Leeds United: Marcelo Bielsa asked about Helder Costa following Newcastle win

Leeds United picked up a great result against Newcastle United on Wednesday night as they won 5-2. However it was a surprise to see Helder Costa not feature in the match day squad.

What Bielsa had to say about Costa

When asked if there was an injury to Costa and whether that was why he was not involved against Newcastle, Bielsa simply said: “No injury.”

Helder Costa has to prove himself

This simple message highlights that at the moment Bielsa believes there are 18 better players than the winger who deserve a spot in the squad more than him.

He definitely has the quality to succeed, with his former manager Nuno Espirito Santos saying: “The first season we were in the Premier League, Helder was immense and had a huge impact on the team.

He’s a very talented player, but things happen naturally, players move from here to another place. It happens in football. Honestly, I’m delighted he’s showing his quality and enjoying his football.”

However this season has not shown his quality. The 26 year-old has scored twice, in ten appearances, and has only managed on average 0.9 shots and 0.7 key passes a game (WhoScored).

The player now knows that he has to perform better and more consistently when given the chance if he wants to be playing more for the club.

Newcastle must show no mercy to Henri Saivet after Premier League omission

Having omitted him from their Premier League squad list for this season, Newcastle must show no mercy when it comes to Henri Saivet’s future at the club.

What’s the word?

Since arriving from Ligue 1 side Bordeaux a few years ago, Saivet has been an unmitigated disaster at St James’ Park, barely getting a look-in and spending most of his contracted time out on loan.

Now, it appears the end is near for him on Tyneside, having been one of the players omitted from their final squad list sent to the Premier League.

With his contract expiring in the summer of 2021, the Magpies must surely cut their losses on the midfielder in January.

Bruce must make ruthless decision

With a total of eight appearances to his name in a Newcastle shirt, it’s not a stretch to say that Saivet has arguably been one of the worst – if not the worst – signings of the Mike Ashley era.

Earning a reported £35k-a-week at St James’ Park, the Magpies’ failure to offload him in the summer transfer window just gone by means that they will having to pay his wages until January – a complete waste and drain on resources.

New signings are all well and good, but Steve Bruce must surely make it his priority to get rid of Saivet once and for all. It would be the only way for them to make the best of a bad situation.

And in other news, Lee Ryder has delivered a major boost to Steve Bruce and Newcastle.

Wolves could secure £18m bargain in Ligue 1 sensation Mounir Chouiar

Wolves chairman Jeff Shi could continue the youthful revolution at the club with yet another impressive move in this summer’s transfer window…

What’s the word?

According to L’Equipe, the Midlands outfit are one of three Premier League teams looking at Dijon wonderkid Mounir Chouiar, though he is also courted by teams from all five of Europe’s elite divisions.

Leeds United and Arsenal are the only other teams mentioned.

They claim that the 21-year-old would be available for just €20m (£18m), which would be the Ligue 1 outfit’s record sale by some margin. Lens would also be due 20% of any fee.

Bargain given his potential

Nuno Santo’s squad is brimming with young talent which has been a key aim of the Fosun ownership group – the likes of Pedro Neto and Ruben Vinagre have broken into the first-team setup whilst £35m club-record signing Fabio Silva will be expected to follow suit.

Chouiar, who can play on the left as well as through the middle, would be yet another ambitious signing with a ton of potential and one that looks quite the bargain at £18m.

Get French Football News have dubbed him a “dribble-king” which is hardly a surprise considering he pulled off more successful attempts (63%) than the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Houssem Aouar last season.

Whilst his manager Stephane Jobard believes the France U19 international is a “serious talent” who “can destabilise the defence in one-on-ones” and is “capable of making the final pass and can even score.”

The Dijon boss also added: “He has the whole arsenal of a modern footballer.”

Chouiar also created 2.6 chances per 90 minutes in Ligue 1 last term, which is better than the 2.6 key passes that Joao Moutinho averaged per 90 minutes in the Premier League, via WhoScored.

Shi swooping for the French attacker would just be yet another shrewd move from the Molineux outfit.

Wolves are in the race to sign former Everton loanee Djibril Sidibe

Wolverhampton Wanderers lost one of their key players this summer after Matt Doherty swapped Molineux for north London and despite the acquisition of Ki-Jana Hoever, it appears Nuno Santo still wants another right wing-back.

According to 90min, the Midlands outfit are one of three Premier League teams chasing a move for former Everton loanee Djibril Sidibe, who is seemingly free to leave Monaco for the right bid this transfer window.

They claim that West Ham are leading the race, but Wolves are also keen on signing him, though he will only be sold if any loan exit comes with an obligation to buy.

The Toffees hierarchy opted against triggering the €14m (£12.8m) clause they had as part of his loan last season after appearing 28 times in all competitions.

Sidibe provided four assists whilst averaging 3.3 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 1.3 clearances per game, via WhoScored.

Not a single Old Gold player managed more tackles per game in the Premier League last season – not even Jonny (2.6), Willy Boly (2.6), Joao Moutinho (2.4) or Leander Dendoncker (1.8).

Whether the 18-time French international would be a decent addition for Nuno very much remains to be seen as he drew conflicting reviews last term.

Toffees caretaker Duncan Ferguson labelled him “unbelievable” after he played through illness against Chelsea, but later in the season, Sky Sports’ Gary Neville unleashed at his defending versus Arsenal, calling it a “madness” for poorly marking Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Wolves have also been linked with a move for Barcelona’s Nelson Semedo, which could make a ton of sense given his agent is Jorge Mendes, who carries deep ties within the Molineux reigns.

That deal is thought to be close as per Fabrizio Romano, so perhaps this interest in Sidibe is all merely a smokescreen.

Only time will tell, either way.

AND in other news, Wolves are now learning the negatives of aligning with Jorge Mendes…

Leeds could stun Europe with incredible Edinson Cavani move

Safe to say it’s been an incredible week for Leeds United and everyone associated with the club.

The Whites were crowned champions of the Championship, and can now look forward to Premier League football for the first time in well over a decade.

And already it seems, Andrea Radrizzani has set his sights quite high. The Italian recently admitted that he is a big fan of Edinson Cavani – the Uruguay international who recently left PSG after his contract had expired.

Can you name every one of the Leeds’ top goalscorers from the past 15 seasons? It’s a tricky one…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Radrizzani said: “In addition to his quality, Cavani could contribute with his physicality and adapt here, but I’ve never talked about him with the coach. Having said that, we’ve certainly thought about him and we’ll see, given he’s still available on a free transfer.”

Make no mistake about it, Cavani’s arrival at Elland Road would go down as one of the biggest transfer coups in the club’s history, if not the biggest.

The Uruguayan front-man has been at the top of his game in European football for a number of years now, banging in the goals left, right and centre for the likes of Napoli and PSG.

He is a marksman of the highest order, and his goal-record speaks for itself. He found the back of the net 104 times in 138 games for Napoli, before scoring an incredible 200 times in just 301 games for PSG. That’s not to mention his haul of 50 goals in 116 appearances for his national team either.

It’s no surprise then that he has been widely lauded by his former teammates, with Marco Verratti hailing him as “exceptional”, and Marquinhos going one further by declaring him as a “genius as a goal-scorer”.

The kind of reputation that the 33-year-old would bring with him to Elland Road would be unparalleled, particularly for a side that has just been promoted from the Championship.

It would be the kind of stamp of approval of Leeds’ return to the big-time that would send shock-waves around Europe. If Orta, the club’s director of football, can negotiate a suitable contract with Cavani, then this will go down as history as one of the Whites’ most defining moments.

Tottenham Hotspur: Another European club joins hunt for Pochettino favourite

Tottenham star Jan Vertonghen will not be short of suitors ahead of the transfer window, as another team have thrown their name into the mix.

According to Fotomac, Galatasaray are targeting Vertonghen in the summer as they are looking for replacements for Christian Luyindama and Marcao.

The Tottenham defender will become a free agent in a matter of weeks, amid interest from Serie A sides Inter Milan and Fiorentina.

The Turkish newspaper, as relayed by Sport Witness, claims the Lions are scouting for alternatives.

Galatasaray are ready to offer Vertonghen’s representatives a two-year-contract, reportedly worth €2m per year, which roughly equates to £1.78m.

Although the Belgian was a favourite of former boss Mauricio Pochettino, featuring in over 200 games for the Argentine, his deal is set to expire at the end of June.

The Premier League announced last month that clubs are able to offer extensions to out-of-contract players as a result of the economic uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus crisis.

However, Mourinho decided to call off talks with Vertonghen’s agent, and it seems the Belgium international is ready to explore his options as a free agent.

After arriving at White Hart Lane from Ajax in 2012, the 33-year-old has formed a solid partnership with Toby Alderweireld, playing in more than 300 games for the Lilywhites, scoring fourteen goals and creating seven assists in all competitions.

The Evening Standard recently revealed he plans to remain loyal to Spurs and will at least finish this season as he will be unable to play for another club until next term.

As it stands, the Turkish side’s offer falls short of Vertonghen’s wage demands. The Times reported that Fiorentina have hit a stumbling block over his £3.5m-a-year wages.

Nevertheless, the veteran is in hot demand as the transfer window approaches.

Profit Players: Selling Benik Afobe twice was brilliant business by Wolverhampton Wanderers

This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

It is perhaps safe to say that selling a player not just once, but twice, to two different clubs no less, is a very rare feat in the modern footballing world.

However, this is exactly what happened with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Benik Afobe, as he was sold first to AFC Bournemouth for £11.97 million on the 10th January 2016, and then to Stoke City for £12.15 million just under three years later.

In total, the club from the West Midlands accumulated £24.12 million, and given that they signed Afobe from the Arsenal U21 team for just £2.34 million back on the January 14th 2015, and re-signed him from Bournemouth for £10.26 million, Wolves made a big profit by selling him over both transfer deals, therefore representing rather brilliant pieces of business.

Afobe scored 13 goals and made five assists in 21 appearances in all competitions in the EFL Championship in his debut season at Molineux, according to Transfermarkt.

As a consequence, his market value rose up to £6.3 million by the start of the following campaign, in which he netted a further 10 strikes and provided one assist in 27 games in all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

The 27-year old was subsequently sold to the Cherries in the 2016 January transfer window, before returning for a second spell.

In the 2017/18 campaign, Afobe scored six times and produced one assist in 16 matches in the Championship (via Transfermarkt).

His market value increased to a peak £9 million in 2018, but it must be noted that both transfer fees that he was sold for surpassed this number.

Indeed, the striker went on to play for Stoke as well, where he has since remained despite a loan spell at Bristol City.

WWFC accumulating a total of £24.12 million for Afobe, who only played in spells, has proved to be brilliant business give the relatively big profit made from his sales.

Martin Semmens outlines Matt Crocker’s main Southampton objective

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Southampton announced the appointment of Matt Crocker as their new director of football operations on Tuesday, and chief executive officer Martin Semmens has made an exciting comparison when explaining what his main objective at the club will be.

What did he say?

Crocker will take up his new role in early 2020 having returned to St Mary’s following seven years with the FA, and Semmens has explained what he will be tasked with doing for the Premier League strugglers.

He told southamptonfc.com: “The Southampton Way is at the very core of everything we do here at the club, with a strong focus on our player pathway into the First Team. For our club to be successful going into the next decade, within an increasingly competitive Premier League, we must seek to strengthen our pathway and further develop every detail of our football operation.

“As Head of Development Teams at The FA, Matt was responsible for elite player and coach pathways through all teams, and was one of the key architects of the England DNA project. This created a framework and culture that has led to the success we see today through all age groups with the national team.”

Crocker’s mission

It is clear to see from Semmens’ words that Southampton as a club aren’t happy about the lack of academy graduates making it into the first team now compared to in the past.

In previous years they have seen the likes of Gareth Bale, Luke Shaw, Calum Chambers and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain rise through to the first team – all during Crocker’s previous spell with Saints – but it hasn’t happened as much recently in terms of developing top-quality players.

It appears as though Crocker will oversee coaching methods and other such things from a low age group right through until the first team to ensure this changes, and Semmens’ comparison with what he achieved for England is certainly an exciting one.

The Three Lions have gone from being something of a dull team to watch to one of the most entertaining in the world – 37 goals in eight Euro 2020 qualifying games is testament to that – with the likes of Jadon Sancho, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling regularly starring for their country.

[ad_pod ]

If Crocker can translate that “England DNA project” to Southampton and replicate the great success Gareth Southgate has had as manager by helping to get people enjoying international football again and taking them to a World Cup semi-final, then better times could lie ahead for the south coast outfit.

They are much-needed, too.

Phil McNulty claims Marcel Brands should be in charge of appointing Everton’s next manager

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

The Merseyside derby is set to take place on Wednesday evening in a game that could be Marco Silva’s last in the Everton dugout.

With his departure seemingly looming on the horizon, speculation regarding his replacement is beginning to run rife in the media.

What’s the word?

The pressure on Silva’s shoulders is seemingly at breaking point and there is a feeling of inevitability surrounding his future, with The Telegraph suggesting he is on the brink of being sacked.

Unless the Toffees manage to clinch a victory at Anfield, something they haven’t managed since 1999, it seems difficult to fathom a scenario in which the Portuguese manager is still in charge against Chelsea on Saturday.

As that feeling begins to become deeply entrenched in the mainstream media, the subject of who should actually make the call on Silva’s successor has emerged.

Bill Kenwright, Farhad Moshiri and Marcel Brands are three of the most prominent figures in the public eye but it is the latter who Phil McNulty believes should be making the final call.

McNulty, the chief football writer at the BBC, had this to say in his column:

‘Is it (the person tasked with appointing a replacement) director of football Marcel Brands, now on the club’s board and placed in charge of all football strategy?

‘This description alone suggests the Dutchman lured from PSV Eindhoven must call the shots and Moshiri should simply have the sign off.

‘Brands is the man with the global contacts book, the networking reputation. If Everton, as everyone suspects, want a new manager then his job description suggests he should be providing the name.’

Time to prove his credentials

There is plenty of intrigue surrounding Brands’ role at the club and how far he can revolutionise the club.

The ambition Everton have shown in the transfer market since he became the club’s director of football has been one of the most defining aspects of his time at Goodison Park, but Silva’s looming exit will provide him with the biggest challenge so far.

With Leicester City flying high in 2nd place, Wolves six points off a Champions League place and Arsenal and Man United languishing in 8th and 9th place respectively, the Premier League has been blown wide open this season.

It’s at this very juncture that Everton need to lay the foundation for a bright future, one which could see the club elevate into the top six and fulfil Moshiri’s vision for the club of competing regularly in the Champions League, and, as McNulty suggests, that basis for success must be constructed by the former PSV Eindhoven sporting director; his job description requires that much.

If Silva is dismissed from his post this week, Brands must take responsibility for deciding his successor.
