Leicestershire romp home after Derbyshire's batting crumbles

Leicestershire put themselves firmly in the chase for the Vitality Blast quarter finals when they thrashed Derbyshire by 55 runs at Derby. The unpredictable North Group sprung another surprise when the Falcons collapsed dramatically chasing what looked a modest target of 150.The Foxes had been held to 149 for 7 with Mark Cosgrove’s 38 the top score as Matt Critchley claimed 2 for 25 in four overs of legspin. But the Falcons pressed the self-destruct button, slumping to 28 for 6, and were bowled out for 94 with Colin Ackermann taking 3 for 9 and Gavin Griffiths 3 for 14.There were signs of what was to come when, after starting steadily, the Foxes began to unravel once they tried to accelerate on a used pitch with three wickets falling in five overs.Harry Swindells failed to clear mid-off when he tried to hit Ravi Rampaul over the top and although Arron Lilley swung Logan van Beek for six over long-on, only 43 runs came from the powerplay.Cosgrove drove Alex Hughes for consecutive fours but Lilley sliced a cut at Luis Reece to point and Cosgrove’s attempt to disrupt Critchley’s line only ended in the hands of deep mid-wicket.Harry Dearden lifted Hughes over deep square for six but then drove to long off and when Ackermann was well caught by Reece diving forward at backward square in the 15th over, the Foxes had slipped to 106 for 5.The Falcons bowled with discipline on a pitch where the ball was not coming on and, backed up by smart fielding, did not allow the Foxes to break free and only 72 came from the last 10 overs.Aadil Ali drove Hughes for six and Callum Parkinson hit the last two balls of the innings from Rampaul for four but the Foxes total seemed below par until the Falcons top order disintegrated in the powerplay.Luis Reece sliced to point after pulling a ball into his helmet and although Wayne Madsen swung a free hit from Dieter Klein for six, he top-edged a reverse sweep at Ackermann and was caught at short third man.It got even worse for the home side in the third over as Billy Godleman sliced Griffiths to third man and Leus du Plooy pulled the next ball into the hands of deep square leg.Former Fox Darren Stevens was run out by Ackermann’s direct hit from cover when he failed to ground his bat and when Hughes swung another short ball to deep mid-wicket, the Falcons were in free-fall.Fynn Hudson-Prentice drove Parkinson for six but the former Derbyshire spinner responded by yorking Matt Critchley and the only consolation for the Falcons was they passed their previous lowest T20 score of 72, against the Foxes six years ago.

Umpires made 'error of judgement' with overthrows – Taufel

The former umpire said only five runs should have been rewarded to England for the overthrow that hit Ben Stokes’ bat and ran to the boundary

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Jul-2019The umpires made an “error of judgement” in awarding six runs, instead of five, to England for the overthrow that hit Ben Stokes’ bat and ran to the boundary, says Simon Taufel, confirming the story that ESPNcricinfo broke right after the World Cup 2019 final. Currently part of the MCC’s laws sub-committee that makes the rules governing cricket, Taufel told and Sydney Morning Herald that England should have been awarded five runs, not six.”It’s a clear mistake.. it’s an error of judgment,” Taufel said. “They (England) should have been awarded five runs, not six.”The judgment error was the timing of when the fielder threw the ball. The act of the overthrow starts when the fielder releases the ball. That’s the act. It becomes an overthrow from the instant of the throw.”Law 19.8, pertaining to “Overthrow or wilful act of fielder”, says: “If the boundary results from an overthrow or from the wilful act of a fielder, the runs scored shall be any runs for penalties awarded to either side, and the allowance for the boundary, and the runs completed by the batsmen, together with the run in progress if they had already crossed at the instant of the throw or act.”A review of the footage of the incident – which took place off the fourth ball of the last over – shows clearly that, at the moment the ball was released by the New Zealand fielder, Martin Guptill, Stokes and his partner, Adil Rashid, had not yet crossed for their second run.ALSO READ: Should England have got five, and not six, for overthrows?Taufel also said that Stokes and Rashid should have switched ends once the run was found to be incomplete – which meant Rashid would have played the fifth ball with three runs required to win. “They did not cross on their second run, at the instant of the throw. So given that scenario, five runs should have been the correct allocation of runs, and Ben Stokes should have been at the non-striker’s end for the next delivery.”Taufel defended the officials though, saying the moment involved many things happening at the same time. “In the heat of what was going on, they thought there was a good chance the batsmen had crossed at the instant of the throw,” Taufel said.”Obviously TV replays showed otherwise. The difficulty you (umpires) have here is you’ve got to watch batsmen completing runs, then change focus and watch for the ball being picked up, and watch for the release (of the throw),” he said.”You also have to watch where the batsmen are at that exact moment.”The former umpire acknowledged the call “influenced the game”, but said it should not be viewed as costing New Zealand the match – and the tournament.”It’s unfair on England, New Zealand and the umpires involved to say it decided the outcome,” Taufel said.

'Right process followed' – ICC defends Dharmasena's overthrows call

According to Geoff Allardice, the ICC’s general manager of cricket, the playing conditions did not allow the third umpire or match referee to intervene

Nagraj Gollapudi27-Jul-2019The International Cricket Council has come out in support of umpire Kumar Dharmasena for his controversial awarding of six overthrows, instead of five, to England in the World Cup final on July 14 at Lord’s. In their first public statement of the incident, the governing body insisted the ‘right process’ was followed. The overthrow, which allowed England to resuscitate the chase from what had seemed a very difficult position a ball earlier – when they needed nine off three deliveries – resulted in six runs after the balls skimmed off Ben Stokes’ bat to the third man boundary after he had dived to complete his second run.Dharmasena said the decision was a collective one as he had consulted his on-field partner Marais Erasmus, a conversation that was audible to rest of the match officials.”They (on-field umpires) had to make a judgement call on the day as to whether the batsmen had crossed when the throw was released,” ICC’s general manager, cricket operations Geoff Allardice told ESPNcricinfo in a wide-ranging interview. “After everything that went on during that delivery, they got together over their comms system and made their decision. They certainly followed the right process when making the decision.”While there is no time limit for match officials to ascertain their decisions, Allardice said the playing conditions did not allow the third umpire or match referee, both of whom had access to the TV, to intervene.”They were aware of the law when they made the judgment about whether the batsmen had crossed or not at the time,” he said. “The playing conditions don’t allow them to refer to such a decision to a third umpire. The match referee cannot intervene when the umpires on the field have to make a judgement call like that.”ESPNcricinfo LtdHe also said the entire final would be “considered” by the ICC’s Cricket Committee, led by former India captain Anil Kumble. However, the committee is not scheduled to meet until the first quarter of 2020.Allardice also emphatically stated the importance of having a winner, when asked if there were questions raised about a shared World Cup, at the ICC Annual Conference in London last week.”The consistent view has been that the World Cup final needs a winner and a Super Over was in the playing conditions to decide a tied Final in each of the last three World Cups (2011, 2015 and 2019).”Countdown clock to combat slow over-rates
The Cricket Committee has also given the nod to a stop clock to combat slow over-rates in limited-overs cricket. Allardice said this will be trialled over the next nine months in select matches to judge its effectiveness.”In a T20 innings, the clock would start at 85 minutes when the first ball is bowled, and countdown to zero. The aim is that players, umpires and fans will know that when the clock gets to zero the bowling team should have started the last over. If there is a delay or interruption in the match due to an injury or a DRS review then the umpire will push a button on a timer that adds time back onto clock.”

No dia do 120° aniversário, Náutico assegura 100% no Pernambucano superando o Salgueiro

A EFICIÊNCIA REINOU

VITÓRIA MELHOR NO COMEÇO

DOMÍNIO RUBRO-NEGRO NO PRIMEIRO TEMPO

VOLTA DO INTERVALO TEVE GOLS RELÂMPAGOS DO VITÓRIA

A resposta do Vitória veio rápida.

Postecoglou breeds positivity at Spurs

Ever since manager Ange Postecoglou's arrival last summer, the north Londoners have undergone a very positive upward trajectory, both on and off the field.

Tottenham "expected" to sign "A-list" Harry Kane heir with 27 y/o available

Spurs are eyeing a new striker this year.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 14, 2024

Postecoglou's electric brand of high-pressing, aggressive football has won plenty of admirers as Spurs fiercely contend for a top-four place and subsequent Champions League qualification.

They sit among the English top fight's highest goal-scoring sides, losing just five times so far, and you could argue that a large part of that was down to Postecoglou losing the likes of Micky van de Ven and James Maddison to injury for months.

Pundits like Ian Wright have expressed their surprise at Spurs' sheer transformation under their popular manager, with Tottenham's head-turning form even helping them to beat the likes of Bayern Munich and Barcelona to January transfer targets.

Radu Dragusin was chased by Thomas Tuchel's side while the La Liga giants had their eyes firmly on young midfielder Lucas Bergvall. However, Spurs eventually beat both in races for each player, with Postecoglou's side hijacking Barca's deal for Bergvall on deadline day.

"It felt better in the stomach. They are both incredible clubs," said Bergvall on why he chose Spurs over Barca.

"It was a very difficult choice, it was 50-50 for a very long time, but it felt like the next step for me was Tottenham. It was not very easy to say no to Barcelona, it took a very long time to decide. It was a tough decision.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou celebrates.

"We talked a little before. In general, how the club works, how they work, how they train, what the days look like. It wasn't a persuasive talk like that. He just said the club was great and I noticed that when I got there. I got an incredible reception, it's a very family club but incredible people."

Currently back out on loan at Djurgardens IF, the 18-year-old will link up with Spurs properly in the summer.

Tottenham map out first team Bergvall plan

Football Insider and journalist Wayne Veysey have an update on the youngster and how he could be utilised in north London.

Indeed, it is believed Tottenham are planning to integrate Bergvall straight into Postecoglou's first team later this year, and those within Spurs view him as a "generational talent".

The Swede penned a five-year deal worth around £8.5 million in the winter window, yet despite his tender age, there is a belief at the club that he's more-than capable of being thrusted straight into senior action.

Alex Davies' unbeaten 75 helps Lancashire consolidate top spot

After the rare taste of defeat against Birmingham Bears, normal service resumed as Lancashire Lightning eased home with nine balls to spare on a night on which one sensed they would not have broken into a sweat even had the temperature been 10 degrees warmer. With Alex Davies dominating with a masterful 75 at the top, finding the boundary 10 times but impressing also with some skilful shot placement backed up with superb running between the wickets, the absence of their leading scorer, Glenn Maxwell, through a minor hamstring injury was barely noticed.Supported with vigour by Liam Livingstone at the start, with measured calm by Steven Croft through the middle overs and improvisation by Dane Vilas at the end, Davies underlined the depth of resources in the current Lightning squad that sees them with a five-point cushion at the top of the North Group, albeit from a match more than everyone else.

Daniel Norcross and Matt Roller wax lyrical about Somerset’s three musketeers as the quarter-final race nears boiling point – listen on ESPN radio

Adam Rossington (40) and Dwaine Pretorius (38) top scored as the Steelbacks posted 157 for 7 but even on a used pitch that gave the slow bowlers something to work with there was a never even a hint of a wobble from their opponents, who surely have one foot in the quarter-finals, not least with Maxwell set to return for Friday’s game against Birmingham.Northamptonshire are not completely out of the picture, even in eighth place, but they will have to go some to qualify from here. What had been shaping up as a pretty decent powerplay for the home side stalled rather dramatically after a bemused Richard Levi, aiming to chip into the legside field, was caught at third man off a leading edge in the fourth over. Adam Rossington worked a four off his hips in the same over to take the total to 37 for 1 after four but Richard Gleeson conceded only three in the fifth over and Saqib Mahmood just a single in the sixth, in which the Steelbacks lost another big wicket when Josh Cobb holed out to deep square leg without scoring.Lancashire, who had won the toss and fancied there would be something in the conditions for their bowlers after a miserably wet day, then took the pace off and put the squeeze on some more before Rossington and Alex Wakely eased the pressure with a boundary each as Northamptonshire reached the halfway stage at 69 for 2.On a slow pitch against disciplined bowling, the Steelbacks struggled to build any momentum, picking up only a couple of boundaries in the next five overs. A full swing of the bat from Wakely sent the ball over the rope at deep midwicket, but in the same over of an impressive spell of legspin by Livingstone came another setback as Rossington failed to clear the fielder at long-on.Livingstone cleverly bowled Wakely in his next over to finish with a tidy two for 24 before Rob Keogh and Pretorius gave the innings some belated substance with a flurry of big blows, the latter walloping Matt Parkinson for consecutive legside sixes on his way to 38 off 22 balls before the legspinner thudded the next delivery into his pads. The two had added 52 in five overs, most of them in a furious assault against Mahmood and Parkinson that accrued 37 in 12 deliveries. But James Faulkner tightened things up again with a superb final over that conceded only four and claimed two more wickets as he finished with 3 for 36.Needing just under eight an over to overhaul the Steelbacks and claim their sixth win after three no-results in their first 10 matches, Lancashire could not have asked for a more emphatic statement of intent from their openers than Davies provided by smashing the first three balls of Ben Sanderson’s opening over to the rope.Livingstone took up the gauntlet, needing little time to loosen up as lofted three of his first nine deliveries for six and though he was out looking for a fourth, well caught at deep mid-wicket, Lancashire were ahead of the game at 55 for 1 after the powerplay, even though the Steelbacks dragged the rate back a little in overs five and six.The torrent of boundaries had dwindled to a trickle as Lightning reach the halfway point at 83 for 1 after some largely tidy work by Graeme White and Keogh but Davies and Croft were content with ones and twos with wickets in hand and the scoring ahead of the required rate.Davies took advantage of a couple of loose deliveries from White to raise his boundary count to eight as he passed 50 in 38 balls before Faheem Ashraf checked Lancashire’s progress a little by yorking Croft in an excellent over that went for just two singles. But Davies continued to play splendidly, rarely passing up the opportunity for an easy boundary that came his way all too often and never keen to settle for singles if a two was available as the target came down to 34 off the last five.By now, the Steelbacks’ heads had dropped as Vilas warmed to the task and chopped Sanderson away twice through the offside before the game ended in a manner that aptly reflected the crumbling nature of the home side’s cricket as Vilas swatted away a Nathan Buck full toss which Wakely’s misfield at deep backward square turned into the winning boundary.

England injury list grows as Olly Stone is sidelined with back issue

Stone has had a recurrence of the lower back injury that had kept him out of England’s tour of the Caribbean earlier this year

Fast bowler Olly Stone has joined James Anderson and Mark Wood in the list of injured England fast bowlers after hurting his lower back during a training session on Tuesday. The injury is a recurrence of the stress fracture in his lower back that ruled him out of England’s Caribbean tour earlier this year.Stone has been ruled out for at least two weeks – meaning he is likely to miss both the second and third Ashes Tests – and will undergo a scan on Wednesday afternoon to determine the exact severity of the injury.”It’s really disappointing for Olly that he’s been ruled out of action for such an important two weeks of cricket because of a reoccurrence of his back injury,” said Warwickshire’s sport director Paul Farbrace.”At the moment there’s a bit of inflammation, but he will undergo a scan later this afternoon so that we know the full course of treatment that he can undertake with the club’s medical team and with the support of the ECB.”In the meantime, he needs to rest up before he can get his body strong again and ready to deal with the demands of being a fast bowler.”Stone’s career has regularly been set back by injuries. In 2016, he suffered a freak knee injury while celebrating a wicket in the T20 Blast playing for Northamptonshire, which kept him out for over a year.Last year, he broke into England’s squads for the tour of Sri Lanka, and was picked for four ODIs, impressing with his pace despite only taking one wicket in his 16 overs. But after being named in the Test squad to play the West Indies, he was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his lower back only days after arriving in Barbados.Only weeks after making his comeback for Warwickshire in the County Championship, Stone took 3 for 29 on his Test debut against Ireland at Lord’s, and according to coach Trevor Bayliss, was one of the bowlers in contention to come in for the injured Anderson in the second Ashes Test.Stone’s injury effectively leaves Jofra Archer and Sam Curran as the two candidates to replace Anderson at Lord’s. Archer himself was sent away to “give him time to get absolutely ready and fit” as he continued his rehabilitation from a side strain suffered during the World Cup, but he proved his fitness by bowling 12.1 overs for Sussex’s 2nd XI yesterday, taking 6 for 29 and adding a rapid century for good measure.Another potential replacement, Lewis Gregory, who was named in the squad to play Ireland, is also out of contention after suffering a stress injury to a bone in his left foot.
