Rangers should do all they can to keep Daniel Candeias

[ad_pod ]

Rangers have “reluctantly but respectfully” allowed Daniel Candeias the chance to talk to Genclerbirligi, Steven Gerrard has told The Daily Record.

What’s the story?

The Daily Record reported that the winger has concerns about becoming a squad player under Gerrard. And with the Turkish top-flight side’s interest clearly quite concrete, the Portuguese ace is said to be considering their offer.

Gerrard has plenty of wide options at the moment, with Jake Hastie, Sheyi Ojo, Greg Stewart, Jordan Jones and Scott Arfield, so can’t guarantee game time for Candeias. That depth of talent looks like it could be a blessing and a curse.

Despite being open to the offer from Genclerbirligi, Candeias has reported to training today, as Gerrard gets his squad ready for Progres Niederkorn in the Europa League qualifiers. This could be a sign that the 31-year-old is yet to make a decision on where his future lies.

Keep Morelos happy!

Candeias and Alfredo Morelos have made no secret of their bond off the pitch. With the Colombian striker unable to speak English fluently, he’s lent heavily on Candeias and the two have grown close.

The 22-year-old is “shattered”‘ at the prospect of potentially losing his close friend from Ibrox, according to Football Insider. As well as being good friends off the pitch, the two have brought the best out of each other on the park too.

The duo were two of three big constants at the club in Gerrard’s debut campaign as a gaffer, with captain James Tavernier also performing excellently in the same period.

Candeias might not be guaranteed as much football this year and he will be 32 by the end of the next campaign, but he did muster up 12 assists last season, so losing him would harm the creativity that helps contribute to Morelos’ monster goals tally.

If the Gers want to do everything they can to both keep Morelos happy off the pitch and smashing goals in on it, then selling Candeias could well turn out to be one huge mistake.

Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp is making a mistake loaning Marko Grujic for the season

If there’s one area where Liverpool are well-stocked, it’s central midfield.

From Jordan Henderson to Naby Keita to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the current Champions League holders are stacked in midfield with seven players who can all naturally play there and all of whom can deliver something unique to the midfield three that Jurgen Klopp typically deploys, yet there is one player who is likely to not get a shot at playing in this exclusive group next season, Mark Grujic.

The Serbian midfielder enjoyed a fine season away on loan at Hertha Berlin last season where manager Pal Dardai called Grujic via the Bundesliga’s official website “by far the best midfielder at Hertha Berlin in 20 years”, and with the news from the Liverpool Echo that the 23-year-old is to depart Anfield again for the season, Klopp could be making a mistake.

Comparing Grujic to the three Liverpool midfielders who made the most appearances last season using stats from WhoScored; Georginio Wijnaldum, Henderson and Fabinho, it’s quickly apparent that the Serbian midfielder had a better defensive season than any of the Reds trio, making the most interceptions (1.3), clearances (2.3) and blocks (0.3) in the group.

Grujic also averaged the most key passes per game out of the three Liverpool midfielders at 0.7 per game as well scoring the most goals in the season with 5, and standing the tallest out of the four players means that the Serbian has also registered the most aerial duels won with 3.2 per game.

With such a congested midfield, it makes sense why Klopp is opting to loan out Grujic for the year, but we believe that the German manager is making a mistake letting the Serbian go for the season when he can clearly offer something new to what Liverpool already have at the club.

Liverpool fans, should Grujic remain at the club this season? Let us know!

Transfer Focus: Leeds mustn’t be fooled by Mavididi’s pedigree

[ad_pod ]

According to TEAMtalk, Leeds are one of a number of clubs looking to loan Juventus striker Stephy Mavididi.

On the surface of things signing a Juve player who used to play for Arsenal would be fantastic for any Championship side, but a further look into the 21-year-old’s record shows that he is set up to flop at Elland Road if Victor Orta decides to bring him in.

What’s the story?

Mavididi joined the likes of Wojciech Szczesny and Patrick Vieira by swapping the London club for the Italian giants, but so far he hasn’t found any of the success that the aforementioned pair did.

The Englishman has made just one appearance for the Bianconeri, and he doesn’t seem to be progressing in the way that the Old Lady will have hoped.

Just six goals in Serie C for Juventus B is a poor return for a player who hopes to play at the top level.

Mustn’t be fooled

The Yorkshire club mustn’t be fooled by his pedigree when looking at making an approach for the striker.

When you see that a player has played for both Arsenal and Juventus by the age of 21, it’s easy to think that he must be something special, but in Mavididi’s case, that is far from the truth.

Six goals in Serie C, combined with two goals in 15 appearances for Charlton in 2017/18, shows that he doesn’t have what it takes to lead the line at a club like Leeds United.

Of course, Marcelo Bielsa is the master of bringing the best out of young players, but this may be a step too far for the Argentine. The Whites are headed into their most important season in years, and if they choose to trust Mavididi and give him a key role, it could very easily backfire.

Mavididi can count himself a little fortunate to have played for Arsenal and Juventus in his young career as his performances on the pitch haven’t shown that he is worthy of turning out for either of those European giants.

Maddison’s England exclusion can take him to new heights

[ad_pod ]

100 chances created. That’s the remarkable tally that James Maddison clocked up in the Premier League this season. It beat even the very best in the division as he topped the list for creativity.

Yet somehow, that isn’t enough to get you in the England team. This side has been heralded as one picked on form and merit, rather than the club you play for. However, that certainly hasn’t been the case with Maddison, who rather unfairly has been left out of the squad for the Nations League in June.

For all too long, the Three Lions have lacked a player like the 22-year-old. He’s someone capable of grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck and injecting a sense of life into proceedings from a central area.

But despite his exclusion, it can serve as a positive going forward and could take the Foxes man to a whole new level.

Southgate knows best

When it comes to young English players there aren’t too many people with better knowledge and expertise than Gareth Southgate.

You only need to look at the chances he’s given the likes of Jadon Sancho and Callum Hudson-Odoi this season.

Maddison was called into the squad to face Croatia and Spain last October but didn’t actually play, so it’s clear he’s on the mind of the former Middlesbrough boss.

After missing out, the attacking midfielder will likely go to the U21 European Championship instead this summer. England are arguably one of the favourites and with the Leicester midfielder in their ranks, that will only be elevated further.

Southgate has made a brave call in not selecting him for the senior side but it could be a masterstroke.

He knows the benefits of a youth tournament and the experience some of the country’s very best young talents have gained in the past has been significant.

England’s World Cup wins at U17 and U20 level have seen players go onto thrive in the Premier League and also selected for the senior national side.

As such, Maddison’s likely appearance at the U21 Euros could be a game changer for him.

That tournament will arguably be even more competitive than the Nations League and will also boast some incredibly strong teams, specifically France and Spain.

Maddison is likely to be a part of England’s plans going forward and the more tournament experience their young players gain the better.

With the Nations League only being held over the space of a few days, he’d learn far more from a month long competition. On this occasion, Southgate’s got it right.

Mixed opinions: West Ham fans fail to agree on season debate

[ad_pod ]

A total of 49 points from 37 matches has left West Ham United in 11th position in the Premier League ahead of their final fixture of the campaign.

The Hammers could finish as high as ninth, but that scenario would rely on them beating 10th-placed Watford this weekend and seeing Leicester City, who occupy ninth ahead of their clash with Chelsea, lose their last game.

It has been an up-and-down campaign for the capital outfit, but they have taken seven points from their last three Premier League matches – drawing with Leicester City before beating Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton in their last two.

And the London club’s fans have been on social media debating whether Manuel Pellegrini’s first campaign can be considered a success.

Whilst some believe that it has been a decent season considering the circumstances, others feel that it has been largely disappointing.

West Ham United: Manuel Pellegrini should build defence around commanding Issa Diop

Manuel Pellegrini pulled another rabbit out of his hat on Saturday, when his West Ham United team made history in becoming the first visiting team to win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The headlines were won by Michail Antonio and his bizarre celebration, yet it was Issa Diop’s heroics which surprisingly kept Spurs at bay.

Indeed, it was almost like the 22-year-old’s crowning moment in a West Ham United shirt. Granted, he didn’t have Harry Kane to face, but if recent results have proven anything, Son Heung-min or Lucas Moura are no lesser a threat. Diop proved to be ready for the challenge and proved why the Hammers shelled good money for him last summer.

The French defender was an absolute impenetrable rock at the back, hounding Spurs’ attackers and always averting disaster for West Ham. He made 8 clearances, 6 interceptions, 2 tackles and 11 ball recoveries (stats via Fotmob) in a stunning defensive display to earn the Hammers bragging rights in the London derby.

If his commanding display proved anything, Manuel Pellegrini should set-up his defence to Diop’s advantage next season. Certain defensive reinforcements, possibly in a right-back and another centre-back, are desperately required. Pellegrini should get players who can gel well with the Frenchman, who’s shown traits of a top-class defender all season long.

If the Hammers want to compete high up in the  Premier League next season, they need an uncompromising defence. Diop possesses the ability to be their general to thwart off danger, but requires quality around him to prove himself as a defensive leader.

A bargain at a reported £22m.

Rangers plotting swoop for Zander Clark

Allan McGregor has been nothing but outstanding for Rangers this season since making his return to Ibrox last summer. The 37-year-old has put in some top quality performances over the campaign and has played a huge role in how well the Light Blues have done over the last ten months or so.

However, the former Scotland international’s playing days are surely limited and it appears Steven Gerrard has already started to plan back-up options for when the time comes, with one impressive individual thought to be on his radar.

What’s the News?

According to a report by Football Insider, Rangers are thought to be plotting a move for St. Johnstone’s Zander Clark this summer.

The goalkeeper has been impressive this season for the Scottish Premiership side and the Light Blues are thought to be keeping tabs on him as they see him as an ideal back-up to the ageing McGregor.

However, Rangers are not believed to be the only club interested, as a number of clubs from either side of the border are said to be keen, although none have been named.

The Verdict:

As mentioned, Clark has been magnificent for St. Johnstone this season and has put in a number of solid contributions as he looks to help them finish top of their part of the Scottish Premiership split, as they just missed out on a place in the top-six.

The 26-year-old has put in a number of eye-catching performances, including keeping five consecutive clean sheets before the winter break, which had led to calls for him to be included in the Scotland national team set-up for their Nations League matches.

We at the Transfer Tavern have also been singing his praises and suggested back in February in one of our ‘Introducing’ pieces that he could be a potential successor for McGregor in the future.

It will be interesting to see who the other rumoured clubs are thought to be, whilst Rangers would also have a clearer picture of who they could be up against if they did have to battle hard for his signature.

Having played a starring role for St. Johnstone and becoming one of the first names on the team sheet at McDiarmid Park this season, it could be difficult for the Light Blues to try and convince him to come to Ibrox with McGregor in peak form.

Rangers fans, would you like to see Clark at Ibrox? Do you think he would be a suitable replacement for McGregor in the future? Join in with the discussion by letting us know your thoughts below.
