 13 balls formed the bulk of Canterbury’s score of 49 for 4 from their five overs. Daniel Vettori was the best of Northern District’s bowlers on his return from injury, taking two wickets and conceding just six runs in his over. Vettori, though, started too slowly while opening the batting in the chase, and when he was dismissed for 5 off 10 balls, Northern Districts were left with 30 to get off the last over. Diamanti followed up his batting effort by conceding just one run in his over.

Pakistan could tour Bangladesh in December

Pakistan could tour Bangladesh in December this year as the boards of the two countries discuss the possibility of scheduling a full series when both teams are available

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Sep-2011Pakistan could tour Bangladesh in December this year as the boards of the two countries discuss the possibility of scheduling a full series when both teams are available. “The two boards have worked closely together to schedule a visit by Pakistan in December which is when both teams will be free from other commitments,” Rabeed Imam, the Bangladesh Cricket Board media manager, told the .”Bangladesh is set to host West Indies from October to November this year but have an extensive window to host Pakistan after that until March next year when we are supposed to host the Asia Cup.”With December being the only month when Pakistan could play us, a series may be finalised for that time but the schedule is yet to be finalised. The tour may comprise two Tests, three ODIs and a Twenty20 but that’s all to be confirmed.”Bangladesh last toured Pakistan in 2008 but since then the two sides have played against each other only twice across all three formats, once each in the World Twenty20 2010 and in the Asia Cup 2010.Pakistan were scheduled to visit Bangladesh last year but the series was postponed amid reports of differences between the two boards. “The proposed tour by Pakistan at the end of the year is part of the Future Tours Programme one originally scheduled for last August and later moved to 2011-12,” Imam said.”The BCB and the PCB have always been in a cordial and healthy relationship. You may recall that Bangladesh toured Pakistan in 2008 when other teams weren’t touring and we returned for the Asia Cup later that year as well.”

Northants in control at Lord's

Chaminda Vaas took 5 for 76 and Stephen Peters and Mal Loye shared an opening partnership of 158 as Northamptonshire gained the upper hand against Middlesex at Lord’s

12-Aug-2011
Scorecard
Chaminda Vaas took 5 for 76 and Stephen Peters and Mal Loye shared an opening partnership of 158 as Second Division leaders Northamptonshire gained the upper hand against Middlesex, their closest challengers, at Lord’s.Wicketkeeper John Simpson had lifted Middlesex to a competitive total of 317 with a determined 61 off 158 balls including seven fours but Peters and Loye rode their luck against the new-ball attack of Corey Collymore and Tim Murtagh to lead Northamptonshire to 188 for 2.Peters was the more secure of the two but he was dropped on 38 by Chris Rogers at midwicket off Steven Crook, who eventually did get his man. Peters had moved on to 75 off 146 balls with 12 fours when he got a leading edge trying to turn the ball on the leg side and Crook took a sprawling return catch.Crook struck again in his next over when Rob White tried to hook and only succeeded in gloving a catch to Dawid Malan at first slip but Loye and Alex Wakely denied Middlesex any further success. It took Loye 19 balls to get off the mark and he drove the Middlesex bowlers, Murtagh in particular, to distraction by playing and missing with great regularity but he played some magnificent shots in between to reach 80 off 152 balls with 12 fours.Middlesex had started the second day on 198 for 6 and added another 119, thanks mainly to the steadfast Simpson, who got his head down for almost three and a half hours and was given spirited support by Toby Roland-Jones and Murtagh.Roland-Jones had contributed 24 to a seventh-wicket stand of 51 when he was bowled by a James Middlebrook offbreak. Crook did not get very far before he was caught at silly point off Middlebrook but Murtagh helped Simpson raise another 46 for the ninth wicket.Murtagh had made 27 when he was leg before to Vaas, the former Sri Lanka left-arm swing bowler, who went on to claim Simpson the same way to complete exemplary figures of 5 for 76 in 26.2 overs. It was his second five-wicket haul at Lord’s, his first having come in 2007 when he was playing for Middlesex.
