Rob Lee claims there’s no hope at Newcastle

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Rob Lee, who is a Newcastle United Hall of Famer, believes many fans are losing hope in their club because they can’t see any change on the horizon.

The Magpies had never been relegated from the Premier League until Mike Ashley took over the club and since then, they have experienced two relegations in 2009 and 2016.

After Rafa Benitez left Newcastle, the board appointed Steve Bruce as his replacement and the former Sunderland manager has failed to improve the side in two seasons, despite significant investment on the pitch.

He has bought the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin and Joelinton, the latter for a club-record fee of £40m, but that has not stopped Newcastle from finding themselves in a relegation tussle this term.

Speaking on why many fans are now falling out of love with Newcastle and what they want to see from their club, Lee told FFC:

“Fans are losing interest in Newcastle because they can’t see any change; they can’t see anything happening at the club.

“They can’t see any excitement coming, they can’t see anything in the future and I can’t see any hope of change, and you need hope in football.

“I don’t care if we change the manager or players because what we need is to change the owner.”

Newcastle have been involved in a legal battle with the Premier League regarding their failed takeover last summer, with it about to go through arbitration.

Aston Villa: Club worried over Sanson

Aston Villa are reportedly worried they have made a mistake regarding midfielder Morgan Sanson.

That’s according to an exclusive report from Football Insider, who have been informed from a club source that the Villa hierarchy feel they “haven’t done their homework” over the Frenchman.

Sanson difficult to manage

Sanson joined in the January window on a four-and-a-half-year deal from Marseille but has made just two starts under Dean Smith.

The 26-year-old has made eight appearances in total, picking up three yellow cards in just 224 minutes of Premier League action so far.

The report claims that the midfielder is very difficult to manage, with two of his former agents deciding to let him go.

Transfer Tavern take

Smith was hoping Sanson would improve his midfield ranks, however, he’s struggled to really make his mark in the Midlands so far.

Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, it’ll be interesting to see what Villa decide to do with Sanson, should these inside sources prove accurate.

Who knows, the club may even decide to cash in on him less than 12 months into his Villa Park career if they feel they have made a big mistake.

Everton fans shocked at Keane omission

Many Everton fans have been left stunned at Gareth Southgate’s decision to omit Michael Keane out of the latest 26-man England squad.

As per the official Twitter page of the Three Lions, Southgate has decided to go with Conor Coady, Eric Dier, Harry Maguire, Tyrone Mings and John Stones as options in the centre of defence instead, while Keane’s Goodison Park teammate Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been selected as one of the forward options up top.

The former Burnley man has been enjoying a fine season with the Merseyside club so far in the 2020/21 term, winning no fewer than 3.8 of his duels per game in the Premier League while also averaging 4.6 clearances and 1.4 interceptions a match (Sofascore).

Nonetheless, Southgate clearly thinks that there are better options for him at centre-back than Keane.

Celtic set to put major investment into the squad

This summer is going to be one of the most crucial in Celtic’s recent history. They have just surrendered their grasp on the SPFL title and are in need of reinvigorating Parkhead.

First on Dermot Desmond’s to-do list will be to find a new manager for the playing squad. Neil Lennon left his post around three weeks ago and they are still no closer to discovering his successor.

There is also set to be plenty of movement in the hierarchy. Peter Lawwell is due to retire at the end of the season and be replaced by Dominic McKay. Nick Hammond could also depart if you believe reports.

As a result, a new director of football role is set to be appointed with that role potentially being handed to Fergal Harkin.

It will be a summer of change but one man we won’t see depart is Desmond. Answering questions in a rare media appearance on Tuesday evening, he claimed that his shares were not for sale.

Instead, it looks as though he could plough further investment into the football club. Speaking on A Celtic State of Mind podcast last week, Paul Dykes shared some rather interesting news from one of his sources.

Dykes commented: “I was speaking to someone who is close to the club and who reckons there’s going to be an incredible investment in the Celtic coaching staff and playing staff moving into next season.”

Considering the Hoops won’t have the prize money that comes with winning the SPFL or the finances that come from the Champions League, it bodes well to hear that the kitty isn’t completely empty.

For supporters, this should be incredibly exciting news. Of course, the Bhoys spent over £4m on both Albian Ajeti and Vasilis Barkas last summer, but if they put significant investment into the playing squad and bring in a new director of football, their recruitment could improve significantly.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-boupendza-mcgeady-marsch-mccarthy” title=”Latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

Football Insider has also revealed that a team of scouts and analysts are set to follow Harkin through the door so it’s certainly believable that Celtic are wanting to spend more.

After losing your grasp on the title, the answer is usually to spend. However, merely flashing your cash is easier than actually using that money wisely.

With fears about the futures of both Odsonne Edouard and Kristoffer Ajer still lingering in the background, the report that Celtic won’t be afraid to spend on the playing squad this summer should be music to the ears of the Green Brigade.

The next transfer window represents the ideal chance to put the mistakes of the last 12 months to rest; Desmond must act decisively but intelligently.

His money simply has be to be used wisely if Celtic want to usurp Rangers again.

Hay singles out 4 Leeds players v Chelsea

Phil Hay has singled out four players at Leeds United for praise in their 0-0 home draw with Chelsea in the Premier League at Saturday lunchtime.

As per a tweet from The Athletic journalist, he thought that Diego Llorente, Kalvin Phillips, Pascal Struijk and Tyler Roberts were all ‘impressive’ against Thomas Tuchel’s team.

Leeds impress defensively

Considering the form of the Blues going into the game, Marcelo Bielsa’s side certainly did well to keep them at bay at Elland Road.

Leeds’ two central defenders and central midfield players were vital in making sure that the ball did not hit the back of their net, with Llorente making the most clearances (three) out of any Whites player to have set foot on the pitch, while each of the other players recorded at least one (Sofascore).

Struijk blocked no fewer than three shots on his goal, more than any other Leeds players combined, while he also made three interceptions, as Phillips topped the tackling stats with four in total (Sofascore).

Each player did their bit own individual jobs for the team and, as a collective, they were pivotal in making sure that the Yorkshire club came away from the match with a point and a clean sheet.

Update on Alioski may mean Leeds will snub Amavi

As Leeds United continue to browse the transfer market this month, they find themselves linked to left-back Jordan Amavi.

According to French outlet Foot01, the Whites are amongst those interested in the £9million-valued Marseille star, who is now available for pre-contract negotiations. Amavi looks set to leave the Ligue 1 outfit and Leeds were reported to be very much in the race for his signature.

However, a recent Phil Hay update could hint that a deal is off for the out of favour 26-year-old. The Athletic reporter tweeted that the Whites are in talks with Egzjan Alioski over new terms on his current £55,000 per week contract.

With both the Macedonian and Leif Davis on the books, it could now mean that Victor Orta and co are making a U-turn on their reported interest in Amavi. If Alioski signs a new deal, he may well continue to be Marcelo Bielsa’s first choice left-back, with 21-year-old Davis still to fully break into the first team squad.

According to Transfermarkt, Alioski has contributed two goals and six clean sheets in his 17 Premier League appearances so far this season. Leeds have hit a dip recently but their 2-1 win over Newcastle sees them return to positive form in their returning top flight campaign.

Transfer target Amavi has made just nine Ligue 1 appearances for Marseille this season, due to a red card suspension and recent injury. He is currently suffering a torn muscle injury and has missed ten matches across all competitions because of it, according to Transfermarkt.

Whilst Leeds looked to be a potential destination for Amavi, there may not be any room for him at the inn if the Whites keep hold of Alioski. Despite the attraction of not having to pay a transfer fee, having three left-backs all fighting for the same spot would be an unnecessary headache Bielsa does not need to have.
