Exclusive: John Hartson claims Tony Adams was one of the greatest leaders of men

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, John Hartson said that Tony Adams is “one of the greatest leaders of men” he has ever worked with.

Former Wales international Hartson played with the former Arsenal leader between 1995 and 1997. That period of time also coincided with Arsene Wenger’s arrival in north London too. Whilst the Gunners were trophyless during those two years the striker was at the club, the 44-year-old has lauded the influence of the 66-time England player.

He said, “Tony Adams is one of the greatest leaders of men I’ve ever worked with. Captain of England, captain of Arsenal at 25 years of age, they (great leaders) don’t come around too often.”

There is little wonder why there is a statue of Adams that now stands outside the Emirates Stadium. Quite frankly, few have ever had an impact on the Gunners quite like the now 52-year-old.

Appointed captain at Highbury aged 21, he led the team to the title in his maiden season in the role, and he would go on to wear the armband for another 14 years. During that time, he would win 10 major trophies, which included four league titles, three F.A Cups and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1994.

Overall, he made 669 appearances for the Gunners, and has now gone down in folklore. Even with the arrival of Frenchman Wenger, who revolutionised not only Arsenal but also English football, Adams remained a constant and was continually trusted to be the leader of the dressing room.

He had his problems, of course – who hasn’t? – and he has struggled to convert his playing prowess into the managerial world, but Arsenal fans won’t care.

The word legend gets thrown about an awful lot these days. Adams, though, embodies everything that it means. In north London, he will never be forgotten.

Former Liverpool player Stan Collymore identifies the three best young players at the club

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former player Stan Collymore is excited about Liverpool’s prospects in the future due to the quality of the young players already at the club.

What did he say

Liverpool took a different approach to transfers this summer and with Jurgen Klopp not looking to add to his first-team squad, young players with the potential to develop were the focus of the club.

Harvey Elliott and Sepp van den Berg arrived from Fulham and PEC Zwolle respectively, and will feature in Liverpool’s youth set-up until they are considered ready for the step-up to the senior squad.

The club has enjoyed success from its academy in recent years through the emergence of Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Collymore is a big admirer of the right-back.

Speaking on his podcast, The Last Word with Stan Collymore , the former striker picked out three big prospects at the club: “The future is very bright for Liverpool.

Harry Wilson, he’s going to be a massive plus for them and I do wonder, thinking ahead, Harvey Elliott, a young teenager that’s gone to Liverpool, [along with] Harry Wilson – we’ve still got Trent Alexander-Arnold – that when those two guys hopefully go into the Liverpool team, Trent will be a veteran.”

Of the three only Alexander-Arnold has featured for Liverpool in a competitive game, but Wilson is edging closer to first-team involvement and if he does well on loan at Bournemouth this season – which he is currently with two goals in two games – then he could become a part of Klopp’s plans soon.

How important is promoting youth for Liverpool

Compared to clubs like Tottenham and Arsenal there have not been many Liverpool academy products who have worked their way into first-team contention in recent years, but Alexander-Arnold is a shining example of how well it could work.

Big things are expected of Elliott, too. Last season the 16-year-old became the youngest ever player to play in the Premier League after he tallied an impressive record of five goals and three assists in his 12 youth appearances for Fulham.

Klopp has proved he isn’t afraid to hand youth players a chance, last season Ki-Jana Hoever and Curtis Jones featured on the pitch whilst Rhian Brewster was included in the matchday squad against Barcelona and Tottenham in the Champions League.

Judging by their accomplishments so far Collymore is right to name the three players he did, and if Wilson and Elliott emulate the attitude shown by Alexander-Arnold they may not be too far behind him.

Manchester United fans react as Joel Pereira completes loan move to Hearts

[ad_pod ]

Having signed for Manchester United back in 2012, Joel Pereira was part of the team that won the 2014/2015 U21 Development League title and subsequently extended his contract at Old Trafford.

However, since his time at academy level with United, the goalkeeper has spent the majority of his career out on loan at various sides.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed spells with Rochdale, Belenenses, Vitoria Setubal and Kortrijk, and it has now been confirmed that he will once again spend the season away from Manchester.

As revealed on the club’s official website, Pereira has joined Scottish side Hearts on a season-long loan in order to “obtain regular first-team football and continue his development between the posts”.

After hearing the update on Pereira’s future, United fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the matter.

Many supporters of the Manchester side felt he should have been sold this summer instead, and insisted he has no chance of breaking past the likes of David de Gea and Dean Henderson to claim the number one jersey at United.

Indeed, some fans suggested the club should simply “put him out of his misery” and just release him.

Check out some of the reaction of United fans below:

Manchester United fans disagree with Sir Alex Ferguson’s assessment of Harry Maguire

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson believes the club should sign Leicester City defender Harry Maguire this summer, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The paper are not carrying quotes from the former Old Trafford boss but cite sources that claim Ferguson believes the Foxes defender is an “ideal signing” for the club.

United have already tried to sign the player this summer, with a reported £70m bid for the England international rejected last week.

Who is Man Utd’s worst ever player? Bebe? Eric Djemba-Djemba? The fan in the video below actually think it’s one of the Red Devils’ current crop…

Maguire has made over 100 Premier League appearances, but there are doubts about his ability to make the step up to a top six side that will push for UEFA Champions League qualification spots.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is currently in the middle of a squad revamp though and the recent bid suggests United’s recruitment team are intent on landing their man.

Many Man United fans aren’t too keen on his potential arrival and have taken issue with Sir Alex Ferguson’s reported opinion, taking to Twitter to share their thoughts this weekend…

Pundit View: Mark Wilson urges Celtic board to back Neil Lennon with cash this summer

[ad_pod ]

Former Celtic defender Mark Wilson believes Neil Lennon must be properly backed by the club during this summer’s transfer window, as reported by The Daily Record.

What’s he said?

Despite winning a treble for the third successive year last term, this summer definitely feels like a transitional one for the Celtic squad.

After filling in for Brendan Rodgers mid-season, Lennon will finally have a chance to stamp his own authority on the team and make additions that better suit his vision of how the Hoops should play.

That will of course cost money and Wilson is adamant that the recruitment job ahead can’t be done on the cheap, urging the Celtic board to back the new manager with all the resources he needs.

C’mon the Hoops’ Keith remembers the late Phil O’Donnell in the video below…

As quoted by The Daily Record, the 35-year-old said:

“You can’t say just because Neil’s a Celtic man, he’s been here before, he loves the club, all that stuff, that you can sell him short with, say, £8million to beef up the squad.

“It has to be an awful lot more than that, considering how many positions they need to fill.

“It’s going to take a chunk of cash. He needs centre halves, a striker, a right back, cover at left back.

“Every good squad has a cycle. You can’t keep winning without freshening up and Neil has proven in the past he can find a quality player or two.

“You can trust him with a transfer kitty, and with nine and maybe 10 coming up, Peter has to be aware of what the fans will expect.”

Is he right?

The positions Wilson mentions are the definite priorities for Celtic this summer with the midfield and wing positions looking pretty strong barring any departures.

He is also right to suggest it will cost a fair wedge of money, but the club would be the first to point out it’s about investing in players wisely, rather than simply spending for the sake of spending.

Celtic often stick to a defined profile of player when entering the market and that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.

The most successful stars to come through Celtic Park in recent years have been young talents not quite yet at their prime who can improve in the first-team and be sold on for a much larger fee.

Perhaps key will also be getting through the early rounds of the UEFA Champions League qualifying process unscathed – reaching the group stages or at least confirming a place in the UEFA Europa League groups unlocks both personnel and cash available to Lennon.

The perception of Lennon’s appointment is that it was a cheap option, but the signs are there the club will invest in this squad. There’s too obvious a need and recruitment failure will have the Hoops support up in arms.

Gotta feel for the lad: Leeds fans unhappy with Ideguchi’s treatment

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are expressing sympathy for Yosuke Ideguchi as his spell at the club looks to be coming to an end.

The Japan international never got a chance at Elland Road, failing to make a single appearance for the Whites after joining them in 2018.

He instead spent the last 18 months out on loan at Cultural Leonesa in Spain and then Greuther Furth in Germany.

Now he seems destined to head back to his home country as he edges closer to a move to Japanese side Gamba Osaka.

This would signal a return to his former club for the midfielder, and he will certainly be hoping to get his career back on track in the J1 League.

He is seemingly quite a talented player, making 12 appearances for Japan at such a young age, and Leeds fans have expressed their sympathy that his time in Yorkshire didn’t work out.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on Twitter…

Liverpool: Selling Xherdan Shaqiri to sign Samuel Chukwueze would be excellent business

In the first half of the Premier League season, Xherdan Shaqiri looked to be one of the best signings of the summer, but fast-forward to now, and it’s easy to say pundits and fans alike were a bit too excited early on.

Six goals and two assists in the first 19 games from a player that only cost £13 million was a solid return for Liverpool, but since the turn of the year, Shaqiri has barely had an impact on the Reds team, assisting just once in the second half of the Premier League campaign, and now there’s talk of the Swiss international could be ready to be move on from Anfield for a younger model.

According to Goal via the Metro, Liverpool are considering selling Shaqiri to make room for Villarreal winger Samuel Chukwueze, who had been a reported target for the Reds for some time.

The Nigerian winger would be a welcome addition to Liverpool, being able to play on both wings will mean both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane both have cover for their respective positions, and a departure from Merseyside will do Shaqiri some good.

Valued at £25 million Transfermarkt, Liverpool stand in a great position to make a profit on the Swiss attacker, and although Shaqiri has been underwhelming in the second half of the season there is no doubt that the former Bayern Munich man will be able to attract interest from some big clubs.

Shaqiri’s move might not have worked out as most fans thought it would, but moving the attacker off for profit and bringing in Chukwueze will be another masterstroke from Liverpool, who will be signing a player who can one day become a starting attacker for the team.

Liverpool fans, would you sell Shaqiri if it meant signing Chukwueze? Let us know!
