Reliable journalist: Leeds have discussed transfer for Glen Kamara

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke is known to 'appreciate' a Scottish Premiership midfielder and could look to bring him in before the end of the transfer window, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

What's the latest transfer news involving Leeds United?

Leeds United have slowly built their way into the transfer window and so far have wrapped up the additions of Karl Darlow, Ethan Ampadu, Sam Byram and Joe Rodon, as cited by Transfermarkt.

According to journalist Alan Nixon on Patreon, Everton striker Tom Cannon is a target for Leeds United as Farke looks to strengthen his forward line; however, he could cost in the region of £8 million to bring to Elland Road.

In conversation with Football League World, former England international Carlton Palmer has indicated that Leeds United are keen on Swansea City striker Joel Piroe and stated in an interview with the outlet: "Leeds have a genuine interest in Swansea striker Joel Piroe.

"They need to bring a striker in, but Swansea do not want to sell and with interest from other clubs, Swansea are asking for a £20 million price.

Football Insider back up the notion that Leeds United are indeed keen on Piroe, though Southampton and Leicester City are also monitoring the Dutch poacher.

Earlier this month, The Daily Mail revealed that Leeds United were weighing up an offer for out-of-favour Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara, who earns £21,000 per week north of the border, as speculation over the future of USA international Tyler Adams continues to grow in the latter stages of the window.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, transfer guru Romano has detailed that Leeds United boss Farke is known to 'appreciate' Kamara, who is "made of iron", though he doesn't expect negotiations between both parties to be straightforward.

Romano stated: “He's a player they appreciate for sure. This is true. It’s a name they have discussed internally at the club.

“So, let's see in terms of numbers with Rangers because it's never an easy negotiation when you want to sign important players. But it's true they have his name on the list.”

What now for Leeds United?

Leeds United will need to up their game in the Sky Bet Championship after taking just one point from six available in their opening two matches against Cardiff City and Birmingham City, as per Sky Sports.

Cited by The Yorkshire Evening Post, Whites manager Farke has urged calm with regard to their transfer activity in the window's closing stages, stating in a pre-match press conference before his side take on West Bromwich Albion at Elland Road: "It's a bit tricky, but I'm quite confident that we'll have some good solutions and you know the quote 'Save the best for last'. So sometimes it's even a good choice."

Daniel Farke

According to Football Insider, Leeds United, West Brom and Rangers are all vying for the signature of Millwall central defender Jake Cooper, who is in the final year of his contract at the Den and could be available for a cut-price fee.

Football Scotland have revealed that Leeds United sent scouts to watch Aberdeen forward Duk in action against Scottish champions Celtic last weekend.

Wolves must unleash dangerous £30k-p/w Fabio Silva upgrade

Wolverhampton Wanderers are heading into the international break off the back of a defeat after their 3-2 loss to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday.

How did Wolves lose to Palace?

The home side took the lead in the 56th minute after a relatively quiet first half as Tyrick Mitchell's low cross into the front post area was prodded into the back of the net by French centre-forward Odsonne Edouard.

Hwang Hee-chan soon levelled the scores less than ten minutes later as Pedro Neto's corner was diverted into the far corner by the South Korea international.

However, Gary O'Neil's side failed to push on to go and win the match as Palace took control and made it 3-1 by the 84th minute thanks to two superb goals from Eberechi Eze and Edouard, who both found room within the box to slot the ball past Jose Sa.

A 96th-minute consolation goal from Matheus Cunha had no bearing on the match as it came far too late for the away side to mount a comeback in the closing stages.

How did Fabio Silva perform against Palace?

One player who should be in danger of losing their place in the starting line-up is Fabio Silva after his disappointing performance at the top end of the pitch.

Wolves striker Fabio Silva.

The 21-year-old marksman struggled, once again, to prove that he is ready to lead the line and offer a goal threat for Wolves. As a result, he must be ditched from the starting team in favour of Hwang, who has proven he is able to chip in with goals at this level.

Silva played 74 minutes of the game and offered very little in and out of possession. His lack of presence through the middle was evident as he lost four of his six ground duels and his only aerial battles throughout the clash.

The youngster also failed to register a single effort on target and accumulated a woeful 0.04 xG and 0.07 xA, showing that the Portuguese striker did not get into strong goalscoring positions or provide his teammates with opportunities in front of goal.

The former Porto starlet has started three of Wolves' four Premier League matches so far this season and has so far contributed with zero goals and has also failed to create any big chances for teammates.

His lack of strength has been on display throughout the campaign so far as the former PSV loanee has lost 100% of his aerial duels and 55% of his battles in total, whilst he has been unable to make up for that with his play in possession having missed two 'big chances'.

This underwhelming start to the season comes after Silva managed four goals and one assist in 14 Eredivisie matches for PSV last term, in which time he lost 65% of his physical contests and spurned four 'big chances' for the Dutch outfit.

Consequently, O'Neil should drop the talent from the XI after the international break as they host Liverpool at the Molineux. Instead, Hwang should be unleashed from the start.

How good is Hwang Hee-chan?

The £30k-per-week hotshot is far from a prolific number nine but his form at the start of this season suggests that he has the quality to offer considerably more than Silva at the top end of the pitch.

Wolves striker Hee-chan Hwang.

Goals have been hard to come by for Wolves in recent times as they only hit the back of the net 31 times in 38 Premier League matches last term and they have only managed four in four so far during the 2023/24 campaign, with two of those coming from the South Korean.

Hwang has showcased his qualities off the bench with two goals and one 'big chance' created for a teammate in three substitute outings, alongside a start in the only league win so far against Everton.

He has averaged an excellent Sofascore rating of 7.13 for the club with only two players – Jose Sa and Pedro Neto – having averaged higher ratings within the squad. It shows that the former RB Leipzig man has been one of the team's outstanding performers in spite of his limited time on the pitch.

The 27-year-old produced three goals and one assist in 12 top-flight starts during the 2022/23 campaign and five goals alongside one assist in 20 starts throughout the previous term. Again, hardly outstanding but there is untapped potential just waiting to be unleashed.

Over the last 365 days, Hwang ranks in the top 9% of his positional peers throughout Europe's top five leagues for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.41), showing that the talented frontman has been an efficient scorer compared to the minutes he has played against other strikers in Europe.

His superb level of production off the bench in recent weeks suggests that the versatile star, who can play on either flank or through the middle as a centre-forward, is able to offer far more than Silva, both as a scorer and a creator.

Hwang could also be a big upgrade on the young forward when it comes to putting in the hard yards for the team to do his defensive work against the ball.

During the 2022/23 campaign, the South Korean ranked within the top 11% or higher of his Premier League positional peers for tackles (1.59) and blocks (1.43) per 90, whilst he also made 0.40 interceptions per 90, as per FBref.

For context, Silva ranked within the bottom 38% or lower of his Eredivisie positional peers during his loan spell with PSV for tackles (0.44), blocks (0.59), and interceptions (0.15) per 90.

Evidently, the former RB Salzburg man offers far more than the 21-year-old striker out of possession to cut out opposition attacks at source. This is no doubt a valuable trait as it helps to prevent the other team from creating regular chances.

Therefore, O'Neil must unleash Hwang, who was once described as a "dangerous" forward by ex-Arsenal ace Kevin Campbell, from the start after the international break.

He'd certainly improve Wolves' attack to give them the best possible chance of scoring enough goals to pick up the points that they will ultimately need to beat the drop.

Lee Johnson replacement: World Cup hero could arrive at Hibernian

Former Hibernian manager Lee Johnson finally paid the price for leading the team to a poor start to the 2023/24 campaign.

Despite reaching the Europa Conference League playoff round, defeating Swiss side Luzern in the third round, Hibs’ woeful Premiership form was the catalyst.

They have lost their opening three league ties and are currently rooted to the bottom of the table.

The question is, who will be the next person in to lead the team?

Who will be the next Hibs manager?

There will likely be a few candidates lining up to put their name forward for the role, although one name which has cropped up could be a surprising choice.

Current Australia manager Graham Arnold has emerged as a potential heir to Johnson according to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph, who said: “Australia manager Graham Arnold is in the frame for the Hibernian job, as the club draw up a shortlist of candidates for their managerial vacancy.

“It's understood the 60yo is keen to consider the role, but is also attracting interest from two English Championship clubs.”

The two other sides haven’t been named but unless the board show greater ambition, Hibs will be the underdogs in a potential move for the 60-year-old, especially considering their chances – barring a miracle – of securing European football until Christmas.

Could Graham Arnold improve Hibs?

Johnson spent 15 months in charge of the Easter Road outfit, winning just 20 of his 54 matches in charge and securing just 1.31 points per game.

Hardly the most eye-catching statistics and the poor start just created the need for change. Arnold will bring a wealth of experience to the role should he be appointed, having managed not only the Australian national side but also Central Coast Mariners and Sydney FC, averaging 1.71 and 1.90 points per game across both clubs respectively.

He has won two league titles and an Australian Cup during his managerial career also and would bring a winning mentality to Hibs, something that they badly need considering they have won just two major honours this century.

Graham Arnold

Arnold is perhaps best known for his spell in charge of the Wallabies and in particular, impressing at the 2022 World Cup.

During that tournament, they became the first Australian men’s side to win two matches at the FIFA World Cup as they secured progression to the last 16 for the first time since 2006.

Eventual winners Argentina proved to be a game too far, yet they gave their all and scored in every single match.

Reporter Vince Rugari praised Arnold recently while discussing the Matilda’s head coach Tony Gustavsson during their own chase for glory, saying: “Worth pointing out, as I did in the below, that it's not all over. Graham Arnold was facing similar criticism with the Socceroos in WCQ – but he pulled it out of the fire. His decisions against Peru and beyond were perfect. Gustavsson has the chance to do the same against Canada.”

It would be an interesting move for Hibs, yet with Celtic enjoying vast success with Australian coach Ange Postecoglou, it could work out well indeed.

Wolves Readying Second Harrison Reed Bid

When it comes to pre-season preparations, to say that Wolverhampton Wanderers have had a summer to forget would be an incredible understatement.

For the majority of pre-season, the Midlands club were under the guidance of Julen Lopetegui. With the Premier League season on the horizon, however, the Spaniard and the club parted ways, resulting in Gary O'Neil's arrival.

If things couldn't get any worse from there, having lost Ruben Neves at the end of last season, Manchester City then came in for Matheu Nunes in a move that looks set to be successful.

Left searching for a replacement, Wolves are reportedly set to make a second approach for a Premier League midfielder.

What's the latest Wolves transfer news?

After bidding farewell to the likes of Neves and Raul Jimenez, Wolves have welcomed five reinforcements, with one of those being a permanent deal for Matheus Cunha. To their credit, too, the Midlands club haven't got off to the worst of starts, winning once in their opening three Premier League games and deserving a result at Old Trafford.

Reportedly set to lose Nunes, however, Wolves could yet endure a busy end to the summer transfer window, which could include the arrival of Harrison Reed.

According to The Evening Standard's Nizaar Kinsella, after seeing their first bid for the midfielder rejected by Fulham, Wolves are set to return with a new offer before the deadline.

Reed remains an important part of Marco Silva's side, however, featuring in every game so far this season. And, with that said, it remains to be seen just how much the Cottagers will demand for their midfielder, who earns a reported £41k per-week.

Should Wolves sign Harrison Reed?

Replacing Nunes with Reed would be surprising business for Wolves, but that's not to say it wouldn't be smart. The Fulham man can play in both defensive midfield and in a slightly more advanced role.

With that said, Reed may even be an upgrade on Nunes, especially when you consider the fact that he outperformed the Portuguese midfielder in the Premier League last season, as per FBref.

The number of blocks that Reed made last season was particularly impressive, and is an ability that Wolves could really benefit from, given their position as a side who will find themselves sitting slightly deeper than others against certain teams.

Silva is certainly a fan of the Englishman, though, potentially making the deal a difficult one. The Fulham manager previously heaped praise on Reed, saying, via The Athletic, after his side defeated Swansea City a couple years ago: “I congratulated him straight away, because he had a very good game. I think it was his first 90 minutes this season. I congratulated him on the way he played 90 minutes.

"He’s playing in a different position and he is adapting really well. I know he can be very good in the No 6 position, but he can play a little bit higher up the pitch with his mobility as well.”

Man United considering move to sign "top-drawer" free agent

Manchester United are now considering a shock move for Dutch winger Anwar El Ghazi, amid growing uncertainty over the future of a first-team player…

Is Jadon Sancho leaving Man United?

Jadon Sancho's Man United career could be over, with The Daily Star reporting his relationship with Erik ten Hag has broken down completely, after the winger recently took to social media to deny the claims he has a poor attitude on the training ground.

The duo are struggling to settle their differences, despite engaging in recent talks over the Englishman's future at Old Trafford, as there is a lack of trust in the fractured relationship, meaning he is now expected to be one of the players sold in January.

Sancho is expected to secure a loan deal elsewhere in the winter market, with a view to making a permanent exit next summer, bringing to an end what has been a disastrous spell since arriving from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of £75m in 2021.

In the same article, it is detailed that Antony is currently absent, due to allegations of domestic abuse, meaning United are a little short on options in wide areas, and there has now been an indication they could make a move for a former Premier League winger.

According to a report from The Daily Mail, Man United are now considering a shock move for El Ghazi, amid the uncertainty over Sancho and Antony, and the ex-Aston Villa man would be available on a free transfer, having recently left PSV Eindhoven.

The 28-year-old left the Dutch side by mutual consent last week, potentially paving the way for a move to Old Trafford, however, the Red Devils are not the only club in the race for his signature, with offers from Saudi Arabia also believed to be on the table.

With Antony set to be absent for the foreseeable future, and Sancho's future in major doubt, after a loan move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq fell through last week, the former PSV Eindhoven man could be a viable option for Ten Hag's side.

However, since then, Red Devils reporter Laurie Whitwell has said:

"MUFC not interested in Anwar El Ghazi, after proposal by agents. Right-wing options affected by Antony’s withdrawal + Sancho’s situation, but Pellistri was kept with a view to featuring, plus Garnacho could play there. Fernandes/Mount too, if necessary."

How good is Anwar El Ghazi?

Although it is a little surprising Man United are being linked with a player who PSV were happy to get rid of recently, there are some indications the Dutchman could be a good signing, particularly considering he has experience in the Premier League.

During his spell with Aston Villa, the Netherlands international scored a very impressive ten goals in 28 games in the 2020-21 season, and he was hailed by journalist Ashley Preece before he departed the West Midlands club:

"Capable of a worldie & brilliant at high-pressure penalties! For a little over £8million, El Ghazi has been a top-drawer value-for-money signing."

Even last season, El Ghazi managed to put in some solid displays for PSV, scoring eight goals in 23 Eredivisie games, indicating that he could be a decent enough short-term option for Man United.

It will be very difficult to find a suitable replacement for Sancho outside the transfer window, but it is important Ten Hag brings in a younger option in January, as he is sparse on options in wide areas, making this one to watch.

'Two or three IPLs left in me' – Yuvraj

The 36-year-old batsman has said he is still enjoying his cricket, and that he is still driven by the desire to play for India

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Feb-2018

AFP

Playing for India still remains a motivation for Yuvraj Singh, who has also insisted he has “two or three IPLs” left in him. Yuvraj, 36, also said he could have had a successful Test career and played around 80 matches had it not been for a combination of factors, including a rare form of germ-cell tumour that kept him out of the game for nearly a year. Yuvraj, though, doesn’t want to leave the game with any regrets, “thinking I should have played for some more years.”Yuvraj came back into India’s ODI side in January 2017, after a gap of more than three years, and played 11 matches – including all of India’s matches during the Champions Trophy in England in June – before being left out again after an ODI series in the West Indies. The selectors didn’t pick him for any of the squads for the Duleep Trophy in September, which sent a signal that his international career could be over. Still, Yuvraj hasn’t given up on another India comeback. For now, he has the IPL to look forward to, with his “home” franchise Kings XI Punjab, who signed him for USD 312,000 in January’s player auction.”I want to go when I feel it is the right time to go, when I feel I have done my best and I could not have done any more than this,” Yuvraj told . “I am still playing because I am enjoying playing cricket, not just because I have to play for India or I have to play the IPL. The motivation is definitely to play for India. I feel two or three IPLs are left in me.””I have been a fighter, taking on tough situations. I like being a pillar of strength to people, for those suffering from cancer or going through other issues in life. I want to be known as someone who never gave up. Whether I play for India or not, I will give my 100 percent on the field. Cancer [YouWeCan Foundation] is going to be my area of work in the future. I love supporting young kids, I like interacting with the younger generation. Coaching is in my mind. I would identify underprivileged kids and focus on their sport and education.”Yuvraj said he had always been keen on playing more Test cricket given how his success in the longer format invariably rubbed off on his ODI and T20I performances. “When I was growing up, I played a lot of two-day and three-day cricket,” he said. “I also looked forward to playing more and more Test matches, because I always felt that every time I did well in Test cricket, one-day cricket and (later) T20 cricket looked easier. That was the reason I wanted to play more Test matches. But the competition was so high.”I was always trying to find a slot in competition with Sourav [Ganguly] and [VVS] Laxman. I opened the innings in one Test against Australia in Chennai in 2004. I got out early in the first innings [for 8], and then in the second innings I was batting on 7 when the game was rained off. So that opportunity too was wasted. Later I was brought into the middle-order. I eventually won a slot only when Sourav retired. And then, unfortunately, I was diagnosed as suffering from cancer at the peak of my career. I was 29. Had I continued I would have played 80 Test matches or more. But I really have no regrets.”Since his last international appearance, Yuvraj hasn’t played for Punjab consistently in domestic tournaments this season, turning up for only game in the Ranji Trophy. He has had a middling run in both the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament as well as the Vijay Hazare Trophy 50-overs tournament, where he is leading the side. While admitting that motivational levels could drop while playing in front of empty stadiums in domestic cricket, he said in the same breath that motivation had to come from within.”For someone like me, motivation comes from within and not necessarily from the spectators. I am discovering this because I have had to start my cricket again, literally from scratch; I am going through the grind of domestic cricket,” he said. “You do like the applause from the galleries but the motivation has to come from within. Let me also tell you that it is not always easy playing in front of some of the spectators we encounter at different venues. I was able to make a comeback only because I did not miss the chance to play domestic cricket.”In recent times, Yuvraj has been intent on achieving peak fitness. He even recently cleared the yo-yo test, the current benchmark that India’s selectors and team management have set for a player’s fitness. Yuvraj felt the emphasis on fitness was an extension of captain Virat Kohli’s own rigorous work ethic.”Obviously, he’s very different from MSD [MS Dhoni], who is calm and composed. Virat is a bit aggressive. The results have shown that he is doing very well as captain,” Yuvraj said. “It’s a different generation too. MSD had very experienced players, match-winners. It was a very set team when he got the captaincy. The team has transformed under Virat. Being so fit himself, he emphasises on fitness. The players now are much fitter than the previous generation because the game too has become more demanding. Virat is taking the team in the right direction with his fitness and diet discipline, keeping in mind the 2019 World Cup.”

Liverpool: "Modern Midfielder" Emerges As Surprise Transfer Target

Liverpool's struggles in midfield are no secret, after they failed in their pursuit of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, before both ended up signing for Chelsea, forcing the Reds to settle for Wataru Endo.

Jurgen Klopp could yet add another option in the middle of the park, with plenty of names mentioned in the final days of the summer transfer window, including Manchester City's Kalvin Phillips.

What's the latest on Kalvin Phillips to Liverpool?

Alongside the likes of Ryan Gravenberch, Sofyan Amrabat, and Andre, Phillips has emerged as a potential option for Liverpool this summer, as confirmed on Sky Sports by Michael Bridge.

Bridge said: "Like Manchester United, they like Sofyan Amrabat, Fluminese's Andre has been mentioned, Ryan Gravenberch from Bayern Munich has been mentioned, he's been considered. Kalvin Phillips is another player mentioned, although we're not sure if Manchester City would sell to a rival, not necessarily a title rival, but that's become a little bit of a rivalry over the years, hasn't it? Manchester City and Liverpool.

"So, yes, they do want another midfielder, certainly one to watch."

Failing to hide his surprise at Phillips' name being mentioned regarding Liverpool's pursuit of a midfielder, Sky Sports presenter Mike Wedderburn said: "Wow, nine days to go, and Kalvin Phillips being linked with Liverpool. Interesting."

Should Liverpool sign Kalvin Phillips?

kalvin-phillips-man-city-premier-league-transfer-aston-villa

There's no doubt that Phillips could do with a move away from Manchester City, given that he featured just 21 times last season and is yet to feature at all so far in the current campaign. But, whether the Premier League champions would be willing to sell their midfielder to Liverpool for a suitable fee remains to be seen.

From the Reds' perspective, too, they've just welcomed 30-year-old Wataru Endo, so they may be unwilling to welcome Phillips, who is 27 and coming into the season on the back of missing 18 games through injury in the previous campaign.

At his best, the England international could prove to be a solid option for many sides, and has earned praise reflecting that, including from Fabio Capello, who called him the "best modern midfielder I've seen".

He continued, via The Daily Mail: "Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice are two phenomenal players, very different from Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, who I coached: they are very functional in this England, they are two great midfielders who fight on every action.

"If England never concede a goal, they owe it to these two extraordinary guys, who even run into the locker room after every game! They are the secret of this great England. If the defense is iron, it is thanks to them because they protect their comrades."

Statistically speaking, too, when Phillips was at his best and earning plenty of game-time at Leeds, he outperformed the options that were at Klopp's disposal last season.

According to FBref, in the 2021/22 campaign, the 27-year-old made more interceptions, clearances, blocks, and won more tackles per 90 than the amount that Jordan Henderson managed to complete last season at Liverpool.

Whilst there are some positives, though, it remains to be seen whether the Reds will push on and pursue Phillips' signature before the window comes to a close.
