Man Utd could sign "unplayable" England star who’s even better than Zirkzee

Manchester United had a quiet start to the summer transfer window, but over the last week or so, they have burst into life.

First came the much-deserved renewal of Johnny Evans' one-year contract, and then came arguably the biggest signing in the Premier League thus far: Joshua Zirkzee.

The Dutch striker enjoyed a productive campaign with Bologna last season, and while he's not the finished article, he is undoubtedly exciting.

Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee

That said, his place in the team may already be under threat, as recent reports have now touted a much more established striker plying his trade for the Three Lions for a move to Old Trafford, and unfortunately for the Dutchman, he'd probably be an upgrade.

Manchester United transfer news

According to a recent report from transfers expert Fabrizio Romano via GIVEMESPORT, Manchester United could still sign Ivan Toney this summer.

The Italian journalist revealed that while there has not been a major development recently, he does not think the club have ruled him out.

If the move does happen, GIVEMESPORT claims that it could cost as little as £40m, which would be a dramatic reduction from his £100m asking price back in January.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

It would certainly be a surprising move and likely done to provide Zirkzee with some more cover and an older striker to learn from, but based on how good Toney can be and the glimpses of brilliant he showed at the Euros, he could end up replacing him altogether.

How Toney compares to Zirkzee

Now, due to his eight-month betting-related ban from all footballing activities, Toney's 2023/24 was a bit of a washout, and while not dreadful, his haul of four goals and two assists in 17 games was not up to his usual standard.

So, to compare him more accurately and fairly to Zirkzee, it makes sense to examine his statistics from the 2022/23 campaign.

That season, he scored 21 goals and provided five assists in just 35 matches for Brentford, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.34 games.

In contrast, the Bologna ace scored 12 goals and provided seven assists in 37 appearances, equating to a worse average of a goal involvement every 1.94 games.

Output isn't the only thing that the "unplayable" Englishman, as dubbed by Alan Shearer, has over the new United man either.

Over his entire career, the former Newcastle United ace has missed just eight games through injury, whereas the player he could replace has missed 38 since the 2020/21 campaign alone.

It might not be as exciting a comparison as goals and assists, but as they say, availability is the best ability, and the Brentford star is always available.

Imagine him & Rashford: Man Utd make 'huge' offer to sign Euro 2024 star

He could be available on a loan-to-buy deal this summer

ByJoe Nuttall Jul 14, 2024

Ultimately, United look to have an incredibly exciting and potentially brilliant young striker in Zirkzee. However, in a season in which Ten Hag might be desperate to deliver results as quickly as possible, bringing in Toney might be the way to go – especially if he really is available for just £40m.

Prior to the most prestigious of awards being handed, the expectation was that a Golden Ball would end up in the hands of a Brazilian forward. It then emerged that Rodri, with Premier League and Euro 2024 titles under his belt, would be recognised as the best player on the planet.

Real Madrid refused to send any representatives to the glitzy Ballon d’Or ceremony in disgust, as they reacted angrily to the most dramatic of snubs, but Rodri is revelling in his new standing at the top of the global game and has offered some words of advice to Vinicius when it comes to achieving a similar standing himself.

WHAT RODRI SAID

Spain international Rodri has told : “I think he's an intelligent guy and he'll realise over time that the more he pays attention to the pitch, the better he'll be. Like everyone, he has areas for improvement both on and off the pitch. He's young, I'm sure that people will give him good advice and even more so when he's at Madrid. It's a club with values.”

BCB confirms Bangladesh will also host England and New Zealand in 2021

Formal announcements to be made once tour dates are confirmed by the boards

Following news that Australia will tour Bangladesh ahead of this year’s T20 World Cup, BCB’s chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury has said that they will also host England and New Zealand. He, however, said that formal announcements will only be made once the tour dates are confirmed by the boards.Chowdhury had said that Australia would play three T20Is as well as a two-match Test series in Bangladesh. But since CA and BCB couldn’t quite fit in the Tests, they have found time for an extra T20I match.”Both boards (CA and BCB) have agreed in principle for Australia’s tour of Bangladesh before the World Cup T20, which is going to be held in October,” Chowdhury said. “It has been scheduled as such. Ahead of the World Cup T20, England, Australia and New Zealand will tour Bangladesh, but a tri-series hasn’t yet been decided.”I think we had a commitment with Australia that they would play two Tests and two T20Is. Since we could fit the T20s we will increase it to three. It is not that it is replacing anything. We would have fit in a Test match if there was enough space. It will be a good preparation for us ahead of the World T20. We have an opportunity to play some high-profile teams.”According to the ICC’s published FTP, England are scheduled to tour Bangladesh in October to play three ODIs (as part of the ICC’s ODI Super League) and three T20Is.Meanwhile, Chowdhury added that all teams can fit in their World Test Championship matches until April after the timeline was extended from March. As such, the BCB is working on a tour of Sri Lanka to play the three-match Test series that was postponed twice last year.”It should be clarified that most of the FTP commitments currently are for the World Test Championships and the ODI competition (ODI Super League). There’s a guideline to complete the WTC matches before the final in June. The guideline to arrange those matches has been extended to April, from March.”To fit in these postponed series, both teams have to be available. At the moment only Sri Lanka is available till April. It is not possible to fit in the rest of the (postponed) matches. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are free in April so we are trying to schedule the two or three Tests of the WTC during that time.”

The Manchester City star became the first midfielder since Luka Modric to win the prestigious Ballon d'Or award this year as he beat Real Madrid's Vinicius Junior to the Golden Ball. Los Blancos, as a club, decided to boycott the ceremony just hours before the event as they had come to know about the outcome before.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Brazilian's snub in Paris has divided opinions in world football, however, Rodri claimed that he was unfazed by the Spanish giants' absence at the ceremony. He also went on to claim that Vinicius Jr. would not have been his second choice for the award this year if he had the opportunity to vote.

  • WHAT RODRI SAID

Speaking to , the Manchester City midfielder said: "I felt a bit of disbelief when, at the time of the presentation of the trophy, half the room shouted 'Vinicius, Vinicius!'. In any case, there was a lot of respect for me from the audience because afterwards they all stood up and applauded me.

"The Ballon d'Or has rewarded consistency, which is the most difficult thing in football. I am not the one to say whether I deserved this award or not. In 2023 I thought I could win it for my great season at City and this year I think I did even better."

He added: "Winning it changes your life a bit, it's a before and after. I've been congratulated by a lot of people, one of the ones I'm most excited about is [Andres] Iniesta, who should also have a Ballon d'Or in his showcase because he's been the best footballer in our country's history."

The 28-year-old might have sparked yet another controversy as he revealed that Vinicius Jr. would have been his third choice for the award, adding: "I would have chosen [Dani] Carvajal second and Vinicius third."

When asked if Real Madrid's boycott hurt him, the City star said: "It didn't hurt me that they weren't present. It was my moment, with my family, and the last thing I thought about was the people who hadn't come to the gala.

"Did I receive any congratulations from Madrid? There were some from former players of this club like Nacho and Joselu, with whom I shared a dressing room," said Rodri, who made it clear that "I didn't miss Vinicius not congratulating me. I care about my people, my family and my club. I wouldn't have done what Real Madrid did by not showing up to the gala, but there's no point in thinking about it any more."

Tottenham now "really starting to move" for £8k-per-week Postecoglou target

Tottenham are pushing to land an exciting new signing for Ange Postecoglou ahead of the new Premier League season, it has been revealed.

Spurs continue transfer trend

Recent transfer windows have seen Spurs shy away from big money moves for the most part and instead look to find future gems, as they did with the signing of Udinese defender Destiny Udogie and Metz midfielder Pape Sarr.

They have continued in that vein this summer, signing Archie Gray from Leeds United in a deal worth up to £40m to bolster their midfield, while they have blended that with experience by renewing Timo Werner's loan in north London.

However, targetting young players is a trend that shows no signs of stopping.

Spurs pushing for winger

Now, it has emerged that Tottenham are the side currently pushing the hardest to land Stade Rennais winger Desire Doue amid interest from across Europe. Though just 19, he has already made a lasting impression in France.

Last season, the versatile winger grabbed four goals and five assists in 31 Ligue 1 appearances to help Rennes safely into midtable and out of relegation trouble.

Asked about Doue, teammate Baptiste Santamaria was full of praise for the teenager, and revealed that he had never seen such a gifted player.

"He's a very talented player with a great sense of football. But he's still young. But he's a player who aspires to go to the biggest clubs. He's one of a kind: he likes to hit the ball but he's solid on his feet. Desire's technical, percussive and physical qualities are quite incredible. When he becomes more consistent, he'll be unplayable. For his age, he's the most gifted youngster I've seen in my career", he explained.

And Postecoglou is understood to be a big fan of the teenager and wants to bring him to Tottenham this summer, with Rennes understood to be holding out for around £35m to let him leave, a fee that would make him second only to Jeremy Doku in their list of most expensive departures.

Rennes midfielder Desire Doue

With that in mind, transfer journalist Ben Jacobs has revealed that the Lilywhites are pushing to get a deal done, stealing a march on other interested parties in the process.

“Links for Desire Doue, but I’m told it’s not Chelsea at the moment who are the club to watch, it is Tottenham who are pushing”, he explained.

“Desire Doue, PSG are one of the suitors, Bayern and Spurs, and Spurs are the ones who are really starting to move now. PSG are there but I’m told that Spurs are the ones who are really starting to circle at this stage.”

Luis Enrique's side are looking to replace Kylian Mbappe this summer, but can already boast both Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembele in the wide areas, while Bayern Munich have just added Michael Olise to ranks that already include Serge Gnabry, Kinglsey Coman and Leroy Sane.

As a result, a move to north London and the Premier League may prove surprisingly enticing for Doue, who would be likely to see plenty of first team football, even if Postecoglou's side are not in the Champions League for the 2024-25 campaign.

However, he still has two years left to run on his £8.5k per week deal with Rennes, which means that he could well opt for another season in France before making the next step in his career.

Should Spurs manage to persuade him otherwise and get the deal over the line, it would represent a massive coup for the Lilywhites.

Selection puzzles for Bangladesh as they look to strike back after Chattogram battering

Shakib Al Hasan and Shadman Islam are out with injuries, while West Indies have no injury concerns

Big pictureOh, how the tables have turned! How beautifully the momentum has shifted West Indies’ way, and the pressure towards Bangladesh.West Indies hold the lead in the series, and therefore the edge, after their debutants Kyle Mayers and Nkrumah Bonner put together a comeback for the ages on the fifth day in Chattogram. Mayers’ unbeaten 210 was only the second time a batsman struck a match-winning fourth-innings double-century. That it came from a debutant, who had very little familiarity with the pitch he was batting on, made it all the more remarkable. Bonner’s 86 was a coming-of-age innings for a cricketer who has waited long. While Shannon Gabriel’s show of deadly pace on such a slow pitch on the third evening was inspirational.Related

Mayers' knock brings father Shirley Clarke to tears

A delighted Phil Simmons, the West Indies coach, continued to be cautious, stressing on finishing the job, something they have failed to do on several previous occasions. But, while the Chattogram win didn’t come easy – Test wins don’t – it is also true that such a result can do wonders to the overall confidence within a squad.Quite the opposite is the case in the Bangladesh camp. Bad as the result was, the news that Shakib Al Hasan wouldn’t be fit for the second Test made things worse. And opening batsman Shadman Islam joined Shakib on the sidelines when he failed to recover sufficiently from the hip injury he sustained while fielding in the first Test. Soumya Sarkar – who underwent the PCR test on February 7 and has been kept in isolation since – has been named Shakib’s replacement, while no replacement has been named for Shadman.Who slots in for Shakib is just one of many questions staring at the Bangladesh team management. Whether the spinners can find their rhythm in the Dhaka Test is going to have a bearing on their fortunes, because, while Mehidy Hasan picked up eight wickets in Chattogram, more would be expected from Taijul Islam and Nayeem Hasan. Bangladesh have a spin-centric bowling strategy, that has now failed more often than it has worked for them, and with the Dhaka pitch likely to be assisting spinners, the make-up of Bangladesh’s team will need careful thought.Form guide
Bangladesh LWLLL
West Indies WLLLL
In the spotlightAfter his match-winning knock in Chattogram, Kyle Mayers will have the eyes of the world on him. He has called himself “a student of the game”, and it will be interesting to see how the newcomer goes, now that he will have a fair bit of hype to live up to.
A maiden Test century to go with eight wickets in the Chattogram Test has given Mehidy Hasan back his Test spot. But he will have to put in another big performace, especially in Shakib’s absence.
Team newsWhenever Shakib isn’t around, Bangladesh struggle with team balance. They have Sarkar, Mohammad Mithun, Yasir Ali and Saif Hassan among frontline batsmen and Taskin Ahmed, Abu Jayed, Ebadot Hossain and Hasan Mahmud among bowlers in the squad. Among them, Sarkar is the closest they have to an allrounder.
Bangladesh (possible): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Najmul Hossain Shanto, 4 Mominul Haque (capt), 5 Mushfiqur Rahim, 6 Liton Das (wk), 7 Mehidy Hasan, 8 Nayeem Hasan, 9 Taijul Islam, 10 Mustafizur Rahman, 11 Abu Jayed
It is unlikely that West Indies will make changes to the XI from the side that won in Chattogram. They have fast bowler Alzarri Joseph and left-arm spinners Veerasammy Permaul and Kavem Hodge and allrounder Raymon Reifer waiting in the wings, but they might have to continue to wait, barring an injury.
West Indies (likely): 1 Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), 2 John Campbell, 3 Shayne Moseley, 4 Nkrumah Bonner, 5 Kyle Mayers, 6 Jermaine Blackwood, 7 Joshua Da Silva (wk), 8 Rahkeem Cornwall, 9 Jomel Warrican, 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Shannon Gabriel

Pitch and conditionsThe pitch should help spinners more than the one in Chattogram did. Sides batting first in the last five years have averaged around 332, with five out of six teams winning the match after batting first.
Stats and trivia The 216-run partnership between Mayers and Bonner in Chattogram was the highest between two Test debutants in 57 years.
Mehidy is two wickets short of 100 in Tests, while Liton Das is 34 runs short of reaching 1000 Test runs.
Quotes”We start from zero again. We have to go back to the process, we have to practice and prepare well. It is going to be a different wicket, ground and everything. It is important for us to assess again. Going over the processes and ensure we do well.”

“It would have been great to have Shakib in the side in Mirpur but in his absence, myself, Taijul and Nayeem have to take more responsibility. We will try to bowl more in the right areas, so that they can’t play us easily.”

Offer ready: Arsenal target perfect Saka rival in "extraordinary" £42m ace

Two games in, and it would be fair to say that Arsenal's pre-season preparations are going rather well thus far.

A team full of youngsters drew and then beat a nearly full-strength Bournemouth side on penalties last week, and then a slightly stronger team ran out 2-1 victors against Manchester United in the early hours of Sunday morning thanks to goals from Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli.

While a good portion of the squad are now back together, a number of the Spanish and English contingents, including club poster boy Bukayo Saka, are still on holiday due to their run to the final of the Euros.

The Hale End superstar has barely had a moment's rest over the last few years, so signing some genuine competition is a priority this summer, a priority that, based on recent reports, Edu Gaspar and Co are tackling.

Arsenal transfer news

According to the Sunday edition of Mundo Deportivo via Sport Witness, Arsenal have reignited their interest in Barcelona ace Raphinha.

Barcelona star Raphinha.

The report claims that the Gunners are prepared to make an offer worth around €50m – £42m – for the Brazilian winger this summer. However, the report also reveals that Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal have already made a €65m offer, which converts to about £55m.

Yet, the good news for the Gunners is that the winger has no interest in moving to the Middle Eastern league at the moment.

Raphinha Barcelona

Getting the former Leeds United star out of Barcelona this summer could prove costly, but given his talent and Arsenal's need for a Saka rival, it may well be worth it.

How Raphinha compares to Saka

So, if Arsenal are going to splash north of £40m on Raphinha to be the perfect competition for Saka this summer, he'll need to be able to come into the side and maintain a high level of performance on the right, even if there is a slight drop-off.

In which case, how does he compare to the Englishman? Well, when it comes to their output last season, the Hale End superstar predictably comes out on top. However, the Brazilian's numbers are still impressive and suggest he'd be able to perform at a high level for Arteta when needed.

For example, in his 47 appearances for the North Londoners last season, the Ealing-born gem scored 20 goals and provided 14 assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.38 games – simply world-class.

In comparison, the "extraordinary" Barça ace, as dubbed by former manager Xavi, scored ten goals and provided 13 assists in 37 appearances for the Blaugrana, equating to a goal involvement on average every 1.60 games.

So, with it clear that the former Leeds star wouldn't be a dramatic downgrade in terms of pure output, how does he hold up when we look at their underlying numbers?
