'The whole world could see' – Ola Aina steers blame on Premier League officials for Nottingham Forest team-mate Taiwo Awoniyi's horror injury that required emergency surgery

Awoniyi was awoken from an induced coma on Wednesday after undergoing surgery to repair a serious abdominal injury that stemmed from the 27-year-old colliding with a post in Forest's 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Sunday. Antony Elanga was offside in the build-up to the incident but the assistant referee did not raise their flag until the play was completed. But team-mate Aina suggested this protocol, which was introduced in 2020, should be binned as "the whole world could see" Elanga was offside.

    WHAT (INSERT NAME) SAID

He told The Daily Mail: "Anthony was miles offside. The whole world could see and so could I from where I was. You think 'offside' straight away. Surely you could just lift the flag up? None of this would have happened to 'T' if the flag had just gone up, would it?"

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Injuries like this may lead to a rethink of this protocol but the way this incident was handled by Forest has also drawn scrutiny. Club owner Evangelos Marinakis came onto the pitch at City Ground after the game, allegedly to express his frustration to manager Nuno Espirito Santo – who had used all his blocks of substitutes and therefore could not replace Awoniyi – how this was handled. This has been a dark few days for Forest.

New Zealand offspinner Will Somerville announces retirement

He played six Tests and claimed seven wickets on debut against Pakistan

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Mar-2023Former New Zealand offspinner Will Somerville will retire from the professional game at the end of the domestic season.Somerville played six Tests between 2018 and 2021, taking 15 wickets, seven of which came on debut in Abu Dhabi where he helped New Zealand to a 123-run victory over Pakistan.”I’ve achieved more than what I thought I could achieve after becoming a professional cricketer at 30-years old,” he said. “I’ve played nine seasons professionally and loved every minute of it.”Somerville began his first-class career with Otago in 2004-05 before moving to Australia where, after a gap of six years, he represented New South Wales between 2014-15 and 2017-18. He also played in the BBL for Sydney Sixers. On returning home he joined Auckland in 2018-19 and earned an international call-up for the series against Pakistan in the UAE. His last Test came against India in Mumbai in late 2021.Somerville will play his last first-class game against Central Stags in Nelson early next month. Ahead of the ongoing around of Plunket Shield matches he had 156 first-class wickets at 29.57.”Will is an all-round wonderful human being and is certainly the ‘Dad’ of the changing room,” Auckland coach Doug Watson said. “His calmness and humility as well as his skilful bowling will be greatly missed by the boys.”

Qalandars win from 50 for 7 thanks to Raza fifty and Rauf three-for

Defending champions Lahore Qalandars staged a magnificent recovery from 50 for 7 to win by 17 runs at Gaddafi Stadium and keep Quetta Gladiators rooted to the bottom of the PSL table. Sikandar Raza was their hero with the bat, smashing an unbeaten 71 from 34 balls, before the Qalandars attack recovered from a poor start to comprehensively throttle the chase, led by Haris Rauf’s 3 for 22. By the end, they laid claim to the record of joint-lowest total (148) successfully defended in a PSL match in Pakistan.Qalandars were in deep trouble after being inserted, but were given something to bowl at by Raza’s first PSL half-century. The Zimbabwe allrounder struck eight fours and three sixes in a stunning counterattack, putting on an eighth-wicket stand worth 69 off 6.3 overs with Rashid Khan and helping to set Gladiators a target of 149 despite being bowled out early.Gladiators were seemingly cruising as they reached 53 for 1, with Yasir Khan falling to Rauf from the last ball of the powerplay. Will Smeed had struck six crisp fours in 32 off 25 balls to help get his side ahead of the asking rate, but after he fell lbw to Rashid in the seventh over, Gladiators began a slow-motion collapse that saw them add 11 runs in five overs while losing three wickets. It got worse for Gladiators when Martin Guptill launched David Wiese down the throat of deep midwicket, with the required rate crossing 10 per over. Odean Smith and Mohammad Nawaz were dismissed by Rauf as the home side took control, conceding just five boundaries in the second half of the innings and ensuring the victory was all but secure with an over to spare. For the first quarter of the match, it seemed nailed on that the Lahore fans would go home disappointed. Qalandars lost a wicket in the opening over of their innings, Umaid Asif marking his Gladiators debut with a direct hit that caught Fakhar Zaman short; Umaid’s night then got better when he struck with his third ball, taking a simple return catch after Mirza Baig top-edged a pull. Naveen-ul-Haq struck twice in as many overs as Qalandars limped to 29 for 4 at the end of the powerplay.Qalandars’ attempts to disrupt the flow involved sending the captain, Shaheen Shah Afridi, out at No. 6 – he had never previously batted higher than No. 8 in a T20. It was a partial (and relative) success, as he outscored the rest of the top six with 16 off 16, before running himself out looking for a non-existent single in the ninth over. With Abdullah Shafique and Wiese falling to Nawaz either side of Shaheen’s dismissal, Qalandars were seven down at halfway. But Raza hit his sixth ball, from Nawaz, for six, added another in the next over from Umaid, hit Naveen for three fours in five balls and took a brace of boundaries off Naseem Shah as the recovery partnership swelled past 50. Even with Raza’s efforts, Qalandars were unable to bat their full 20 overs – but it turned out the league leaders had more than enough for a fifth win in six.

Agarkar frontrunner to be the new India men's chairman of selectors

Former bowler has played 26 Tests and 191 ODIs and has experience of being on a selection panel in domestic cricket

Sidharth Monga30-Jun-2023Former India bowler Ajit Agarkar is the frontrunner to be the next India men’s chairman of selectors after applying to the vacant spot in the selection committee. The BCCI advertised on June 22 for the vacancy that has not been filled since February when the last chairman of selectors, Chetan Sharma, resigned following a news channel sting operation on him. Agarkar applied on June 29 evening, a day before the deadline. If selected, the 45-year-old Agarkar, who played 26 Tests and 191 ODIs for India, will become the most experienced member of the panel, and thus also the chairman of selectors.Chetan represented North Zone in the panel, so Agarkar’s appointment will result in the panel having two selectors from West Zone, Salil Ankola being the other one. In the BCCI constitution, drafted as per the RM Lodha-committee recommendations, there is no mention of selectors being appointed on a zonal basis; just that the five selectors should have been retired for at least five years and played a certain number of matches. While the BCCI has followed an unwritten rule of picking a selector from each of the five zones traditionally, the advertisement for the role never specified it was looking for a candidate from a specific zone.Shiv Sunder Das, S Sharath and Subroto Banerjee are the other three selectors. With the most international experience among them, Das serves as the chairman as of now.Related

Selecting the selectors: a key job in Indian cricket, but who'd want to take it up?

For a team in transition, as India is, a settled selection panel with vision, clarity and continuity is of utmost importance. But the selection committee has been anything but settled since last year when the BCCI moved away from the convention of giving a chairman two terms and asked for new applications for Chetan’s role following the semi-final loss in the T20 World Cup. However, the board failed to attract a better option, and re-elected Chetan the chairman of selectors only for the sting operation leading to his resignation, which has never been acknowledged by the BCCI.One big challenge for India is that the chairman of selectors is paid just over INR 1 crore per year. Any former cricketer easily makes more with work in the media, which comes without the scrutiny a national selector faces, and also coaching gigs in T20 leagues.Agarkar himself was part of the Delhi Capitals’ coaching staff in the IPL apart from doing media work. Capitals’ Twitter handle on June 29 announced Agarkar, and Shane Watson too, had parted ways with them. Agarkar has also served as a chairman of selectors for Mumbai in domestic cricket from 2017 to 2019, when the entire panel abruptly stepped down.Agarkar brings the heft and the experience that the BCCI is looking for in a perspective chairman of selectors, but it remains to be seen if the board will review the compensation for the selectors.

'Harden the f*** up' – Stern words that led to Starc's durability

Starc revealed words from a former Australia coach spurred him to push through pain barrier as he closes in on Dennis Lillee’s tally

Alex Malcolm05-Mar-20241:39

Clarke: Marnus needs to believe in himself

Mitchell Starc has the strong words of former Australia coach Tim Nielsen still ringing in his ears as he stands on the brink of a remarkable achievement. If he takes two wickets at Hagley Oval this week against New Zealand in the second Test he will surpass Dennis Lillee on Australia’s all-time leading Test wicket-takers list and move to fourth behind Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Nathan Lyon.Related

Green set to focus on red-ball preparation ahead of India Tests

Taylor on Wagner: 'I think it's a forced retirement'

As impressive as that is, Starc is arguably prouder of the fact he is set to play his seventh straight Test of a southern hemisphere summer. It is something he has not done in his 14-year international career. The closest he has come was 2017-18, where he missed one Test out of eight when Australia played five against England at home and three against South Africa away in the span of four months.A once fragile Starc has become Australia’s iron man, pushing through pain to play game after game for his country. He distinctly remembers a conversation on one of his early tours with Australia in 2010, that led him to realise that pushing through pain was part of the job.”I was still learning what all those pains were and obviously the reports get around from physios to coaches and I sort of got told to harden the f*** up a little bit,” Starc said. “Timmy Nielsen probably made me aware that early doors. Obviously, there’s plenty of times you need to be honest with the medical staff but other times you got to know when to push through things.”The last 12 months has been one of those times. Starc was Australia’s leading wicket-taker in the away Ashes last year despite only playing four Tests. He was supposed to go on the limited-overs tour of South Africa before the ODI World Cup but was withdrawn due to lingering groin soreness. Starc has never revealed the exact details of the issue nor has he outlined the pain he was in. He remains tightlipped on both.Mitchell Starc has often pushed through the pain barrier•Getty ImagesBut there were grave concerns for him during the World Cup, where he hardly trained and had to make slight changes to his run-up to mitigate against long-term injury. That he got through the tournament without issue was impressive. That he has been able to back up and play seven Tests in a row since is even more so.”I think a lot of work goes into that a lot of work that people don’t see or whether it be the rehab or the handling of niggles or there’s certainly sore mornings for a lot of people,” Starc said. “But I think that comes down to experiencing and knowing how to deal with certain things and finding ways through them to still make an impact with a team or perform and carry out your role.”Surpassing Lillee will be a monumental achievement. He is the only bowler in Australia’s top eight wicket-takers with a strike-rate under 50. Of the 27 men who have taken more than 350 Test wickets, only Dale Steyn, Waqar Younis and Malcolm Marshall have a better strike-rate than Starc.”It’s cool. It’s humbling,” Starc said. “It means I’m old. I’ve played a little bit of cricket.”Starc also has another landmark in sight. Tim Southee will become the latest pace bowler to bring up 100 Tests in Christchurch this week and Starc is 12 away. If his body and form hold up, he could join the club in 2025.”To play 100 Test matches as a fast bowler is a huge achievement for [Southee],” Starc said. “If I can get that far, that’d be nice as a bowler and again that’s probably showing a bit of age and experience but a bit of longevity as well and then the work to become resilient and to push through a few things. So if I can get that far it’d be a nice touch but at this stage, it’s one week at a time.”

Vishwa, Kumara and Rajitha help Sri Lanka inch ahead on another bowlers' day

A day belonging to the bowlers ended with Sri Lanka 211 runs ahead, after their seamers ran through Bangladesh’s line-up to secure a healthy first-innings lead of 92 in Sylhet before the batters stretched it further. Dhananjaya de Silva (23*), one of two first-innings centurions, was at the crease alongside nightwatcher Vishwa Fernando, after Bangladesh again troubled Sri Lanka’s top order on a wicket that continued to prove further more challenging for batters.Nahid Rana continued his excellent debut, accounting for the wickets of Nishan Madushka and Kusal Mendis during a fiery opening spell. There was also finally some joy for the spinners, with Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz getting rid of Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal, respectively. But it was Shoriful Islam who grabbed the prized wicket of Dimuth Karunaratne. The former captain had been in the middle of one his patented scratchy but durable innings, notching his 36th Test fifty, when he top-edged a sharp bouncer straight to fine leg. That reduced Sri Lanka to 113 for 5, and produced a nervy final few minutes of play as Vishwa and Dhananjaya played out till the close. But despite the best efforts of the Bangladesh bowling contingent, it was Sri Lanka’s seamers who ensured their side would be ahead on the day after a disciplined and probing effort had been duly rewarded with the hosts being dismissed for 188 less than an hour before tea.Having begun the day with Bangladesh three down, Sri Lanka’s seamers hogged the ball across the morning session and for most of the afternoon as well – spinner Prabath Jayasuriya got just a solitary over – as they finished by grabbing all ten wickets, the first time the quicks did that in a Test innings in Bangladesh since 2008.In a display of endurance as much as patience, each of Lahiru Kumara, Kasun Rajitha and Vishwa Fernando produced tireless spells of disciplined and high-quality fast bowling.Shoriful Islam got Dimuth Karunaratne for 52 late in the day•AFP/Getty Images

Kumara did the damage early in the day, sending three frontline batters packing before lunch. The first to go was Mahmudul Hasan Joy, who hadn’t looked comfortable negotiating the seaming ball outside off and eventually pushed too hard at one that had a little extra bounce.Shahadat Hossain too fell prey to that nagging length outside off, edging into the slip cordon, but Kumara saved his best for Litton Das. Having bowled a couple prior that held its line outside off, he got one to jag back in and burst through bat and pad to crash into the stumps.Litton had been looking good up until that point, but his wicket just an over before lunch proved to be crucial, as it ended an innings-best 41-run stand and brought about the last recognised batter – Mehidy – to the crease. That said, Taijul, who had come in the previous evening as a nightwatcher, was still in and looking increasingly more confident. A couple of lovely drives earlier in the day, mixed in with surprisingly adept defensive resilience, had seen the spinner upstage his more illustrious batting counterparts. This was perhaps borne out of him being more aware of his limitations, and thus less likely to take the bait being offered by the Sri Lanka seamers outside off. But just as Bangladesh would have been hoping he would carry on, he flashed at a wide, full one from Rajitha and found the edge.Mehidy then attempted to shield Shoriful from the strike, but that strategy necessitated a more proactive approach, and so he wound up getting a leading edge looking to aggressively work a straight one through midwicket.Sri Lanka might have been hoping to wrap up proceedings swiftly from then on, but both Shoriful and Khaled Ahmed decided to shed any pretence of dragging the innings further and looked to slog at any available opportunity. A couple of lusty blows off Jayasuriya were the highlight, while some fortunate edges afforded runs even off the seamers. In the end, Shoriful top-edged one too many, and Khaled fell shortly after, getting a thick edge on a swipe across the line. The pair’s 40-run stand came off just 35 deliveries, and given the difficulty with which runs subsequently got scored, might prove pretty valuable in the grand scheme of the game.
