Jamie Smith backed for England after Surrey go clear at top of Division One

Champions require just 39 minutes on the fourth morning to see off Warwickshire

Matt Roller13-May-2024Jamie Smith has the necessary “grounding” to become a “high-quality international” according to his Surrey coach Gareth Batty, who encouraged Smith to be “a dreamer” as he enters the conversation to become England’s Test wicketkeeper this summer.Jonny Bairstow and Ben Foakes struggled with the bat during England’s 4-1 loss in India earlier this year – neither scored a half-century in the series, both averaged in the low-20s – with Rob Key and Brendon McCullum making clear since that the position is up for grabs ahead of July’s Test series against West Indies.Smith, 23, has been involved in England’s pathway since Under-19 level and made his international debut in last September’s ODI series against Ireland. He started the County Championship season with half-centuries against Somerset and Kent but was Surrey’s match-winner against Warwickshire, hitting 155 off 179 balls to set the game up for their bowlers.”He’s coming on very nicely,” Batty said. “I thought last year was his big coming-of-age season, turning potential into output. There were some wonderful knocks for us, and I suppose now with international stuff coming along soon, how well he’s played in this game will be on everybody’s lips. The good thing with Jamie is that it’s not just this innings, it’s been over a period of time now. He has that foundation or platform behind him.”He’s the modern-day player. To be a high-quality international, you have to have the old-school grounding. He has that, and he’s prepared to do the hard work. He has a solid defence but we also see his expansive nature. We also see what he can do in white-ball cricket, and what he did here against a tiring attack. It’s all down to the individual now.”Surrey have backed Smith to bat at No. 4 this season, despite the arrival of Dan Lawrence – England’s spare batter on their India tour – from Essex, who has found himself down at No. 6. Foakes has been their first-choice wicketkeeper, but Smith deputised in last week’s victory over Hampshire and kept tidily, despite only being involved in one dismissal.Batty declined to comment on Smith’s Test aspirations, unsurprisingly given Foakes’ own hopes to remain involved in the England set-up. But he encouraged him to be ambitious, saying: “Everybody’s a bit of a dreamer, aren’t they? I don’t think you should play sport if you’re not going to dream.”There’s a stable base behind the wonderful stuff that we see out there, which hopefully prepares you for the unexpected. People are saying very nice things… we’re trying to produce a level group, and Jamie is just one of that group. It’s nice that people are saying nice things – we want that, of course – but he has earned the right.”Surrey took 39 minutes to wrap up their nine-wicket win on the final day, chasing down their target of 89 without breaking sweat. Rory Burns fell chipping Jacob Bethell to mid-on, but Dom Sibley guided them home with a calm, unbeaten 46. Ollie Pope struck the winning runs, working Rob Yates’ offspin into the leg side and coming back for three.”We fought hard throughout the game to get the win and it was a very good team performance,” Batty said. “Our bowling was actually a bit clunky at the start of the match, after a bye week last week, but we got better and better and really turned the screw later in the game and showed just what a wonderful bowling unit we have.”Warwickshire were without several first-choice bowlers in this match – Chris Rushworth (calf) and Liam Norwell (back) are injured, Hasan Ali was unexpectedly called up to Pakistan’s T20I squad and Chris Woakes has been at the IPL – and lost Craig Miles to an ankle injury while he was celebrating his fifth wicket on the second day.”We’ve done a lot right, but we haven’t been good enough,” their coach Mark Robinson said. “It’s aspirational for us as a big club like Warwickshire to get up level with them [Surrey] – at the moment, they’re Man City and we’re not. You need a few things to go your way to give yourselves the best chance… we’ve got four frontline bowlers who are unavailable, so that doesn’t help.”

Tom Bailey dents Warwickshire before Alex Davies battles back

Three wickets from Lancashire’s Tom Bailey put the hosts in charge against Warwickshire after a truncated day at Emirates Old Trafford ended with the visitors 89 for three from 39 overs on day one of this Vitality County Championship Division One clash.Bailey, who has struggled for consistency so far this campaign, showed what the Red Rose had been missing, as he dismissed Rob Yates, Will Rhodes and Ed Barnard either side of tea to finish the day with three for 25 after the game had finally got underway at 2.10pm following overnight rain.Full of confidence following a fine performance in beating Durham at Blackpool, a win which has left them within striking distance of mid-table, Lancashire will be looking to move off the bottom with a similar result against the Bears, who are winless in six matches, their second defeat – added to four draws – coming on Monday against Essex at Chelmsford.Once the extensive mopping-up operation had finished, Warwickshire, having won the toss, began batting under typical overcast Manchester skies with Yates opening the batting with former Lancashire wicket keeper batter, Alex Davies. The opening pair had put on 38 when Yates badly misjudged a Bailey delivery which jagged back and removed his off bail in the 11th over as the left-hander departed for 19.Skipper Davies, meanwhile, was going along nicely against his ex-teammates, with some trademark cover drives and busy running, a painful reminder to the home crowd of his talents. But it was Bailey, who had the bit between his teeth and with a worn pitch, gloomy skies and Nathan Lyon at the other end in support, he produced a beauty to find Rhodes’ edge with the batter on 14 when keeper Matty Hurst took the catch.74 for two quickly became 82 for three when Barnard edged another excellent Bailey delivery to Hurst to depart for two.The score had progressed to 89 for three with Davies unbeaten on 47 and Dan Mousley one not out when the players left the field at 5.09pm due to a combination of drizzle and bad light.

Americans Abroad – Bundesliga: Gold Cup breakout star Malik Tillman takes center stage at Bayer Leverkusen, but uncertainty for USMNT players at Borussia Dortmund

GOAL breaks down expectations for U.S. Internationals ahead of the upcoming European season, with a look at Germany's top flight

Americans and the Bundesliga – there's so much history there. When many of Europe's top leagues were afraid to take chances on American soccer's top stars, Germany never shied away. It's why so many careers  started in Germany's top flight and why so many U.S. men's national team stars will have fond memories of big Bundesliga matches.

Things have changed, of course, but some stayed the same. Heading into the new season, there are plenty of Americans scattered throughout the Bundesliga and, while there may be fewer by the time the transfer window closes, Germany's top flight remains one of the best proving grounds for the USMNT's best players.

From World Cup veterans to young stars itching for a breakout, there's no shortage of storylines to watch this season. There's a focus on who has arrived and who may still leave, but this season should be another dynamic one on the field, given the sheer variety of American players all over the league.

Ahead the European season, GOAL takes a closer look at the expectations for Americans Abroad. Next up: the Bundesliga.

Getty ImagesMalik Tillman, Bayer Leverkusen

After making his big summer move from PSV, Malik Tillman will be feeling the weight of expectations as he's tasked with helping replace a superstar.

Tillman alone can't replicate what Florian Wirtz provided. Few can, which is why Liverpool broke the bank to sign him. Tillman, though, is one hell of an attacking midfielder, one that seemingly gets better every year – and that's why Bayer Leverkusen used a chunk of that Wirtz to bring the midfielder over to Germany.

Now, Tillman will join a legitimate Bundesliga contender, one that knocked Bayern off their perch just two seasons ago. Much has changed since, both on the field and on the sidelines with Xabi Alonso's departure this summer, but make no mistake: Leverkusen is up near the top of this league.

It'll now be up to Tillman to show he is, too. He stepped up massively with the USMNT at this summer's at the Gold Cup, which should give him a confidence boost heading into the season, despite some fitness issues. Tillman is now on a bigger stage than he was before, one that could allow the 23-year-old midfielder – coming off a breakout Gold Cup performance – to blossom into a legitimate World Cup starter.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportJoe Scally, Borussia Monchengladbach

Scally was part of that group of regulars left off the USMNT squad this summer, and that'll likely light a fire under him. Not that he really needs it in the Bundesliga, to be fair, as he's been a steady defender in Germany's top flight for several years now.

Just 22, Scally already has 120 Bundesliga appearances for Gladbach. He's proven time and time again that he's a player who can play at this level. More specifically, he's proven he can defend at this level, which is his No. 1 task at Gladbach. As a mid-table team, Gladbach doesn't need anything particularly flashy, they just need stability.

Scally, by and large, provided that for the USMNT, but the U.S. also needs something a bit more. It's why the return of Sergino Dest is so anticipated. Stylistically, Scally and Dest are polar opposites, which is what makes that fullback situation so interesting. To remain in that battle, Scally likely has to just continue what he's always done but, if he can add a bit more on the attacking end this season, that would go a long way.

GettyGio Reyna, Cole Campbell and Mathis Albert, Borussia Dortmund

Get your bets in, everyone. Which of these three is most likely to actually play for Dortmund this season?

It may not be Reyna, who has been due for an exit for a long time. He played just 12 minutes at the Club World Cup this summer after playing just 341 league minutes last season.

His progress has been stunted by a series of injuries and a lack of minutes, which is why he's been so widely linked with a Dortmund exit all summer long. When that exit comes is anyone's guess but, after seeing his No. 7 given to Jobe Bellingham, the writing is on the wall: Reyna's time with the club is over.

Campbell's may be too, as he is also linked with an exit. Stuttgart are reportedly ready to give him the first-team opportunity he isn't expected to get with his current club this season, but Dortmund still have high hopes for him down the line. It's a tricky scenario, one that could end with Campbell leaving the club for playing time, either on loan or permanently.

And then there's Albert, the 16-year-old rising star who was the youngest player at this summer's Club World Cup. He recently signed a new deal and is expected to spend this season with Dortmund's second team, having previously done well for the club's youth sides.

Can he earn a debut by season's end? It would be a huge rise, but not one that's impossible for the teenage winger.

Getty Images SportKevin Paredes, Wolfsburg

It was a unfortunate, but injuries essentially wiped out Paredes' last season. Riding high off an Olympic run, he missed eight months, only returning for two appearances towards the tail end of Wolfsburg's season. It could have been a breakout year for the now-22-year-old winger. Instead, it was spent rehabbing in pursuit of a return to the field.

So what can he make of this season, then? Now fit, can Paredes now make his late push towards a World Cup spot?

It's certainly possible. Able to play anywhere on the left-hand side or even centrally in a pinch, Paredes is someone who can add plenty to a USMNT pool lacking difference-makers out wide. To be that player, he'll have to first show that he can do it with his club after missing his chance to do so last season.

Spin-heavy SL confident of success at T20 World Cup

SLC also believes they have enough power-hitters in the team “capable of meeting any challenge”

Madushka Balasuriya13-May-2024

Dhananjaya de Silva has not been a mainstay of Sri Lanka’s T20 side, but has been backed to come good at the World Cup•AFP/Getty Images

While the ongoing IPL may be a certifiable run-fest, the current school of thought surrounding the upcoming T20 World Cup is that conditions in the USA and Caribbean might be a little less batter-friendly. At least, that’s the working assumption Sri Lanka’s selectors were going on when they named their 15-man squad for the tournament.”If you look at the conditions in America and the West Indies, most of it is pointing towards the wickets there being quite slow,” chief selector Upul Tharanga said at a media briefing on Monday.”The Major League tournament was played in Dallas with drop-in pitches. If you look at those, even though they’re being brought down from Australia they are still quite uneven and a little slow. This could of course change, so it’s a little hard to predict.”Related

Uncapped Dunith Wellalage in Sri Lanka's T20 World Cup squad

Sri Lanka Cricket awards central contracts to 41 male players

It’s this line of thinking that has seen them stock their squad with spin-bowling options. While Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana will lead the line, Dhananjaya de Silva, Kamindu Mendis, Charith Asalanka and Dunith Wellalage all offer all-round options, while Vijayakanth Viyaskanth is among the travelling reserves. Dhananjaya, Wellalage show versatility is key Among the main beneficiaries of Sri Lanka’s focus on spin have been Dhananjaya and Wellalage.A lack of power-hitting pedigree has seen the 32-year-old Dhananjaya struggle to become a mainstay of the T20 side, while his position in the batting line-up has also yo-yoed. Over the past four years, he’s batted in each of the top seven positions, though primarily in the middle order, and of Sri Lanka’s nine T20Is this year he’s only played in four of them. As for Wellalage, he is yet to debut for Sri Lanka in T20Is, though he has 21 ODIs and a solitary Test to his name. But despite this lack of game time, both have been included in Sri Lanka’s squad, and Tharanga explained that it was their versatility that cemented their inclusion.”There could be a chance that we play three spinners sometimes. Looking at that is why we picked Dunith, particularly his batting, because sometimes we could go with him ahead of a fast-bowling allrounder.”As for Dhananjaya, we value his bowling. And with regard to power-hitting, we think we can get that from elsewhere in the side. In terms of his all-round input, and taking into consideration the conditions, he was a better option.”Tharanga also revealed that the uncapped Viyaskanth, who had impressed in the LPL in recent seasons as well as the ILT20 earlier this year, had been picked as a travelling reserve ahead of the likes of Jeffrey Vandersay and Akila Dananjaya owing to him being more suited to the conditions.”Viyaskanth is taller and has a higher arm action, and because of that we thought he would suit the West Indian conditions better. Along with Viyaskanth, we looked at Akila Dananjaya and Jeffrey Vandersay, and compared to them Viyaskanth has bowled more in franchise cricket, and so we think he’s best suited to fill in in the case of any injury.”Matheesha Pathirana has been in sensational form for CSK, but Sri Lanka will have to wait on a final medical report before they can clear him for return•BCCI

Concerns over power-hitting?The build-up to the World Cup – in the shadow of the IPL – has brought with it a certain degree of uncertainty over what the scoring will be like at the tournament, with ground averages perhaps no longer a reliable indicator of scoring patterns considering the kind of uber aggressive batting seen in the IPL so far.In this vein, there were questions over the selection of Dhananjaya over more explosive options like Kusal Janith Perera and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (travelling reserve). The selectors, though, were confident that the team selected has the firepower needed to go deep in the tournament.”If you look at scores in the West Indies historically, as well as the US, average scores are around 160. But until we play on them we won’t know how such wickets behave. But I do believe that this a team capable of meeting any challenge.”Speaking further on Perera’s axing, Tharanga said it was down to his recent lack of form, while he added that Bhanuka had been kept as a reserve as there were enough power hitters in the side already.”From the 15 players we’ve selected I think we have the necessary power in the side in terms of batters. In the opening slots we have Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka, then we have Kamindu Mendis, Charith [Asalanka], there’s Wanindu and Dasun Shanaka. So we have faith that we can cover the power side of the game with those players.”Special request for LiyanageJanith Liyanage was not part of the initial 25-man shortlist the selectors had identified as potential candidates for their final squad, but such has been the strength of his performances in ODIs – he has scored three fifties and a century in six innings since debuting in March of this year – they had been urged to reconsider his role in shortest format. As such, Liyanage, despite having played the last of his three T20Is back in February 2022, has been named one for four travelling reserves.”He wasn’t selected in the initial 25-man list because we thought we could go forward with those selections. But in the games following that decision, Janith performed very well,” Tharanga explained.”This meant that some of the seniors and coaches in the side asked again if it was possible to take Janith for the tournament.”Sri Lanka wait on Pathirana injuryMatheesha Pathirana had impressed in his second IPL campaign, picking up 13 wickets for Chennai Super Kings in six games before being sidelined with a hamstring strain. According to Tharanga, they are hopeful of the slinger being fit for the start of the tournament but will have to wait on the final medical report before identifying a clear timeline for his return. He is one of five seamers Sri Lanka will be taking to the US, alongside fellow slinger Nuwan Thushara, Dilshan Madushanka, Dushmantha Chameera and travelling reserve Asitha Fernando. In those, Tharanga believes there is enough to trouble opposition batters in all phases of play.”We have players to bowl at the death, but it’s in the powerplay that we need to focus on picking up wickets. So for that we have Madushanka and then as travelling reserve we have Asitha.”If we take our side, Thushara, Pathirana they can bowl in the death overs. But we needed someone that could come in if we needed a wicket-taking option with the new ball, which is why we went with Asitha [as a reserve over Binura Fernando].”

Agora vamos pensar no terceiro passo.
