'Wanted to take pressure off Rohit' – Boucher on Hardik captaining Mumbai Indians

“We still want him as a player because we believe he still has a great value to add, and just go out and enjoy it, without the hype of being a captain”

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Feb-2024Mumbai Indians head coach Mark Boucher has said the team wanted to take pressure off Rohit Sharma, who had captained the side since 2013, when they handed the mantle to Hardik Pandya ahead of IPL 2024.”[Rohit] has not had the best couple of seasons of late with the bat, but he has done well as a captain,” Boucher said on the podcast. “One thing I picked up with Ro, as well, who is a fantastic guy – he has been captaining for ages and he has done really well for Mumbai Indians, and India as well – is that he walks into a place and there are just cameras, and he is so busy. Speaking with the Mumbai Indians group, we thought that this is an opportunity to step in for his last year or so.”Across the last two IPL seasons, Rohit scored 600 runs at an average of 20.00 and a strike rate of 126.84. Mumbai won their fifth title in 2020 but failed to make the playoffs in 2021 and 2022 and were knocked out in the second Qualifier in IPL 2023.Related

Hardik takes over from Rohit as Mumbai Indians captain

Mumbai Indians trade Hardik from Titans and trade Cameron Green to RCB

“We still want him as a player because we believe he still has a great value to add, and just go out and enjoy it, without the hype of being a captain,” Boucher said. “He is still going to captain India, that hype is going to be there. But when he steps into the IPL maybe just taking that extra bit of pressure off him as a captain, maybe we get the best out of Rohit Sharma.”We see him playing with a nice smile on his face, spending a bit of time with the beautiful family he has got. There’s no easy way to do it.”Mumbai bought back Hardik from Gujarat Titans in an all-cash deal in November last year and made him captain ahead of the auction in December. Hardik captained Titans to the IPL title in 2022 and led them to a runners-up finish in 2023.”We saw a window period to get Hardik back as a player,” Boucher said. “He is a Mumbai Indians boy as well. He’s gone over to another franchise, he won his first year as captain, came runner-up in his second year. There’s obviously some very good leadership skills as well.”In India, people get quite emotional, but you take the emotion out of it, it’s just more of a cricketing decision that was made. I do think it is going to bring the best out of Rohit – as a person, as a player – and let him go out there and enjoy and score runs.”Boucher also looked forward to working with Jasprit Bumrah, who missed IPL 2023 with a back injury. “Bumrah coming back strengthens us big way,” he said. “He is someone that I have looked at and I have gone, ‘this guy knows what he is doing’. He is very smart, apparently, good team man as well. That’s one relationship I am looking forward to.”

Mumbai men to get 100% pay raise from 2024-25 domestic season

Following this hike, players in the top experience bracket (40-plus first-class caps) stand to earn INR 120,000 per day

Mumbai celebrate their 42nd Ranji Trophy win•PTI

In a move that could potentially pave way for the others to follow suit, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has agreed to incentivise its senior men’s team with a 100% pay raise from the 2024-25 season.A recommendation for the state association to match players’ BCCI earnings from the domestic circuit has been approved at the MCA’s apex council meeting. This effectively doubles a player’s earnings through the season. The BCCI currently pays players at the senior men’s level across three slabs. Players with over 40 first-class caps earn INR 60,000 a day, while those who have played 21-40 games take home INR 50,000 a day, and those who have featured in fewer than 20 games earn INR 40,000 a day.Related

Indian players stand to earn INR 45-60 lakhs per Test

Opening batter Bhupen Lalwani, for example, who featured in all 10 games Mumbai played in Ranji Trophy 2023-24, would have earned INR 17.2 lakhs as match fees. Had this rule come into effect from this season, he would have stood to earn INR 34.4 lakh.Lalwani has played just 14 first-class matches, which means his base earnings from the Ranji Trophy stand at INR 40,000 a day at the moment. The overall earnings for someone who has featured in over 40 first-class games could be significantly higher.Earlier in the month, the MCA announced prize money of INR 5 crores for its players. This was over and above the prize money offered by the BCCI to Mumbai for winning the Ranji Trophy. The move to match earnings is especially bound to benefit those who don’t have an IPL contract.”We felt that the player should earn more, especially those who play Ranji Trophy cricket,” MCA president Amol Kale said. “For us red-ball cricket matters the most as the Ranji Trophy holds a special place for everyone in Mumbai.”There has been a growing chorus among former players to prioritise domestic cricket, particularly in the wake of the BCCI’s decision to introduce a Test Incentive scheme to its centrally contracted men’s players for prioritising red-ball cricket. Under this scheme, a player’s match fees will go up by 300% if he features in more than 75% of Tests in a particular season.Sunil Gavaskar, the former India captain, voiced his support for extending a similar scheme to first-class cricketers. He had asked the board to consider doubling or tripling existing match fees to “encourage players and look after the feeder system.””If the Ranji Trophy fee can be doubled or tripled, certainly there will be a lot more people playing the Ranji Trophy, [and a] lot less pullouts,” Gavaskar had said. “They will all be wanting to play with the slab system – [if] every ten first-class matches you get that much more – so I would request the BCCI to look at that aspect as well.”This isn’t the first time the MCA has contemplated such a move. In 2022-23, the MCA had proposed annual contracts, and had even set up a three-member committee to propose a structure. That move, proposed by former president Vijay Patil, wasn’t passed by the Apex Council. The MCA soon conducted elections and Patil was replaced by Kale, the current president.

'Fine line of being negative and being an idiot' – Marcelo Balboa calls out fellow former USMNT players for excessive vitriol toward Mauricio Pochettino's national team

The former USMNT and MLS defender called out fellow retired national team players for harsh criticism of current squad

    WHAT HAPPENED

Former USMNT defender Marcel Balboa acknowledged that – while criticism is inevitable – several ex-players "cross the line" with their vitriol over the current men's national team. He suggested those critics ultimately want American soccer to grow and the national team to succeed, and thus questioned the upside of harsh comments.

“We cross the line because of social media, we cross the line because we want clicks and likes and we want people to banter back and forth,” Balboa said on CBS Sports Golazo America. “I will always be a U.S national team supporter… Tell me what good it does as a dude beating up Christian Pulisic every day or Tyler Adams or Weston McKennie? It makes no sense, man, it makes no sense to me. But I get it, that's part of our business. This is something we've always wanted. We wanted this kind of pressure as athletes.

"We've never had it in soccer and now we have it. So, I understand it. But I think there's a fine line of being negative and being an idiot and then being, you know, critical on certain people. But listen, win or lose, I've got I've got their back and I always will… Negativity is easy, but positive comments are always very difficult to come across. So I'd rather stay to the positive side, and back Christian Pulisic and those guys knowing how they think. Because we all played on the national team."

  • WHAT BALBOA SAID

The Colorado Rapids legend said, despite some struggles over the past two  years, that he's optimistic about the USMNT ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

“I think we labelled it too quick and too early as media, myself included, that we said this is a golden generation,” Balboa said. “That's a lot of pressure on a team that has these kind of players. But you know what, congratulations, that you’re an athlete, you're representing your country and we're going to put you on the stage and we're going to call you, because no one's ever played at AC Milan, or at Juventus, or in England, like they're doing.

“So, you know what? I think this group is very talented. I think this group is probably – I wouldn't say the best team we've ever had, but I would say this is one of the top ones we've had… they know what they've already lived their first World Cup, just like we did in '90. So again, for me it's, you know, what ‘Do your thing man.' I mean, listen, all the, all the negative stuff all he does is fuel to fire.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the brink? Besiktas line up replacement just six months after appointing Man Utd legend

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure at Besiktas is reportedly on shaky ground, with mounting pressure from within the club possibly leading to an early dismissal. Despite being appointed only in January 2025, the Norwegian manager is believed to be on the verge of being replaced as the Turkish giants reassess their managerial direction.

However, consistency has since become an issue. The initial momentum has faded, with results turning mixed and performances lacking cohesion. The recent 4-2 defeat to Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round has only intensified scrutiny on the former Premier League manager.

DID YOU KNOW?

suggests that Nuri Sahin, the former Borussia Dortmund player and manager, has entered serious contention to take over the managerial reins at Besiktas. Sahin’s name has gained traction within the club’s hierarchy, particularly due to his tactical acumen and deep familiarity with Turkish football. What adds fuel to the speculation is Sahin’s recent appearance at a Besiktas game. Fans noted his presence in the stands as a possible indication of behind-the-scenes discussions already taking place. In addition to potentially becoming head coach, there are whispers that Sahin might also take on influence over transfer activity, a role that some within Besiktas believe should not be entrusted to Solskjaer alone.

Alongside Sahin, another familiar figure has emerged in the conversation, former Besiktas boss Sergen Yalcin. Having previously led the team to domestic success, Yalcin remains a popular figure among sections of the fanbase and is reportedly open to a return.

Serdal Adali, president of Besiktas, is believed to be evaluating all possibilities as he considers how best to guide the club back to winning ways. The pressure to make the right call is immense, especially with fans expecting progress both in Europe and the Turkish Super Lig this season.

Smale sets out to cause a storm in allrounder ranks

Teenage left-arm spinner worked hard on her batting over winter to strengthen strings to her bow

Valkerie Baynes19-Apr-2024Sophia Smale ended last season’s Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy on a personal high and begins this one with big ambitions.A half-century as opener and two wickets for Western Storm, albeit in a losing cause against Thunder, came immediately off the back of a 30-ball 32 batting at No. 8 and 2 for 38 in another defeat, to Central Sparks. But it was the culmination of some hard work on her batting technique after returning from South Africa as part of England’s Under-19 Women’s side which finished runners up to India at the inaugural age group T20 World Cup.”That 50 was probably a big score,” Smale told ESPNcricinfo while on tour with England U19s in Sri Lanka last month. “It was also just a big point to prove. I came back up the order and then I think a lot of people weren’t sure and almost thought of me as middle order. So I definitely think that was a good time score runs.”I’m well aware at the minute I’m seen as a bowler and that’s fine with me, but if someone said ‘what do you want to be in the future?’ I want to be a batter that bowls left-arm spin – and I’m not talking part-time, left-arm spin – I’m talking a batting allrounder hopefully. That’s the ambition.”Related

Knight challenges England players and hopefuls to 'dominate' regional games

In Sri Lanka for a tri-series with the hosts and Australia Under-19s, she took five wickets across three T20s, including 3 for 19 against Australia as England topped the table. England lost both their 50-over matches, with Smale taking three wickets and scoring 33 runs in all. After an eye-catching season for Oval Invincibles as a 17-year-old in the 2022 Women’s Hundred, where she took five wickets at an average of 21.60 and economy rate of 7.20, she returned last year with eight wickets at 18.25 and 6.25. She is relishing the prospect of being reunited with some of the biggest names in the game, which will this year include prolific Sri Lanka opener and captain Chamari Athapaththu at Invincibles. At Western Storm, she has taken the chance to pick the brain of England captain Heather Knight and, although they’ve not discussed senior international prospects, Smale plans to be the sort of player “dominating” domestic cricket that Knight called for ahead of this weekend’s RHFT opening round.”I feel like you’ve probably got to step up to England A before you go to England, so I want to be in England A, it’s something I’m aspiring to do now,” Smale said. “That’s the first stepping stone and I guess dominating domestic cricket will help me do that. If I’m putting in the performances with the bat and ball, they can’t ignore that.”I’m hoping to play for England, that’s obviously my goal, what my always dream has always been… but I also know there’s a few pretty good left-arm spinners knocking about in women’s cricket at the minute in England so it’s going to be pretty tough, that’s why I think batting is really important as well.”The importance of having a strong domestic season was emphasised this week when the ECB announced the eight teams which will play at the top level of a restructured competition from 2025. Somerset, who provide players to Storm, were one of those eight teams while neighbouring Gloucestershire were not and another feeder county, Glamorgan in Smale’s native Wales, will have to wait until at least 2027 for inclusion in the top flight. That means players from all regions are competing for fewer places at the highest level from next year and may have to move. But, before the successful team bids were announced, Smale said it was a “great time” to be a female cricketer in England and Wales, so much so that she recognised the opportunity she had upon finishing school to pursue cricket as a career.”I finished my A Levels last year and decided this is my dream, I’ve got to put everything into it,” Smale said. “I was lucky… my last year of school I was already on contract, so I just sort of walked into training straight away knowing I was on a contract.”I decided I really wasn’t set on doing anything anyway at university. Maybe if I was set on something I would’ve, but I just think you’ve got one shot, you’ve got to give it your all. You’ve got to give it every hour of your day. My motto is always, don’t look back and regret you didn’t put the work in, so that’s why it’s really important that I focus on my cricket at this moment in time.”

Devine century delivers NZ consolation win

Twelve runs needed for victory, 12 runs needed to reach a century, all the time in the world, but why wait? In the space of three balls, Sophie Devine twice hauled Charlie Dean over the fence at deep midwicket to seal a breath-taking ton and an emphatic consolation win for New Zealand in Hamilton in their final match of the ODI series, which England won 2-1.Devine came to the crease with her side 14 for 2 and smashed a 93-ball century to reel in a target of 195 with 11 overs to spare. She was well supported by Maddy Green, with whom she shared an unbroken partnership worth 105, and Amelia Kerr, who scored 29 of her 31 runs in a 76-run stand with her captain. There was no sign of the quad strain that had kept Devine out of action since the fourth T20I in her impeccable footwork as she took to England’s attack – particularly offspinner Dean and quick Lauren Filer – in a typically powerful innings which underlined her importance to the White Ferns, just as they looked in danger of squandering a golden opportunity to beat England. The visitors were bowled out inside 50 overs for the second match in a row, seamers Jess Kerr and Hannah Rowe taking three wickets each to restrict them to 194 with 3.3 overs to spare. Yet again England had to lean on Player of the Series Amy Jones, whose scores of 92 not out, 48 and 50 lifted her side after middle-order collapses throughout. On this occasion, she reached a run-a-ball half-century and shared a 73-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Dean, the pair having put on a record 130-run stand in the previous match. But this time it wasn’t enough to combat what was to come from Devine.Kate Cross struck in the third over of the run-chase as Georgia Plimmer – opening for Bernadine Bezuidenhout, who injured her hamstring while fielding in the second ODI – chased one outside off stump and edged to wicketkeeper Jones. Then Suzie Bates sent a leading edge straight to Maia Bouchier at midwicket attempting to turn Nat Sciver-Brunt squarer to the leg side.At the end of the powerplay, the hosts were 31 for 2 as Devine and Amelia Kerr settled into the early stages of their partnership. Devine was on 13 when she sent a sharp, difficult chance off Filer through the hands of Heather Knight at slip. Devine clubbed Dean over deep midwicket for twin sixes in three balls and brought up her fifty over the course of four fours in five balls off Dean’s next over.In between, Sophie Ecclestone pulled up with what appeared to be a calf problem at the start of her seventh over, but she broke the stand when she trapped Amelia Kerr lbw before leaving the field to seek treatment. Ecclestone returned to action and saw Jones fumble a stumping chance off Green with New Zealand needing 43 runs off 88 balls.Filer, who replaced fellow seamer Lauren Bell in the XI to play the fourth ODI of her fledgling international career, conceded 17 runs off her sixth over, 12 of those in fours clubbed down the ground by Devine. With 12 needed, Devine cleared the deep midwicket fence by some distance off Dean to move within one identical strike of a century and she repeated the effort two balls later.Earlier, Rowe struck in her second over, the fourth of the match, when she struck Tammy Beaumont on the back thigh with a ball that was on track to ping the top of leg stump and Jess Kerr had Maia Bouchier caught by Georgia Plimmer at extra cover with a leg-cutter for 19.Sophia Dunkley is bowled by Jess Kerr•Getty Images

After 10 overs, England were 50 for 2 but they lost 4 for 13 in 34 balls after Sciver-Brunt and Knight put on 58 runs together for the third wicket. Amelia Kerr got a hand to a difficult chance but couldn’t cling onto a ball driven straight back at her by Sciver-Brunt, on 15 at the time. She did, however, ultimately remove Sciver-Brunt for 27, caught by Fran Jonas.Sophia Dunkley, who lost her place in the line-up after the five T20Is where she only reached double figures once, with a score of 32, in four innings, returned to the side after Alice Capsey sprained her ankle during training on Saturday. But Dunkley managed just 1 off the five balls she faced before playing down the wrong line to a Jess Kerr delivery which angled back in and hit the top of middle stump.Kerr grabbed her second, hitting Danni Wyatt low on the front pad with a full toss and England were 88 for 5.Jones had another big job to do to rescue her side and she would again need Dean’s help after calling Knight through for a single and seeing her captain run out on 31 as Kerr fired the ball in from square leg to wicketkeeper Izzy Gaze to make it 95 for 6.New Zealand looked in danger of letting England off the hook, just as they did in the first two fixtures of this series, when Gaze missed a stumping opportunity as Jones, on 18, advanced out of her crease and swung herself around attempting to loft a Jonas delivery over the leg side. At that point, England were 111 for 6 and when Dean overturned an lbw decision off Bates, the ball shown to be missing the top of leg stump, she and Jones were free to press on with the union their side so desperately needed.Jones brought up her fifty with a crisp single off Kerr but she fell moments later chipping Bates straight to Eden Carson at backward point, ending her stand with Dean, who departed a short time later when she picked out Brooke Halliday at cover off Rowe. Rowe claimed her third with a short ball which Cross edged behind down the leg side.
