Where is Rodgers taking Liverpool exactly?

Carlisle at home was surely a game for Brendan Rodgers to ease the mounting pressure on his Liverpool managerial career. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite go to plan as the reds scraped through via penalties against a side ranked 65 places below them in the football pyramid.

Rodgers joined Liverpool as manager in June 2012 and immediately began installing his passing philosophy into the team. In his first season in charge the reds finished 7th, one place higher than their previous season.

But it was the 2013/14 season where Rodgers and Liverpool saw real improvement. They eventually finished second behind Manchester City after winning eleven straight games and leading the table with three games to go. Unfortunately a 2-0 home defeat to Chelsea followed by a 3-3 draw away at Crystal Palace was enough to gift the title to City. The stars of that season were undoubtedly the forward pairing of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge, who between them managed to rack up 52 Premier League goals.

[ffc-gal cat=”liverpool” no=”5″]

The start of the 2014/15 season saw Liverpool’s prize asset Luis Suarez sold to Barcelona for a fee in the region of £75million and he wasn’t the only important red’s player to leave that summer, with Pepe Reina leaving for Bayern Munich and Daniel Agger returning to his native Denmark with Brondby. Rodgers, however did spend £117 million on players he thought would replace those who had left, but also players that would further strengthen the Anfield club.

Suarez’s replacement arrived in the shape of extrovert forward Mario Balotelli (£16million) with Agger’s being Southampton centre half Dejan Lovren ($20million). Rodgers also brought in Southampton duo Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana, German international Emre Can and Benfica winger Lazar Markovic, all for a combined total of £59 million.

Rodger’s signings were not making an impact, with Balotelli being more of a hindrance than Suarez’s replacement, Lambert making only 7 Premier League starts and Can, Markovic and Lovren all failing to impress and live up to their hefty price tags. Liverpool stuttered and, once again, finished outside the top four in 6th position. In doing so, Rodger’s picked up the unwanted title as the only Liverpool manager since the 1950’s to not win a trophy in his first three seasons in charge.

At the end of the 2014/15 season, Liverpool’s hero and leader Steven Gerrard left the club to join the growing list of world class names in the MLS. Gerrard had announced that if he had been offered a contract during the summer of 2014 he would have signed for another year at Anfield; that offer did not arrive until November and, with Rodgers monitoring Gerrard’s playing time, the moment had arrived for the famous number 8 to finally end his wonderful Liverpool career. But could Rodgers have done more to keep a player that would surely have still made an impact on and off the pitch?

With Liverpool starting their current Premier League season slowly and currently lying 13th with two wins, two draws and two defeats to their name, the pressure is increasing on Brendan Rodgers. Rodgers appears unsure of his best starting 11 and can be seen regularly changing formation between a 3-4-1-2, a 4-3-3 and a 4-3-1-2, which can only unsettle his players further.

Rodgers has frustrated many with his constant defence of his team in post-match interviews, regardless of their result or performance. Liverpool lost convincingly at fierce rivals Manchester United with Rodgers starting with inexperienced full back Joe Gomez who later gave away a penalty for United’s vital second goal. The young full back had started the season well, but was Rodgers naïve to not start a more experienced defender? Especially with Sakho, Toure and Moreno all on the bench and, especially, given the magnitude of the game.

It certainly will not get any easier for Rodgers as his side entertain fellow strugglers Aston Villa this weekend. They then face a tough trip to local Merseyside rivals Everton, followed by a trip to face an ever improving Tottenham side.

With former Premier League, Seria A and Ligue 1 title winning coach Carlo Ancelotti currently unemployed and being touted as Rodgers’ potential replacement, along with German mastermind Jürgen Klopp, Rodgers will no doubt be feeling the pressure.

A top four finish is again very unlikely this season and Rodgers must focus on bringing some silverware to the Anfield trophy cabinets, or risk being becoming the first Premier League managerial casualty.

Antony has arrived! Man Utd winners, losers and ratings as Rashford double seals win over Arsenal

The new £85-million signing lit up Old Trafford on his debut as Erik ten Hag's side made it four wins in a row

Manchester United brought Arsenal's 100 per cent start to the season to a shuddering halt with a major statement of intent on Sunday. New signing Antony raised the roof at Old Trafford with a debut goal, while Marcus Rashford struck twice in the second half to seal a 3-1 win.

It is now four straight wins for Erik ten Hag's resurgent side – and for those inside the stadium, here was the clearest sign yet of the Dutchman's revolution taking shape.

United are now up to fifth – three points off leaders Arsenal – after back-to-back defeats in their opening two games left them rooted to the foot of the table.

In a clash that brought to mind the Titanic battles between two formerly dominant sides of English football, it was United who triumphed.

But, even in defeat, Arsenal remain at the top of the Premier League – and perhaps this was evidence that both teams are ready to challenge at the very top of the table once more.

Getty ImagesThe Winners

Antony:

The Brazilian couldn't have asked for more on his debut, as he opened the scoring while showing glimpses of the thrills he can bring to this United attack.

At one point, Arsenal fans mocked him when he opted against taking on Oleksandr Zinchenko when he squared up to the left-back, but he showed the intelligence to keep hold of possession. Moments later, United had the ball in the back of the net thanks to his decisive finish.

The standing ovation he received when replaced after an hour was very well deserved.

Bruno Fernandes:

Relishing his role as captain, Fernandes' commitment to the cause is beyond question, putting his body on the line throughout.

But it was his game-changing qualities that came to the fore here – with his driving run opening up Arsenal for Antony's goal before his perfectly-executed through-ball set Rashford away to score in the second half.

Marcus Rashford:

There are still doubts as to whether Rashford can play through the middle long-term, but he is proving pretty effective there while Ten Hag figures out his strongest attack.

Showed great awareness to set up Antony's goal and then displayed his qualities on the left when moved out wide in the second half with two well-taken strikes.

These are early days under a new manager, but the impact Ten Hag has had on Rashford is already clear to see.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesThe Losers

Arsenal:

Mikel Arteta's side arrived at Old Trafford with the only 100 per cent record left in the Premier League – but that came crashing down in the face of their first major test.

This result will raise doubts about their credentials to maintain their impressive early form, and all eyes will be on their next game against Everton.

Can the leaders bounce back straight away – or will this be a case of their bubble being burst?

Cristiano Ronaldo:

On the bench once again, Ronaldo faces a fight to force his way back into the starting line up.

The arrival of Antony creates even greater competition for places, while Rashford is clearly Ten Hag's preferred option through the middle at the moment.

Ronaldo looked determined to make an impact after coming on – and the closing of the transfer window should ensure there are no more distractions regarding his future – but he will not be happy with his involvement so far this season.

Arsenal fans:

They mocked Antony when he showed some flashy footwork in the first half. But they were very quickly silenced when he had the ball in the back of the net moments later.

Getty ImagesManchester United Ratings: Defence

David De Gea (7/10):

Two good saves denied Martinelli in the first half when Arsenal dominated.

Diogo Dalot (5/10):

Cross could have led to Eriksen opening the scoring, but he struggled to track Martinelli and inadvertently poked the ball into Saka's path to score.

Raphael Varane (8/10):

Caught out of position for Saka's goal, but an otherwise authoritative display in the heart of defence, which allowed United to soak up Arsenal pressure.

Lisandro Martinez (8/10):

Rescued Malacia when beaten in the box by Saka in the first half and typified another full-blooded display when chasing down a dangerous Jesus run.

Tyrell Malacia (7/10):

Caught out by Saka in the first half, but generally picked up good positions and worked to progress United up the pitch.

Scott McTominay (8/10):

Keeping Casemiro out of the team and deservedly so. Energy and positioning impressive as he cut out Arsenal attacks.

Christian Eriksen (9/10):

Use of the ball was excellent again and he played a key role all three of United's goals. Outstanding performance.

Bruno Fernandes (9/10):

His burst forward opened Arsenal up in the lead-up to Antony's opener, and then his precision pass created Rashford's first. All action display.

Chigumbura disappointed with side's batting lapse

Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura was disappointed after Zimbabwe failed to chase down a target of 256 against India in Harare, losing by a narrow margin of four runs

Liam Brickhill10-Jul-2015Elton Chigumbura took 173 matches to reach his first ODI hundred, and he now has two in two games. Neither has been a matchwinning one, however – his second, in the first ODI against India was not enough to take Zimbabwe over the line in a 256-run chase – and despite his success at No. 4 for Zimbabwe the experience of moving up the order has been a bittersweet one.”I was delighted scoring my second hundred,” said Chigumbura. “I think it’s my second or third time batting at No. 4 – most of my career I’ve been batting at number seven. It’s a good challenge which I’ve enjoyed so hopefully I get more big scores like that. But the team comes first – it’s always disappointing to lose the game. As an individual I’m happy with the performance that I did, but the main thing is the team. Being on the losing side is always disappointing.”Chigumbura was into the action by the 13th over, as Zimbabwe lost two early wickets, and remained until the end. Yet the highest partnership he was involved in was 86 for the seventh wicket with Graeme Cremer, after Zimbabwe’s middle order stumbled through the chase.”I thought the way we kept losing wickets, we didn’t get the momentum we needed because we had to keep rebuilding. We kept on trying to build a partnership but up to the end when I ended up batting with the specialist bowlers instead of a batsman, that’s probably where we lost the game. We didn’t have specialist batsmen out there in the last 10 overs.”Cremer’s admirable hand in the fightback ended when he reverse-paddled a high full toss to backward point off the last ball of the 49th over, with 10 runs still needed. Chigumbura and Donald Tiripano managed to scramble four from the first three deliveries, but as the match came down to the wire Chigumbura kept the strike and backed himself to hit a boundary. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s pinpoint accuracy made that impossible.”I wanted to keep the strike as much as possible but I thought he bowled well in that last over so it was hard,” said Chigumbura. “I was just waiting for the one that he was going to miss and make sure I executed well, but I didn’t get any. It was disappointing after fighting so hard. When you come so close and you don’t get over the line, it’s very disappointing.”

Mitchell backs up Leach five-for to put Worcestershire on top

Daryl Mitchell hit an unbeaten 80 as Worcestershire consolidated an increasingly powerful position at the end of the second day at the Ageas Bowl

ScorecardDaryll Mtichell led a strong reply•Getty ImagesDaryl Mitchell hit an unbeaten 80 as Worcestershire consolidated an increasingly powerful position at the end of the second day at the Ageas Bowl. At the premature close caused by bad light, Worcestershire were a healthy 221 for 3, just one run behind Hampshire’s first innings total of 222.Hampshire began the day 119 for 4 but lost their remaining six wickets in the morning session for the addition of 103 runs, pace bowler Joe Leach doing a substantial portion of the damage with 5 for 63. This took Leach’s tally for the season to 23 and Worcestershire soon capitalised on his good work on a wicket that offered plenty of assistance to the pace bowlers throughout.Mitchell and Richard Oliver put on 62 for the first Worcestershire wicket, Mitchell and Ton Fell added a further 94 for the second and as Hampshire ran out of ideas, Alex Gidman helped add another 58 for the third.Hampshire struggled in the first session from the moment they lost James Vince to another disappointingly low score in what has so far been a poor season for the 24 year old about whom so much is expected. Vince had made 8 when he mistimed a pull against Leach and played on and apart from the obdurate Will Smith, newly capped by Hampshire, resistance was only spasmodic.Adam Wheater was sixth out at 170 to a catch at the wicket by Ben Cox – his second of four in total – before Smith edged into his own stumps after making 40 to provide New Zealander Colin Munro with a wicket in his first over in first-class cricket in England. Ed Barnard removed Sean Ervine to another Cox catch at 205 and Leach returned to dismiss Danny Briggs and last man Brad Wheal in five balls to wrap up a good morning for Worcestershire. In contrast Worcestershire found batting altogether easier when it was their turn, Hampshire having to wait until the 18th over before Gareth Berg induced an edge from Oliver that Smith pouched at slip.Fell hit six fours in his 48 before Berg found another edge which Liam Dawson snared in the slips and then Gidman fell at 214 to a tumbling catch by Vince as stand-in wicketkeeper following a knee injury sustained by Wheater.Mitchell’s innings has so far occupied 202 balls and included eight fours and it was he who earned the highest praise from bowling hero Leach. “We have got a very high regard for him,” Leach said. “He is the lynchpin of our batting and has not got as many runs this season as he would have liked. You could see by the reception he got when he came off the field how delighted we were for him.”At this level if you bowl out a side for 222 you have to be happy. It vindicated our decision to bowl first. It was a very disciplined performance by our bowling unit. We aimed to keep the run rate down and while the first wicket was a long time coming on the first day, four fell quickly and we were able to maintain the momentum.”Hampshire coach Dale Benkenstein said: “Over the past year we have not played as poorly as this all round. Credit to Worcestershire they have stuck to their game plan, particularly in the field.”We have been really poor and I am not used to that. They did not give us any runs, which was completely the opposite to us.”

Worcestershire secure Ajmal deal

Worcestershire have secured a deal to bring Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal back to New Road in 2015 for at least the second half of the season from July.

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Feb-2015Worcestershire have secured a deal to bring Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal back to New Road in 2015 for at least the second half of the season from July.Ajmal, 37, has successfully remodelled his action after being cited for throwing, sending down 12,000 deliveries, and was cleared to bowl again by the ICC last month.Worcestershire could have Ajmal available for the first two months of the season if Pakistan’s tour to Bangladesh, pencilled in for April and May, does not go ahead – the two boards are currently in negotiations – but he will definitely arrive after Pakistan’s tour of Sri Lanka concludes at the start of July.Ajmal is crucial to Worcestershire’s chances of survival in Division One of the County Championship. Last year he took 63 wickets at 16.47 in just nine matches – five of which Worcestershire won – to propel his adopted county to a most-unexpected promotion. Worcestershire did not lose in the Championship when Ajmal was in the side last season.”I’ve had this difficult spell of my career with my action but I knew I would come through it and have had the support not only of Pakistan but also Worcestershire throughout,” Ajmal said.”Worcestershire have all the time stood by me and I can assure them I will repay the faith they have shown in me this season. I would love to be with Worcestershire as long as possible so I can help the club achieve their high goals and also help establish them in Division One.”Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes added: “I’m delighted Saeed is coming back. He’s very important in what is hopefully going to be a successful season for us and is an important member of the dressing room.”He brings a lot of confidence to the team as well which is really important for this young group of players. He has made a tremendous impact. He is a real quality performer as all our members and supporters know.”Worcestershire are back in Division One of the County Championship after a two-year absence. They begin their new campaign at home to champions Yorkshire on April 12.

Matthew Spriegel, the former Surrey and Northamptonshire allrounder, has announced his retirement via Twitter. Spriegel, 27, was released by Northamptonshire at the end of the 2014 season and he has decided not to look for another club.Spriegel joined Northamptonshire at the end of 2012, having come through the academy at Surrey. A useful batsman whose offspin was particularly effective in white-ball cricket, he played a vital role in Surrey’s 2011 Clydesdale Bank 40 victory, hitting the winning runs at Lord’s, and was also an ever-present as Northamptonshire won the Friends Life t20 in 2013.He moved in search of more first-class opportunities but, despite being involved in Northamptonshire’s Championship promotion, only managed three half-centuries in two seasons. Northants endured a difficult 2014, failing to get out of their group in either limited-overs competition and finishing bottom of Division One.Spriegel tweeted: “I would like to take this opportunity to thanks my team-mates, coaches and fans of both Surrey and Northamptonshire for their support. I have been so lucky to have played cricket professionally for the last nine years. I have been fortunate to play with and against some of the best players in the world. Along the way I travelled the country and the world making lifelong friends and memories doing something I love.”Hitting the winning runs in a Lord’s final and winning the T20 are moments that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Finally I would like to thank my family and friends for their unwavering support through the highs and lows (there were plenty) of my career.”
