Crystal Palace: McArthur a fine purchase at £7m

Crystal Palace’s deadline day business in the summer of 2014 was fairly subdued, to say the least.

It saw Zeki Fryers join from Tottenham, and also played host to the woeful piece of negotiating that saw Glenn Murray join Reading on loan while Kevin Doyle arrived as his replacement – grim.

However, that specific deadline day did see James McArthur arrive from Wigan for a then club-record £7m.

The Scotland international had helped Wigan win the FA Cup during his time with the Latics, although he was hardly a marquee capture by Steve Parish having come from the Championship, if we were to be snobbish.

However, even the least-snobbish among us surely wouldn’t have foreseen McArthur being this good.

The former Hamilton man has become a club icon at Selhurst Park since his £7m move, to say the least.

McArthur has been involved in more Premier League wins than any other player in the club’s history, partaking in 67 victories for the Eagles – Wilfried Zaha stands second in that list with 64 to his name.

Furthermore, the 32-year-old has also made the second-most Premier League appearances for Crystal Palace with 188 to his name, making 199 appearances for the south Londoners in total.

If you were to divide his transfer fee by the amount of Premier League wins he has helped Palace achieve, then you’d discover that each victory involving McArthur has cost the Eagles just £104.5k, which is pretty good value for money after almost six years of service.

The Scot continues to be a key performer under Roy Hodgson to this day, and with his endless energy and spirit, it feels like he’ll have plenty of time left to make these numbers look even more glowing in his favour.

He is arguably the finest of Parish’s purchases in the last decade, if not since he took over in 2010, with all things considered.

Did he really play for us?! No Palace fan has managed to name all of these obscure Eagles signings….

In other news, this misfiring Crystal Palace target would partly help Parish and Freedman solve one huge issue…

Leeds’ own goal record was always going to be broken under Bielsa

Something interesting happened at Leeds United this week.

Well, aside from the obvious interest around Eddie Nketiah being recalled and their game against West Brom.

The Whites broke an all-time club record as they benefitted from their sixth own goal of the season, a tally higher than in any campaign in the club’s history.

Some may call this lucky, but it was always going to happen under Marcelo Bielsa.

Own goals

The idea that own goals are lucky is a bit outdated and too simplistic.

No player wants to put the ball in their own net, but if a ball comes in that a player simply can’t deal with they’re liable to put one past their own goalkeeper.

Leeds’ system is set up to put defenders in these types of positions.

Always going to happen

Bielsa’s system basically invites teams to score own goals due to the number of counter-attacks Leeds launch, and the number of crosses they put in.

Think about how hard it is to clear a regular cross to safety, and that becomes even harder when you’re running back in the wrong direction.

Leeds have scored the joint-highest number of counter-attacking goals in the Championship this term, while also putting in the highest number of crosses per match in the division.

Those two stats create a deadly recipe that defenders simply won’t want to deal with. It inevitably creates dangerous situations where opposition players are left in perilous positions to defend the ball.

Leeds breaking this record was inevitable under Bielsa and the fact that it has taken just 26 league games for it to happen shows that it’s no fluke.

In other news, Phil Hay has urged Marcelo Bielsa to make one change at Leeds.

Revealed: 94% of Everton fans want Vlasic to return next season

[ad_pod ]

Plenty of Everton fans have been giving their verdict on the future of Nikola Vlasic, and a whopping 94 per cent of fans want Marco Silva to give him another chance.

Vlasic played himself back into the minds of many Everton fans last weekend, as the young Croatian absolutely bossed Ross Barkley at Wembley.

Croatia fell to a 2-1 defeat courtesy of a late fight back from Gareth Southgate’s side, but Vlasic’s display at the number ten position was a sight to behold.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”334357″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Fixture in Focus Tottenham v Chelsea”]

The 20-year-old provided the assist for the visitors’ goal, completed two key passes, two dribbles and also won three tackles.

After being stuck out on the wing by Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce, the youngster has excelled in a central position on loan at CSKA Moscow.

His speed with the ball, quick thinking, work ethic and versatility could make him the perfect attacking midfielder in Silva’s system, and a huge majority of fans think he still has a future at Goodison.

With Gylfi Sigurdsson turns 30 at the beginning of next season, could Vlasic be his future replacement? You can view the full poll results down below…

Opinion: Zaha-dependent Crystal Palace need duo to raise their game

Crystal Palace’s winless run without Wilfried Zaha in the team continued after losing 2-0 to Southampton at Selhurst Park last weekend with their talisman sidelined through injury.

Last season, the Eagles lost all of the nine games they played in Zaha’s absence, and the trend of failing to pick up wins — or a single point for that matter — when the 25-year-old is unavailable only looks set to continue if the game against Southampton is anything to go by.

Simply put, it is not good enough and manager Roy Hodgson must start demanding more from his players — regardless of Zaha’s availability — starting with Christian Benteke and Andros Townsend.

Christian Benteke

Having been brought in for big money from Liverpool back in 2016 and arrived with a reputation as being one of the top strikers in the Premier League, Benteke has turned out to be nothing but a massive disappointment.

The Belgian initially took to life in south London well after managing to score 15 league goals in his first season at Crystal Palace.

However, he has declined massively since, registering only three Premier League goals in 31 appearances last term to put his fall from grace into perspective.

Ultimately, sooner or later, Crystal Palace will have to make a decision about what to do with the 27-year-old.

But, until then, for the sake of Crystal Palace’s chances of retaining their Premier League status, Benteke has to start scoring, especially if Zaha is not in the side.

Andros Townsend

Townsend offers significantly more in attack than Benteke, but there is always this feeling that there is another level for the 27-year-old to reach.

Townsend is brilliant at getting past the opposition’s left-back and then cutting inside to arrive in more central areas of the pitch; however, a lot of the time not much comes after that.

The England international’s end product is still far from perfect, often firing a shot way over the crossbar or misplacing a cross.

Considering the positions he tends to pick up in the final third, Townsend should really be delivering better numbers in terms of both goals and assists.

If Crystal Palace want to progress and avoid constant relegation battles, then the likes of Townsend and Benteke have to step up instead of relying on Zaha every weekend.

Tottenham Hotspur fans want Eriksen, Alli dropped

It was another frustrating evening for Tottenham Hotspur as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men have failed to win their last three Premier League games.

The negative run began with a 2-0 loss to arch rivals Arsenal and that was followed up with a 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion.

On Tuesday night, the team had an opportunity to get back on track with a trip to Leicester, but goals from Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez damaged them.

Harry Kane managed to pull a goal back for Spurs, but they were unable to build on that.

As it stands, the North London outfit are 13 points adrift of league leaders Manchester City and that could be extended to 16 if Pep Guardiola’s side beat Southampton on Wednesday evening.

Tottenham’s title race has taken a massive hit, and now fans are turning on some of the club’s key players.

Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen failed to impress the supporters, and now some want the pair to be dropped for this weekend’s game against Watford.

Manchester United fans react as Anthony Joshua makes training ground appearance

Manchester United were unable to return to winning ways against Tottenham in the last ever game at White Hart Lane over the weekend as Jose Mourinho stuck to his word and made eight changes once again as he prepares his side for the Europa League final.

Before they made the trip down to north London, however, the Red Devils had a surprise visitor at their Carrington training ground, heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua, fresh from his Wembley Stadium bout with Wladimir Klitschko.

The London born boxer posed for photos with Mourinho and the squad as well as having a kick-about with the likes of captain Wayne Rooney and defender Chris Smalling.

With United’s defence coming in for criticism more than a few times this season, many fans were quick to jump on social media and suggest that Mourinho should give AJ a run-out in the final against Ajax on 24th May…

Twitter went Joe Hart crazy on Wednesday

It’s fair to say the press has given Claudio Bravo a tough time since his move to the Premier League, as they remain unanimous in their support of the ousted Joe Hart, but there can be no complaints following last night’s horror show in the Champions League.

Bravo returned to the Nou Camp on Wednesday and aided his former employers Barcelona massively in the fixture, earning himself a straight red card after cocking up a kick and then subsequently handling the resulting effort from Luis Suarez outside the penalty area.

Understandably, Twitter then erupted, and one man was the focus of the comments as Hart quickly went viral – despite the fact he wasn’t in action for loan club Torino.

It was only a matter of time until this happened, given the adoration Hart has in England despite some shaky performances, and everyone wished they knew what he was thinking as he witnessed the awful performance of the man signed to replace him…

Magpies back in the big time after 20-year absenceHanded the toughest of group stage drawsLoving every minute of time among Europe's eliteWHAT HAS HAPPENED?

Newcastle United are getting a taste of what that is like in 2023-24, with the Magpies returning to elite European competition for the first time in 20 years. Unsurprisingly, there have been plenty of smiles on show while gracing the most prestigious of sporting stages, with a video of Jacob Murphy taking everything in ahead of a meeting with AC Milan on Matchday One going viral – as he looked like a child on Christmas Day.

AdvertisementWHAT WAS GOING THROUGH MURPHY’S HEAD?

Speaking in association with , Murphy told GOAL when asked what was going through his head as the famous anthem echoed around the iconic San Siro: “It was taking in the whole experience. I was surprised at how quickly the music came on! We stand in the line and then the music shoots on straight away. It was that goosebump moment. It was the realisation that I did it, I’m playing at the pinnacle of club football in the Champions League. It was our first game as a club back in the Champions League after over two decades and I was one of the players selected to represent the club in that first game. Huge sense of pride and part of my journey. It was amazing, just to take it in and enjoy the moment because that was my first start in the Champions League and I wanted to really remember it and take in everything that was going on."

WHY IS THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE MUSIC SO SPECIAL?

Pressed further on why the Champions League music is so special, with several players having spoken of its importance to them down the years, Murphy added: “It’s not just the game itself, it’s everything. Everything to do with the competition – the advertising around the pitch, how professionally done everything is, it’s elite. That’s the best way to describe it. There is a lot going on around it and it’s nice to be in the heart of it.”

He added on Newcastle creating memories that will last a lifetime: “It’s cliche that we all want to play at the top level and stuff like that, but for a lot of us it was probably something that we didn’t think was going to happen – playing Champions League football. But the new owners came in, then Eddie [Howe] came and that’s when everyone really began to dream again. That’s the big thing, we’re dreaming again and these dreams from when we were younger might have faded, might have thought that’s probably not going to be reality, but everyone began to believe – the club, the fan base. It’s come together really nicely.”

STATSportsWHERE DID NEWCASTLE PLAYERS WATCH THE DRAW?

The group stage draw for the 2023-24 Champions League took place on August 31. Newcastle were placed into the so-called ‘Group of Death’ alongside Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund. Howe’s squad thoroughly enjoyed the occasion, though, with Murphy saying of where players and staff watched the draw from: “We were at the training ground. We had a special event put on for us. It was fantastic – we had all the players and their families, coaching staff and all of the ground staff from the training ground, physios, chefs and everyone in the catering department, cleaners, groundsmen and all their families. Everyone watched it together, with a lot of activities going on and a big screen to watch the draw. That was a special moment for everyone involved in the achievement, to all be together and take it in. To get the draw, we were buzzing. It was a tough draw, but we’re in the Champions League now. An easy group would be nice, but you want those iconic teams. You want to play in huge games and really leave a mark. Because we were in Pot 4, we always knew that we were going to have a tough ride. To have that calibre of opposition, I think it worked out for the best. It’s really good that we’re testing ourselves against the elite. It stands us in good stead to show where we are in our journey, how we can go up against the so-called big boys in European football.”

Amario Cozier-Duberry: Arsenal's teenage sensation dreaming of being the next Bukayo Saka

The 17-year-old winger has already featured in Mikel Arteta's matchday squad on numerous occasions after impressing for the Gunners' academy teams

The long line of Arsenal success stories to emerge from the club’s Hale End academy has been well documented. From Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe, who are currently starring for Mikel Arteta’s first-team in north London, to Joe Willock and Alex Iwobi, who are forging excellent careers for themselves elsewhere, the list just goes on and on.

And the most exciting thing for the Gunners is that conveyor belt of talent from the academy is showing no sign of slowing up just yet.

In fact, scratch beneath the surface at Arsenal right now and there are several talented youngsters just waiting to come through to be the next big star.

And perhaps the brightest of them all is Amario Cozier-Duberry, the 17-year-old winger who has been in sensational form for Arsenal’s youth teams this season.

Here, NXGN takes a closer look at yet another Hale End sensation…

  • Where it all began

Cozier-Duberry was born in London and grew up as an Arsenal fan. Football was always a big part of his life, whether it be playing for his school side or with his Sunday League team, Chettle Court Rangers FC.

He spent five years with Chettle Court, from Under-11s through to the Under-15s, before being offered a trial by Arsenal.

“I was excited because I supported Arsenal and I could have never thought I’d have the opportunity to play for my boyhood club,” Cozier-Duberry said, while discussing his journey so far with the Arsenal matchday programme.

”However, I was also nervous as I had been on trials at other teams around London and they never took me in.”

But there was no reason for Cozier-Duberry to be nervous. He starred during his 10-week trial, and after scoring a fine goal during a win against Colchester United in the Floodlit Cup, Arsenal told the young forward that they wanted to sign him.

He went on to spend the next two years at Hale End before receiving his scholarship with the U18s and progressing to London Colney.

  • The big break

Cozier-Duberry is still waiting for his competitive senior debut for Arsenal, but he has appeared in the first-team squad three times in recent months.

He travelled with the senior squad for the recent warm weather training camp in Dubai and made a couple of eye-catching cameos as Arteta’s side beat Lyon and AC Milan to win the Dubai Super Cup.

The winger then came off the bench to make his first ever appearance at Emirates Stadium in Arsenal’s final warm-up game ahead of the return of the Premier League in December.

Arteta’s side were beaten 2-0 by Juventus, but Cozier-Duberry immediately caught the eye.

“Making my home debut was a dream come true,” he said. “It’s something only a few ever get to do and to do it against Juventus, a team with a massive history, is a moment I’ll never forget.

“I was so nervous beforehand, my feet were numb, but as I stepped on the pitch, I made a few decent passes which helped.

“Hearing my name through the speaker, the fans cheering, and having my family and friends there who have been so supportive of me, was so wonderful. “

  • How it's going

Aside from dipping his toes into the first-team picture, Cozier-Duberry has been one of the stand out performers this season as Arsenal’s U18s have progressed through to the latter rounds of the FA Youth Cup.

He scored twice during a thrilling 4-2 win against Watford, when Jack Wilshere’s young side fought back from two goals down at half-time to book their spot in the quarter-finals.

And that followed on from the goal Cozier-Duberry scored in the 3-2 success at Newcastle United in the previous round.

This has certainly been a breakthrough season for the 17-year-old, who has featured heavily for the U21s, scoring three goals so far and contributing a further three assists in 13 Premier League 2 appearances.

Add those performances to his heroics in the Youth Cup so far and you can see why Arteta is keen to have the young winger around the first-team set-up.

He was on the bench for Arsenal's Premier League games against Everton and Brentford in February, and while he has yet to actually get on the pitch, his competitive senior debut only feels like a matter of time.

  • Biggest strengths

There’s no doubt that Cozier-Duberry’s biggest strength is his ability to run with the ball at pace. His low centre of gravity makes it very difficult for defenders to get the ball off him, and his touch and technique ensures he is a real threat whenever he is in possession.

His preferred position is on the right-hand side of attack, where he likes to cut inside on his left foot and get shots away, but he can also operate on the opposite flank if needed.

Like many young wingers, he has played at full-back at times, but his strength is clearly in attack, as he has showcased so impressively this season, whether that be with the U18s, U21s or with the first team.
