Borren rues dot balls and run-outs

Netherlands let themselves down with four run-outs and batsmen not converting starts into big scores. The regular fall of wickets meant Netherlands could never really use the batting Powerplay

Sidharth Monga in Chittagong14-Mar-2011There is an image that kept repeating itself, and summed up Netherlands’ game today. Their batsmen often found the length and width to cut, but kept hitting the ball in front of square, to cover-point. It resulted in a statistic that sums up their game: 185 dot balls out of the 278 they faced. In their first game of the tournament, when Netherlands scored 292 against England they faced 150 dot balls out of 305. Not only did they not last their full 50 overs, Netherlands scored off 35 balls fewer. It wasn’t easy for Netherlands. They were playing in Bangladesh for the first time, and no matter how much training you do on tailored pitches, batting on such slow tracks against pretty accurate and smart spinners is tough. More often than not, you don’t succeed in your first attempt, as Netherlands found out. They tried to manufacture shots against the seam bowlers when the ball was new and hard and the fields up. They even sent in a pinch hitter at the fall of the first wicket. It didn’t work.”Our ratio between runs and dot balls, and singles and boundaries was too low today,” Peter Borren, their captain, said. “We need to rotate the strike better. It is difficult here in these conditions, on this wicket, against the spinners, not as easy to rotate the strike as what we normally find. So this is something we have really tried hard to work on, and we came out short today.”It’s hard to practise for those conditions that we came out against today. Three left-arm spinners on a very, very slow wicket, trying to rotate the strike – I think the guys found it difficult, and if guys get in, they find it a little easier. It’s always difficult to start with. Once you are in, it’s easier. Today we got in a little bit, and then got out. Struggled to rotate the strike a bit.”The steady loss of wickets denied Ryan ten Doeschate the opportunity to take the batting Powerplay earlier than the 44th over•Getty Images

Netherlands let themselves down with four run-outs and batsmen not converting starts into big scores. They would find it hard to blame themselves for two of those run-outs. One was a deflection off the bowler’s hand onto the non-striker’s stumps, and the other came out of confusion, with Ryan ten Doeschate trying to farm the strike with the No. 11.”What happens is it takes time to get in against the spinners on slow wickets,” Borren said. “It takes a little bit of getting used to. Today, every time we looked like getting a little bit used to it, we lost a wicket. Four run-outs, which was pretty crucial. It was hard work, the wicket was hard with their bowlers.”The regular fall of wickets meant Netherlands could never really use the batting Powerplay. On the face, it might have seemed ten Doeschate missed a trick by not calling for the Powerplay earlier than he eventually did, in the 44th over with nine wickets down, but to be fair to him there never were two batsmen set enough to utilise it. It could be argued that big batsmen take the risk and the responsibility alone in these situations, but perhaps the need to last the full 50 overs played on ten Doeschate’s mind. He stayed unbeaten on 53.”We kept losing wickets at crucial times,” Borren said. “You try and form a partnership between a couple of guys so they are both comfortable, and then you might take the Powerplay. We left the Powerplay till too late, we were nine down when we took it. The reason we didn’t take it earlier was, we were trying to build partnerships, and just kept failing to do that. Run-outs, a couple of poor dismissals – four run-outs, it’s pretty criminal at this level, and something we are really disappointed with.”

All-round Sri Lanka thump Netherlands

Sri Lanka’s batsmen amassed 351 and their bowlers did an efficient job as they cruised to a 156-run victory in their World Cup warm-up match against Netherlands in Colombo

ESPNcricinfo staff12-Feb-2011
ScorecardDilhara Fernando picked up four wickets as Sri Lanka bowled Netherlands out for 195•AFPIt was a perfect day for Sri Lanka at the SSC in Colombo, as none of their senior players had to strain while the younger batsmen and back-up bowlers got some handy runs and wickets under their belts. After winning the toss, Sri Lanka amassed 351 without requiring either captain Kumar Sangakkara or vice-captain Mahela Jayawardene to have a bat.The opening combination of Upul Tharanga and Tillakaratne Dilshan showed what they are capable of with a 117-run stand. The two have five century partnerships in ODIs and average 51.20 as an opening pair. The brisk start allowed Sri Lanka to experiment with their batting line-up. Thilan Samaraweera was pushed up to No. 3 with Angleo Mathews, Chamara Silva, Chamara Kapugedera and even Nuwan Kulasekara batting ahead of Sangakkara and Jayawardene.Dilshan led the way, his 78 coming at a run a ball, with 12 boundaries, including some typically unorthodox shots. Samaraweera, who is often accused of batting too slowly to be successful in ODIs, got his 60 in just 59 balls, a fair clip faster than his career strike-rate of 68.67. Silva and Kapugedera both got quick half-centuries; something that will please Sri Lanka as the inexperience in their middle order has been a bit of a worry. The Sri Lankan innings was paced perfectly, with the batsmen making maximum use of the batting Powerplay, smashing 61 runs between the 44th and 48th over. From Netherlands’ point of view, only a couple of their bowlers managed to come out of the onslaught with respectable figures. Seamer Mudassar Bukhari took 2 for 52 in his 10 overs, while left-arm spinner Pieter Seelaar was the most economical of the bowlers, going at 4.40 in his 10 overs.Sri Lanka’s back-up bowlers had recently done the job for them in the third ODI of the home series against West Indies and continued their form in the warm-up match. Dilhara Fernando took 4 for 43, while Rangana Herath picked up a couple of wickets. The one positive Netherlands will take out of the game was the form of Tom de Grooth, who scored 76. Their top order didn’t contribute much, with their star player Ryan ten Doeschate falling to Thisara Perera for one.De Grooth’s knock ensured Sri Lanka were at least given a full-day’s work-out, as Netherlands lasted till the 48th over in their chase.

Unexpected reversals leave IPL preparations in disarray

The BCCI has convened a special general body meeting (SGM) in Mumbai on Saturday to discuss the reappointment of the board’s disciplinary committee. The tenure of the committee, which is investigating the conduct of former IPL chairman Lalit Modi, expired at September’s annual general body meeting. The board, however, failed to reappoint or reconstitute it, technically stripping it of its existence. The BCCI secretary N Srinivasan told PTI news agency that the reappointment of the committee was “a minor thing” which had been pointed out by Modi’s lawyer, Mehmood Abdi last month. The SGM, ostensibly to tackle a “minor” issue, will be held in the backdrop of several major, unexpected reversals for a board that is usually used to getting its own way. One of the BCCI’s more serious challenges is the stuttering preparation for IPL 2011.The past six months have been dogged by the controversial termination of two franchises (Rajasthan Royals and the Kings XI Punjab), and a protracted ownership-pattern dispute over a third, (the new Kochi franchise). As a result of the controversies, the player auction has been delayed by several months and going by the BCCI’s legal battles, could well be held in the middle of the 2011 World Cup.The confusion over the eventual number of teams that will be involved next season affects every component of the world’s most lucrative domestic league: its teams/ franchises, its players and its very structure. IPL 2011 now faces several scenarios:

  • If both expelled teams take part in the player auction, it will become much harder to prevent them at a later date from playing in the IPL, as any players who sign with them would then be left without a team.
  • The league is currently slated to have eight teams playing each other home and away, just like in the first three seasons. A ninth team would naturally result in an unbalanced schedule, while 10 teams could increase the overall number of fixtures and once again rake up the issue of player burnout.
  • The board is considering delaying the player auction until March, by which time its legal issues are expected to be resolved, and it will know how many teams will be playing. That would, however, result in the player auction clashing with the World Cup and will prevent teams from being able to use their players in promotions and advertising campaigns, potentially causing them to breach their obligations to their sponsors.

Rajasthan are already back in the league less than two months after being ‘terminated’ due to an interim stay order from Justice Srikrishna, the arbitor in the case. While the board has appealed against Srikrishna’s ruling to the Bombay High Court, legal opinion suggests it will be difficult to overturn his order. There is also believed to be a sentiment within the IPL governing council that the cases of Rajasthan and Punjab are “reasonably strong”, and that the BCCI’s leadership is going after too many people at the same time.Srikrishna has restored Rajasthan’s rights under the franchise agreement, including the right to take part in the player auction. Srikrishna also stated that the BCCI could not make any rules that would adversely affect Rajasthan, for example changing any of the league’s rules, hampering the board’s ability to alter its plans as the legal cases unfold. Srikrishna may have stepped down from the Punjab hearing, but it is believed that the stay in favour of Rajasthan could have a bearing on their case when it comes up for hearing.Punjab accused the board of “deliberately” delaying its proceedings so that the December 6 deadline for the retention of select players in each team would expire, leaving Punjab looking in from the outside. The Bombay High Court ruled in Punjab’s favour, and extended the deadline to December 8, handing the BCCI yet another setback, and suggesting Punjab has a case against the board. The longer the cases drag on, the harder it becomes for the board, and the franchises, to plan for the 2011 tournament.

Shehzad stars as Habib Bank go top

A round-up of the third day of the fourth round of matches in Division One of the Quaid-E-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Nov-2010Habib Bank Limited kept pace with Water and Power Development Authority at top of the table after the third round with a ten-wicket thrashing of Sialkot at the Jinnah Stadium. Their hero was 19-year-old Ahmed Shehzad, who played four one-day internationals for Pakistan last year. Shehzad first polished off the Sialkot tail with his legspinners, finishing with 4 for 20 to leave HBL a target of 161. Then, he opened the batting for HBL and powered them to victory with his fifth first-class century, a hurricane effort with four sixes and 17 fours. Bilal Shafayat, who also plays for Nottinghamshire, made a more patient 48 as HBL knocked off the target in 24.5 overs. At the Diamond Club, Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited completed an innings-and-12-run victory over Islamabad and moved to third spot. Starting the day trailing by 135, and having already lost four second-innings wickets, Islamabad could at best hope to salvage a draw. Overnight batsman, Zeeshan Mushtaq, made his third first-class century, but there was little support from his team-mates except for Rashid Amin (36). The pair put on 85 for the sixth wicket to take Islamabad within 21 runs of making ZTBL bat again, but left-arm quick bowler Mohammad Khalil and left-arm spinner Raza Hasan sparked a lower-order collapse – Islamabad sank to defeat as the last five wickets went down for nine runs.In a thrilling match at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, 22-year-old fast bowler Asad Ali scythed through the Rawalpindi batting to snatch a 35-run win for Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited. Rawalpindi started the day on top, at 3 for 1 chasing a tiny target of 146. The day started well for them as their captain Babar Naeem and No. 3 Haseeb Azam guided the total to 47 for 1. After a couple of quick wickets, Naeem and Muzammil Nizam kept Rawalpindi on course for victory, taking them to 87 for 3. A spectacular collapse followed as Rawalpindi had no answer to Asad and Imran Ali – seven wickets going down for 23 runs, the final five for only six runs. It was SNGPL’s second win of the season and leaves them in fourth spot. There was no such excitement at the Iqbal Stadium, where Faisalabad and Pakistan International Airlines played out a draw. The first innings was completed about an hour into the final day’s play, when Faisalabad were bowled out for 350, trailing by 88. Led by Shoaib Malik’s half-century, PIA made a brisk 186 for 4 before declaring. Faisalabad had little chance of chasing down the target of 275 in 25 overs, and blocked their way to 51 for 2 before the match was called off.The match at the National Stadium was also drawn, though it was a more interesting affair. Fawad Alam hit his ninth first-class hundred in a one-man show for National Bank of Pakistan, making 138 out of the 241 NBP managed, with six of the batsmen making single-digit scores. Karachi Blues were left with a target of 299 in 60 overs, which they set about chasing with gusto. Three quick wickets, though, reduced them to 68 for 3 after which they were more sedate. Akbar-ur-Rehman made a breezy maiden first-class hundred and put on 155 with Ahmed Iqbal, who scored a dour 52. Karachi ended up on 246 for 5 when the match was called off.

Leeds: Kieran Maguire impressed by financial accounts

Financial expert Kieran Maguire has hailed Leeds United after they shared their 2020/21 accounts, Football Insider report.

The Lowdown: Profit

The Whites, owned by Andrea Radrizzani and the San Francisco 49ers, announced a profit of £26m for the 2020/21 campaign in the week, in what was their first season back in the Premier League after 16 years.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-41/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-04-02T155252Z_391313781_UP1EI421841M9_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-SOU-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Leeds, who made a loss of £62m in their Championship winning season, posted a turnover of £171m this time around, which was helped by new partnerships with Adidas and shirt sponsor SBOTOP.

The club also brought in just over £20m in merchandise sales, with £15m coming in from other commercial sources. [FI]

The Latest: Maguire reacts

Maguire, who contributes for Sky Sports, was talking to FI regarding Leeds’ annual numbers.

He labelled them as ‘very encouraging’ and pinpointed the club’s merchandise sales, describing them as ‘outstanding’.

“These are very encouraging figures.

“They had no matchday income or catering income, which together I would expect to be the thick end of £25m.

“When they get matchday income back, it gives them the opportunity to grow. Commercial revenue will only grow as well.

“For me, the outstanding figure was merchandise. To sell £20m worth of merchandise during Covid is indicative of the strength of the fanbase.”

The Verdict: Premier League status crucial

The two contrasting accounts just go to show how crucial Premier League football is to the club, with the Whites recording just their second profit in ten years.

And Leeds took a big step towards ensuring a third season in the division by beating Watford on Saturday.

Another year in the Premier League, along with a possible big-money move to Barcelona for Raphinha, could allow the Whites to back Jesse Marsch in his first transfer window at Elland Road, but there is still work to be done on the pitch before the club can think about any eye-catching signings.

Rangers must brutally axe Joe Aribo

Rangers suffered a gigantic blow in their hopes of landing the Premiership title for a second successive year as they lost 2-1 at Ibrox on Sunday.

They were beaten in the Old Firm clash as they let an early lead, handed to them by Aaron Ramsey’s near-post strike in the opening minutes, slip.

Gio van Bronckhorst’s men found themselves 2-1 down at half-time and were unable to turn it around in the second 45 as they huffed and puffed to no avail.

Time’s up

One player who struggled badly in the game was midfielder Joe Aribo and his time at Ibrox may now be coming to an end.

Van Bronckhorst must brutally axe him this summer and sanction a move back down south as his performances have been nowhere near good enough in recent months. He has not stepped up to the plate in the crunch time of the season and it is costing the Gers dearly in the title race.

Premier League side Crystal Palace are reportedly eyeing up a swoop for the Nigeria international at the end of the campaign. They are said to be lining up a £10m offer for the ex-Charlton man and the Gers must snap their hands off for it.

Ezri Konsa once dubbed Aribo’s style as “languid” and that word sums up his recent displays for the Ibrox giants as he has been looked way off the pace. This was illustrated perfectly in the defeat to Celtic, as he failed to create a single chance and managed one shot at goal, whilst failing to complete a single dribble in his 90 minutes on the pitch – as per SofaScore.

Journalist Zino Mulla called him “useless” for Nigeria in their recent World Cup qualifiers and his recent form for the Gers has been in line with that criticism.

He has zero goals and one assist in his last 10 outings for Rangers in all competitions, with only two of his performances coming in at SofaScore ratings higher than 7.0. In his last 13 Premiership appearances, he has produced one goal and three assists despite playing in a number 10 role and out wide in a front three, which is far from good enough.

The 25-year-old’s lack of consistency has let him down and that is why Van Bronckhorst must now axe him from the club ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, especially if the club can get £10m back in exchange for him with one year left on his contract.

That money can then be reinvested into multiple positions to hopefully strengthen the team and improve their chances of winning the title next term.

West Indies A in control after hosts collapse

Scorecard
Bangladesh A squandered the fightback that had given them the upper hand on the first day with a hapless batting performance on the second. Only three of their batsmen managed to get to double-figures, indicating their extent of struggle against the West Indies A bowlers.Captain Nazimuddin top scored with 33, Marshall Ayub, who made 21, supported him in a stand of 53 and Suhrawadi Shuvo, responsible for bowling out West Indies for 285, contributed 23. Each of the five West Indies bowlers managed at least a wicket, with offspinner Shane Shillingford bagging 4 for 30. Bangladesh folded for 125, conceding a lead of 160, and there was more damage to follow.West Indies, keen to avoid any slip-ups, put in a strong performance in their second innings, finishing the day on 162 for 2, extending their lead to 322. Devon Smith starred at the top of the order, making 62 while Kirk Edwards chipped in with an unbeaten 55. With an in-form Darren Bravo at the other end and the luxury of an already competitive lead, West Indies are firmly in control. For Bangladesh, the saving grace on a disappointing day was Shuvo, who extended his match tally to eight wickets and resisted with the bat.

Everton transfer news on Johnson

Many Everton fans have been left lauding some transfer news that has emerged on Brennan Johnson.

As per The Daily Mail, the Goodison Park faithful have now joined Newcastle United, West Ham United and Brentford in the race to sign the Nottingham Forest ace, who could be sold in the January transfer window if their £20m valuation is met.

He has also being monitored by Tottenham Hotspur, in what could turn out to be a real Premier League battle for his signature.

The 20-year-old has so much potential, and has played in every single game in the Championship so far this season, scoring five goals and making a further four assists from midfield (Transfermarkt).

Thus, his stock is only going to rise, and so getting him for £20m now could turn out to be a real bargain in the future.
