Utterly wasteful batting left Royal Challengers Bangalore closer to the brink than ever before in IPL 2017. They needed 158 to win the first of five games Virat Kohli said they had to win to make the play-offs. They did not need a scoreline that read 53 for 5 in the 10th over. But that is what they got. That, and a chastening, morale-killing 61-run defeat.Rising Pune Supergiant were not complaining. They finally got to defend a total at home and safeguard their position at fourth place on the points table. So what now for RCB? They can, mathematically, still make the final four, but can a team that fell to 49 all out, a team that will lose AB de Villiers in the coming weeks, a team that tops the charts in run-outs (7), single-digit scores (40) and scoring slowly in the Powerplay (6.64) stop the rot in time? The hitter Rahul Tripathi has shouldered considerable responsibility in his first IPL season. He is expected to take advantage of fielding restrictions in the Powerplay, which by itself is not an unreasonable demand. But the 26-year old has also had to make up for his partner’s struggles. Ajinkya Rahane’s strike-rate of 123 is the lowest among openers with 100 or more runs in this IPL and today he fell early as well, sweeping a full toss to short fine leg.RCB might have thought that gave them the advantage. After all, Tripathi did not even play the 2017 domestic T20 tournament. But on a grander stage, against tougher bowlers, he has now smashed six straight 30-plus scores – an unmatched tally – and specifically in the first six overs, he has 198 runs – another unmatched tally – hitting a boundary every 3.71 balls.A see-saw innings Pune collected 43 runs in the Powerplay, but only 26 in the next five overs, hitting only one four. This was because they had to deal with a dry pitch and a set of RCB players swearing by their slower balls. Another thing that worked for Kohli was his use of Pawan Negi. The left-arm spinner has bowled 120 balls this season – 103 of them have been to right-handers. They have also contributed to seven of his eight wickets, Tripathi the latest to succumb for 37 off 28 balls. Negi finished with 1 for 18, equalling his most economical spell of four overs in IPL history.ESPNcricinfo Ltd
The splutter It seems par for the course for Pune to potter along between the seventh and 14th overs: since they came into being in 2016, their run-rate of 7.55 in this phase has been the slowest among all teams. Only this year, it might actually be their plan, considering Manoj Tiwary’s form, MS Dhoni’s reputation, and the Ben Stokes investment. Against RCB, they had the first two on call but not the third. So Steven Smith smacked Samuel Badree for 6, 4, 4 in the 12th over and Pune had suddenly found 29 runs in two overs.RCB did well to pull things back, taking pace off the ball against Tiwary, and tucking Dhoni up by bowling into his body. In the slog overs, when batsmen are solely thinking boundaries, those were sound plans. The last of the sound plans.RCBusted It began with de Villiers crunching a backfoot drive straight to short cover’s hands. Score, 32 for 2. Then Kedar Jadhav was run-out, as he and Kohli looked for an overthrow when the ball was a few little feet away from the bowler. Score, 44 for 3. Sachin Baby chipped a catch to short midwicket. Score, 47 for 4. Stuart Binny top-edged a hook and was caught at long leg. Score, 48 for 5. Trent Woodhill, the batting coach, was sitting in the dugout, watching in pure horror.Lockie Ferguson, who conceded 44 runs in his only other IPL game, came away with 4-1-7-2 today, including 18 dots, the highest for the season. Now that suggests he was terrifying, but he wasn’t. Then did Smith funk it up with his fields? No. The pitch wasn’t playing tricks either. There was no evidence to suggest every RCB batsman barring Kohli would only manage single-digits.
Romelu Lukaku's stay at Chelsea could be about to get prolonged, with The Sun reporting that should no team offer to sign the player permanently, he may be kept on at Stamford Bridge.
What is the latest on a Romelu Lukaku transfer?
Having spent last season out of the Blues' squad and on loan with Inter Milan, it hasn't looked like there would be a place for him in the side upon his return this summer. There has already been plenty of rumours and murmurings surrounding his future and potential deals this transfer window, although nothing has concretely materialized as of yet.
It's become clear that the striker himself wants to leave Stamford Bridge if he can during the close season, with the player not seemingly prepared to even attempt to play some minutes under new boss Mauricio Pochettino.
It appears he is set on an exit and there are clubs keen to do business. Juventus have been mooted as a potential landing spot for the Belgian, with Chelsea keen to land Dusan Vlahovic and seeing Lukaku as ideal to use in a swap deal. Inter are also eager to bring him back to Serie A and have lined up loan moves for the 30-year-old again.
Are Chelsea selling Romelu Lukaku?
However, according to The Sun, a short-term move might not be good enough. They report that Premier League side Chelsea are unprepared to let Lukaku leave on a loan deal again and only want to shift him out of the club on a permanent basis this summer
It means that Inter would need to stump up the cash to make a long-term move happen – cash that they likely do not have. The alternative is that the Belgium international stays with the Blues, with the club's hierarchy unwilling to compromise over their stance on a loan move for the striker.
If Inter did bring Lukaku back to the club – and decided to stump up the cash to do so – then they would undoubtedly be getting a player that could help them climb the table in Serie A.
Football journalist Josh Bunting stated that the attacker is a "dream of a striker" to have in Italy and added that he "works perfectly" despite his struggles in London.
He is clearly an asset in the top tier of Italian football then, as Inter will already know, but it appears that they may have to be willing to pay big if they want to see him back at San Siro next season.
Liverpool look like they are increasingly keen to get a deal done for Romeo Lavia this summer, with reports suggesting that the midfielder is the centre of their attention in the market currently.
How many games has Romeo Lavia played for Southampton?
The 19-year-old has been with Southampton for just one campaign but has already made his mark in the Premier League for the club. Despite the Saints suffering relegation to the Championship, the midfielder shone and became an established member of the first-team squad despite his age, with journalist Benjy Nurick hailing him as an "absolute monster" back in January.
He featured for the Saints on 29 occasions and even bagged a goal from the centre of the field. Despite it being his first campaign of regular, top-level football, he only missed nine league fixtures all season and adapted with ease.
Prior to joining up with Southampton, he had never played a minute of league action for a club. He was turning out for the Man City reserve squad when he was with the Etihad Stadium outfit and even played in the youth side for the Saints before being given the chance to shine in their first-team squad.
His showings in the Premier League now have led to the Belgian being given his debut for the national side too, with his country calling him up to action back in March. He has yet to add to his one cap, but the teenager looks like he could be a real future star in any team going forward, with Southampton valuing him at £50m.
Are Liverpool signing Romeo Lavia?
Having impressed at the top level, and with Southampton now in the Championship, there is interest from those higher up the pyramid in snapping him up. One club that has been regularly linked is Liverpool, who believe he wants to make the move to Anfield, and now, according to a report from The Daily Mail + via Rousing the Kop, the Reds are ready to prioritise the signing of Lavia this summer.
It adds that the Reds want to try and sign younger players to bring their squad's average age down. The midfielder ticks that box and also has admirers at Anfield, with many at the club now big fans of the Saints youngster and wanting to try and bring him to the side.
romeo-lavia-premier-league-transfers-man-united
He's already viewed as a big talent in the game, with a real future at the very top if some of the praise lathered on him is anything to go by. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig stated that Lavia is "underrated" in terms of his passing ability and that he also sees the Southampton man as a "future midfield leader" for both his country of Belgium and a "top Premier League club."
The opportunity to boss the middle of the field for a high-end side may come sooner rather than later if Liverpool have anything to do with it – and if they did add the 19-year-old, it could be excellent business ahead of next season and the club's third midfield addition after securing moves for Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai this summer.
Gujarat Lions batsman Aaron Finch said that the team’s poor net run rate at this stage of the season provided the motivation for him to complete a swift chase against Royal Challengers Bangalore

‘It was a conscious effort to attack’ – Finch
Royal Challengers Bangalore’s batting in the 2017 IPL has hardly reinforced why they boast three of the five highest totals in IPL history. Out of the eight times they have batted this season, only thrice have they put up a total in excess of 150.On the heels of the lowest-ever IPL total, RCB tumbled to 134 on Thursday night after another underwhelming performance against Gujarat Lions. With no IPL team having ever successfully defended a total of 150 or less in a completed innings at the Chinnaswamy, the best RCB could have done was pick up early wickets and hope Lions went into a shell. They ticked the first box, reducing Lions to 23 for 2 in the fifth over. But any plans of applying the choke thereafter were thwarted by a rampaging Aaron Finch. Finch ran up the fastest half-century by a Lions batsman, off 22 balls, batting with a sense of urgency not necessarily associated with a chase of 135. As a result, Lions stormed home in 13.5 overs and RCB were consigned to another heavy defeat.”Sometimes, in a small run chase, you can make the mistake of trying to bat slowly, and before you know, the run rate is 7, 8, 9 an over,” Finch said. “It was a conscious effort to attack. We were just trying to get ahead of the run rate. So even if something did happen, there were a couple of guys behind myself and Suresh – Jadeja, Faulkner, Dinesh Karthik… if something went wrong, we could still pick up the pieces.”Then, there is the matter of net run rate that can leave teams twitchy when the various permutations come into play towards the end of the league stage. Languishing at the bottom with a NRR of -0.844, Lions have now sprung up two places, and the net run rate is considerably better at -0.360.”At this stage, you still got to keep winning games,” Finch said. “If you’re in a position where you can really accelerate and make sure you finish as quickly as possible, it’s great. We’re lucky we got into a position like that tonight.”Lions’ bowlers used the new ball well on a slightly spicy Chinnaswamy deck that had more pace than in previous games. Nathu Singh and Basil Thampi got the ball to jag around a bit. Andrew Tye’s accuracy then hastened RCB’s slide after the early loss of Virat Kohli. Tye got one to nip away from Chris Gayle to find the left-hander’s outside edge. Next ball, he harried Travis Head by finding extra bounce from the back-of-a-length region, and had him edge to slip.”Anytime you take wickets in the Powerplay, it’s a huge bonus,” Finch said. “That’s just a part of the game that we’ve been missing. When we were down with pressure, we saw some misfields and a couple of catches going down in the past, but today was a pretty polished performance, and we saw some young quicks, Nathu and Basil, really stand up with the new ball against some of the best players to have ever played this format.”Lions threw in an element of surprise when they opted to open with the scratchy Ishan Kishan, who had been left out of their previous game. “We knew that they’d open with Badree, Chahal has been bowling in the Powerplay and Pawan Negi as well. It was a case of having a left-hander at the top,” Finch explained.Finch felt that the pitch exceeded their expectations. RCB’s bowlers didn’t help themselves by repeatedly erring in their lengths to him. While it was the in-between length that probed batsmen, Finch was offered a steady diet of fuller balls that he mowed over the short leg-side boundary, and short ones that were crunched off the backfoot.”In the second innings, it came onto the bat nicely,” Finch said. “Once the brand new ball was gone, there wasn’t much extra bounce. We thought it would be a little bit low and slow, but it played a lot better and turned out to be a pretty good wicket.”Finch was also pleased with the team combination and reassured that Lions hadn’t lost hope yet. “Coming to a place like Bangalore where the ball can travel around, to bring in the experience of James Faulkner was a good move. Obviously, he bowled beautifully.”It was a very good performance from the team tonight. We’ve put ourselves in this position by being poor in a couple of games. We’re still very confident, though. We have a good side, but time will tell.”

After hosting its first game in Pakistan this year, the Pakistan Super League is setting itself much higher targets next season. Najam Sethi, the PSL chairman, revealed plans to host as many as eight matches in Pakistan during its third season next year, with four each to be held in Lahore and Karachi. Sethi also reiterated his commitment to bringing international cricket back to Pakistan.”This time around we are going to hold eight matches in Pakistan,” Sethi told Express Tribune. “Two double-headers will take place in Karachi and two double-headers will take place in Lahore.”Sethi had made the hosting of the PSL final earlier this year in Lahore his central goal this season. The uncertainty over whether that would materialise carried through right to the end. Eventually, the final was held at the Gaddafi stadium amid presidential-style security, and went off without incident. Even so, the entire foreign contingent of one of the finalists – Quetta Gladiators – opted against going to Pakistan, and had to be replaced last minute by players who had originally not been part of the competition.Sethi said that will not happen this time. “All players featuring in the third edition of the PSL will be obliged to play in Pakistan,” he said. “It will be part of their contract that they will be playing here.”Foreign players will receive 50% more than their usual fee for playing in Pakistan as an added incentive, or a 100% increase if they are icon players. “So if a player was getting let’s say $10,000 for that match, then he will be getting $15,000. It is just a way to sweeten the deal for them.” However, he said that Pakistan players were not in line for the same pay increases owing to budget constraints.Security concerns have meant that the final was the only PSL game – in its two-season history – to be held in Pakistan, with the rest of the matches played in the UAE, where Pakistan plays their “home” international fixtures. The country has not played host to any international cricket against Full Members since the Sri Lankan team bus was attacked by terrorists in 2009, with the exception of one tour by Zimbabwe, who played two T20s and three ODIs under a stringent security blanket.Sethi also said that arrangements to induct a sixth franchise were also on track, and as many as 30 national and international parties had expressed an interest in buying the sixth franchise.
As Ange Postecoglou kicked off his Tottenham Hotspur tenure with a pre-season defeat to Premier League rivals West Ham United, it was perhaps clear as to why the Greek-Aussie has been looking to strengthen his defensive unit, in particular, this summer.
While it is often wise not to read too much into these warm-up encounters, the ex-Celtic boss may have still been concerned at seeing his side ship three times against the Hammers in Perth, with David Moyes' men surging into a two-goal lead inside 23 minutes.
Having endured the sixth-worst defensive record in the division last term, the Lilywhites will desperately need to improve next season if they are to have any hope of regaining their place in European competition, hence why a string of centre-back targets have been named.
What are the latest Tottenham transfer rumours?
Much of the speculation at present appears to be surrounding the north London outfit's interest in Bundesliga duo, Edmond Tapsoba and Micky van den Ven, with Daniel Levy and co said to have been engaging in talks with Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg, respectively, regarding the two central defenders.
That German-based pairing are not the only figures whom Tottenham are targetting, however, with The Sun having reported last week that Postecoglou is also showing an interest in Crystal Palace rock, Joachim Andersen, with Levy said to have been tracking the Denmark international since his prior stint on loan at Fulham.
While any deal for the former Lyon ace certainly won't come cheap – with the 27-year-old set to command a fee of £50m – his strong showings at Selhurst Park of late would suggest that he can be the defensive solution that Spurs are craving.
What is Joachim Andersen's style of play?
The 6 foot 4 powerhouse offers the benefit of being able to provide a towering, physical presence at the heart of the defence, while also having the quality to play out from the back when required, with that combination of qualities ensuring that the one-time Sampdoria man could be able to thrive at one of the Premier League's elite clubs.
That was the verdict of pundit Robbie Earle during Andersen's days at Craven Cottage, with the former Wimbledon midfielder discussing the defender's suitability to life at Liverpool:
“Right now, he would be a perfect fit for Liverpool Football Club, by the way. Good size, can play, looks commanding, looks like he can organise, he’s 24 years of age."
Manchester City defender Ruben Dias.
Those at N17 will also be intrigued by Andersen's apparent likeness to Manchester City's treble-winning ace, Ruben Dias, with the pair said to share a number of statistical and stylistic similarities, according to FBref.
That is shown by the two men's desire and willingness to get on the ball, with the Palace gem notably ranking in the top 20% among his European peers for attempted passes, while Dias ranks in the top 1% in that regard.
Equally, the pair are also able to offer a real threat at the other end of the pitch, with Andersen ranking in the top 13% for touches in the attacking penalty area, while his Portuguese counterpart ranks in the top 18% for that same metric.
That likeness can also be seen by their leadership qualities, with Andersen having been named captain during his temporary stint with the Cottagers, while Dias has also taken on the armband at times at the Etihad, having been dubbed a "leader of men" by Sky Sports pundit, Jamie Redknapp.
That comparison to the latter man is of interest such has been the 26-year-old's impact in Manchester over the last three years, with the former Benfica man having been hailed as a "man mountain" by pundit Michael Ball due to his standout showings under Pep Guardiola.
For Spurs to then snap up their own version of the 6 foot 1 titan in the form of Andersen could prove to be just what Postecoglou is searching for.

It has been a considerably busy summer of incomings for Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers since the market officially opened for business last month.
The Light Blues have wasted little time in their attempts to bolster the squad following the bitter disappointment of the 2022/23 campaign.
Michael Beale’s side failed to win a single trophy as they finished second in the Scottish Premiership and were knocked out of all domestic and European cup competitions.
The 42-year-old head coach has reacted to the lack of silverware by swooping for seven new signings; with Sam Lammers, Abdallah Sima, Dujon Sterling, Jack Butland, Kieran Dowell, Cyriel Dessers, and Leon Balogun having joined so far.
Whilst there is still more than a month left to run before the end of the window, the former Aston Villa assistant manager could bolster his squad by dipping into the youth team ahead of next season.
The club’s official Twitter account posted training clips on Monday and one of them showcased B Team star Cole McKinnon's impressive talent. Indeed, he found the net in beautiful fashion as he used the side of his foot to flick the ball past Jack Butland after the cross had gone slightly behind him.
What position does Cole McKinnon play?
Beale could find the long-term heir to Ryan Jack at Ibrox as the 20-year-old prospect is a central midfielder by trade who can also be deployed in a holding or attacking role.
The current Gers first-teamer has spent the majority of his career playing as either a defensive or central midfielder and is now in the final year of his contract in Glasgow.
Rangers central midfielder Ryan Jack.
He turns 32 in February of next year and McKinnon, who turns 21 in 2024, could be the player to take his place for the start of the 2024/25 campaign, provided he can continue to develop over the next 12 months.
The talented youngster enjoyed his first taste of regular senior football during the 2022/23 season as he made 31 competitive appearances on loan at Partick Thistle, in which time the Scottish gem contributed with three goals along with three assists.
These statistics suggest that the Scotland U21 international, who scored on his Scottish Premiership debut against Hearts for Giovanni van Bronckhorst in 2022, has the potential to chip in with goal involvements from midfield.
He could, therefore, replicate the impact that Jack has had as an attacking threat from that position as the veteran ace scored two goals and provided three assists in 36 outings last term.
Former Head of the Academy Craig Mulholland once claimed that McKinnon has an "outstanding desire" to win, which suggests that the exciting dynamo has the mentality to fit in at Rangers as the club attempt to compete for domestic and European trophies over the years to come.
Of course, there is no guarantee that the Light Blues youngster will be able to make the step up to playing regular first-team football for Beale but his development so far suggests that the potential is there.
Another loan next season, possibly at Premiership level, whilst Jack sees out the remaining year of his contract could put him in a position to seriously compete for a place in the squad the following campaign.
