Newcastle fans hail Allan Saint-Maximin for latest performance

A number of Newcastle United fans have taken to social media to lavish praise on the performance of Allan Saint-Maximin in Saturday’s Premier League clash with Bournemouth.

The 22-year-old is still waiting for his first goal for the club but there is no getting away from the fact that he contributed to his team’s 2-1 win over the Cherries.

According to WhoScored, before being replaced in the final exchanges, Saint-Maximin had two shots, completed four successful dribbles and made two tackles.

He is a threat with his pace and power even if the end product isn’t always there.

And many of the Newcastle fans were impressed with the performance of the attacker, who scored 11 times in 74 games for Nice ahead of a switch to St James’ Park.

Things are starting to look up at Newcastle courtesy of back-to-back wins, and the club’s supporters seem to have found a new hero.

Man Utd could solve their creativity issues by playing Juan Mata deeper

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Goals. Goals. Goals. Or in Manchester United’s case, a lack of them. The Red Devils have built their entire history around swashbuckling football, and throwing the kitchen sink at the opposition. These days, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side’s attack closely resembles a domestic cat lazily pawing at a passing fly. No intent, no ambition and no creativity whatsoever.

The fact that they haven’t scored more than one goal in a game since the 4-0 thrashing of Chelsea in the opening Premier League match of the season makes for worrying reading. Marcus Rashford has been the subject of much criticism for his perceived role in their attacking demise, but that only tells half the story. Against Newcastle last weekend, the England international looked starved of service and completely isolated up top on his own, registering no shots on goal.

How much money could you make busking for a week as a freestyle footballer? Find out in the video below…

As one of the few genuine creators in the side, much would have been expected of Juan Mata. But games just appear to pass him by at the moment. What United desperately need to do however, is consider using the Spaniard in a more deeper position. Does Solskjaer really think they need both Fred and Scott McTominay in a midfield two? Talk about being defensive.

Getting Mata alongside the latter could well be the answer to getting more out of their attacking play. As per Understat, the 31-year-old has played in a central midfield 14 times over the course of his United career, and it is the position where he has the highest expected assists per 90 minutes (0.24). Allowing him to pick the ball up from the centre-backs, and immediately face forwards, rather than with his back to goal as he does in the number ten role, could make the most out of the side’s pacey attack.

The likes of Daniel James and Marcus Rashford have the speed to get in behind opposition defences over and over again, but they simply don’t get provided with enough opportunities to do so. Currently, Mata averages just 22.6 passes per game in the Premier League – a total that is the lowest amount of any league season in his entire career as per Whoscored. It goes without saying that the 5 foot 7 man hasn’t contributed a single goal or assist this year either.

The Red Devils simply need to get more out of the play-maker, and changing up his position so he can see more of the ball may be the cure they desperately need.

Man Utd fans slam teenage prospect Tahith Chong after Rochdale display

So it appears being 19 doesn’t give you a free pass. Tahith Chong has been tipped to enjoy a bright career by some, and featured prominently for Manchester United during the club’s pre-season tour.

The teenager is amongst a clutch of Red Devils youngsters looking to make their mark at Old Trafford, and was handed the chance to start against Rochdale in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

The Dutchman however failed to grab his opportunity and struggled to impose himself on the game. Before being subbed off in the 59th minute, Chong managed no shots on target, dribbles or accurate crosses.

After seeing the 19-year-old’s display, United fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the former Feyernoord man.

Many supporters of the Manchester side insisted he simply isn’t good enough to make it at this level, with one fan in particular describing him as a “poor man’s Stewart Downing”.

Some Red Devils fans hammered his end product, and labelled him as “atrocious”.

Newcastle fans react as Miguel Almiron nets first Paraguay goal

[ad_pod ]

Newcastle United attacker Miguel Almiron scored his first goal for Paraguay in the South American nation’s 4-2 win over Jordan on Tuesday.

Almiron is still waiting for his first Newcastle goal, having struggled to produce an end product since joining the Magpies from the MLS in January.

The 25-year-old has shown plenty of promise in the final third of the field, although he is also yet to register an assist in his 14 outings for Steve Bruce’s side.

Almiron was also waiting for his first international goal ahead of the clash with Jordan – that is no longer the case, though, with the attacker finding the back of the net courtesy of a close-range header.

And it could be good news for Newcastle ahead of their trip to division leaders Liverpool in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Rangers fans drooling over Nikola Katic’s form after dominant EL display

Rangers came up trumps against a difficult opponent on Thursday to gain entry into the Europa League group stages, and the performance of Nikola Katic has fans running out of superlatives for the towering Croatian.

The Gers faced a huge task after failing to find an away goal in the first leg in Poland, but earned a 1-0 win thanks to Alfredo Morelos’ late glancing header.

Of course, the Colombian’s big moment will steal all the newspaper headlines, but Katic is the man fans are all talking about.

The 22 year-old started last season impressively, but was left out of the side for a long period of time, with Steven Gerrard clearly thinking the break would do him good.

And it’s done exactly that, as he’s started this campaign in fine form, capping it off with an utterly dominant performance on Thursday night.

He received an 8.5 out of 10 in Football Scotland’s player ratings, with the outlet making reference to one particularly crucial intervention he made that lifted Ibrox to its feet.

Celtic could be in for Jose Cifuentes as Neil Lennon details transfer plans

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Neil Lennon is hoping to get a few more signings in by the end of the week and one of them could be Jose Cifuentes, based on claims by Alan Nixon.

What’s the story?

Lennon has opened the door for more recruits to come to Parkhead this summer as the Northern Irishman looks to reshape his Celtic squad. Speaking ahead of the Nomme Kalju second leg, he stated: “We will try and get one or two in before the next tie if we qualify, which we should do, for next week.”

The club has been linked with various different names this summer, particularly in defensive and central midfield positions, although the Celts boss rubbished rumours of a deal for former Aberdeen goalkeeper Freddie Woodman in the same report.

The club kick-off their Premiership season on Saturday against St. Johnstone and one would hope their squad is complete by then, and Nixon reckons they could sign 20 year-old Cifuentes, saying he is still available, but that the Bhoys want to sell a player first.

The young prospect is also a target for Manchester City.

Who is on the chopping block?

The journalist stated that while the Ecuador U20 international is available, there is work to be done before he can be signed.

It’s not clear who could be on the way out but there are definitely some candidates who could be set to leave Parkhead very soon.

Eboue Kouassi has been a target of Panathinaikos, according to sdna.gr, and given how little he featured for the club last season it would be no surprise to see him go. Olivier Ntcham meanwhile is another who could find himself on the chopping block after he stated he wants to leave Celtic Park to L’Equipe.

Check out what happened when Thogden mixed with some of Montenegro’s craziest ultras in the video below…

There’s also the ‘will they or won’t they’ Kieran Tierney to Arsenal saga that continues to rumble on, which would certainly free the funds to sign Manchester City target Cifuentes.

Yet this would come a the cost of losing a pivotal player, unlike if Ntcham or Eboue were to leave.

It’s disappointing that Celtic feel they need to wait to get rid of a player to bring in Cifuentes given the vast sums of money they have saved at the club. Yet, moving on someone like Kouassi while bringing in the Ecuadorian could be a great bit of business for Lennon’s men, shifting someone with no real part to play for a promising talent being chased by the likes of Pep Guardiola.

Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles needs to be on top form to stop Burnley

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal will face Burnley on Saturday in their second Premier League game of the season after beating Newcastle 1-0 last week. Ainsley Maitland-Niles had a fantastic performance, particularly going forward, but he will need to be just as adept moving in the other direction if the Gunners are to prevail against the Clarets.

On the chalkboard

Maitland-Niles was arguably Arsenal’s best player against the Toon, recording an 8.40 WhoScored rating. In attack, he successfully completed four dribbles, more than any of his teammates, and he also created the only goal of the game, which was scored by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The Gunners should have the lion’s share of possession in their next match, and the 21-year-old will be expected to provide once again offensively. But he will also need to keep his wits about him at the other end of the pitch, as Burnley could target his side in their attempts to get on the scoresheet.

Claret dangerous on left-wing

Last season, 41% of all of Burnley’s attacks came down their left flank, compared to 26% through the middle and 33% down the right. They put in a lot of crosses – 18 per game to be exact – and they look to exploit the left side of the pitch the most.

That area of the field has already been used to great affect this season. The Lancashire outfit started the campaign with a positive result against Southampton, beating the Saints 3-0 at Turf Moor. New signing – and new left-back – Erik Pieters hit the ground running for his new team, assisting two of the three strikes. The second one should be on Unai Emery and Maitland-Niles’ minds in particular; the former Stoke City defender was given far too much time to pick out Ashley Barnes in the middle.

Dwight McNeil, the Clarets’ 19-year-old left-winger, also started his season in impressive fashion, registering a 7.91 WhoScored rating for his performance. Along with Pieters, Maitland-Niles will his have his work cut out to stop them both if he does not concentrate on his defensive duties at the Emirates Stadium.

Throw summer signing Pepe’s potential first start into the equation as well, and it could be a very tricky afternoon for Arsenal’s young utility man.

West Ham Transfer Roundup: Offer made for Alvarez, Gueye news, Belotti interest

[ad_pod ]

What does the rest of the transfer window have in store for West Ham? If the latest rumours are anything to go by, there could be several new faces at the London Stadium before the start of next season. Today’s Hammers transfer roundup includes an offer made for a Mexican international, contact in regards to a French defensive midfielder and eyes on a Serie A striker.

Alvarez offer

According to Friday’s print edition of Mexican outlet Record (via Sport Witness), West Ham have made a formal offer for Club America defender Edson Alvarez. The report adds that both Wolves and Ajax have also tabled bids.

Pape Gueye contact

L’Equipe is reporting that West Ham have made contact with FC Metz in regards to Pape Gueye. The French U19 international has one year left on his contract and has also been the subject of interest from Leicester City and Watford, but Valencia appear to be leading the race for the 20-year-old.

Eyes on Belotti

With Marko Arnautovic potentially leaving the club as early as this weekend, West Ham are looking at Torino’s Andrea Belotti to replace him according to journalist Nicolo Schira. The Hammers are ready to offer €40m (£35.9m) for the 25-year-old striker and would pay the Italian international €3.5m (£3.1m)-a-year until 2024.
