Johnson scored Spurs' first on the south coast to extend a remarkable record of scoring in each of his last six starts in all competitions. The last player to achieve such a run for Spurs was Harry Kane, who did it twice, in 2018/19 and in 2015. Teddy Sheringham also managed it in 1995 and only Clive Allen scored seven, although he did so in the 1980s.

Matt Henry a doubt for West Indies series after injuring right thumb

New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry has broken his thumb while training with his domestic side Canterbury in the Plunket Shield. Henry was hit on his right thumb while batting in the nets, and the injury has put him in doubt for New Zealand’s upcoming home season.”Matt was unfortunately struck on the tip of the right thumb while batting in the nets,” Canterbury physio Tim Dovbysh said. “Matt got an X-ray [done] immediately after training which confirmed the fracture.”Dovbysh said Henry would require about four to six weeks to be fully fit, meaning he is likely to miss the first game of the home series against West Indies – the T20I at Eden Park on November 27. New Zealand are currently scheduled to play West Indies in three T20Is and two Tests, before hosting Pakistan for the same number of matches in December. This January, Henry had also injured his left thumb during the opening day of the Sydney Test against Australia.Henry has added to New Zealand’s injury concerns ahead of the home season, with their captain Kane Williamson also currently recovering from an adductor injury he picked up in the IPL.Williamson last played for his side the Sunrisers Hyderabad on October 13, having missed three games since, something which former New Zealand fast bowler Danny Morrison has put down to the excessive cricket played these days. Speaking to , Morrison said, “I just wonder whether, in terms of the amount of cricket these guys play these days, toing and froing in all the different genres of it… I’m not surprised it’s taking its toll.””Kane… plays all formats. So, when I look at that, something’s got to give. At the moment, I think he’s still very sore and very tight.”

Liverpool make first move to sign "wonderful" £13,000-a-week star for Slot

Upon the arrival of new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool have reportedly made their first move to bolster the Dutchman's midfield in what would be Michael Edwards' first signing since making his Anfield return.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds could certainly be in for a busy few months as Edwards looks to shape the current Liverpool squad into Slot's vision and away from that of Jurgen Klopp's, who said one final goodbye this week after a legendary tenure that will forever have its place in the Anfield history books.

With the Slot era set to get underway, however, potential changes have already stolen the headlines in Merseyside, with the likes of Rodrygo and Aurelien Tchouameni linked with sensational switches from Real Madrid in what would be some statement from all those at Liverpool. That said, Edwards has since instead turned his attention towards Portugal when it comes to handing his new manager a boost in the middle of the park, a familiar hunting ground for both he and his once successor, Julian Ward.

According to Leo Pardizo via GiveMeSport, Liverpool have enquired about signing Alan Varela, who reportedly has a release clause of £60m this summer. The Argentine, who earns a reported £13k-a-week at Porto, is still just 22 years old and has attracted the interest of Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern Munich, leaving him with quite the decision to make this summer.

Liverpool aren't afraid to splash the cash to improve their midfield, as proved last summer of course. And now they could finally welcome a long-term defensive midfielder, with Wataru Endo already 31 years old and unlikely to be at his best for an extended period of time, such is the ruthless nature of the Premier League. But that should allow Varela to step in at the perfect time.

"Wonderful" Varela can replace Endo

As surprisingly good as Endo has been for Liverpool since arriving last summer, the Reds need a long-term solution for that defensive midfield role if they are to permanently unleash Alexis Mac Allister's best form. And that solution should be the former Brighton man's compatriot in Varela this summer.

Valera's numbers on the ball are particularly impressive and there could be an argument that he's yet to even reach his best form at 22 years old. A move to Liverpool this summer would, on paper, result in significant improvement if all goes well under Slot. The Argentine has certainly earned fans during what is still a young career, with Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig describing him as "wonderful" on X.

When the summer transfer window arrives, the Porto star will be one to watch amid impressive interest, as Liverpool look to end any doubts about their midfield once and for all.

Sunderland losing £3m star would be as big a blow as Clarke leaving

Sunderland fans would have hoped that there would be a bit more optimism in the air around the Stadium of Light ahead of the 2024/25 campaign kicking off, but the mood still feels sour.

The Black Cats remain without a manager, as the saga to find Michael Beale's permanent successor continues to irritate those situated in Wearside, whilst there's plenty of talk surrounding a number of Sunderland's top gems packing their bags for pastures new this summer.

Sunderland winger Jack Clarke.

Jack Clarke's name is always being floated about as a potential outgoing, after bagging 15 goals last season to be a ray of sunshine to cut through the doom and gloom, whilst Dan Neil's contract situation could soon raise the anxiety levels, with the homegrown product reportedly hesitant to commit to Sunderland owing to the precarious manager situation.

Chris Rigg is another face that the powers that be at Sunderland will be desperate to hold onto past this transfer window, with new reports suggesting he's in the same camp as Neil when it comes to securing his immediate Black Cats future.

The latest on Chris Rigg's future at Sunderland

According to Sunderland Echo journalist James Copley, there's a deal in principle agreed between the Championship side and Rigg for the now 17-year-old to sign a professional deal at the Stadium of Light.

But, with notable interest from elsewhere for the teenage sensation potentially tempting, and no new boss occupying the Black Cats dug-out just yet, Rigg hasn't yet penned the deal put forward to him.

Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg.

Sunderland will aim to tie down their highly-rated starlet soon, to avoid an uncertain Neil-type scenario, knowing that the wide-eyed midfielder could be a huge part of the Wearside outfit heading into the future.

Arguably, keeping a firm grip on Rigg could be as crucial as Clarke sticking it out in Sunderland quarters for the next campaign, with what the teenager could offer over many years to come, before potentially then being sold on for far more than the reported £3m price-tag that had previously been placed above his head.

Rigg's importance to Sunderland

Given plenty of first-team experience by interim boss Mike Dodds last campaign, with Rigg amassing 21 second-tier games, the youngster never looked too out of his comfort zone, as the nimble number 31 held his own.

Rigg would end up helping himself to two strikes from those Championship clashes, as the Academy wonderkid featured, in some capacity, in the last 13 matches of the otherwise disappointing season for his team.

1. Derek Forster

15 years, 6 months + 3 days

2. Chris Rigg

15 years, 6 months + 20 days

3. Jimmy Hamilton

16 years, 3 months + 11 days

4. Bali Mumba

16 years, 6 months + 28 days

5. Dan Neil

16 years, 11 months + 0 days

Sourced by Transfermarkt

Already immortalised into the Sunderland hall-of-fame, as can be seen looking at the table above, it would feel like a kick in the teeth for the Black Cats if Rigg was moved on already, with a major move up to the Premier League perhaps a premature switch for a starlet who is still inexperienced at a senior level, having only made 25 professional appearances for his current employers to date.

Whereas, there would be obvious anger if Clarke was moved on in the short-term, but there would be no qualms if the electric winger wanted a higher-up move, having been a loyal servant to Sunderland for many years now, accumulating 122 games in the process.

Whereas, Rigg – who was described as being a "warrior" by ex-Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray – has only just started his journey, and could be a huge sale down the line, after further endearing himself to his loyal set of supporters. Thus, losing him now would not be ideal in the slightest – he could just become one of the best to emerge out of the academy in quite some time.

Dan Neil isn't the only 'outstanding' Sunderland star who could leave

Sunderland will be keen to keep this star around at the club even if Dan Neil moves on.

Leeds must bin Elland Road dud who earns 2x more than Summerville

Leeds United know, as well as having to deal with outgoings involving their stars this summer, that the off-season also presents a great opportunity to get rid of some deadwood still lurking in the camp.

Jack Harrison looks to be nearing to a loan move back to Everton for a second successive year to the relief of everyone at Elland Road, whilst Daniel Farke and Co now turn their attention to the future of Maximilian Wober in Leeds white.

max-wober-leeds-united-academy-transfer-loan-james-debayo-farke

Only featuring for Leeds briefly during their relegation campaign down from the Premier League, having only been bruised by the experience slightly by joining mid-way through the season, Wober will still be one the Championship side will look to offload soon.

That could prove to be a tricky sale, however, when taking into account his recent horror-show performance against France in the ongoing Euros tournament.

What the future hold for Wober future at Leeds

Roy Keane, speaking on ITV at half-time of Austria's eventual 1-0 defeat to Didier Deschamps' outfit, was less than impressed with Wober's own-goal rippling the back of his nation's net, labelling it as 'really poor' defending, with his stock falling as a direct consequence of this bad slice of luck.

Wober was equally shaky at points during his brief spell at Leeds, only tallying up two clean sheets from the 16 appearances he managed for the West Yorkshire side, before moving on to Borussia Mönchengladbach on loan in the wake of relegation.

Wober had shone playing out in the Bundesliga last season, away from battling it out for Farke's men back in England, with two goals and three assists mustered up, but Leeds' reported asking price of £12.5m to try and make this deal a permanent one has become a stumbling block for the German side.

Leeds could do with some additional defensive reinforcements next season with Joe Rodon no longer present, meaning Wober coming back and fighting for his spot again could be handy, but his previous hefty wage for Leeds will also be a concern, with the Austrian dud earning two times more than Crysencio Summerville when playing in the Premier League.

Leeds United defender Max Wober.

Wober's wage at Leeds

As per Capology, Wober was earning a handsome £35k-per-week in the top-flight for Leeds during 2022/23, whilst Summerville, before his immense Championship campaign, was pocketing far less at £15k-per-week.

Wober's weekly salary during the relegation season would still see him earn more than the electric Dutchman in the here and now, who remains on a meagre £15k-per-week salary, despite the Championship Player of the Year winner amassing a ridiculous 31 goal contributions, only for his side to fall at the final hurdle in the play-off final.

4. Daniel James

£50k-per-week

= 4. Pascal Struijk

£50k-per-week

5. Maximilian Wober (22/23)

£35k-per-week

As Summerville now eyes a move back up to the Premier League without Leeds, Wober could be staring the end of his own career at Elland Road in the face, on the contrary, with the Austrian defender only £15k-per-week off entering into the top five earners in Farke's camp, despite being pushed to one side on loan.

Harrison, who is nearing a return to Goodison Park, ended up earning an eye-watering £90k-per-week when he was still an important cog in West Yorkshire, with Leeds wanting to get him off their books permanently down the line.

Whilst Harrison moves away, Leeds could be stuck with Wober if they can't find a suitor willing to take him on, with the Austria international going down as a major flop in the transfer market for the Whites, when purchased for a bumper £11m just last year.

WHAT NEXT FOR MAN UTD?

Ten Hag's underperforming side will host Brentford at Old Trafford on Sunday, October 20 as they will look to get their third Premier League win of the season.

Man Utd step up move for £64m star who’d be a better buy than Zirkzee

Over the last few weeks, Manchester United have been linked with plenty of players as they look to bolster the squad ahead of next season.

However, it’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Joshua Zirkzee that look to be the two most concrete targets, with the latter being the most attainable of the two.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

Yet, it seems that the centre-back spot will be the main priority, especially due to the exit of Raphael Varane and the number of injuries suffered in that spot.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at a defensive target for the Red Devils, who has the potential to be an even better signing than Zirkzee.

Man Utd will look to sign a centre back

According to reports from Spain, via The Faithful MUFC, Man United are interested in signing Ronald Araujo.

It’s said that the Red Devils have intensified their efforts to sign the Uruguayan rock, and they’re ready to go ‘all out.’

Barcelona'sRonaldAraujo

The reason for this is due to Araujo and Barcelona not currently being on the same page regarding a contract renewal, which could provide an opportunity for United.

It’s mentioned that a £64m fee will be enough to secure Araujo’s signature if he does decide to depart, and Man Utd will increase his wage dramatically.

Why Araujo would be a better signing than Zirkzee

It’s a known fact that over the last couple of seasons, Araujo has played a huge role in the success of Barcelona.

The versatile defender was once again a consistent performer last season, even though he missed eight games through injury.

Manchester United transfer target Ronald Araujo in action for Barcelona.

In La Liga, the 25-year-old started just 21 matches, but during those games he proved he was elite, also netting once and picking up two assists.

Araujo was also handed the captain’s armband at stages, which just shows how highly rated he is as not just a player but also a character.

Nonetheless, as you can see from the stats above, Araujo is the definition of a complete centre-back that’d improve the United backline significantly.

Regardless of whether he’s under pressure or against a low block, the Uruguay international is fantastic on the ball, showing great composure, vision, and progression, as shown by his passing stats and touches.

Barcelona defenderRonald Araujo.

On the other hand, he’s an absolute monster of an athlete, having extreme speed and physicality, which makes him incredibly difficult to play against.

This athleticism and reading of the game is why he’s such a “Rolls-Royce” of a defender, as dubbed by football scout Jacek Kulig, with his duel win rate and dribbled past proving that.

Furthermore, Araujo has also displayed that he’s a versatile asset by playing at right back, which would give Erik Ten Hag much more tactical flexibility and the team more depth in multiple positions.

Now the question that still remains is: why would Araujo be better than Zirkzee? Well, the answer is rather simple.

To begin with, the centre-back spot at Man United is arguably the weakest in the squad, not necessarily because it lacks quality but because of the lack of reliability, as highlighted by veteran hero Jonny Evans making 23 Premier League appearances last season.

Therefore, a player of Araujo’s quality would simply walk into the starting eleven, whereas Zirkzee would have to compete with Rasmus Hojlund for the lone striker spot in Ten Hag’s 4-2-3-1.

In an ideal world, both players would join the club and bolster the squad, but the Barca man truly has the potential to have more of an influence at Old Trafford.
