Spiers hails ‘near-perfect’ Jonny

Journalist Tim Spiers has hailed Jonny’s ‘near-perfect’ performance for Wolves away to Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The Lowdown: Wolves lose at Burnley

Bruno Lage’s side made the trip to Turf Moor in what was an important game for both sides, with European football still on offer for Wanderers.

It was a cagey game against the relegation-threatened but Burnley took the lead through Matej Vydra midway through the second half and held on for a priceless win.

One player who started proceedings was Jonny, as he enjoyed a good afternoon at the office, despite the result.

The Latest: Spiers hails Jonny display

Taking to Twitter during the game, Spiers lauded the Spaniard’s impact against Burnley, barring one minor hiccup:

“Jonny’s near-perfect performance is blemished by a stray pass.”

The Verdict: Impressive return from injury

While the result at Turf Moor was undoubtedly disappointing, Lage can at least take heart from the manner in which Jonny has returned from a serious long-term injury.

The 28-year-old has scored twice in eight appearances since coming back into the side in February, offering attacking thrust but also defensive expertise.

It is heart-warming to see Jonny back to his best after what may have been considered a career-threatening knee problem and he should continue to be a key man moving forward.

Mitchell's second ton seals six-wicket win

Daryl Mitchell’s second century of the match and 94 from Moeen Ali led Worcestershire to a six-wicket win over Gloucestershire in their County Championship Division Two clash at Cheltenham

07-Aug-2010
ScorecardDaryl Mitchell’s second century of the match and 94 from Moeen Ali led Worcestershire to a six-wicket win over Gloucestershire in their County Championship Division Two clash at Cheltenham. Mitchell, who finished 134 not out, and Ali put on 181 for the fourth wicket as Worcestershire reached their target of 339 with 14.2 overs remaining and for the loss of just four wickets.Worcestershire captain Vikram Solanki also played an important part in his side’s fourth Championship win of the summer, contributing 64 to a second-wicket stand of 96 with Mitchell. It was a bitterly disappointing day for Gloucestershire, who had been hoping to increase the pressure on Sussex and Glamorgan at the top of the Division Two table.Gloucestershire began the day looking to register their first County Championship victory at the College Ground since they beat Sussex in 2001. They enjoyed an early success when, in the third over of the day, David Wheeldon was caught down the legside by wicketkeeper Jonathan Batty off Gemaal Hussain. But that proved to be Gloucestershire’s only success of the morning session as Mitchell, who had made 104 in the first innings, and Solanki batted with great patience to take the score on to 73 for 1 from 35.4 overs at the interval, which was taken two balls early due to rain. The first boundary of the innings did not arrive until the 15th over – a straight drive by Solanki off Hussain – and 50 was not reached until the 30th over. Solanki, on 22, survived a sharp chance to Chris Taylor at short leg off left-arm spinner Vikram Banerjee. Other than that, he played with increasing confidence and fluency on his way to a 92-ball half-century, which he reached with a boundary driven through extra cover off Hussain.Mitchell and Solanki had put on 96 for the second wicket when Jon Lewis dismissed Solanki, who could count himself unlucky to fall victim to a superb diving catch by Taylor at midwicket. Shakib Al Hasan got off the mark by sweeping Banerjee for six over midwicket and hit the next ball for four to the same area. But the Bangladesh allrounder rather recklessly tried another big hit off the next delivery and holed out to Will Porterfield on the midwicket boundary. That brought Ali to the middle and he and Mitchell saw Worcestershire through to 202 for 3 at tea with few alarms. The biggest escape came when Ali, on 28, was put down by Porterfield at extra cover off James Franklin.Worcestershire now had victory in mind and Mitchell confirmed their intentions by pulling three successive fours off Anthony Ireland, the last of which was all-run. Mitchell had required 152 balls to reach his half-century, but he needed just 66 more to reach his second ton of the game, which arrived when he straight-drove a single off Banerjee.Ali reached his fifty from 84 deliveries and looked set for a hundred until he drove a return catch to Franklin, shortly after the second new ball had been taken. His 124-ball innings contained 15 fours, the majority of which were driven through the off-side.There was no dislodging Mitchell, though, who ended with 16 fours in his 256-ball innings. Alexei Kervezee hit Banerjee for six over long-off and ended the match in the same over by driving him for another boundary to long-on.

Warwickshire have made an approach to Middlesex about the possibility of signing England batsman Eoin Morgan. The reported that Warwickshire are keen to sign Morgan, 23, at the end of the season when his contract with Middlesex runs out and a club spokesman confirmed the situation, but added his current county had put a new deal on the table.”I can confirm that we have been contacted by Warwickshire about the possibility of signing Eoin Morgan,” he said. “I have been in contact with [Middlesex director of cricket] Angus Fraser this morning and he is very keen that Eoin stays at the club. We have offered Eoin a new contract and we hope he will sign it.”Morgan has been pivotal in England’s recent limited-overs resurgence, blending power with invention as he helped them win the World Twenty20 tournament and beat Australia 3-2 in the recent 50-over series, where he was named Man of the Series. He has enjoyed a seven-year relationship at Middlesex, who brought him over from his native Dublin. Having made his Test debut in the recent series against Bangladesh, Morgan is hoping to cement his place before the Ashes, but faces stiff competition from Jonathan Trott.Ashley Giles, Warwickshire’s director of cricket and also an England selector, has watched Morgan’s rise closely and is eager to bring him to a Warwickshire side struggling in Division One. However, with Morgan’s rising international stock it is debatable how much county cricket he will play in the future

Leeds: Whites not in for Ronaldo Vieira

Leeds United are not looking to sign former midfielder Ronaldo Vieira this month, according to The Mirror’s David Anderson.

The Lowdown: Italian reports

The Whites are looking to bring in two midfielders before the end of the month, with numerous updates emerging from Italy regarding Vieira.

The 23-year-old has recently returned to Sampdoria’s matchday squad following a lengthy period out through injury, with reports towards the end of 2021 suggesting Vieira was ‘ready to return home’ with his bags packed.

A recent story went as far as to say Leeds are ready to sign Vieira over the coming weeks, however, it doesn’t seem as if that will materialise after all.

The Latest: Anderson’s post

Anderson took to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon to provide an update on the Englishman.

This is what he had to say, revealing the Whites are not making a move for Vieira.

“I know Leeds fans would rather hear who they are trying to sign, but it is my understanding that they are not attempting to re-sign old boy Ronaldo Vieira.”

The Verdict: Correct call?

Leeds currently have Kalvin Phillips and Jamie Shackleton out injured, leaving them with just two out-and-out midfielders available.

Vieira’s last competitive appearance came way back in February though, so it wouldn’t make sense to bring an injury-hit midfielder to rescue Leeds’ injury-hit squad.

There’s no denying that the Whites need additions in the middle of the pitch before the month is out, however, they need to be the correct ones in both the short and long term, so it seems to be the right move to not pursue Vieira going off his recent injury woes.

SAFC: Black Cats missed out on January deal

A big Sunderland blow has emerged from their efforts to make additions to their squad on deadline day…

What’s the talk?

North East journalist Matty Hewitt has relayed a claim from Peterborough’s chairman explaining why the Black Cats missed out on a deal to sign a centre-back.

He Tweeted: “#SAFC had an approach for Mark Beevers turned down on deadline day. Darragh MacAnthony says Lee Johnson was keen on the defender but Sunderland were put off by his wages earlier in the window. A late U-turn by Posh saw him stay in the Championship.”

Fuming

Kristjaan Speakman endured a howler over this deal as his decision seemingly meant that they missed out on the centre-back, which was certainly a big blow for Johnson.

His concern over the player’s wages appeared to delay the deal, giving Peterborough the time to eventually opt for a U-turn on deadline day. They may not have had the chance to change their minds had Speakman been willing to sanction the move Johnson wanted at an earlier date, rather than leaving it until the last day of the window and ending up with no additional reinforcements at centre-back.

One player in that position who did arrive at the Stadium of Light in January, earlier in the window, was Danny Batth and his form has been far from convincing. The ex-Wolves enforcer has struggled badly in recent weeks, with a dreadful average WhoScored rating of 6.36 so far for the club.

Last season, Beevers averaged an excellent WhoScored rating of 7.07 across 45 League One appearances. This shows that he is capable of delivering consistently brilliant displays at this level, whereas Batth has been found out since arriving on Wearside.

The 32-year-old also helped the East Anglian side to secure promotion out of the third tier. This means that he has key experience in achieving the goal that Sunderland have set out for themselves this season and could have provided a big boost to the side, which is why it was a setback to miss out on him.

Johnson was not given the centre-back he wanted to add to his squad, whilst losing Tom Flanagan, and he was eventually sacked after Batth scored an own goal in a 6-0 defeat to Bolton. It is all hypothetical now, but the ex-Bristol City boss may have bought himself more time had Beevers come in and improved the side, which his statistics suggest that he would have done. This is certainly a decision that will rile the fanbase at the Stadium of Light.

Bye-bye Ndombele: Spurs eye midfield beast

Tottenham Hotspur could finally axe Tanguy Ndombele with a move for Frank Kessie this month, and he’s available for a bargain price…

What’s the word?

According to Italian journalist Sandro Sabatini, AC Milan are willing to part ways with the out-of-contract midfielder for just £10m before deadline day.

Spurs are able to secure the Ivory Coast international on a pre-contract agreement for nothing but that would not see him make the switch to north London until the summer.

“Milan, from what I understand, if they receive a reasonable offer for Kessie’s remaining four months, they will sell it. Ten million? Yes, and Tottenham can buy it for 10 million,” he told Radio Radio (via Calciomercato.it).

Bye-bye Ndombele

After an inconsistent two-and-a-half years at the club, in which four different managers have been appointed in some capacity, it appears that patience is finally wearing thin over Tottenham’s club-record signing.

‘It is hard to see a future for Tanguy Ndombele under [Antonio] Conte,’ wrote the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick recently, whilst Football Insider pundit Noel Whelan suggested:

“I’m pretty sure the player knows the destiny of his career at Tottenham. If it is something that if can be sorted out in January with a loan or a sale, I’m sure it’s happening. If not they’ll still be looking to make that move happen for Ndombele in the summer.”

Kessie, who the Italian head coach will know from his time at their San Siro rivals Inter, would be a much better fit for his system at Spurs.

The 6-foot midfielder, once lauded as an “extraordinary player” with “sublime intelligence” by former Rossoneri boss Vincenzo Montella, continues to be a standout performer in Milan.

Just like last season, he ranks second for total goals scored behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic and is third overall for average rating, having also managed 1.3 tackles, 1.1 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game, via WhoScored, too.

The £26m-rated beast’s playing style has earned comparisons to Yaya Toure, who was a beast in his prime in the Premier League for Manchester City, and perhaps he is the player that Spurs had hoped Ndombele would be.

“I want Kessie in my team, he scores, he assists, he has personality, he has quality, he doesn’t lose the ball, he’s intelligent,” claimed Antonio Cassano (via MilanLive). “I’m watching him carefully, with Roma it was devastating. It reminds me of the Yaya Toure of the best times. He is a different player, but in terms of impact. He is holding Milan’s midfield alone.”

On the above evidence, it would make sense to finally shift Ndombele, who was once dubbed “unplayable” by Joe Hart, on and then replace him for just £10m with Kessie. That seems like a massive steal right now.

Edgbaston gets development green light

Warwickshire have announced that a proposed £30m ground redevelopment due to be completed in summer 2011 will now be able progress as planned after objections were raised by local residents. It will be relief for Warwickshire after the ECB threatened to remove the ground’s Test status after the redevelopment plans, proposed first in May 2009 were stalled by the Birmingham city council’s planning committee. At the time Gordon Hollins, the ECB’s head of venue partnership, said: “Edgbaston falls some way short of ECB’s facilities criteria in a number of areas which is clearly not a sustainable position if Edgbaston is to retain the right to host major matches.”However, with the plans now agreed there will be the construction of a major new stand on the south side of the ground, increasing capacity to 25,000 and a 500-plus cover banqueting suite and exclusive members’ areas will be erected. Alongside this the players’ and media area will be revamped.Demolition of the old facilities commenced in mid-January and Warwickshire have been waiting for news, following an objection from a small residents group which took its case to the Court of Appeal, at the end of December. The application to appeal was rejected.Colin Povey, the Warwickshire chief executive said: “The redevelopment of the ground is critical to ensure Edgbaston keeps its competitive edge and remains a worthy contender in the race to secure international matches.”This result is not only fantastic news for us, our players, members and cricket fans, but also for the economy of the West Midlands. There is great excitement at the club about the proposed changes and I hope we can now look forward to starting the building work without further delay.”The next 18 months will be an important chapter in the history of Edgbaston and Warwickshire county cricket club. Our plans have received strong support from the city council, Advantage West Midlands and the majority of local residents.”

Devlin drops claim on Bernard Higgins

Bernard Higgins’ rumoured appointment to a senior security position at Celtic may be off.

What’s the latest?

In a recent Q&A on The Athletic, Celtic correspondent Kieran Devlin revealed that he has heard rumours suggesting that the club’s potential appointment of the assistant chief constable could now be in doubt.

Many Celtic fans have voices strong opposition to the club bringing Higgins into a role at Parkhead – addressing letters to Michael Nicholson concerning the appointment, as well as protesting against the move during Thursday’s 3-2 win over Real Betis – as the police officer played a major role in the implementation of the highly unpopular Offensive Behaviour at Football Act.

In response to a fan asking whether the rumours that the club’s move for Higgins had been called off were true, Devlin said: “Have heard similar rumours but don’t have any concrete info on it I’m afraid.”

Fans will love Devlin’s claim

While Devlin himself said that he has no concrete information as to whether or not Higgins’ potential appointment at Parkhead has indeed been called off, the news that the journalist has heard rumours around the club suggesting that this could be the case will undoubtedly be music to the ears of many Celtic fans.

Indeed, in a recent statement, the Celtic Ultras fan group said: “Over recent weeks, the Celtic support has united to send a clear message to the Celtic board that Bernard Higgins is not welcome at the club.

“Since the appointment was first discussed in October, continual requests have been made to the club to discuss this issue further. The club has not responded.

“It is within this context, and with regret, that we announce a return to the silent protest which began the campaign. On Thursday against Real Betis, and if necessary, on Sunday against Motherwell, we will remain silent for 90 minutes and ask those who support the campaign to join us.

“We will gladly call off Sunday’s silent protest should Michael Nicholson agree to meet with the supporter organisations to discuss the issue. We hope that he will finally take us up on this request and the protest can be avoided.

“At a time where there is a growing bond between the team, the manager and the supporters, we are frustrated that the board continue to sow division. We desperately want to provide the vocal and visual backing that Celtic Park is famous for but feel unable to do so while the Higgins saga continues.”

As such, it is clear for all to see that, should the rumours of Higgins’ potential appointment at Celtic being called off prove to be true, it is undoubtedly something which would delight the vast majority of fans, as the above statement makes it abundantly clear that they want no association with the assistant chief constable whatsoever.
