واختتم: “سيحسم ميكالي طريقة لعب الفراعنة في وديتي أوكرانيا والعراق”.

ESPN pundit says ignored Spurs ace has been "more impressive" than Maddison

Tottenham Hotspur have been told that one star of theirs has been "more impressive" than James Maddison, but "nobody paid attention" to him.

Spurs form under Ange Postecoglou

The north Londoners are enjoying somewhat of a fairytale beginning to the Premier League season, with popular Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou making the finest start to a campaign of any new manager in recent English football history. The Lilywhites have won seven out of their opening nine top flight matches, remaining unbeaten over a run which has seriously surprised on-lookers.

Speaking to Premier League productions earlier this month, pundit Ian Wright hailed praise for Postecoglou and his start to life at Spurs; candidly admitting he is shocked by how good the tactician really is.

“It’s underrated,” said Wright. “It’s an underrated effort he is doing, at the minute. Major Ange Postecoglou fans. I remember people saying at the start that ‘he needs to start well’. With the players he has got, you want them to do well and win some games and stuff. But I didn’t expect it to be in the grove it is now and so quickly.

“Not just physically, but mentally as well. They know what they are doing – we are looking at a team that we know that will improve simply because Bentancur is to come back."

The Australian has a few star players to thank for his new-found popularity in north London, with summer signing Maddison proving to be nearly unstoppable at times. Maddison signed for Spurs from Leicester City for around £40 million in the summer, which is proving to be more and more of a bargain as the weeks go by. The England international has racked up three goals and five assists in the league alone so far, most recently helping Tottenham to a 2-0 win over Fulham on Monday.

He's now gearing up for a clash against Crystal Palace tomorrow, where Tottenham are surely favourites to clinch all three points and maintain their very impressive start to the campaign.

Guglielmo Vicario "even more impressive" than Maddison

However, despite Maddison's truly electric start, one pundit believes goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has actually been "even more impressive" with his stellar contribution between the sticks. Indeed, speaking to ESPN, Janusz Michallik has claimed that "nobody paid attention" to Vicario who is now really pulling up trees at Spurs.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

“It’s easy to point at James Maddison, all the goals and how they’re scoring in so many different ways. But defensively what he’s done is even more impressive. They’re the second-best defensive team, look at Vicario, Google probably went down when Vicario came to London because nobody paid attention to who he was, but, today, we’re talking about Sanchez, Onana and Raya, here you have Vicario who is excellent,” Michallik said.

Signed from Empoli to replace Hugo Lloris, the Italy international has made some pretty important saves in big moments, with Fabrizio Romano recently revealing Spurs are "very happy" with Vicario.

"Tottenham are very happy with Guglielmo Vicario and his impact with English football. Understand real fee invested by Spurs to sign Vicario from Empoli was €19m. Top signing."

Standalone WBBL final to lead into day-night Test

It is set be a lunch-time fixture leading into the third day of the January day-night men’s Test between Australia and Sri Lanka in Brisbane

A first standalone final in the history of the burgeoning Women’s Big Bash League, hosted by the top-ranked team, is set to be scheduled as a lunch-time fixture leading into the third day of the January day-night men’s Test between Australia and Sri Lanka in Brisbane. With the tournament to have 23 matches jointly broadcast on the Seven and Fox Sports networks – up from 12 on the Ten network in 2017-18 – the timing of the final and two semi-finals at the back end of a crowded summer will require more balance and compromise, even as Cricket Australia tracks towards the WBBL standing on fully self-contained ground from October 2019 onwards.Number of televised matches by club*

Seven, with coverage helmed by the head of cricket Dave Barham, is committed to showing the tournament final, forcing its scheduling before the start of play on Australia Day, January 26, at the Gabba if the decider is hosted by one of the seven eastern states teams. Should the Perth Scorchers earn the right to host the decider, then some consideration may be given to an evening start time in Western Australia, following the conclusion of play in Brisbane about 9pm Eastern Daylight time.At a crowded time of the summer sporting calendar, the Saturday final would take place up against the women’s singles final of the Australian Open, set to be broadcast by Nine after the network lost the right to international cricket in Australia for the first time in 40 years. Kim McConnie, CA’s head of the WBBL, said the move to standalone semis and final was a further step in the tournament’s evolution.”For the first time ever we are moving the WBBL finals to standalone fixtures separate to the men’s competition, in a move that is sure to please players, clubs and the fans,” McConnie said. “Both semi finals will be played on Saturday, 19 January, at the same location, hosted by the top-ranked team of the regular season, while the final will be played on Australia Day. Giving the WBBL its own window for finals is an important step for the League as we look ahead to a standalone fixture in the 2019-20 season.”Our new landmark partnership with Fox Sports and Seven West Media has enabled us to almost double the number of broadcast matches to 23, which will help us on our journey to be the leading sport for women and girls in Australia.”We know there is a demand for women’s cricket, with more people than ever before tuning in to watch the sport, so the strong relationship we are forming with our new broadcaster partners will continue to reinforce the WBBL position as a competition that inspires young girls to understand that cricket is a game for girls too, and that they can make a career from the sport – not just at the top level.”In keeping with the theme of expansion, the tournament will begin with three successive carnival weekends. The first will feature four matches over two days at the refurbished Junction Oval in Melbourne on the first weekend of December, the second will include eight matches over two days, including four at North Sydney Oval and two in Burnie in Tasmania, and the third will include four games at Bellerive Oval in Hobart.Competing players and teams had been unhappy in the past with the staging of the semis and the final as curtain raisers to the men’s playoffs. In 2018, for instance, this meant that the first-ranked Sydney Sixers and second-placed Sydney Thunder were compelled to play their semi-finals matches at the home grounds of the fourth and third Adelaide Strikers and Perth Scorchers.Elyse Villani, the Scorchers captain, stated ahead of the final in Adelaide that she believed change to a standalone arrangement was due. “I definitely do, heading towards the T20 World Cup in 2020, that’s a standalone competition,” Villani said. “So I think that’s a move Cricket Australia will make pretty soon and we’re definitely ready for it and looking forward to the challenge of continuing to create our own brand.”

Liverpool fans won't like this! PGMOL chief Howard Webb says VAR was 'right' not to intervene in Jeremy Doku penalty controversy in Manchester City draw

PGMOL chief Howard Webb has defended VAR for not intervening in a controversial moment during Liverpool's recent draw with Manchester City.

Howard Webb explains VAR processLiverpool denied late penalty vs Man CityDoku challenge on Mac Allister ruled fairWHAT HAPPENED?

Appearing on the latest ediiton of , Webb said that it was right for VAR not to intervene and overturn Michael Oliver's decision not to award a penalty for Jeremy Doku's challenge on Alexis Mac Allister near the end of the 1-1 draw at Anfield on March 10. The retired official turned boss of the refereeing body, insisted there wasn't enough of an error to get involved, which also would have been the case had the opposite happened and the penalty been given by the on-field ref.

AdvertisementGETTYWHAT WEBB SAID

Webb said: "It's one of those…if the referee gives it on the field, it would have been a 'check complete' by the VAR. Equally, having not given it, it's also 'check complete'. You hear Michael Oliver say the ball is in between two players going together. The ball is too low to head. Doku lifts his foot to play the ball, and he does make contact on the ball. And yes, we know there's some contact on Mac Allister as well. Mac Allister comes into him. Mac Allister is not really playing the ball either. So, I understand why it's split opinion.

"The VAR stays out of it. I think that is what we would we would expect. The VAR looks at it and doesn't see a 'clear and obvious' situation. You see something that's pretty subjective and therefore stays out of it, and the feedback we've had from people within the game is that this is a pretty subjective situation. It's split opinion. So on that basis, the VAR, working to that high threshold kind of followed the right course in not getting involved."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mac Allister had already converted from the spot early in the second half when Darwin Nunez was brought down by Ederson, cancelling out John Stones' first half goal. But the Argentine told afterwards that he felt he was denied a "clear penalty" when he was struck in the chest by Doku's boot. "I think the ref did a very good job throughout the game, but I think he made a mistake in the last decision," Mac Allister added.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

As part of an investigation into claims of corruption and money laundering, police have raided the apartment of the Spanish Football Federation's previous president and arrested at least six persons. Rubiales, who made international headlines for his uninvited kiss after Spain won the Women's World Cup and defiant refusal to stand down, was not one of those detained on Wednesday, Spanish police confirmed to the Associated Press. Rubiales was one of five other persons who were formally placed under investigation, according to a source with knowledge of the operation.

  • WHAT RUBIALES SAID

Speaking to the media, Rubiales said [via AS]: "I am absolutely surprised by all of this. I have been working here for months, in the Dominican Republic. I've been doing it for more than a month straight. And in fact, my family was going to spend Easter with me."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The raids were connected to an inquiry that was started in 2022 into Rubiales's choice to change the Spanish Super Cup's format and relocate it to Saudi Arabia as part of an agreement that reportedly cost the federation €240 million (£205m/$260) over six years.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR RUBIALES?

The operation on Wednesday, according to Spanish authorities, was a component of a larger probe into claims of money laundering, inappropriate asset management, and corporate misconduct.

Rubiales resigned in September, three weeks after he brought Jenni Hermoso towards him and kissed her on the lips during the medal ceremony at the World Cup in Sydney. The top criminal court in Spain is looking into allegations of coercion and sexual abuse against Rubiales. Rubiales has refuted any misconduct.

Ashton Turner's 70* guides Western Australia home

Earlier, Andrew Tye and Cameron Green picked up three wickets each to bowl New South Wales out for 204

Daniel Brettig18-Sep-2018Ashton Turner bunts one away en route to his rapid fifty•Paul Kane/Getty ImagesWestern Australia captain Ashton Turner guided his side home to an opening win in the domestic limited-overs tournament, after a disciplined bowling display restricted New South Wales at the WACA Ground. The Blues, who lost their captain Peter Nevill for the entire competition due to a broken thumb on match eve, had the benefit of winning the toss, but could never get momentum going against the Warriors.Joel Paris struck a key early blow to dismiss Ryan Gibson with the new, swinging ball, before Jhye Richardson broke a key middle-order partnership between Nick Larkin and Jack Edwards, and then followed up with a swift away swinger to dismiss the still jet-lagged Jay Lenton.Daniel Sams then defied his inability to win a state contract by husbanding the resources of the lower order to take NSW beyond 200, despite their dismissal with plenty of their allotment remaining. On a pitch with some assistance for the seamers, early WA wickets were likely. This was borne out by the early exits of Josh Inglis and the injury replacement Sam Whiteman at the expense of well-directed deliveries from Sams. Josh Phillipe and the sometime Test-allrounder Hilton Cartwright steadied the innings before their wickets gave the Blues a chance. However, Turner and Ashton Agar, a curious selection for the Australian team to go to the UAE to face Pakistan, established a match-sealing partnership to make the game safe. Turner stayed at the crease to ensure the win, with Cameron Green at his side.

Blow for Reynolds and McElhenney: Injury news emerges on big Wrexham earner

Back in League Two, Wrexham have shaken off the rust to get off to a blistering start. The Welsh side sit as high as third, level on points with fellow newly-promoted side Notts County and five points adrift of table-toppers Stockport.

If their form remains impressive throughout the season, too, instant promotion will become more of a reality than an unlikely dream, as Wrexham's Hollywood story alongside Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney continues to provide drama. That said, it's not all good news for Phil Parkinson, who is set to be without one of his star men after recent injury news emerged. Now, the League Two side must find a solution to keep their promotion hopes alive.

Wrexham injury news

When it comes to injuries this season, Wrexham received the most frustrating news before the campaign even got underway when Paul Mullin was ruled out for the first six League Two games. Without their star striker, The Red Dragons won just two games, drew twice and lost once in a chaotic opening period. If ever Mullin's importance to Wrexham was doubted, those concerns have been put to rest ever since his return. Parkinson's side have lost just once in their last ten games after the return of their forward.

In Mullin's absence, former Premier League striker Steven Fletcher arrived to spark dreams of a potential strike partnership, only for Wrexham to suffer another injury blow. Parkinson confirmed that Fletcher will undergo knee surgery which could keep him out until 2024. The Wrexham boss said via Goal: "Steven has had a problem with his knee and the specialist has decided he needs an operation. He just hyper-extended it after being here three or four weeks and has been trying to get on with it but unfortunately it has got to the point where he can't carry on any longer so he is having surgery. We won't know the extent of the time he is going to be out until the surgeon has performed the operation."

"Fantastic" Steven Fletcher potentially sidelined until 2024

Former Stoke striker Steven Fletcher.

It's some blow for Wrexham, given how rare it is for a League Two club to have a player with such experience at their disposal. The former Stoke City man could have really kicked on for The Red Dragons, forming a partnership with Mullin in the process. Fletcher's wages, which place him third in Wrexham's list of highest earners, mean that Reynold and McElhenney will be even more frustrated by the injury. Having scored twice in ten games, the 36-year-old may have been hoping to have a greater impact in the coming weeks, before being sidelined.

In a long career, Fletcher has received plenty of praise, including from former Stoke City assistant manager Dean Holden, who said via Stoke on Trent Live: "He’s given everything over two seasons. Last season was difficult with Covid and the second season was like a second debut for some players. It’s been a bit stop-start with injuries but he’s a player who’s had a fantastic career and he’s fantastic behind the scenes working with the younger players.

"I saw him talking to Emre Tezgel before the (Coventry) game and they are the personalities the gaffer has brought to the club who are really important.”

Tottenham secure major off-field deal for key figure; will start next week

Tottenham Hotspur now have an agreement in place regarding an important off-field deal, with the key figure in question now set to start work next week at the Lilywhites, according to reports.

Tottenham Hotspur under Ange Postecoglou

Since arriving in north London from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic in the summer, Ange Postecoglou has been a revelation at the helm and has galvanised a side that looks capable of challenging for the Premier League title in 2023/24.

So far, Spurs have taken 26 points from their opening ten fixtures in the division, playing a style of football that has given supporters real cause for optimism following a damp squib of a campaign in 2022/23.

Nevertheless, former boss Harry Redknapp has claimed that Tottenham aren't a genuine contender to win their first top-flight title since 1961, citing the departure of Harry Kane as a reason why his old club may not be able to go the distance this term.

Speaking to The Daily Express, the 76-year-old stated: "Can Tottenham win the Premier League? No, but they will finish in the top four. People say they are better without Harry Kane, but that’s rubbish. Nobody is better without Harry Kane. He’s the best centre-forward in the world. If he was still at Spurs, he would have scored 12 goals already – and had another half dozen or so assists as well. If they had brought James Maddison in, and Micky van de Ven, and kept Kane – then they would have a team which could win the league."

Despite varying opinions on whether Spurs can genuinely challenge the likes of Manchester City for Premier League glory, it is clear that things are on the up in N17 – and nothing would crystalise that statement more for Tottenham than defeating London rivals Chelsea at home on Monday night.

Nevertheless, Postecoglou is tempering expectations among his Tottenham squad by adopting a game-by-game approach, as he stated ahead of the Chelsea clash via BBC Sport: "We know there's another challenge on Monday night. Looking beyond that doesn't really serve any purpose. The supporters – by all means, this is their football club and they've got to enjoy their football club if things are going well and it provides them with some hopes, dreams and aspirations."

Now, it looks as if Spurs are also taking steps to maximise their potential for success by making an appointment behind the scenes at Hotspur Way.

Tottenham Hotspur reach full agreement with Rob Mackenzie

As per Football Insider, Rob Mackenzie will begin his role as head of recruitment at Tottenham next week after reaching a full agreement to join the club from Aston Villa.

The report states that Mackenzie has now handed in his notice to Aston Villa and is free to return to Spurs, where he spent 18 months working alongside Paul Mitchell between 2015 and 2016.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.

38-year-old Mackenzie has also previously held various positions at OH Leuven, Derby County and Leicester City before going on to work as a chief scout and video analyst at Aston Villa.

Looking ahead, Spurs fans will hope he can help to continue their positive momentum by identifying some gems in the transfer market across future windows.
