Group B scenarios: England in must-win territory; SA in contention for top spot

Australia will qualify for the semis with five points if they beat Afghanistan on Friday

South Africa
If South Africa beat England, they will qualify for the semi-finals, and could take top spot even if Australia beat Afghanistan, as long as their net run-rate tops Australia’s. However, a defeat to England could knock them out if England and Australia both beat Afghanistan. For South Africa to stay in contention with three points, Afghanistan will have to win at least one match. If they beat England and lose to Australia, then Australia and South Africa will qualify; if Afghanistan beat Australia and lose to England, then South Africa and Australia will be fighting for second place; if Afghanistan win both matches, then Afghanistan will top the group, and second place will again come down to the NRR between Australia and South Africa.Related

England, Afghanistan put politics aside with tournament on the line

Australia
Australia will be through with five points if they beat Afghanistan on Friday. If they lose, their qualification chances will depend on the two remaining England games. If England win both games and Australia lose theirs, then either Australia or South Africa will finish second in the group, depending on NRR.Thanks to their 107-run win against Afghanistan, South Africa are currently sitting pretty on the NRR front. Even if Australia lose to Afghanistan by just one run chasing 301, South Africa will have to lose to England by at least 87 runs chasing the same target for Australia to sneak ahead on NRR.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

England
England need to win both their remaining games to qualify; a defeat against either Afghanistan or South Africa will knock them out. Given that the weather forecast looks fine for both their matches – though Lahore is expected to be overcast for their Afghanistan contest – sharing points in either of them looks highly unlikely.Afghanistan
Like England, Afghanistan need two wins to be sure of qualification. If they beat England and their match against Australia is washed out – there is forecast for some rain in Lahore on Friday – then they will finish on three points. In that case, they can qualify only if England beat South Africa, and if Afghanistan trump South Africa on NRR.

Newcastle readying deadline-busting bid for "world-class" Real Madrid star

Newcastle United have made headlines in the window over the past couple of days and could be about to repeat that feat if they seal a deal to land their latest target, according to a report.

Newcastle United strike deal to sign Nick Woltemade

With speculation that Alexander Isak could be set for a move to Liverpool rife, Newcastle have sealed a deal to sign Stuttgart forward Nick Woltemade as Eddie Howe adopts a proactive attitude when it comes to replacing the Sweden international.

Despite being pressed on the matter, the former Bournemouth manager didn’t give much away regarding when Magpies fans may be able to see the towering German striker in action after he was not registered in time to play against Leeds.

Continuing their striker pursuit, Newcastle are still in the running to land Brentford star Yoane Wissa before the deadline, albeit the Bees are intent on claiming £50 million for his services.

In one of the surprising developments of the last few days, Kobbie Mainoo is being courted by the Magpies and may be set for a late move deal elsewhere after falling out of favour under Ruben Amorim.

Newcastle submit bid for £35m Champions League finalist after Woltemade

The PIF aren’t messing around late in the window.

Talks are open regarding a swoop for the England international, though it remains to be seen if Howe and company will be allowed to proceed, given they are dealing with a direct Premier League rival.

Plates are spinning on Tyneside and more signings are expected to arrive before the close of play after Woltemade, and PIF could now be set to raid a global superpower for one of their most exciting stars.

Newcastle line up ambitious bid for Eduardo Camavinga

According to reports in Spain, Newcastle are prepared to offer an overall package of £42.3 million to land Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga to add a layer of stardust to their engine room.

However, Xabi Alonso wouldn’t be willing to consider parting ways with the France international unless Los Blancos receive a fee exceeding £60 million, which would likely be a starting point in negotiations.

Labelled “world-class” by Thom Harris, Camavinga registered two goals and two assists in 35 appearances across all competitions last term, though he has yet to feature this time around due to an injury layoff.

Despite interest from Newcastle, the Cabinda-born man is viewed as a key member of Alonso’s side and is viewed as someone who can share midfield duties with Aurelien Tchouameni, potentially harming the Magpies’ chances of landing his signature.

Nevertheless, PIF continue to show ambition in the market and supporters will be watching with eagle eyes to see if their side can force through another statement move.

Kumble: Time for India to start building for 2027 ODI World Cup

Anil Kumble, the former India captain and legspinner, believes the team must start setting transition plans in motion after the ongoing Champions Trophy, and build a new, younger team capable of challenging for the 2027 ODI World Cup.Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s Matchday show ahead of India’s opening game against Bangladesh, Kumble said that head coach Gautam Gambhir will have some “tough calls” to make, irrespective of how the current team fares in the Champions Trophy.”You could say this is a very important tournament for a coach who has to make those tough calls in terms of transitioning from the legacy players to the others,” Kumble said. “But that’s the job of the coach, to make those hard decisions.”This tournament could determine where those seniors would go, and where India would look at making those changes. Win or lose, you need these tough calls to be made at the earliest. You need to start looking ahead in white-ball cricket, especially at the 2027 World Cup.”While Gambhir has a stellar record in T20Is as head coach, with 16 wins and just two losses, his credentials in ODIs and Tests have been less impressive. India lost a bilateral ODI series to Sri Lanka for the first time in 27 years, while in Tests, they were beaten 3-0 at home by New Zealand before losing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 3-1 in Australia.Kumble stressed on the need for Gambhir to introduce young blood in the squad and ensure the new group of players have “at least 20-25 matches together” before the next ODI World Cup.”In any World Cup, you’re looking at building a squad that has played at least 20 or 25 matches together. That’s when you understand the nuances of match situations, and who to rely on. Ideally, at the end of this tournament, you must start looking ahead to the next World Cup. Do the seniors make it there? Or do we give the opportunity to youngsters to take the team forward in the shorter formats and build a strong unit? These are questions Gambhir needs to address.”He (Gambhir) has a fresh, young team and plenty of players to choose and build from, so he needs to organically start preparing for the 2027 World Cup. In T20Is, he’s done well. Suryakumar Yadav has been a great captain. The next World Cup is still two years from now, and the new set of players will need a consistent run of games playing with each other, to understand many things like the batting order, match situation, and tactics.”

Man City star now open to moving away in January just months after signing

Manchester City are enjoying their return after the international break, but could be set to allow a Pep Guardiola signing to leave the club despite the player in question only joining mere months ago.

Manchester City summer signings make instant impact

The transfer window has been and gone, leaving Manchester City hopeful they can start to build momentum as they look to reclaim the Premier League title from Liverpool.

Last weekend’s resounding victory over Manchester United will have restored belief after back-to-back top-flight defeats, and the introduction of Gianluigi Donnarumma to the fold has certainly provided an elevated level of assurance within the Citizens’ backline.

Impressing with his gigantic figure between the sticks, Peter Schmeichel admitted to Premier League Productions that he even tried to convince the Manchester City stopper to move to Old Trafford before his transfer to the blue side of the city materialised.

He said, detailing a previous encounter when he was at Paris Saint-Germain: “I asked my first question and he started to answer in Italian, and I had no clue! Over the last season I kept saying to him, ‘We want you at Man United.

“I did. So I went to him, ‘What are you doing here? You should be in the other goal (for United),’ but he said, ‘I’m very, very happy here.’ He showed it, he gave it to the team today, didn’t he.”

Little did Schmeichel know that Donnarumma would immediately be installed as Guardiola’s number one, but there are always ramifications that come with new signings being made.

Now, the Citizens could be willing to offload one of their summer additions in a surprise move that will shock many supporters.

James Trafford could make Man City loan exit

According to TBR, Man City could allow James Trafford to leave on loan in January to help keep his hopes of making Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad alive, given Donnarumma has become Guardiola’s preferred stopper.

The £50,000 per week earner has fallen down the pecking order, something that is further complicated by Stefan Ortega remaining at the club, and he could be permitted a temporary exit after joining for £27 million from Burnley.

Trafford, who himself is open to a loan move away, has started three of Manchester City’s opening four Premier League matches, keeping a clean sheet against Wolverhampton Wanderers, followed by less convincing performances against Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion.

Nevertheless, he is a fine talent who also courted attention from Newcastle United during the summer before settling on a move back to the club where it all started.

Now, he needs minutes to keep his hopes of being under contention with England alive, and he is unlikely to be short of suitors once the January window opens.

"Eye-catching" £20m ex-Tottenham player now eyeing Spurs return in January

Tottenham Hotspur are now plotting a surprise move for an “eye-catching” former player, who would be open to a January return to north London.

Frank stresses the importance of defensive solidity

During the Ange Postecoglou era, Tottenham received widespread criticism for their lack of defensive solidity, but Thomas Frank has made immediate improvements, with his side conceding just one goal in their opening three Premier League games.

Speaking after the impressive 3-0 victory at West Ham United, the Spurs boss said: “It’s hugely important that we are good defensively. Obviously, we want to score, we want to play forward, want to play offensive football, we’ve scored eight goals, clearly we want to score goals, but over so many, many games, that foundation, being able to get clean sheets is key.”

Left-back Djed Spence is one of the players to have made a solid start to the season, with the 25-year-old receiving his first England cap in the recent international break and becoming the first Muslim Three Lions star in history.

However, according to a report from Football Insider, Tottenham remain keen on bringing in another left-back, with Sunderland’s Dennis Cirkin being targeted for a “surprise” return to north London.

Cirkin is said to be open to re-joining his former club during the January transfer window, and bringing in defensive reinforcements is of key importance to Spurs, given that they still remain a little light on options at the back in case of injury.

There are also issues with Spurs’ European ‘locally trained’ quota, which is viewed as a key reason why Frank was forced to submit a 22-man Champions League squad for the league phase whilst leaving out the likes of Mathys Tel, Kota Takai and Yves Bissouma.

Transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke added: “He would provide a boost to their homegrown quota, and they have had a few issues with that homegrown quote for their Champions League squad this year.

“So the deal could make sense if they want to bring him in to boost that. He definitely would provide cover for left-back if Tottenham were to make a move for him.”

"Eye-catching" Cirkin could be solid option for Frank

A deal for the 23-year-old would not break the bank, with widespread reports suggesting Sunderland would accept a bid of £20m, and there are clear indications he could be a solid option for Frank, at least as a back-up option.

Since leaving Spurs back in 2021, the Dublin-born defender has gone on to prove himself at Sunderland, making 36 league appearances for the Black Cats en-route to promotion last season.

"Shocker" – £170k-p/w Tottenham star left furious despite win at West Ham

A Tottenham Hotspur player was left fuming, despite his side recording a comfortable victory at the London Stadium.

ByDominic Lund Sep 14, 2025

During that time, former Championship striker Sam Parkin also singled out the left-back for praise, saying: “I think he has been one of the most outstanding players in the division this season.

“When you watch him live, he is a very good athlete. I think he gets up and down; it is eye-catching the way he moves with the ball, but his decision-making on the ball and his ability on the ball have been top-class this season.”

Cirkin clearly has the talent to succeed at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but there are some doubts over whether the Sunderland defender would be a necessary signing, given that Frank already has Spence and Destiny Udogie to choose from at left-back.

Suryakumar Yadav will lead Mumbai Indians (MI) in their opening game of IPL 2025, with regular captain Hardik Pandya out serving the one-match ban he picked up in the team’s last IPL 2024 game.”We have been officially communicated that he [Hardik] has to miss [the first game],” Mahela Jayawardene, the MI head coach, said in a press meet in Mumbai on Wednesday, confirming that Suryakumar would be leading the side for the game.Hardik said he was not aware of the consequences of maintaining a slow over-rate in last season’s game.”That is out of my control. Last year what occurred is part of the sport. We bowled the last over one-and-a-half or two minutes late. At that point I didn’t know the consequences,” Hardik said. “It is unfortunate, but the rules say it. I will have to go with the process. Next season, if they continue or not continue [with this rule], I think that is on the higher authorities. They can definitely see what best can be done.Related

“Surya, obviously, leads India [in T20Is] as well. When I’m not there, he is the ideal choice in this format.”MI’s first game is against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Chennai on March 23. They will be without Hardik as well as Jasprit Bumrah, who is still recovering from the lower-back injury that has kept him out of action since January. Bumrah is expected to miss more than one match.Hardik was penalised for MI’s slow over-rate in their last league game of IPL 2024, against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Since that was his third offence of the season, Hardik was given a one-match suspension for his next IPL game, along with an INR 30 lakh fine.He will be available for MI’s second game, also away, in Ahmedabad against Gujarat Titans (GT) on March 29. MI’s first home match is two days later, when they host Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on March 31. They then play two matches in the first week of April: LSG in Lucknow on April 4 and at home against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 7.MI had finished last in IPL 2024 after winning only four out of 14 games.

Harry Brook confirmed as England's new white-ball captain

Harry Brook has been confirmed as England’s new white-ball captain, across both T20I and ODI formats, after Jos Buttler’s decision to stand down following his team’s early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy in March.Brook, 26, has been England’s vice-captain in white-ball cricket for the past year, and led the side in Buttler’s absence for five ODIs against Australia last September. His first outing as the official captain will come in three home T20Is and three ODIs against West Indies at the end of May.”It’s a real honour to be named England’s white-ball captain,” Brook said. “Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me.”Brook had been the outstanding candidate for the role after emerging as a key player across formats since his debut in 2022, including Test cricket, for which he is currently ranked as the No.2 batter behind his England team-mate Joe Root, having made a career-best 317 against Pakistan in Multan last year.Speculation had mounted about Brook’s impending appointment when, on the eve of this year’s IPL, he pulled out of his deal with Delhi Capitals for the second year running, citing the need for England to remain his “priority and focus” ahead of a busy 12 months across formats, including key Test series against India and Australia, and the next T20 World Cup in February 2026.”I want to thank my family and coaches who’ve supported me every step of the way,” Brook said. “Their belief in me has made all the difference and I wouldn’t be in this position without them.Related

“There’s so much talent in this country, and I’m looking forward to getting started, moving us forward, and working towards winning series, World Cups and major events. I’m excited to get going and give it everything I’ve got.”Though still relatively inexperienced as a leader, Brook impressed with his tactical nous in the 3-2 series loss to Australia in September, having also led the Under-19 team at the 2018 World Cup. He has also captained Northern Superchargers in the Men’s Hundred, when available.Though there were no realistic alternatives to Brook as T20I captain, there had been some thought as to whether Ben Stokes should take on the role in ODI cricket, given his existing relationship with Brendon McCullum, and the extent to which the 50-over and Test squads have overlapped in recent months.Speaking in March, Rob Key, England men’s managing director, acknowledged it would be “stupid” not to consider Stokes’ credentials. However, with Stokes still recuperating from hamstring surgery, and given that he had previously retired from the format in 2022 citing his workload, this option was not pursued.Key said: “I’m delighted that Harry Brook has accepted the role as England’s white-ball captain across both formats. He’s been part of our succession planning for some time, albeit this opportunity has come slightly earlier than expected.”Harry is not only an outstanding cricketer, but also has an excellent cricketing brain and a clear vision for both teams that will help drive us towards winning more series, World Cups and major global tournaments.”To date, Brook has played 26 ODIs for England, scoring 816 runs at 34.00, including a match-winning century as captain against Australia last summer. In T20Is, he has played 44 games, averaging 28.50 with a top score of 81 not out, and was part of the team that won the T20 World Cup in Australia in 2022.

"See you soon" – Newcastle star gutted after suffering Liverpool "setback"

Howe addresses Isak’s Newcastle future after Liverpool defeat

Much of the focus around Newcastle’s meeting with Liverpool on Monday evening centred around the future of Alexander Isak, with the forward once again absent from Eddie Howe’s side.

The Reds have been looking to sign the striker this summer and have even had a £110m bid turned down by those at St James’ Park, with Isak looking to force a move to Anfield.

On the pitch, Newcastle battled back from Anthony Gordon’s red card and were 2-0 down to Arne Slot’s side, but goals from Bruno Guimaraes and Will Osula looked to have won the Magpies a point before 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha came off the bench to snatch victory deep into stoppage time.

Asked about Isak after the defeat, Howe admitted he and his team need “clarity” regarding the striker’s future.

“I’ve not been party to talks on this for a long time now. I’ve been preparing the team and giving all my energy to the players that want to play for Newcastle. I think that is where my energy is best put at the moment. We want clarity, we want to move forward, we want the narrative to change because we’re in the start of the season now.

“We’re into the action and we’ve got to get results, and we’ve got to try to focus on what we can control. We’ve given two really, really good performances, we’ve ended up with one point. That’s tough for us to take, especially in this moment where you’re looking for positives to cling to. But we battle through and we now go on to Leeds.”
