Jerome Taylor century transforms game

It has taken some time for Jerome Taylor to prove his all-round credentials but it was indisputably provided with an innings as exhilarating and critical as any by a West Indian of late

From the time John Dyson took over as West Indies head coach, the Australian has repeatedly drilled it into Jerome Taylor’s head – and anyone else’s who cared to listen – that he possesses the batting ability to become a genuine allrounder. It has taken some time but the proof was indisputably provided at the University Oval here on Sunday with an innings by Taylor as exhilarating and critical as any by a West Indian of late, whatever his reputation or position in the order. For two hours, ten minutes on another overcast, if less wintry, day, Taylor reeled off classic stroke after classic stroke on his way to 106 from 107 balls. The highlights were 17 fours and three sixes, two off Daniel Vettori, Test cricket’s premier left-arm spinner with 275 wickets to his name. His runs were gathered in all directions, mainly with fierce drives and wristy leg-side flicks, with a few neat cuts in between. Several were hoisted over fielders, those along the ground were threaded through defensive field settings. There was not the hint of a chance until he touched a catch to wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum off Vettori.By itself, it was truly special. The circumstances made it even more so. When Taylor arrived in the middle at half-past three, nearly half-way through the extended day, West Indies were in the course of one of their familiar wobbles. They were 173 for 6, still 192 adrift of New Zealand’s 365, Shivnarine Chanderpaul was stalled, only the four fast bowlers were to follow and there was ample time left for embarrassment, if not defeat. When Taylor departed, the arrears had been trimmed to 39 and the psychological balance shifted. As so often in the past year, the unflappable Chanderpaul kept him company while he dominated a stand of 153. By the time Chanderpaul was last out attempting to take the strike, captain Vettori’s sixth wicket, the deficit was down to 26.Daren Powell saw to it that there was a happy ending to the day, bowling Jamie How and nightwatchman Kyle Mills with successive balls in the eighth of the ten overs New Zealand batted at the end.Taylor’s aggression changed the course of the innings, if not the match. It broke the shackles imposed on Chanderpaul who had become so becalmed that his inactivity aided New Zealand to build pressure. His care was influenced by the loss of four wickets in the first session. But he was throttled to such an extent by a combination of Vettori’s variations from one end and the persistent fast men from the other, that he made 5 in a restorative stand of 28 with the debutant left-hand batsman Brendan Nash that occupied 19 overs.A change in bowling and Taylor’s immediate impact shifted the psychological balance. When Mills was rested after a spell of six overs for five runs and the wicket of Nash, Chanderpaul took three boundaries in the left-arm medium-pacer James Franklin’s first over.At the opposite end, Taylor hoisted Vettori straight for two fours and a six. The shackles were broken and nothing could then contain Taylor. By tea, he was 53 and had swept past not only his previous highest Test score of 31 but also Chanderpaul who had a 30 overs headstart. The new ball was introduced right after the break but, hard and shiny, it came faster off the bat. Mark Gillespie attempted to bounce Taylor out, placing a short leg for the catch, only to be hooked and pulled. Three sweet boundaries followed in his next over and Taylor reached his rare landmark from 97 balls with an exquisite cover drive off Franklin for his 16th four. His team-mates had all assembled on the boundary’s edge for the moment to hail the achievement and join in his jubilation in the middle.Soon, it was over, ending a partnership of 152 that bettered the West Indies record for the wicket against New Zealand, set 52 years ago at Christchurch by Denis Atkinson and John Goddard. As Taylor walked off, spectators on the grass bank and in the grandstand were on their feet in applause. They had been treated to a quality performance.

They were similarly entertained by Chris Gayle’s breathtaking power in moving from 29 at the start to 74. But he was one of four wickets in the first session. Like Sewnarine Chattergoon and Ramnaresh Sarwan before him, he succumbed to a limp shot when his first hundred since 2005 seemed inevitable. He and Chattergoon were undone by miscued hooks. Sarwan drove airily to be caught behind after earning a reprieve on a review of an lbw decision one ball earlier. Xavier Marshall flattered with his positive, eye-catching style but his dismissal to a bat-pad catch, awarded on the television review, was not unexpected after his scoring was stifled by tight bowling.Nash replaced him and was dropped off his sixth ball by Ross Taylor, low and right-handed, at first slip off Mills. It was a welcome gift on his 31st birthday that allowed him to steady things but he and Chanderpaul became so becalmed that something had to give.Since it wasn’t going to be Chanderpaul, it was Nash. After batting with composure for an hour after his let-off, he steered Mills to gully, a shot of impatience. Denesh Ramdin quickly followed, the lbw decision to Vettori confirmed by a prolonged television review, leaving the vulnerable tail exposed.Just how vulnerable was quickly obvious as Vettori removed Powell first ball and Fidel Edwards without scoring. He claimed his sixth wicket when Chanderpaul, out of partners, tried to paddle to leg to get the strike and was bowled. Never mind, there were 76 more runs to his tally.

Predicted Bolton XI to face Wigan

Ian Evatt has had a strong start to the campaign with Bolton as they currently sit unbeaten after five competitive matches.

The Trotters have won three and drawn two of their first five games, winning two in League One and progressing through in the Carabao Cup by beating Championship side Barnsley on penalties.

They now travel to fellow League One outfit Wigan in the second round of the Carabao Cup as they attempt to extend their unbeaten run and make their way into the next stage of the competition, which is where the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool enter the draw.

Will Evatt shake things up? Here is our predicted XI for the match tonight:

We are predicting that he will make four changes to the side from Saturday’s win over Oxford, with Matt Gilks, Harry Brockbank, Liam Gordon and Elias Kachunga all coming in.

Between the sticks, we are predicting that experienced veteran Gilks will be handed the gloves to give 27-year-old Joel Dixon a rest. The latter has started the last four matches in all competitions, so it could be time to give the 39-year-old a match in goal to prove that he still has it in him to perform at this level.

In defence, we are predicting the two full-backs to switch out. Young prospects Brockbank and Gordon should be given the opportunity to impress, allowing Evatt to omit Gethin Jones and £8.4k-per-week gem Declan John in order to give them a rest.

We believe that the spine of the team will remain the same, though. Ricardo Santos, George Johnston, Jordan Williams, Josh Sheehan and Antoni Sarcevic all registered SofaScore ratings of 6.6 or higher in the 2-1 win over Oxford last weekend, and keeping the core of the team could help to build momentum and confidence moving forward.

This is also why we think that Eoin Doyle and Oladipo Afolayan will keep their places in the team. They both scored in the win against Oxford and will be on a high after their respective performances, so it would be counterproductive to then place them on the bench for this game.

The final change we are predicting is Elias Kachunga coming in for Lloyd Isgrove. The former Southampton winger was given a disappointing SofaScore rating of 6.3 against Oxford, as he lost 10 of his 14 duels on the pitch and relinquished possession 14 times.

This is why we are predicting the Welshman to be dropped, and we have published an article explaining why Kachunga should come in, stating that he could provide quality end product given the impact he has made as a substitute in recent games.

AND in other news, Evatt must unleash “fantastic” £720k-rated Bolton gem vs Wigan, he’s a game-changer…

Blackmore provides Armstrong injury update

Ralph Hasenhuttl appears to have been dealt an early-season injury blow at Southampton after it was confirmed that Stuart Armstrong had picked up a calf problem.

The Scotland international was absent for the Saints as they picked up an impressive 1-1 draw with Manchester United on Sunday afternoon, whilst he was also left on the bench in the opening day defeat against Everton.

BBC journalist Adam Blackmore provided an update on Armstrong’s whereabouts on Twitter ahead of the game at St Mary’s yesterday, confirming that the 29-year-old has picked up a minor calf injury.

Hopefully the winger won’t be sidelined for too long, as he was one of the most consistent performers in Hasenhuttl’s side last season.

The former Celtic ace made 32 appearances in the 2020/21 Premier League, in which he contributed four goals and five assists, averaging a solid 6.82 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

This was enough to rank him as the top-scoring winger at Southampton, whilst he was also rated as the sixth-best overall performer for the south coast outfit, which emphasises just how important he is to the Saints.

Hasenhuttl is a huge fan of the 28-year-old, whose praises he sang in 2020, saying: “That is one of the reasons why we have been better because he is very hard-working and is now scoring by coming more often in the position to score.

“This was a fantastic turnaround and he’s also something of a role model for our transformation.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“594431”]

Therefore, Hasenhuttl and Saints fans alike will be gutted to hear that the versatile midfielder has picked up an injury and will be hoping that the 29-year-old is fit to make his return either against Newport County in the Carabao Cup in midweek or Newcastle United in the Premier League next weekend.

Cameron White named as McGain's replacement

Victoria allrounder Cameron White has been named as the replacement for the injured Bryce McGain in the Australian Test squad in India. He will join the squad on October 6 in Bangalore.”We feel that Cameron’s right-arm legspin and experience in Indian conditions, where he has just returned after captaining the Australia A one-day team to a tournament victory, is the correct option and will provide a good balance to our slow bowling attack,” Andrew Hilditch, the chairman of selectors, said. “Cameron’s bowling has continued to improve over the past year at inter-state level and his powerful batting adds extra depth and versatility to the squad.”Cameron has performed well in Australian colours since his return to the one-day international squad earlier this year and he has now been rewarded with inclusion in the Test squad.”Incidentally, White was part of the Australian squad for the tour of India in 2004. He also played for the Bangalore Royal Challengers during the IPL in April this year.White hasn’t played a Test for Australia yet although he has played 21 one-day internationals, the last of which was against Bangladesh in Darwin in September. His opportunities were limited in that series: he scored 31 runs in two innings and bowled only 8.4 overs in three matches. Later in the month he captained Australia A to a tri-series win against India A and New Zealand A. He scored 144 runs at an average of 48 and took eight wickets in five games.White’s inclusion meant that chinaman bowler Beau Casson, who made his debut against West Indies in Barbados in June, was overlooked once again. Casson was part of Australia A’s Test tour of India in September but injured his hamstring after bowling only one over in Bangalore. McGain and offspinner Jason Krejza were chosen ahead of Casson in the original Test squad to India.

Gers fans rage at Peter Martin article

Glasgow Rangers fans are far from happy with comments from journalist Peter Martin, who said the Gers were able to win the Premiership title last term because of their rivals’ complacency.

The Gers were, by far, the best team in Scotland last term. The won the league title with 102 points, 25 ahead of their nearest rivals Celtic, and they went through the whole competition without losing a single game (thefishy.co.uk).

Not only that, they set a new British record of just 13 goals conceded in a top flight campaign (thehindu.com) – it was as comprehensive a victory as possible.

However, it appears not everybody sees it that way. Writing for PLZ, Martin believes Celtic’s complacency allowed the the Gers to capture their 55th top-tier title – a rather insulting claim given how good Rangers actually were.

An extract from the article was shared on Twitter by @KerryFail, and it attracted plenty of attention from the Gers supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the the fans had to say about the Martin article below

India work on fielding lapses

Robin Singh, India’s fielding coach, has worked with the players on their close-in catching in the nets after dropped catches affected India’s performance in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo

Robin Singh, India’s fielding coach, says India’s close-in catching will improve in the next Test with the team working on it in the nets. Dropped catches affected India’s performance in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo.”There have been a few lapses in the past that won’t be repeated,” Robin said after a practice session ahead of the second Test in Galle, starting on Thursday. “Most of the people are aware of their responsibilities. I feel we had a bad day [in the last Test] but we will come back strongly in the [next] Test matches.”India lost the first Test by an innings and 239 runs and conceded 600 runs in the first innings where four Sri Lankans scored centuries. Mahela Jayawardene, the top scorer with 136, was dropped by wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik on 55 and 96 while Thilan Samaraweera, the next highest scorer with 127, was dropped by Gautam Gambhir at short leg when he was on 53.Robin said both players had put in time for fielding practice. “Gambhir is working hard on close catches. Dinesh Karthik had a bad match. He dropped a few catches but it’s a part of the game. He is working hard in the nets. We hope to come back strongly.”Robin said the team was in a better mental shape than it was after losing in Colombo. “Everyone is trying to lift their game. Everyone is prepared in their own way. If each player plays well, if we are able to get a good start, the rest can follow.”

Middlesex make it two wins in a row

Middlesex wrapped up their second Championship win in a row by an innings and 38 runs against Essex at Lord’s

It’s a telling statement that Middlesex’s last victory over Essex at Lord’s came during the latter end of the Thatcher era, but there’s enough evidence to suggest it won’t be as long a wait next time around.Their second Championship win on the trot, by an innings-and-38-runs, lifting Middlesex to third in the second division, was finished convincingly between lunch and tea on the fourth day. Essex went out to bat needing something massive to salvage a draw but lost wickets at irregular intervals to end on 384 with Tim Murtagh claiming 4 for 83, to complete ten in the match, and Dirk Nannes’ complimenting him with 4 for 75.Mark Pettini, the visiting captain, and Ryan ten Doeschate batted sensibly enough during their fifth-wicket stand the previous evening, but a final-day revival was always going to need something spectacular. ten Doeschate came out more adventurously, especially willing to pull Nannes’ well-directed short-pitched offers. His fifty wasn’t long in coming, but he went into his shell after Pettini’s dismissal for 75.At 239 for 4, Pettini paid the price for his first lazy shot of the morning, chipping Murtagh to midwicket where Shaun Udal held a neat low catch. Udal then came on in the 73rd over, from the Nursery End, after an hour’s play and kept it tidy as Essex slowed down. With ten Doeschate quite composed Ed Smith changed his bowlers around more than yesterday, rotating his four seamers in brief bursts. Steven Finn looked the most threatening but ten Doeschate was clinical in his handling of Finn’s lift off the deck. Udal’s frustration was evident with several extremely hopeful lbw appeals to deliveries clearly pitching outside leg stump, which ten Doeschate mostly swept away.Smith’s decision to take the new ball proved his smartest choice of the day, and it altered the complexion of the morning. Murtagh needed just two deliveries to trap James Foster lbw for 23, though it appeared to have been a little high. There was nothing questionable about Murtagh’s next strike, as ten Doeschate’s attempt to leave one came back off the inside edge onto the top of off stump.Nannes gave Alex Tudor a solid working over with a string of bouncers before lunch, but James Middlebrook’s dismissal for four, Murtagh’s fourth wicket, sparked a period of aggression from Essex’s lower order. Tudor and David Masters added 59 with a flurry of flowing boundaries – most of Masters’ shots came out of the middle, barring one slash just over third slip’s fingertips – before Nannes cleaned him up for a brisk 27.Danish Kaneria’s attempts to take matters into the final session ended when he was neatly held by a sliding catch at midwicket, giving Udal his first wicket of the match. It hadn’t been all smooth sailing on the final day, but it was a clinical win and could make the special general meeting called by members a slightly less heated affair.Middlesex next take on Northamptonshire at Uxbridge from June 29, while Essex play Derbyshire at Chelmsford the same day.

Rangers miss out on Rafael Santos Borre

Rangers have officially missed out on signing Rafael Santos Borre after Eintracht Frankfurt announced his signing, which is a blow for Steven Gerrard as he could’ve been a stellar addition to his squad at Ibrox.

The Bundesliga side announced his signing on a four-year deal from River Plate on a free transfer on Monday, which brings an end to Rangers’ reported hopes of bringing him in.

Would he have improved Gerrard’s squad?

Whilst Gerrard can boast a plethora of attacking talent in his squad for next season, the £15.3m-rated Santos Borre could have added some real Champions League quality ahead of Rangers’ return to Europe’s elite competition next season.

During his time at River Plate, the Colombia international would contribute an impressive 56 goals and 18 assists in 149 appearances, including eight goals in just 13 Copa de Liga appearances last season.

A player of Santos Borre’s quality would surely have found the net regularly with Rangers when you consider that they managed 92 goals in just 38 league appearances last season, so it is a shame for Gerrard that he is moving to Germany this summer.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone praised Borre’s development since his move to Argentina after struggling during his time in Spain, saying:

“The truth is that we have not talked about the issue of Borre. He is breaking it there in River, I am happy for him.

“He came very young (to Atletico) and the truth is that his growth has been tremendous – phenomenal.”

Could he have replaced Morelos?

Alfredo Morelos has been regularly linked with a move away from Ibrox in recent seasons, with Porto seemingly the main contenders to sign El Bufalo this summer.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

The 24-year-old has been superb for Rangers since joining the club from HJK Helsinki in 2017, contributing 94 goals and 43 assists in 194 appearances for the Teddy Bears in his four seasons at Ibrox.

He is also Rangers’ record goalscorer in Europe, which suggests that if he were to leave ahead of the 21/22 campaign, a proven goalscorer would have to be signed as his replacement if Gerrard’s side want to succeed in European competition.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

It is hard to ignore the similarities between Santos Borre and Morelos given that they are the same age and nationality, but if the Rangers star does depart this summer, Rangers will have to look elsewhere for a replacement for El Bufalo.

And, in other news… Rangers handed huge boost with Ibrox “warrior”, Gerrard surely delighted
